Emergency Guide is a free safety information site run by Keith Myers. This page explains what information the site collects when you use it, why, and the choices you have. The short version: you can read every page without giving us anything, and analytics only run if you agree to them.

Our promise

Emergency Guide itself never collects, stores or builds records of information that identifies you as a person:

  • There are no accounts, sign ups, forms, comments or newsletters, so the site never asks for your name, address, phone number or email.
  • We never try to work out who an individual visitor is, and we never combine analytics, advertising or server data with anything else to do so.
  • We look at analytics only as totals and trends, such as how many people read a guide or which languages are used, never as a record of one person.
  • We do not send Google a user ID, we do not turn on Google's features that link visits to signed in Google accounts, and we keep analytics data for the shortest period Google offers.
  • We do not sell, rent or trade information about visitors.

Some outside services the site uses, described below, handle identifiers such as cookie IDs and IP addresses. Privacy laws such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) treat those identifiers as personal data even when nobody knows whose they are. That is why those services run only if you agree, and why this policy explains them and your rights.

What we collect

Analytics, only with your consent. If you choose to allow analytics in the cookie banner, the site loads Google Analytics. It records things like which pages are viewed, how you arrived at the site, the words you type into the site search, your general location (country or city, worked out from your IP address), and the type of device and browser you use. Google Analytics sets cookies on your device to tell visits apart. We use this information only to see which guides people need, which pages are hard to find, and which languages and places to work on next. If you do not allow analytics, Google Analytics sets no cookies and keeps no identifier for you. It still receives a basic, cookieless signal that a page was viewed, which Google uses only to produce overall counts.

Server logs. Like almost every website, the company that hosts Emergency Guide keeps standard server logs: the IP address of the device that made a request, the page requested, the date and time, and the browser type. These logs are used to keep the site running and secure, and are deleted on the hosting company's normal schedule.

Email you send us. If you write to us, we receive your email address and whatever you put in the message. We use it only to answer you and to fix what you report, we delete it once the matter is dealt with, and we never add you to any mailing list.

Advertising, only with your consent. We plan to show ads from Google AdSense to help cover the cost of running the site. When ads are on and you allow advertising cookies, Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure how ads perform, and, if you allow it, show ads based on your interests and your visits to this and other websites. If you do not allow advertising cookies, any ads you see are not personalized. You can manage how Google personalizes ads at adssettings.google.com, and learn more or opt out of personalized ads from many companies at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.

Affiliate links. Some links on the site, for example to supplies on Amazon or to recovery services, are affiliate links. If you follow one and buy something, the seller may set its own cookie so it can pay us a small commission. That happens on the seller's site under the seller's privacy policy, and it costs you nothing extra. We do not receive your name, address or what else you buy.

What stays on your device

Some features store information in your own browser, not on our servers:

  • Offline copies. The site saves copies of its own pages on your device so they still work when the power or the network is down.
  • Checklists and settings. Boxes you tick on checklists, your language, and your light or dark display choice are saved in your browser's local storage. They never leave your device.
  • Your cookie choice. Your answer to the cookie banner is saved in your browser so we do not ask on every page.

You can remove all of this at any time by clearing the site data for emergency.guide in your browser settings.

Cookies

The site sets cookies only for the purposes you allow in the cookie banner: analytics, and advertising once ads are running. Sellers you reach through an affiliate link set their own cookies on their own sites. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.

Google

When analytics or ads are on, the information described above is processed by Google under Google's own terms and privacy policy. Google may process it on servers in the United States and other countries. You can read how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and how Google uses cookies in advertising at policies.google.com/technologies/ads. You can install Google's opt-out browser add-on to block Google Analytics on every site.

Emergency Guide links to government agencies, weather services, utilities and relief organizations. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for what they collect.

Children

The site is meant for a general audience, including families. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, or to object to its use. Emergency Guide holds nothing that identifies you, apart from any email you send us. Cookie based data is held by Google, which you can control with your cookie settings and Google's own tools, and if you write to us we will help as far as we can. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.

Changes to this policy

If we change what the site collects, we will update this page and the date at the top.
