How to exit a bad date gracefully and safely¶
Not every date goes well. Whether a date is awkward, boring, rude, or simply lacking romantic chemistry, you are never obligated to remain in a situation where you feel uncomfortable or un-interested. Exiting gracefully and safely protects your time and emotional well-being.
Do this now¶
- Remind yourself that you do not owe anyone your time or a second date. It is completely okay to end a date early.
- Pay for your own share of the bill or leave cash on the table so you can leave without delay.
- Order your own independent rideshare (Uber/Lyft), taxi, or public transit home. Do not accept a ride from your date.
- Use a pre-arranged check-in call or text message from a friend if you need a comfortable exit excuse.
- Be polite but clear. You do not need to give elaborate excuses or promise to meet again.
Polite and direct exit strategies¶
Ending a date early can feel uncomfortable, but clear communication is usually the best approach:
- The honest and polite exit: "Thank you for meeting me, but I don't feel a romantic connection, so I am going to call it an evening. Take care."
- The pre-framed time limit: Mention a firm end time at the start of the date ("I can only stay for an hour because I have an early work morning tomorrow").
- The friend check-in: Have a friend text or call you 30 minutes into the date. If the date is going poorly, use the call as a reason to wrap up ("My friend needs my help with something tonight").
- The venue code word (Angel Shot / Ask for Angela): Many bars and restaurants train staff to help people exit bad or unsafe dates discreetly. Asking the bartender for an "Angel Shot" or asking if "Angela" is working alerts staff to order you a taxi or escort you out safely.
Safety rules for first dates¶
Protecting your independence makes exiting quick and stress-free:
- Meet in public spaces: Always meet for first dates in well-lit, populated public venues (cafes, restaurants, public parks).
- Provide your own transportation: Drive your own car, walk, or take your own rideshare. Never let a first date pick you up at your home address.
- Keep your phone charged: Ensure your smartphone has full battery life and share your location with a close friend via location-sharing features.
- Never leave drinks unattended: Keep your glass or cup with you at all times to prevent drink spiking.
After the date¶
If the person texts or calls after you have ended the date:
- Send a brief, firm text: "Thanks for meeting, but I didn't feel a spark and don't want to pursue another date. Best of luck."
- Unmatch and block if necessary: If the person becomes hostile, persistent, or disrespectful after you decline a second date, block their phone number and unmatch them on dating platforms immediately.
