Kino kikole kati¶
If you discover a swollen, overheating, hissing, or smoking lithium-ion battery in your home, vehicle, or office, execute these six steps immediately:
- If the battery is actively hissing, popping, emitting white/gray smoke, or smell of sweet chemical nail-polish remover, EVACUATE immediately: Do not try to pick up a hissing or smoking device with your bare hands; a pouch cell about to enter thermal runaway jets a 1,000°C (1,832°F) directional blowtorch flame within seconds of the first hiss. Get every person and pet out of the room, close the door behind you to contain toxic hydrogen fluoride smoke, and call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) via our ennamba z’amangu dayirekita.
- If the battery is swollen ("puffy") but cold and quiet, unplug the charging cable from the wall FIRST: Unplug the power adapter at the wall outlet rather than yanking tightly on a hot connector port attached to the swollen device. Never plug a swollen laptop or phone back in "just for ten minutes to back up photos," as charging voltage is the #1 trigger that turns a swollen pouch into an active fire.
- Power down the device gently without squeezing the screen or trackpad: If the screen responds, shut the device completely down so electrical current stops flowing through the stressed cell. Do not slam a swollen laptop lid shut or press down on a lifting phone glass screen to "snap it back into place," which can crush the internal separator and cause an instant short circuit.
- Never puncture, prick, or try to "vent the gas" out of a swollen battery: Never poke a swollen battery pouch with a pin, knife, or screwdriver to let the gas out, and never pry a glued-down swollen battery out of a phone frame using a metal flathead screwdriver or butter knife. Piercing the thin aluminum-laminate pouch shorts the anode and cathode together and exposes lithium compounds to moisture in the air, igniting an immediate jet flame into your face.
- Quarantine the cold swollen device outdoors in a metal container with dry sand: Wearing safety glasses and thick leather or work gloves, carry the powered-off device outdoors (never through a crowded hallway or elevator if hot) and place it on bare concrete, patio stone, or inside a metal bucket/cooking pot half-filled with dry sand, vermiculite, or non-clumping clay cat litter at least 3 meters (10 feet) away from walls, decks, and cars.
- If a small phone or tablet catches fire indoors and can be safely doused, flood it with massive volumes of water: Unlike grease fires (where water is forbidden) or solid metallic lithium-metal primary batteries, standard rechargeable lithium-ion electronics fires are suppressed by drenching with continuous gallons of water from a hose, sink sprayer, or water bucket to cool the cells below their 150°C (302°F) runaway threshold (only after unplugging from wall AC power). For large e-bike or scooter battery packs, do not fight the fire, evacuate immediately.

E-bike and e-scooter battery fires block exit doors in under 15 seconds
While a smartphone battery contains only 1 to 2 small pouch cells (roughly 10 to 18 watt-hours), an electric bicycle, e-scooter, or hoverboard battery pack contains 30 to 100+ cylindrical 18650 or 21700 cells wired together (500 to 1,000+ watt-hours). When one cell in an e-bike battery enters thermal runaway, it triggers a violent chain-reaction explosion across all adjacent cells, filling an apartment hallway with blinding black/white toxic smoke and launching flaming metal cell projectiles across the room in under 15 seconds. Never charge or store an e-bike, e-scooter, or hoverboard directly inside your apartment front doorway or only hallway exit, if it ignites while you are sleeping, it will cut off your only escape path.
How to recognize early warning signs of a failing lithium battery¶
Lithium-ion polymer (pouch) batteries and cylindrical cells give distinct physical, thermal, and olfactory warning signs days or weeks before catastrophic failure.
Device symptom and hazard level comparison table¶
| Warning Symptom | How It Looks or Feels on Your Device | What Is Happening Inside the Battery | Urgency & Required Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Physical Swelling ("Spicy Pillow") | Laptops: Trackpad becomes stiff and refuses to click; bottom aluminum case bows outward so the laptop rocks on a flat table; keyboard deck bulges upward. Phones/Tablets: Screen lifts along one edge showing a sliver of internal backlight; back glass cracks from inside out; white/purple pressure blotch appears in the middle of the LCD screen. | Electrolyte decomposition (from over-discharge, heat, or aging) produces carbon dioxide (\(CO_2\)), carbon monoxide (\(CO\)), methane, and ethylene gas trapped inside the hermetic foil pouch. | High (Non-Active): Unplug immediately, shut down, do not close the laptop lid or squeeze the phone, and take to a repair shop or hazardous waste facility for safe removal. |
| 2. Abnormal Idle or Charging Heat | The phone, power bank, or laptop bottom feels too hot to hold comfortably against the back of your hand (>50°C / 122°F) while just sitting idle or charging slowly. | Microscopic metallic lithium dendrites (needle-like crystal whiskers) have grown across the internal polymer separator, creating an internal partial short-circuit that converts stored energy into heat. | High: Unplug at the wall immediately, remove thick protective phone cases so heat can dissipate, place on a stone/tile surface away from fabrics, and never use the device again until the battery is replaced. |
| 3. Sweet, Fruity, or Nail-Polish-Remover Odor | You smell a distinct sweet, fruity, metallic, or acetone/ether chemical odor coming from the USB port, speaker grille, or battery compartment. | Puleesa ya ggaasi ey’omunda esusse ekkomo ly’okubutuka kw’ekizibiti ky’ensawo ya foyiro, era ebizimbulukusa bya kaboni ow’obutonde ebiyinza okukwata omukka (dimethyl carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate) ne lithium hexafluorophosphate (\(LiPF_6\)) bikulukuta nnyo. | CRITICAL (Pre-Ignition): The pouch has ruptured and is venting flammable vapor. Move the device outdoors immediately using tongs/gloves if still cool, ventilate the room, and stay clear. |
| 4. Erratic Voltage Drops & Okuggalawo Amangu | Battery percentage jumps from 65% to 12%, or the device dies abruptly the moment you open a camera or heavy app even though the indicator says 40% charged. | Obuziyiza obw’omunda obw’amaanyi (obuziyiza) n’okufiirwa kwa ion za lithium ezikola munda mu butoffaali obuvunze; okucaajinga akatoffaali kano kuwaliriza okusiiga kwa lithium ku anode, okwanguya okukula kwa dendrite. | Moderate: Schedule a battery replacement soon; avoid leaving the device plugged in unattended overnight. |
| 5. Hissing, Clicking, Whistling, or White Smoke | A sharp pop or pressurized aerosol hiss/whistle sound followed by thick white or gray vapor shooting out of the seams. | Active Thermal Runaway: Internal temperature has passed 130°C to 150°C (266°F to 302°F); the separator has melted, and a 1,000°C jet flame will erupt within 2 to 10 seconds. | LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY: Drop/leave immediately, evacuate the room, close the door, and call 911 / 112 / 999. |
The physics and chemistry of thermal runaway (Why lithium-ion fires are unique)¶
Understanding why a lithium-ion fire behaves differently from a wood, paper, or kitchen grease fire explains why standard fire-smothering techniques fail:
- Stage 1: SEI Layer Breakdown (80°C to 120°C / 176°F to 248°F): Inside a healthy lithium-ion cell, a microscopic passivating film called the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) coats the graphite anode. If the battery is punctured, crushed, overcharged, or left on a scorching car dashboard, temperatures pass 80°C and the protective SEI layer dissolves, triggering an exothermic reaction between the bare lithium-intercalated anode and the liquid organic solvent.
- Stage 2: Polymer Separator Meltdown (130°C to 150°C / 266°F to 302°F): A paper-thin microporous polyethylene/polypropylene membrane (only 12 to 25 microns thick, thinner than plastic wrap) is the only barrier keeping the entire positive cathode and negative anode from touching. At 135°C (275°F), this plastic separator melts completely, causing a massive full-area internal short circuit.
- Stage 3: Cathode Oxygen Release & Self-Sustaining Runaway (180°C to 1,000°C / 356°F to 1,832°F): As heat spikes past 180°C, the metal-oxide cathode (such as Lithium Cobalt Oxide, Nickel Manganese Cobalt / NMC, or NCA) chemically decomposes and releases pure molecular oxygen (\(O_2\)) inside the sealed cell. Because the battery now contains its own internal oxygen supply + boiling flammable hydrocarbon solvent fuel + a 500°C ignition source, it erupts into a self-feeding blowtorch flame.
- Why smothering does not stop the reaction: Even if you bury a runaway lithium-ion battery under a fire blanket, foam, CO2, or baking soda, the cell continues its exothermic chemical reaction inside the pile until all its stored electrical and chemical energy is spent, and the moment the blanket is lifted, the superheated flammable gases re-ignite on contact with room air.
- Stage 4: Toxic Hydrogen Fluoride (\(HF\)) Off-Gassing: The electrolyte salt used in almost all commercial lithium-ion batteries is Lithium Hexafluorophosphate (\(LiPF_6\)). When exposed to fire and humidity, it decomposes into Hydrogen Fluoride (\(HF\)) gas (which turns into corrosive Hydrofluoric Acid upon touching the moist lining of human lungs and corneas), along with phosphoryl fluoride (\(POF_3\)), carbon monoxide (\(CO\)), and hydrogen cyanide (\(HCN\)). Breathing even a few lungfuls of dense white battery smoke in an enclosed room can cause fatal chemical lung damage and systemic fluoride poisoning.
How to extinguish or contain a lithium-ion fire safely¶
Fire service testing by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), UL Solutions (UL 9540A), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) establishes clear protocols for small consumer electronics vs large mobility packs.
Fire suppression method comparison: Lithium-Metal vs Lithium-Ion¶
A widespread myth on the internet claims "You must never put water on a phone or laptop battery fire because lithium explodes in water." That myth confuses primary non-rechargeable Lithium-Metal batteries (which contain solid elemental metallic lithium foil) with rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries (which contain zero solid metallic lithium chunks, only lithium ions intercalated in graphite and metal oxides).
| Suppression Agent | Small Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Fire (Phone, Tablet, Laptop, Power Bank) | Large E-Bike / E-Scooter / EV Battery Pack Fire | Why It Works or Fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copious Volumes of Water (Garden hose, sink sprayer, buckets of water) | BEST / RECOMMENDED BY FAA & NFPA (Once unplugged from AC wall power). | Requires firefighter high-flow fire hoses (thousands of liters) from outside; do not fight yourself. | Water is the only common household agent with high enough specific heat capacity to cool the battery cells below 130°C and stop heat from jumping from Cell #1 to Cell #2. Note: Use continuous gallons of water, never a tiny splash. |
| ABC Dry Chemical Extinguisher (Standard red home fire extinguisher) | Partially useful for surrounding curtains/carpet, but WILL NOT stop the battery itself from re-igniting. | Ineffective on the battery pack; pack will explosively re-ignite seconds after powder clears. | ABC monoammonium phosphate powder smothers flames on burning bedding or desk plastic around the phone, but has zero cooling effect, so the 600°C battery stays above runaway temperature and re-ignites. |
| CO2 or Halotron Extinguisher | Knocks down external flame momentarily, then immediately re-ignites. | Ineffective. | Displaces outside air briefly, but does not cool the internal cell reaction. |
| Submerging in a Metal Bucket of Water (Post-Fire) | Mandatory after flames stop (submerge outdoors for 24+ hours). | Firefighters submerge burned e-bike packs in specialized water/vermiculite overpack drums. | Prevents delayed re-ignition (stranded thermal energy in neighboring cells can cause a burned laptop or power bank to burst back into flames 2 to 12 hours after appearing "out"). |
| Dry Sand / Vermiculite / Fire Blanket | Kirungi ku preventive quarantine ya battery ezimba ennyogovu, oba okukuuma ennimi z'omuliro ezibuuka nga ogenda wala. | Kyabulabe singa omufaliso gw'omuliro gusuulibwa nnyo ku bbaatule ya e-bike efulumya empewo munda. | Okugezesa kw’ekitongole ekizikiriza omuliro kulaga nti okusuula omufaliso omuzito ogw’omuliro ku bbaatule ya ddigi ya yintaneeti ekola empewo kikwata ekire ekinene eky’omukka gwa haidrojeni ne ggaasi wa haidrokaboni ogutulika wansi w’omufaliso guno, ne kivaamu bbomu ekuba omukka-ekire nga omukka gwa oxygen ayingidde. |

Ebibuuzo ebitera okubuuzibwa¶
If I carefully poke a tiny pinhole in a swollen phone battery outdoors, will it let the gas out so I can keep using it?
**NO, never do this under any circumstances.** First, the gas inside a swollen battery is flammable hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide vapor mixed with toxic hydrofluoric acid precursors. Second, the swollen pouch is not an empty air pocket on top of the battery; the gas is trapped *between* the tightly wound microscopic layers of anode, separator, and cathode foil. Pushing a needle or pin even 1 millimeter through the outer pouch pierces those live energized layers together, creating an immediate dead short-circuit that shoots a 1,000°C jet of flame and molten metal out of the hole you just made. Even if it did not immediately catch fire, moisture from the outside air entering the pinhole reacts with the lithium salts to form hydrofluoric acid and destroys the cell.
Will putting a swollen battery in the refrigerator or freezer make the gas contract and fix the swelling?
**No.** Putting a swollen lithium-ion battery in your kitchen refrigerator or freezer is both ineffective and dangerous. While cold temperatures temporarily reduce gas volume slightly according to the ideal gas law, the chemical breakdown inside the battery is permanent and irreversible. Worse, placing a volatile, compromised battery containing toxic fluorophosphate solvents next to your family's food risks chemical contamination if the pouch leaks, and the condensation that forms on the battery when you pull it out of the cold freezer shorts out the external BMS circuitry and triggers fire when it warms back up.
Why did my old laptop or phone battery swell up sitting in a drawer when it hadn't been plugged in for two years?
Lithium-ion batteries do not only swell from overcharging; they also swell from **deep over-discharge during long-term storage**. Every lithium-ion battery self-discharges by a few percent each month even when turned off. If you put a phone or laptop into a drawer with only 10% battery and leave it for a year or two, the cell voltage drops below the critical threshold of **2.0 to 2.5 volts**. At that ultra-low voltage, the internal SEI layer breaks down and the copper current-collector foil begins dissolving into the electrolyte, generating hydrogen and carbon dioxide gases that puff the pouch up like a pillow even with zero external electricity applied.
What should I do if my phone slips down inside the crack of a motorized reclining couch or an airplane business-class seat?
**Do NOT press the motorized seat control button and do NOT force a manual recliner handle.** High-torque electric motors and steel scissor-mechanisms inside reclining living-room sofas, massage chairs, adjustable beds, and airline business-class seats exert hundreds of kilograms of shearing force. If a smartphone is wedged in the folding steel hinge and you move the seat, the metal frame bends and crushes the phone in half, instantly puncturing the lithium-ion battery and igniting the polyurethane foam cushions of the couch or aircraft cabin. On an airplane, **push your flight attendant call button immediately** without moving the seat; at home, unplug the motorized recliner from the wall first and look underneath with a flashlight to lift the phone out by hand.
Is it safe to buy a "LiPo Safe Fireproof Bag" to store or charge e-bike, drone, or RC car batteries?
Fiberglass-woven **LiPo Safe Bags** and metal ammunition cans (with the rubber lid gasket removed so the ammo can does not turn into a sealed pressure bomb) are helpful for **small RC hobbyist and drone battery packs (under 100 watt-hours)** because they contain flying sparks and reduce radiant flame spread long enough for you to grab a hose or evacuate. However, **independent fire tests show that thin zippered fabric LiPo bags often rupture, blow open at the zipper, or burn through when tested with large 500-to-1,000-watt-hour e-bike or scooter batteries**, and they do **not** filter out lethal hydrogen fluoride smoke. Never let a "fireproof bag" give you a false sense of security to charge a damaged or uncertified battery indoors overnight.
What should I do after a small battery fire in my home is out, how do I clean up the white powder and soot safely?
Never sweep or vacuum the white/black soot and chemical residue left behind by a burned lithium-ion battery without protective gear, and never touch the crusty residue around a ruptured cell with bare hands. The residue contains corrosive **lithium hydroxide, hydrofluoric acid salts, and toxic heavy-metal oxides (cobalt, nickel, manganese)**. First, ventilate the room thoroughly with open windows and fans blowing *outward* for several hours. Put on **thick nitrile rubber gloves, wrap-around eye goggles, long sleeves, and an N95/P100 particulate respirator**. Wipe hard surfaces using disposable wet paper towels dampened with water and mild detergent (never dry-sweep or use a standard household vacuum, which blows toxic dust into the air), seal all rags and burned debris inside heavy-duty double plastic bags inside a sealed bucket, and dispose of them through your municipal **Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)** center. Discard any porous items (pillows, clothes, mattresses, or food) that were exposed to the dense white battery smoke.
