A chemical splash to the eyes or skin in a school, university, or research laboratory requires immediate mechanical dilution with running water. Permanent corneal blindness or full-thickness skin destruction can begin within 10 to 30 seconds of contact with concentrated acids, strong alkalis, or corrosive organic solvents. Do not waste time looking for neutralizing solutions, reading a textbook, or walking to a distant restroom when an emergency eyewash station or deluge safety shower is in the room.
Speed and continuous water volume are the primary determinants of tissue survival. While one person assists the injured student or researcher at the safety station, a second person must alert the laboratory instructor or supervisor, call emergency medical services, and retrieve the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the exact chemical involved.
همدا اوس وکړئ¶
- Shout for help and reach the eyewash or safety shower within 10 seconds. Call out loudly so a lab partner or instructor can guide you if your vision is impaired. Move immediately to the nearest plumbed emergency eyewash station or deluge safety shower.
- Pull the activation handle and begin flushing immediately. Do not wait to remove clothing before turning on the safety shower. Get under the flowing water first, and keep your eyes or affected skin directly in the stream.
- Hold both eyelids open with your fingers and roll your eyeballs. Chemical pain triggers intense involuntary eyelid spasms (blepharospasm) that trap corrosive liquid against the cornea. Use your thumbs and index fingers to physically force both upper and lower eyelids wide open while rolling your eyes in all directions.
- Strip off contaminated clothing, jewelry, and contact lenses under the running water. Once the water is flowing, remove lab coats, shirts, pants, shoes, watches, and rings that may trap chemicals against the skin. If you wear contact lenses, pop them out after the first 1 to 2 minutes of flushing so water can reach the cornea underneath.
- Call emergency services and campus environmental health and safety. Have a bystander call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) or check بیړنۍ شمیرې, followed by your campus security or university emergency line.
- Flush continuously for at least 15 to 20 minutes (up to 60 minutes for strong alkalis). Never stop flushing early because the burning sensation improves. Keep the water flowing until paramedics arrive and take over irrigation.

Emergency eyewash triage and ocular chemical burns¶
According to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI/ISEA Z358.1) and the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), every laboratory eyewash station must be reachable within 10 seconds (roughly 16.8 meters or 55 feet) on an unobstructed path. When a chemical enters the eye, the first 10 seconds dictate whether the cornea remains transparent or scars permanently.
How to irrigate the eye properly¶
Many students make the mistake of bobbing their face in and out of the water stream or keeping their eyes squeezed shut while water splashes over their closed eyelids. Closed eyelids block water from reaching the conjunctival sacs (the deep pockets beneath the upper and lower lids where chemical droplets pool).
Place your face directly over the dual aerated nozzles. Use both hands to pry your eyelids apart, pulling the skin against the bony rim of your eye socket so your fingers do not press on the eyeball itself. If the victim is in too much pain to hold their own eyelids open, a bystander wearing nitrile or chemical-resistant gloves must hold the victim's eyelids open in the water stream. Direct the water from the inner corner of the eye (near the bridge of the nose) outward toward the temples so chemicals do not wash from an injured eye into an uninjured eye.
If a plumbed eyewash station is unavailable or blocked, immediately use a sink faucet with a hose attachment, an emergency drench hose, sterile saline bottles, or clean bottled drinking water. Do not delay irrigation while searching for sterile saline; clean tap water at high volume is far more effective than a small squeeze bottle of sterile drops.
Acid versus alkali (base) eye injuries¶
While both concentrated acids and strong alkalis cause severe ocular damage, they interact with human tissue through different biochemical mechanisms:
- Strong acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric, acetic acid): Acids cause coagulative necrosis. When acid contacts the surface of the eye, it denatures and precipitates tissue proteins rapidly, forming a coagulated crust or barrier that helps limit deeper penetration into the inner chambers of the eye (with the critical exception of hydrofluoric acid and heavy metal acids). Flush acids continuously for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes.
- Strong alkalis / bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide / lime): Alkalis cause liquefactive necrosis (saponification). Hydroxide ions react with the fatty acids in cell membranes, literally dissolving tissue barriers and burrowing deeper into the corneal stroma and anterior chamber over hours. Because alkalis penetrate deeply and remain active inside the tissue, flush alkali splashes continuously for 30 to 60 minutes until hospital arrival.
Danger
Never attempt to neutralize an acid splash in the eye or on the skin by washing with a weak base (such as sodium bicarbonate), and never wash an alkali burn with weak acid (such as vinegar or boric acid). Acid-base neutralization on living tissue generates an immediate exothermic heat reaction, adding a severe thermal burn on top of the chemical burn and worsening tissue destruction.
Deluge safety shower protocols and skin decontamination¶
When a chemical flask shatters, a pressurized line ruptures, or a beaker spills across a student's torso or legs, a sink or eyewash station cannot deliver enough water volume. Overhead deluge safety showers are engineered to deliver at least 75.7 liters (20 gallons) of tepid water per minute across the entire body.
Modesty versus survival under the safety shower¶
Hesitation out of embarrassment is one of the leading causes of severe third-degree chemical burns in high school and undergraduate teaching laboratories. Cotton, polyester, and denim clothing act like a sponge, holding concentrated acid or solvent directly against the epidermis and accelerating absorption into the bloodstream.
- Pull the overhead triangle handle or chain first. Once the deluge starts, remove every article of contaminated clothing while standing under the water.
- Have bystanders create a privacy screen. The instructor and classmates should immediately clear uninvolved students from the laboratory and hold up clean lab coats, emergency blankets, or shower curtains around the station to shield the victim's privacy while they undress.
- Cut clothing rather than pulling it over the head. If a pullover sweatshirt or T-shirt is soaked with corrosive liquid, use safety shears or scissors to cut the garment down the front so you do not wipe the chemical across your face and eyes while pulling it off.
- Remove shoes, socks, watches, and rings. Liquid running down the body under the safety shower frequently pools inside sneakers, leather boots, and beneath watchbands, causing deep chemical burns around the ankles and wrists.
- Do not rub or scrub the skin. Let the flowing water rinse the chemical away. Scrubbing chemically damaged skin strips away fragile epidermal layers and drives toxic compounds deeper into dermal capillaries.
Chemical class reference and special hazards¶
Not all laboratory reagents behave identically when exposed to water or air. While plain running water is the universal immediate response for human tissue splashes, your laboratory team and responding paramedics must check the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) immediately for compound-specific medical protocols.

Warning
Hydrofluoric acid (\(HF\)) is uniquely lethal among laboratory chemicals. Even a diluted splash covering less than 2 percent of the body surface area can cause fatal hypocalcemia and cardiac arrest hours later, often with delayed pain. Every university laboratory using \(HF\) must keep unexpired calcium gluconate gel and nebulizer solutions in the immediate work area.
Managing laboratory floor and benchtop spills¶
If a chemical container breaks on a workbench or floor without splashing anyone, your immediate decision is whether the spill is a simple (incidental) spill or a complex (major) spill requiring evacuation.
When to evacuate the laboratory immediately¶
Never attempt to clean up a spill yourself if any of the following conditions apply:
- You do not know the identity or concentration of the spilled liquid or powder.
- The chemical gives off toxic, corrosive, or asphyxiating vapors (such as bromine, fuming nitric acid, concentrated ammonia, cyanide compounds, or mercaptans) outside a working fume hood.
- The spill involves a highly flammable solvent (such as diethyl ether, hexane, or benzene) exceeding 500 milliliters (about 1 pint) or near an open flame, hot plate, or sparking motor.
- The spill involves metallic mercury (such as a broken mercury thermometer or manometer), radioactive isotopes, or high-consequence biological agents (Biosafety Level 2 or 3 pathogens).
- A ventilation fume hood fails or begins beeping during a hazardous reaction.
Evacuation steps for a major lab spill: 1. Shout to alert everyone in the room: "Chemical spill, evacuate the lab." 2. Extinguish open Bunsen burners or turn off hot plates only if you can reach the main gas shutoff valve or switch without stepping near the spill or breathing fumes. 3. Lower the sash on chemical fume hoods as you exit to maximize exhaust draw and contain vapors. 4. Close the laboratory doors behind you to isolate the atmosphere, post a warning sign or stand guard outside the door so nobody walks in, and pull the building fire alarm if flammable vapors or toxic gases threaten adjacent hallways. 5. Call your campus Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) emergency dispatch and local fire department hazardous materials (HazMat) team from a safe location.
Cleaning up a minor incidental spill safely¶
If you are trained, the chemical is low toxicity, the volume is small, and there is no inhalation hazard, use the laboratory's dedicated chemical spill kit:
- Put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) first. Wear splash goggles (not just safety glasses), a lab coat, closed-toe shoes, and two pairs of compatible chemical-resistant gloves (check the SDS, as nitric acid and chlorinated solvents rapidly degrade thin latex or standard nitrile).
- Contain the perimeter. Pour universal absorbent pillows, vermiculite, or neutralizing dikes around the outer edge of the puddle first to stop it from running into floor drains or under cabinets. Never wash hazardous laboratory chemicals down a sanitary sink or floor drain.
- Absorb or neutralize from the outside inward. Use acid neutralizer (typically sodium carbonate with a color-changing pH indicator) for acid spills, caustic neutralizer (citric acid base) for alkali spills, or activated carbon / universal absorbent pads for organic solvents.
- Scoop and bag as hazardous waste. Use a plastic dustpan and brush (never a metal scraper that could spark around solvents) to place the saturated absorbent into thick polyethylene hazardous waste bags, seal them, and attach a completed hazardous waste label listing the exact chemical contents.
Laboratory fires and clothing ignition¶
School and university labs combine flammable organic solvents, compressed oxidizing gases, and ignition sources like Bunsen burners and heating mantles.
- If a small fire starts inside a beaker or flask: Do not pick up the burning glassware and do not pour water into burning organic solvents or oils. Use beaker tongs or heat-resistant gloves to slide a ceramic watch glass, a larger inverted beaker, or a metal lid over the mouth of the vessel to suffocate the flames, and turn off the heat source beneath it.
- If a person's lab coat or hair catches fire: Stop them from running, as running fans the flames upward toward the face and airway. Force them to the floor immediately to Stop, Drop, and Roll, smother the flames by wrapping them tightly in a wool or treated fiberglass fire blanket from the wall cabinet, or guide them directly under the deluge safety shower if it is within two steps (unless they are covered in water-reactive alkali metals).
- Selecting the right fire extinguisher: Check the extinguisher rating before discharging. Use a Class ABC dry chemical or Class BC carbon dioxide (\(CO_2\)) extinguisher for solvent and electrical lab fires. Never use a water, foam, or standard ABC extinguisher on burning alkali or alkaline earth metals (sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium, or aluminum hydride); these require a specialized Class D dry powder extinguisher or dry sand.
