macOS Kernel Panic, Black Screen, and Recovery Mode¶
When a Mac computer displays a dark screen with a multi-language panic notice (Kernel Panic), becomes stuck on a spinning globe icon, or fails to boot past the Apple logo, accessing built-in macOS Recovery tools helps repair system disks and restore functioning operating system files.
Step 1: Force Shut Down and Reset Hardware¶
- Press and hold the physical Power Button (or Touch ID button) for 10 seconds until the Mac powers down completely.
- Disconnect all external Thunderbolt docks, external hard drives, display adapters, and USB hubs except for your primary keyboard and mouse.
Step 2: Booting into macOS Recovery¶
For Apple Silicon Mac Computers (M1, M2, M3, M4 Chips)¶
- Shut down the Mac completely.
- Press and hold the Power Button continuously until you see Loading startup options.
- Select Options, then click Continue.
- Select an administrator user account and enter the password.
For Intel-Based Mac Computers¶
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press the Power Button, then immediately press and hold Command (⌘) + R until the Apple logo or spinning globe appears.
Step 3: Running Disk Utility First Aid¶
- From the macOS Recovery utilities window, select Disk Utility and click Continue.
- Click View > Show All Devices in the top menu bar.
- Select your main startup drive (typically Macintosh HD) and click the First Aid button.
- Click Run. First Aid will check for corrupt directory structures and repair APFS volume errors.
Step 4: Reinstalling macOS or Time Machine Restore¶
- If Disk Utility First Aid detects unrepairable corruption, select Reinstall macOS from the Recovery menu. Reinstalling macOS overwrites system files while preserving personal documents and user files.
- If system files are severely damaged, select Restore from Time Machine to revert the Mac to an earlier backup snapshot.
