Hailstorms: atmospheric physics, personal safety, and property protection¶
Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.
A severe hailstorm is one of the most violent and rapidly developing weather phenomena produced by severe convective thunderstorms. Within seconds, a calm afternoon sky can darken into deep greenish-black, followed by an overwhelming acoustic roar as millions of solid ice projectiles descend from the upper troposphere.
Hail is not frozen rain or sleet. Hailstones are dense, layered spheres of solid ice forged inside powerful thunderstorm updrafts that can exceed speeds of 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour). Large hailstones descend at terminal velocities exceeding 130 kilometers per hour (80 miles per hour). Projectiles of this mass and velocity shatter tempered automotive glass, puncture residential roof decks, strip commercial siding, kill livestock, and inflict fatal blunt-force head trauma on exposed human beings.
Understanding the atmospheric mechanics of hail, recognizing warning signs of a tornadic supercell, avoiding dangerous driving behaviors (such as stopping beneath highway overpasses), protecting family members and companion animals, and methodically assessing structural damage ensures personal safety and limits financial catastrophe.
Atmospheric physics: how severe hail forms¶
Hailstones are formed exclusively within deep convective storms, primarily supercells, possessing intense updrafts and abundant supercooled liquid water.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
THE HAIL GENERATION CYCLE
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. UPDRAFT INJECTION : Powerful convective winds (100 to 160+ km/h)
loft rain droplets above the freezing level.
2. SUPERCOOLED WATER : Droplets remain liquid below 0 deg C (32 F)
until colliding with condensation nuclei.
3. CONCENTRIC LAYERING : Ice pellets are suspended in the freezing
cloud zone, collecting layers of clear and
milky rime ice as they cycle through updrafts.
4. TERMINAL MASS : When hailstone weight exceeds the upward lift
capacity of the updraft, it plunges to earth.

Hailstone diameter, terminal velocity, and kinetic energy¶
The destructive capacity of hail is governed by Newtonian physics: kinetic energy increases quadratically with velocity (\(KE = \frac{1}{2}mv^2\)). As a hailstone grows in diameter, its mass increases by the cube of its radius, causing its downward terminal velocity to surge.
| Hailstone size description | Measured diameter | Approximate terminal fall velocity | Kinetic impact force and damage potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pea to Marble | 6 to 13 mm (0.25 to 0.5 in) | 35 to 45 km/h (22 to 28 mph) | Shreds delicate garden foliage; minimal structural damage. |
| Quarter (Severe Threshold) | 25 mm (1.0 inch) | 70 to 80 km/h (44 to 50 mph) | National Weather Service severe storm threshold; dents vehicles, breaks shingles. |
| Golf Ball | 45 mm (1.75 inches) | 95 to 105 km/h (60 to 65 mph) | Shatters vehicle windshields, cracks vinyl siding, inflicts severe human bruising. |
| Baseball | 70 mm (2.75 inches) | 120 to 135 km/h (75 to 84 mph) | Punctuates through plywood roof decking; fractures human skulls; kills cattle. |
| Softball / Grapefruit | 100 to 115 mm (4.0 to 4.5 in) | 145 to 175 km/h (90 to 110 mph) | Destroys residential roofs; penetrates ceilings; lethal to any unsheltered person. |
Immediate 60-second emergency response protocol¶
When a thunderstorm suddenly produces heavy hail, execute this safety sequence based on your immediate location.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
HAILSTORM IMMEDIATE ACTION PROTOCOL
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
INDOORS : Move to an interior room on the lowest floor.
Stay far away from windows, glass doors, and skylights.
IN VEHICLE: Pull off active roadway into a covered structure.
NEVER block traffic under a highway overpass.
OUTDOORS : Cover head and neck with backpack, helmet, or jacket.
Seek immediate structural shelter; avoid solitary trees.
PETS/KIDS : Bring all animals indoors immediately; keep kids calm.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Indoor shelter protocol: avoiding flying glass and shrapnel¶
Many people mistakenly believe they are entirely safe simply by being inside a house. Driven by horizontal thunderstorm outflow winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour), hailstones strike vertical exterior windows with ballistic force.

Essential indoor protective actions¶
- Move to an Interior Room on the Lowest Floor: Relocate to a central hallway, windowless bathroom, walk-in closet, or basement. Put as many solid structural walls between yourself and the exterior weather as possible.
- Close Heavy Drapes and Blinds: If you have five seconds before the core of the storm hits, close all interior window blinds, horizontal shutters, and heavy curtains. If the window glass shatters under hail impact, fabric drapes catch flying glass fragments and prevent shrapnel from spraying across living areas.
- Avoid Skylights and Sunrooms: Hail strikes horizontal and angled roof glass with 100 percent of its vertical kinetic energy. Skylights shatter frequently during hailstorms, showering broken glass down stairwells and bathrooms.
- Protect Children and Pets from Falling Debris: If living in a manufactured home or a house with an unreinforced metal roof, hail can puncture thin roof panels. Gather family members beneath sturdy furniture (such as a heavy wooden dining table) and cover infants and children with thick quilts or pillows.
Driving safety: the highway overpass myth and vehicle survival¶
Hail causes catastrophic damage to motor vehicles. Navigating a hailstorm while driving requires knowing where to seek shelter and understanding the mechanical limits of automotive safety glass.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
THE DEADLY HIGHWAY OVERPASS HAZARD
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
NEVER STOP OR PARK UNDER A HIGHWAY OVERPASS DURING SEVERE STORMS.

WHY: Drivers panicking to protect their vehicle paint frequently park
across active highway lanes beneath overpasses, completely blocking the
freeway. Oncoming high-speed traffic blinded by torrential rain and
hail crashes into parked vehicles, triggering fatal 20-car pileups.

Furthermore, overpasses create wind tunnels that concentrate flying
debris, offering zero protection from horizontal wind-driven hail.

[Covered Structure Accessible] [Open Highway / No Cover Available]
- Service station canopy - Pull COMPLETELY off roadway onto shoulder
- Commercial parking garage - Angle vehicle NOSE INTO THE WIND
- Car wash bay - Front laminated windshield takes impact
- Bank drive-through - Lie down across seats, back to glass
- Cover face and children with coats
Safe vehicle defensive maneuvering¶
- Exit to Covered Commercial Structures: Exit the highway immediately and seek shelter under a solid, wide canopy: a service station fuel canopy, a multi-story commercial parking garage, a self-service car wash bay, or a bank drive-through lane.
- Angle the Vehicle Nose Into the Wind: If no overhead cover exists, pull completely off the travel lanes onto a wide paved shoulder or parking lot. Turn your vehicle so the front bumper and windshield face directly into the oncoming wind and hail.
- Windshield vs Side Windows: Automotive windshields are constructed from laminated safety glass containing a tough Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) plastic interlayer sandwiched between two sheets of glass. Even if baseball-sized hail cracks and crazes the windshield into a spiderweb pattern, the plastic interlayer prevents the glass from collapsing into the cabin.
- In contrast, vehicle side and rear windows are made of tempered glass, which shatters instantly into thousands of loose granular fragments upon direct impact.
- Lie Down and Protect Your Face: Lie flat across the front seats or on the floorboard with your back turned to the side windows. Pull jackets, blankets, or floor mats over your head and face to protect against flying glass fragments if side windows fail.
Outdoor survival: when caught in the open¶
Being caught outdoors without structural shelter during a severe hailstorm is a life-threatening trauma emergency. Severe blunt-force contusions, concussions, and skull fractures occur rapidly.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
OUTDOOR HAIL SURVIVAL CHECKLIST
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. SHIELD HEAD & NECK FIRST : Use backpacks, motorcycle helmets, heavy
jackets, or crossed forearms over skull.
2. DO NOT SHELTER UNDER TREES: Trees attract lightning and shed heavy
branches under severe hail loading.
3. CROUCH LOW TO GROUND : Turn your back to the wind to protect eyes
and facial bones from horizontal impacts.
4. IDENTIFY LOW TERRAIN : Seek roadside ditches or culverts, but
monitor continuously for flash flooding.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
The danger of solitary trees¶
When large hail falls, people instinctively run beneath large trees for canopy cover. This is a fatal mistake: - Severe thunderstorms that produce hail generate intense cloud-to-ground lightning. Standing beneath or near tall, isolated trees drastically increases your risk of a direct or side-flash lightning strike. - Heavy hail stripping leaves and bark combines with microburst winds to snap heavy tree limbs (widow-makers), dropping hundreds of kilograms of timber onto people sheltering below.
Caring for children and companion animals¶
Severe hailstorms create intense psychological terror. The deafening roar of hail striking roofs (frequently exceeding 95 to 105 decibels) resembles an incoming freight train or explosive artillery barrage.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
FAMILY AND PET HAIL PROTECTION
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. NOISE MITIGATION FOR CHILDREN
The acoustic volume of hail creates acute panic in young children.
- Place noise-canceling headphones, earmuffs, or gaming headsets
on children to muffle the terrifying roar.
- Maintain a calm, smiling, and grounded demeanor.
- Provide analog entertainment: coloring books, board games, or
singing games to maintain distraction during the 15-minute storm.

2. SECURE PETS AND LIVESTOCK EARLY
- Bring dogs and cats inside the home hours before the storm hits.
Frightened dogs frequently jump fences and bolt into traffic
during the pre-storm barometric pressure plunge.
- Move horses, cattle, and outdoor livestock into covered barns or
stables. Severe hail causes blindness, lacerations, and fatal
head trauma in open pasture animals.
- Create a secure pet haven in a windowless room with familiar
bedding, chew toys, and anxiety wraps (ThunderShirts).
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Post-storm inspection and avoiding contractor fraud¶

Post-hail structural damage checklist¶
| Structural component | Visual indicators of hail damage | Required emergency action |
|---|---|---|
| Asphalt Shingle Roofs | Dark, circular indentations where colored mineral granules were blasted away, exposing black asphalt substrate; cracked or bruised fiberglass matting. | Contact insurance company to schedule adjuster inspection. Do not climb wet roofs. |
| Metal Flashing & Valleys | Prominent dents and gouges along roof valleys, chimney flashing, and metal ridge vents. | Metal damage provides proof of hail size to insurance adjusters even if shingles look intact. |
| Outdoor AC Condensers | High-velocity hail crushes the delicate aluminum heat-dissipating fins on outdoor air conditioner units, blocking airflow. | Use a fin comb tool to straighten bent fins, or file an insurance claim for coil replacement. |
| Windows & Skylights | Cracked outer panes, shattered insulated glass seals (fogging), punctured insect screening. | Board up broken panes with plywood or seal with 6-mil plastic sheeting to block rainwater. |
How to avoid predatory "Storm Chaser" contractor scams¶
Within hours of a severe hailstorm, out-of-state roofing crews and unlicensed contractors descend upon damaged neighborhoods: - Never Sign an "Assignment of Benefits" (AOB) Form: An AOB legally signs over your entire insurance claim rights to the contractor, allowing them to bill your insurance company directly while you lose all control over repairs. - Demand Proof of Local Licensing and Worker's Compensation Insurance: Verify that the roofing company maintains a permanent physical business address in your state and possesses active liability and worker's compensation insurance. - Never Pay 100 Percent Upfront in Cash: Reputable local contractors do not demand full payment before materials are delivered and work commences. - Obtain an Independent Insurance Adjuster Review: Have your insurance company's official adjuster inspect the roof before signing any binding repair contracts.
