Gas luh, semprotan mrico, lan dekontaminasi agen kontrol akeh lan pertolongan pertama¶
Nomer darurat beda-beda miturut negara. Kaca iki nggunakake 911, nomer kanggo Amerika Serikat lan Kanada. Akeh negara liya nggunakake 112, 999, utawa nomer liyane. Temokake nomer kanggo negara sampeyan.
Agen kontrol massa kimia (biasane diarani agen kontrol huru-hara utawa lachrymators) kalebu gas CS (2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile), OC pepper spray (oleoresin capsicum), PAVA (pelargonic acid vanillylamide, capsaicinoid sintetik), lan CN gas (chloroacetophenone). Apa sampeyan minangka komuter sing ora ana gandhengane sing kejiret ing cedhak demonstrasi, warga tetanggan sing jendela apartemen sing mbukak narik asap ing dalan, wartawan, utawa wong mlaku sing ora sengaja kena semprotan pertahanan pribadi, paparan akut nyebabake rasa nyeri sing langsung. Ing rong detik kontak karo membran mukosa lembab ing mripat, irung, tenggorokan, lan kulit sing lembab, senyawa kimia iki ngaktifake reseptor nyeri (khusus saluran ion TRPA1 lan TRPV1), nyebabake spasme kelopak mata sing ora disengaja (blepharospasm), wuta fungsional sementara, tersedak, sesak dada, lan kulit kobong.
Kanggo wong diwasa sing sehat ing udhara mbukak, efek akut saka gas luh lan semprotan mrica biasane sementara lan wiwit suda sajrone 15 nganti 45 menit sawise pindhah menyang hawa seger lan disiram kanthi bener. Nanging, ing papan sing ditutup, konsentrasi dhuwur, utawa ing wong sing duwe asma, penyakit paru obstruktif kronis (COPD), penyakit kardiovaskular, utawa lensa kontak, agen kontrol akeh bahan kimia bisa nyebabake bronkospasme sing ngancam nyawa (serangan asma parah), laringospasme, abrasi kornea, lan kulit abrasi tingkat kapindho. lan munggah gunung, siram mripat kanthi bener nganggo banyu sing resik utawa saline sing resik tanpa digosok, ngindhari mitos dalan sing mbebayani kayata nyedhot susu utawa antacid ing mripat, lan dekontaminasi sandhangan kanthi aman ing omah nyegah ciloko mata lan paru-paru permanen.
Apa iki saiki¶
- Pindhah langsung menyang udhara seger kanthi lumaku UPWIND lan UPHILL (elevasi sing luwih dhuwur). Aerosol gas luh lan partikel sing nguap luwih abot tinimbang udhara lan nglelebke ing lurung-lurung, subway, ruang paling ngisor, lan lantai lemah. Mlaku kanthi tenang (aja mlayu, amarga mlaku nggawe ambegan luwih jero lan luwih cepet) jejeg utawa menyang angin, lan menek menyang papan sing luwih dhuwur utawa loteng ing lantai ndhuwur adoh saka awan kumelun putih.
- Aja nggosok mripat, rai, utawa kulit nganggo tangan. Gas CS dudu gas ing suhu kamar; iku awan saka mikroskopis, partikel wêdakakêna kristal landhep. Nggosok tlapukan nggiling kristal mikroskopis iki langsung ing kornea kaya sandpaper, nyebabake abrasions kornea nglarani, lan nyebar lengo OC mrico semprotan luwih jero menyang pori-pori kulit.
- ** Copot lensa kontak langsung nganggo driji sing resik lan uncalan lensa alus.** Lensa kontak njebak kristal kimia klempakan lan lenga capsaicin langsung ing eyeball ing ngisor lensa, nyegah banyu saka ngumbah bahan kimia metu lan leleh utawa permanen contaminating lensa hidrogel alus. Cuci utawa usap driji dhisik, langsung jiwitake lensa, lan lensa sing alus dibuwang kanthi permanen.
- Kedhip cepet lan siram mripat saka sudhut njero (cedhak irung) metu nggunakake banyu adhem resik utawa uyah steril. Ngiringake sirah miring liwat sink utawa area lemah supaya mripat sing luwih elek madhep mudhun (supaya banyu limpasan sing terkontaminasi ora nyabrang jembatan irung menyang mripat liyane utawa mudhun menyang cangkeme). Tuangake banyu ngombe sing resik lan resik utawa saline normal 0,9% steril saka pojok njero mripat cedhak irung metu menyang kuping sajrone 10 nganti 15 menit terus-terusan.
- Aja ngetokna susu, antasida cair (Maalox), cuka, tempel soda manggang, utawa lenga masak menyang mripatmu. Senadyan gosip internet nyebar, susu susu sing ora steril, antasida cair rasa, utawa cuka menyang mata sing duwe goresan kimia mikroskopis ngenalake bakteri (Pseudomonas lan Staphylococcus), jamur sing bisa nyebabake partikulat, lan jamur. keratitis (ulkus kornea).** Gunakake mung saline steril utawa banyu sing bisa diombe resik ing mripat.
- ** Copot sandhangan njaba sing terkontaminasi tanpa narik kaos ing sirah, lan adus DINGIN.** Sawise tekan jedhing sing aman, potong t-shirt tarik sing terkontaminasi nganggo gunting (utawa klambi sing mbukak kancing) supaya sampeyan ora nyeret kain sing dilapisi bubuk menyang pasuryan lan mata. Langkah menyang padusan banyu adhem kanggo pisanan 5 menit sadurunge nglamar sabun piring entheng: banyu panas utawa anget mbukak pori-pori kulit lan reactivates kobong kuat saka wêdakakêna CS kristal lan lenga capsaicin.
Danger
** Hubungi layanan darurat langsung (911 ing Amerika Serikat lan Kanada, 112 ing Uni Eropa, 999 ing Inggris) yen wong sing kena penyakit asma utawa paru-paru lan ngalami wheezing, sesak ambegan abot, lambe kebiru-biruan, utawa stridor (nada dhuwur ngesak-esak), utawa yen mripat lara lan penglihatan kabur ora bisa pulih 40 menit sawise siram.** diwènèhaké ** inhaler ngluwari albuterol / salbutamol ** (2 kanggo 4 puffs liwat spacer saben 10 kanggo 20 menit minangka katuntun dening rencana tumindak asma sing), lan tau Pick munggah canister gas luh-panas karo tangan kosong (piroteknik CS canisters diobong ing liwat 400 derajat Celsius / 750 derajat Fahrenheit utawa nimbulaké bledosan termal katelu).

Ngenali agen kimia: CS Tear Gas vs OC Pepper Spray vs CN Mace¶
Understanding which chemical agent you were exposed to explains how it behaves on your body and on household surfaces. While all riot control agents cause immediate tearing and burning, their physical chemistry differs fundamentally.
| Agen Kimia | Chemical Class & Physical State | How It Is Deployed | Primary Physiological Symptoms | Solubility & Decontamination Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CS Gas (2-Chlorobenzalmalononitrile) | Solid crystalline micronized powder (melting point 93°C) dispersed by a pyrotechnic smoke grenade or solvent spray | White/gray billowing smoke canisters, blast dispersion grenades, or handheld aerosol streams | Instant burning of eyes/nose/throat within 3 to 10 seconds, involuntary eyelid clamping, heavy mucus/saliva drooling, coughing, chest tightness; burns worse on sweaty/wet skin | Insoluble in water (water flushes particles away mechanically by volume, not by dissolving them); hydrolyzes slowly; lingers on clothes and carpets for weeks |
| OC Pepper Spray (Oleoresin Capsicum) & PAVA | Oily resin extract from Capsicum chili peppers (capsaicinoids) or synthetic PAVA suspended in propylene glycol/oil carrier | Handheld aerosol streams, foggers, gel streams, or compressed-air "pepper balls" (paintball-style projectiles) | Immediate searing pain and neurogenic inflammation via TRPV1 receptors, temporary blindness for 20 to 45 minutes, intense skin redness (erythema), coughing and gagging | Lipophilic (oil-soluble) and hydrophobic: Pure water flushes the eyes via mechanical irrigation, while mild degreasing dish soap + cold water removes the oily resin from skin |
| CN Gas (Chloroacetophenone / original "Mace") | Solid crystalline ketone dispersed as an aerosol or thermal smoke | Older-generation tear gas cartridges and certain personal defense sprays (largely replaced by CS/OC due to higher toxicity) | Stronger direct corneal epithelial toxicity and higher risk of blistering allergic contact dermatitis and chemical skin burns than CS | Flush eyes for 15 to 20 minutes with copious water/saline; wash skin with cold water and mild soap; monitor closely for delayed skin blisters |
| HC Smoke / Colored Marker Smoke Grenades | Hexachloroethane / zinc oxide smoke or colored organic dye smoke (used for signaling/concealment, not pure tear gas) | Thick white, yellow, green, or purple smoke canisters | High inhalation danger: Zinc chloride smoke from HC canisters causes severe delayed chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema 6 to 24 hours later | Evacuate dense smoke immediately; seek hospital evaluation if exposed to heavy military/zinc smoke in an enclosed alley or room |
Why CS "Gas" is actually a microscopic solid powder¶
The most important fact to understand about CS tear gas is that it is not a true gas. At normal outdoor temperatures, CS is a white solid crystal similar to talcum powder or finely ground glass. When a tear-gas canister is fired, an internal pyrotechnic charge heats the solid CS until it vaporizes into the air; as soon as that hot vapor hits the cool outdoor air, it condenses back into a dense cloud of microscopic solid particles measuring 1 to 10 micrometers across.
Because CS is a solid powder that reacts chemically with moisture:
- Sweat and humidity activate the burn: CS crystals stick to sweaty foreheads, necks, waistbands, and wet shirts. As the crystal slowly reacts with skin moisture (hydrolysis), it releases microscopic amounts of hydrochloric acid and irritant breakdown products directly onto your nerve endings.
- Blowing dry air helps before washing: Once you walk out of a CS cloud into fresh wind, standing in a strong breeze with your arms outstretched for 3 to 5 minutes allows the wind to blow loose dry CS powder off your hair and clothes before water ever touches it.
Step-by-step eye irrigation protocol (and why street remedies cause blindness)¶
Your eyes are the most sensitive target of chemical crowd-control agents. When CS crystals or OC pepper spray droplets land on the tear film of the cornea, the trigeminal nerve triggers an immediate protective reflex called blepharospasm, your eyelids slam shut so tightly that you cannot open them by willpower alone.
How to flush your own or another person's eyes safely¶
- Position the head tilted sideways with the affected eye LOW: Have the person lean forward or tilt their head sideways at a 45-to-90-degree angle so the eye being flushed is on the bottom. Never tilt the head straight back while pouring water over the forehead: tilting the head back washes the chemical powder off the forehead and eyebrows straight into the eyes and down into the mouth.
- Hold the eyelids open gently with two clean fingers: Because involuntary blepharospasm clamps the eyelids shut, water poured over closed eyelids does nothing to clean the eyeball. Place your clean thumb on the upper eyebrow bone and your index finger on the lower cheekbone (never pressing directly on the eyeball itself) and gently pull the eyelids apart so the liquid stream hits the surface of the eye.
- Pour from the INNER corner (by the bridge of the nose) to the OUTER corner: Hold a squirt bottle of sterile 0.9% normal saline eye wash or a clean bottle of drinking water 2.5 to 5 centimeters (1 to 2 inches) above the inner corner of the eye (next to the bridge of the nose). Let a steady, low-pressure stream flow across the eye and run off the outer corner by the temple onto the ground. Have the person roll their eyeball up, down, left, and right while flushing so particles trapped under the upper and lower eyelids are washed out.
- Flush for a full 10 to 15 minutes: Do not stop after a two-second splash. Brief splashes of water on CS crystals briefly wet the powder and can make it sting more for 10 seconds before the volume of water carries the crystals away. Continuous irrigation for 10 to 15 minutes is what mechanically washes every crystal and oil droplet off the cornea.
Why you must NEVER put milk, Maalox (antacids), vinegar, or baby shampoo inside your eyes¶
During demonstrations and civil unrest, well-meaning bystanders frequently walk around carrying jugs of dairy milk, 50/50 mixtures of liquid antacid (LAW: Liquid Antacid and Water, such as Maalox or Mylanta), baking soda water, or baby shampoo to squirt into people's eyes. Ophthalmologists, poison control centers, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology warn strictly against putting any substance other than sterile saline or clean potable water into the human eye:
Warning
Why Milk, Maalox, and Baby Shampoo Damage the Cornea: 1. Dairy milk is not sterile: Unpasteurized or opened carton milk sitting in a warm backpack for hours teems with bacteria (Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). When CS crystals scratch microscopic grooves into your cornea, pouring warm milk into those scratches inoculates bacteria directly into the cornea, causing severe infectious keratitis and corneal ulcers that can permanently scar your vision. 2. Liquid antacids (Maalox / Mylanta) contain particulate grit and flavorings: Liquid antacids are suspensions of solid aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide particles mixed with peppermint oil, alcohol, parabens, and artificial sweeteners. In clinical studies, solid aluminum/magnesium particles lodge underneath the upper eyelid (the conjunctival fornix) and scratch the cornea further whenever you blink. 3. Baby shampoo strips the tear film and slows healing: Controlled clinical trials published in Academic Emergency Medicine comparing water/saline against baby shampoo, milk, and Maalox for OC pepper spray exposure found zero difference in pain relief among the solutions, and found that baby shampoo damages delicate corneal epithelial cells and strips away the natural lipid tear film. Plain sterile saline or clean bottled drinking water works just as fast with zero risk of infection or chemical irritation.
Skin and hair decontamination: the cold-water and dish-soap protocol¶
Once your eyes can open and your breathing is steady, you must remove the chemical residue clinging to your hair, face, neck, and clothing before you touch furniture, car seats, or family members at home.
Step 1: Undressing outside or inside a tiled bathroom¶
- Do not walk through your carpeted living room or sit on your fabric sofa wearing clothes exposed to tear gas or pepper spray. CS crystals and OC oils transfer instantly to upholstery and will off-gas and burn anyone who sits on that couch for weeks.
- Step into a tiled entryway, garage, or bathroom. Put on disposable nitrile or latex gloves if you have them.
- Never pull a contaminated t-shirt, sweatshirt, or sweater up over your head. Pulling a tight collar over your face scrapes all the CS powder and pepper spray that settled on your shoulders and chest straight into your eyes, nose, and mouth. Either unbutton the garment, pull your arms inside the sleeves first to lift it away from your face, or use heavy scissors to cut the shirt straight up the front seam and peel it off backward.
- Drop all contaminated clothes, shoes, and backpacks directly into a heavy-duty plastic trash bag and tie it shut until you are ready to wash them separately.
Step 2: The 5-minute COLD water shower rule¶
When you step into the shower to wash tear gas or pepper spray off your hair and body, turn the temperature knob all the way to COLD (or cool tepid water) for the first 5 minutes:
- Why hot showers are agony: Hot or warm water causes immediate cutaneous vasodilation (rushing blood to the skin), opens sweat glands and pores wide, and melts oily OC resin and CS crystals so they penetrate deeper into the skin, reactivating a violent wave of burning across your entire body.
- Stand upright and lean your head backward (or forward over the tub) when rinsing hair: Your hair acts like a giant air filter that catches huge amounts of airborne tear-gas dust. When you first rinse your hair with cold water, do not let the water from your scalp run down over your forehead into your eyes and down your chest into your groin (the groin and genitals have ultra-sensitive mucous membranes that will burn intensely if contaminated shower runoff washes down your torso). Bend forward at the waist so hair water drains straight onto the shower floor.
- Wash skin exposed to OC pepper spray with mild degreasing liquid dish soap: Because OC pepper spray is a chili oil resin (capsaicin), plain water alone rolls right off the oil on your skin. After rinsing loose powder off with cold water for 5 minutes, lather your face (keeping eyelids gently closed), neck, arms, and hands with mild liquid dishwashing detergent (such as Dawn or Fairy liquid) or a gentle oil-free facial cleanser to emulsify and lift the capsaicin oil off your skin, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
- Pat dry with disposable paper towels rather than rubbing vigorously with a cloth bath towel.
How to protect your apartment or house if tear gas is deployed on your street¶
When crowd-control agents are deployed on urban streets outside residential apartment buildings, ground-floor and second-floor units frequently fill with drifting CS aerosol through window cracks, air conditioners, and bathroom vents.
| Household Entry Vector | Immediate Action When Tear Gas Is Used Outside | How to Clean Up If Gas Already Entered the Room |
|---|---|---|
| Windows, balconies, and patio doors | Close and lock all windows immediately; press damp bath towels along the bottom windowsill crack and under the front apartment door | Wait until outdoor air clears completely, then open windows on opposite sides of the apartment with a box fan blowing OUTWARD to exhaust suspended dust |
| Window AC units and HVAC systems | Switch central HVAC systems to OFF and close fresh-air intake dampers; switch window AC units to OFF (or "Recirculate / Closed Vent" only) | Remove and discard paper HVAC air filters and wash plastic window AC mesh filters with cold water and dish soap outdoors while wearing gloves |
| Hard floors, counters, and tables | Cover exposed food, baby bottles, and pet water bowls immediately; discard any uncovered food that was sitting near an open window | NEVER dry-sweep or use a standard non-HEPA vacuum cleaner (which blasts settled CS dust right back into the air); wipe hard surfaces with cold water + dish soap or a 5% baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) solution using disposable wet rags |
| Contaminated laundry and backpacks | Keep sealed inside double plastic trash bags on the balcony or bathroom floor until ready to wash | Wash contaminated clothes completely separately from family laundry: run 2 full cold-water wash cycles using heavy-duty detergent, then run an empty rinse cycle to clear the drum |
How to safely launder tear-gas or pepper-spray clothing¶
Never toss a tear-gas-soaked jacket into the washing machine along with your child's clothes or your bedsheets; the chemical will transfer onto every item in the drum.
- Wear disposable nitrile gloves when transferring clothes from the plastic bag into the washing machine.
- Set the washing machine to COLD water only, highest water level, and an extra rinse cycle.
- Add standard liquid laundry detergent plus 120 milliliters (one-half cup) of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), which helps alkaline-hydrolyze and neutralize CS residue during the wash.
- Run the cold wash cycle twice before touching the clothes.
- Hang the clothes to air-dry outdoors or on a rack rather than putting them into a hot clothes dryer after the first wash (high dryer heat can bake any remaining trace of CS or OC into synthetic fibers and vent irritating fumes into your laundry room).
- Kanggo sepatu bot kulit, tas ransel nilon, kacamata, lan smartphone sing ora bisa dilebokake ing mesin cuci, usap metu kaping telu ing njaba nganggo handuk kertas sing diresiki ing banyu adhem lan sabun cuci piring, mbuwang saben handuk kertas sawise ngusap.
Njupuk kursus
Reading a guide is no substitute for hands-on practice. Consider taking a certified first aid, CPR, and emergency airway management course through the Red Cross, St John Ambulance, or a local medical training provider so you are prepared to handle respiratory distress and eye trauma under stress.
Pitakonan sing kerep ditakoni¶
Does wearing a surgical mask, N95 respirator, or wet bandana protect you from tear gas?
A standard surgical mask or cloth bandana offers very little protection against tear gas, and **tying a bandana soaked in water, vinegar, or lemon juice over your nose and mouth can actually make CS tear gas much worse.** Because CS powder activates on contact with moisture and is trapped by wet fabric fibers, breathing through a wet bandana traps a concentrated layer of wet, burning CS crystals right against your lips and nostrils with every breath. While a properly fit-tested **N95 / FFP2 or P100 particulate respirator** filters out many solid CS aerosol particles from entering your lungs, it provides zero protection for your eyes, and vaporized solvents still pass through unless paired with sealed swim/chemical goggles and a multi-gas organic vapor/acid gas cartridge.
Why did my skin start burning all over again when I took a shower the morning after being exposed to tear gas?
Secondary reactivation happens because tiny, invisible crystals of solid CS powder remain trapped in the hair follicles, scalp, eyebrows, or skin creases and do not dissolve in plain air. When you step into a warm morning shower 12 to 24 hours later, the warm water and steam open your skin pores and moisten those dormant crystals, triggering a fresh 10-minute wave of stinging and redness. Keep showers cool for the first 48 hours after heavy exposure and wash your hair and eyebrows thoroughly with shampoo and cool water while leaning backward so scalp runoff does not hit your face.
Can exposure to tear gas or pepper spray cause long-term health problems or affect pregnancy or menstruation?
While brief outdoor exposure in healthy individuals generally resolves without permanent injury once properly irrigated, heavy or enclosed-space exposure to CS or CN gas can cause lasting complications, including reactive airways dysfunction syndrome (RADS / persistent asthma-like cough), severe allergic contact dermatitis that flares up days later, and corneal scarring if crystals are rubbed into the eyes. Following large urban deployments, public health surveys have also documented temporary menstrual cycle disruptions (cramping and irregular bleeding) and heightened respiratory stress; pregnant individuals, infants, young children, and older adults should evacuate any area where chemical irritants may be used immediately and consult an obstetrician or physician if exposed.
What should I do if my dog or indoor cat was exposed to tear gas drifting through an window or pepper spray on a walk?
Pets have an extremely acute sense of smell and cannot understand why their eyes and nose are burning, which can cause them to paw frantically at their faces and scratch their own corneas. Immediately move the animal to fresh upwind air and keep them from rubbing their face on the carpet or with their paws. Gently flush your pet's eyes and nasal area with **sterile 0.9% saline solution or lukewarm/cool plain water** using a clean squirt bottle or soaked cotton balls, then bathe their fur coat using cool water and a mild pet shampoo (or gentle Dawn dish soap) while wearing gloves so they do not lick toxic CS or capsaicin residue off their fur later. Contact a veterinarian immediately if the pet shows open-mouth breathing (in cats), persistent coughing, or keeps an eye squinted shut.
Why should I never wear makeup, oil-based sunscreen, moisturizer, or Vaseline if there is a risk of chemical spray exposure?
Both OC pepper spray (oleoresin capsicum) and CS tear gas are **lipophilic (fat- and oil-loving) compounds.** If your face is coated in liquid foundation makeup, oil-based sunscreen, facial lotion, lip gloss, or petroleum jelly (Vaseline), the oily lotion acts like sticky flypaper that catches airborne CS crystals and dissolves capsaicin right into the cream sitting on your skin, holding the burning chemical against your face and making it much harder to wash off with water.
If a tear-gas canister lands near me on the pavement, is it safe to kick it or throw it away?
Never pick up a pyrotechnic tear-gas canister with your bare hands, and never kick a canister whose type you do not recognize. Standard pyrotechnic CS smoke canisters burn internally at **400 to 600 degrees Celsius (750 to 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit)**, hot enough to melt a synthetic glove right into the skin of your palm and cause deep third-degree thermal burns in one second. Even more dangerously, law enforcement agencies also deploy **concussion / flashbang grenades and rubber-pellet "stinger" blast grenades** that look almost identical to smoke canisters on the ground; reaching down to grab a blast grenade as it detonates causes permanent hand amputation, blindness, or fatal shrapnel trauma. Always move away from the canister upwind and put a solid barrier between yourself and the device.
