Package Theft and Porch Piracy Defense

Package theft from front doorsteps, porches, apartment lobbies, and mailboxes has become a widespread crime. Porch pirates often trail delivery vehicles through neighborhoods to steal packages immediately after delivery.

Immediate Steps When a Package Is Stolen

  1. Verify Delivery Confirmation: Check tracking numbers to confirm the carrier marked the package as delivered. Review delivery photos if provided.
  2. Check Surrounding Areas: Search behind bushes, side doors, garage entries, and ask neighbors if the package was delivered to an adjacent address by mistake.
  3. Check Video Doorbell and Security Footage: Review security camera footage to capture the exact time of theft, suspect descriptions, and getaway vehicle details (license plate, make, color).
  4. File a Carrier Claim and Contact the Retailer:
  5. Report the missing package to the merchant or online seller. Major retailers frequently offer replacements or refunds for stolen deliveries.
  6. File an official missing package report with the shipping carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, or Amazon).
  7. Report to Local Police: Submit a police report online or call the non-emergency police number. Provide video footage and tracking logs. Police reports are often required for insurance and credit card claims.
  8. File a Credit Card Purchase Protection Claim: Many credit card issuers include purchase protection benefits covering stolen items bought with the card within 90 days.

Preventing Future Package Theft

  • Use Secure Delivery Hubs: Direct deliveries to local Amazon Lockers, UPS Access Points, FedEx Office locations, or PO Boxes.
  • Require Delivery Signatures: Select signature-required shipping options for valuable electronics and high-value orders.
  • Install Lockable Package Drop Boxes: Place a heavy-duty, lockable delivery box or porch locker on your property.
  • Set Up Real-Time Delivery Notifications: Sign up for carrier alert applications (USPS Informed Delivery, UPS My Choice, FedEx Delivery Manager) to retrieve packages immediately upon drop-off.
  • Request Rear Door or Hidden Delivery: Specify delivery instructions directing drivers to leave packages behind side gates or obscured out of view from the street.
