Nitrous Oxide ('Galaxy Gas' / Tank) Toxicity: Sudden Spinal Cord Paralysis and Cryogenic Mouth Burns¶
Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.
Over the past five years, the non-medical inhalation of nitrous oxide (\(\text{N}_2\text{O}\), "laughing gas") has undergone an alarming technological shift that has filled neurology wards, burn units, and emergency departments across North America, Europe, and Australia with previously healthy teenagers and young adults who suddenly cannot walk. Historically inhaled from tiny 8-gram steel whipped-cream chargers ("whippets" or "nangs"), recreational nitrous oxide is now mass-marketed in smoke shops, convenience stores, and online retailers inside brightly colored, candy-flavored 580-gram to 2,000-gram (2-liter to 3.3-liter) pressurized steel cylinders sold under brand names such as "Galaxy Gas", "Miami Magic", "Cosmic Gas", " Baking Bad", "InfusionMax", and "SmartWhip". A single 2,000-gram tank holds the equivalent of 250 individual whippet chargers, enabling users to inhale hundreds or thousands of liters of pure \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) continuously over a single weekend. This massive surge in exposure triggers two catastrophic medical emergencies: acute cryogenic frostbite of the mouth, vocal cords, and inner thighs (when liquid \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) expands at -40 to -88 degrees Celsius [-40 to -126 degrees Fahrenheit] directly from a tank nozzle or against the legs), and Subacute Combined Degeneration (SCD) of the spinal cord, a paralyzing demyelination of the dorsal and lateral spinal columns caused by irreversible chemical oxidation of the cobalt atom inside Vitamin B12 (cobalamin).
What catches patients, families, and even general emergency room physicians off guard is a critical laboratory diagnostic trap: when a heavy nitrous oxide user arrives at the Emergency Department with numbness in their fingers and toes, "pins and needles" (paresthesias), electric-shock sensations shooting down their spine when they bend their neck (Lhermitte's sign), bilateral foot drop, or complete inability to stand (sensory ataxia and paraplegia), a standard serum Vitamin B12 blood test (total cobalamin) comes back completely NORMAL in 30 to 50 percent of cases. Because nitrous oxide chemically oxidizes the cobalt core of B12 from active monovalent Co+ to biologically dead trivalent Co3+ without destroying the outer cobalamin ring, the hospital immunoassay machine counts the oxidized, non-functional B12 molecules as "normal" while the patient's spinal cord is actively starving and demyelinating. Furthermore, because nitrous oxide blocks the enzyme methionine synthase, blood levels of homocysteine skyrocket to prothrombotic levels (> 50 to 150+ umol/L), triggering life-threatening deep vein thrombosis (DVT), bilateral pulmonary embolism (PE), and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST / brain clots) in 20-year-olds. If you face an emergency right now, call your local emergency numbers immediately, and consult our sibling guides on inhalant poisoning and sudden sniffing death, substance use and drug addiction, and supporting a family member with addiction.
Do this now¶
- STOP ALL NITROUS OXIDE INHALATION IMMEDIATELY at the very first sign of tingling, numbness, or "pins and needles" in your toes, fingertips, or legs. Even one more session of nitrous oxide inhalation immediately oxidizes and destroys whatever Vitamin B12 injections or pills you just took, turning reversible nerve tingling into permanent wheelchair paralysis and bladder/bowel incontinence.
- Call your local emergency number (911 in the US/Canada, 112 in the EU, 999 in the UK) IMMEDIATELY if someone inhaling from a nitrous tank develops a hoarse voice, whistling/squeaky breathing (stridor), swollen/blistered lips or tongue, chest pain, shortness of breath, or blue lips. Inhaling directly from a 580 g to 2,000 g cylinder nozzle (instead of a balloon) sprays liquid nitrous oxide at
-55 to -88 degrees Celsius (-67 to -126 degrees Fahrenheit)into the throat, causing rapid laryngeal frostbite swelling that seals the windpipe shut within 30 to 90 minutes, or high-pressure barotrauma (ruptured lungs / pneumomediastinum). - If a nitrous oxide user develops stumbling, weakness in the legs, inability to walk a straight line, foot drop, numbness, or difficulty urinating, go to a hospital Emergency Department TODAY for urgent Intramuscular Hydroxocobalamin (Vitamin B12) injections. Do not wait for an outpatient neurology appointment weeks away; spinal cord myelin destruction accelerates daily until intramuscular B12 replacement (
1,000 mcg IMdaily/alternating days) is started. - Tell the Emergency Department physician explicitly to order Serum Methylmalonic Acid (
MMA), Plasma Total Homocysteine (tHcy), Holotranscobalamin (Active B12), and a Sagittal/Axial Cervical & Thoracic Spine MRI. Warn the doctor that total serum Vitamin B12 is falsely normal in up to half of nitrous oxide spinal cord paralysis patients, whereas methylmalonic acid (MMA) and homocysteine (tHcy) are elevated in over 98 percent of cases. - NEVER take Folic Acid (Folate / Vitamin B9) tablets BEFORE Vitamin B12 injections have been given. In a patient with nitrous-oxide-induced B12 inactivation, giving folic acid alone ("the folate trap") diverts remaining methyl groups toward DNA synthesis and rapidly worsens spinal cord demyelination.
- If the person has white, grey, or hard frozen patches or deep purple blisters on their inner thighs (from holding a freezing 2 L steel tank between their legs), warm the skin gently in lukewarm water (37 to 39 degrees Celsius / 98.6 to 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and seek a Burn Center evaluation. Never rub frozen skin or apply dry heat; "whippet thigh" cryogenic burns are almost universally deep third-degree (full-thickness) burns requiring surgical excision and skin grafting.
Danger
Why Inhaling Directly From a 2 L "Galaxy Gas" Tank Nozzle Causes Fatal Throat Freezing and Lung Rupture. Large 580-gram to 2,000-gram nitrous oxide cylinders store liquefied \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) under 5,000 kilopascals (50 bar / 725+ psi) of pressure. When a user twists the plastic nozzle open directly inside their mouth, two physical disasters occur simultaneously: first, adiabatic gas expansion (the Joule-Thomson effect) drops the nozzle and exiting gas jet to -55 to -88.5 degrees Celsius (-67 to -127 degrees Fahrenheit), flash-freezing the lips, hard palate, uvula, and vocal cords into solid ice that swells shut upon thawing. Second, if the valve sticks open for even a fraction of a second, high-pressure gas blasts down the trachea, rupturing the alveoli and forcing air into the chest cavity (tension pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and subcutaneous emphysema where the neck skin crackles like bubble wrap).

Part 1: How Nitrous Oxide Destroys the Spinal Cord & Triggers Blood Clots (The Cobalt Oxidation Mechanism)¶
Many young people assume nitrous oxide is completely harmless because dentists and obstetricians use "laughing gas" for brief procedural analgesia. However, medical nitrous oxide is administered mixed with 30 to 50 percent oxygen for a single brief procedure, whereas recreational tank users inhale 100 percent pure \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) repeatedly over days, weeks, or months.
1. Irreversible Chemical Oxidation of Vitamin B12's Cobalt Core (Co+ to Co3+)¶
Human Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) contains a single cobalt atom at the center of a corrin ring. To function as an enzymatic cofactor in the human nervous system and bone marrow, that cobalt atom must remain in its reduced monovalent (Co+) state.
When nitrous oxide (\(\text{N}_2\text{O}\)) diffuses into the blood and tissues, it reacts directly and irreversibly with the reduced cobalt core of Vitamin B12:
Once oxidized to the trivalent Co3+ state, the Vitamin B12 molecule is permanently inactivated and excreted, shutting down the two essential B12-dependent enzymatic pathways in the human body:
- The Cytoplasmic Methionine Synthase (
MS) Pathway (Methylcobalamin):- Normally, methionine synthase uses methyl-B12 to transfer a methyl group from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to homocysteine, creating methionine and S-adenosylmethionine (
SAM). - Result 1 (Myelin Sheath Collapse):
SAMis the mandatory methyl donor required to maintain myelin basic protein and phosphatidylcholine in the insulating sheaths of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. WithoutSAM, myelin sheaths unravel and vacuolate (Subacute Combined Degeneration). - Result 2 (Lethal Hyperhomocysteinemia & Blood Clots): Because homocysteine can no longer be converted into methionine, toxic homocysteine (
tHcy) accumulates to 50 to 200+ micromoles per liter in the bloodstream. Severe hyperhomocysteinemia strips vascular endothelial cells and activates the clotting cascade, causing unprovoked Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), massive Pulmonary Embolism (PE), Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST), and acute arterial stroke/myocardial infarction in healthy teenagers and 20-year-olds.
- Normally, methionine synthase uses methyl-B12 to transfer a methyl group from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to homocysteine, creating methionine and S-adenosylmethionine (
- The Mitochondrial Methylmalonyl-CoA Mutase (
MMCoAM) Pathway (Adenosylcobalamin):- Normally, adenosyl-B12 converts L-methylmalonyl-CoA into succinyl-CoA for the Krebs cycle and normal fatty acid synthesis.
- Result: When \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) inactivates B12, methylmalonic acid (
MMA) and propionyl-CoA pile up inside nerve cells, forcing schwann cells and oligodendrocytes to synthesize abnormal branched-chain and odd-chain fatty acids that get inserted into nerve membranes, making the spinal cord myelin brittle and structurally unstable.
2. Why Standard Hospital Serum B12 Blood Tests Are Falsely Normal (And What to Order Instead)¶
This is the single most important clinical fact to share with your physician: a normal serum Vitamin B12 level (> 200 to 900 pg/mL or > 148 pmol/L) DOES NOT RULE OUT nitrous-oxide spinal cord toxicity.
- Why the Test Lies: Standard hospital laboratory tests measure total serum cobalamin by stripping B12 off its binding proteins and measuring the outer corrin ring via chemiluminescence. The machine cannot distinguish between active reduced
Co+B12 and dead, nitrous-oxidizedCo3+B12 circulating in the blood before renal clearance (or if the patient recently swallowed an energy drink or oral B12 pill). - The Gold-Standard Functional Biomarker Panel:
| Diagnostic Test | Result in Nitrous Oxide Neurological Toxicity | Clinical Reliability & Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Total Serum Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) | Low (< 200 pg/mL) in only 50% to 70%; Falsely NORMAL in 30% to 50% of paralyzed patients |
UNRELIABLE ALONE. Never withhold intramuscular B12 treatment because Total Serum B12 is normal. |
Serum Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) |
Markedly Elevated (> 0.40 umol/L or > 400 nmol/L, often 1,000 to 10,000+ nmol/L) |
GOLD STANDARD (> 95% sensitive) for intracellular mitochondrial B12 inactivation. |
Plasma Total Homocysteine (tHcy) |
Markedly Elevated (> 15 umol/L, frequently 50 to 150+ umol/L) |
GOLD STANDARD (> 98% sensitive) for cytoplasmic methionine synthase blockade AND indicates high risk for DVT / Pulmonary Embolism / Brain Clot. |
| Cervical & Thoracic Spine MRI (T2-Weighted) | Symmetrical T2 hyperintensity in the posterior (dorsal) columns from C2 to T6, forming the classic "Inverted V Sign" (or "Rabbit Ears" / "Binocular Sign") on axial slices | Confirms Subacute Combined Degeneration (SCD) of the fasciculus gracilis and fasciculus cuneatus (Note: early SCD can have a normal MRI in 20% to 30% of cases; treat clinically). |
Complete Blood Count (CBC) & Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) |
Frequently normal hemoglobin and normal MCV in acute/subacute \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) neurotoxicity (macrocytic anemia MCV > 100 fL develops late because red blood cells live 120 days) |
Absence of anemia or macrocytosis does NOT rule out severe B12 neurological injury. |
Part 2: Recognizing the Progression of Subacute Combined Degeneration (SCD)¶
Nitrous-oxide-induced nervous system damage combines dorsal column myelopathy (loss of position and vibration sense), lateral corticospinal tract myelopathy (spastic weakness), and sensorimotor peripheral axonal neuropathy. Without immediate cessation of \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) and intramuscular B12 replacement, patients progress rapidly through four clinical stages:
1. Stage-by-Stage Neurological Symptom Progression¶
- Stage 1: Distal Paresthesias ("The Warning Tingling"):
- Symmetrical numbness, tingling, or "pins and needles" starting in the tips of the toes and balls of the feet, ascending up the ankles and shins and appearing in the fingertips (stocking-and-glove distribution). Users drop objects or struggle to button shirts or type on a phone.
- Stage 2: Dorsal Column Proprioceptive Loss, Romberg Sign, and Lhermitte's Sign:
- Because the dorsal columns (fasciculus gracilis and cuneatus) carry joint-position sense (proprioception) and vibration sense to the brain, the person no longer knows where their feet are in space without looking directly down at the floor.
- Positive Romberg Sign: They can stand while looking at the wall, but the moment they close their eyes (or walk into a dark bedroom or shower), they sway violently and fall over (sensory ataxia).
- Lhermitte's Sign: Bending the chin forward toward the chest sends a sudden, terrifying "electric shock" or buzzing current shooting down the spine into both legs.
- Stage 3: Motor Weakness, Bilateral Foot Drop, and Wheelchair Paralysis:
- Demyelination spreads laterally into the corticospinal tracts and distally down motor axons, causing bilateral foot drop (toes drag on the floor, requiring a high-stepping "steppage gait"), severe leg weakness, spasticity, brisk knee reflexes with absent ankle reflexes (the classic combined upper-and-lower motor neuron paradox), and extensor plantar responses (positive Babinski sign). Within days, the person cannot stand unassisted.
- Stage 4: Autonomic Bladder/Bowel Paralysis, Optic Atrophy, and Megaloblastic Psychosis:
- Neurogenic urinary retention or overflow incontinence, fecal incontinence, erectile dysfunction, progressive blurring of central vision (B12 optic neuropathy), severe depression, memory loss, or acute paranoid psychosis ("megaloblastic madness").
2. Evidence-Based Hospital & Outpatient B12 Repletion Protocol (Association of British Neurologists & Toxicology Consensus)¶
Because oral Vitamin B12 tablets (cyanocobalamin) have poor passive absorption (-1%) and require hepatic conversion that is impaired during acute toxicity, clinical guidelines from the Association of British Neurologists (ABN) and UK TOXBASE mandate immediate intramuscular (IM) Hydroxocobalamin:
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| GOLD-STANDARD CLINICAL TREATMENT FOR NITROUS OXIDE |
| NEUROTOXICITY (SUBACUTE COMBINED DEGENERATION) |
| |
| 1. COMPLETE CESSATION OF NITROUS OXIDE (MANDATORY): |
| Inhaling N2O even ONCE during treatment oxidizes and destroys |
| the injected Vitamin B12 inside your body within minutes. |
| |
| 2. INTRAMUSCULAR HYDROXOCOBALAMIN (OR METHYLCOBALAMIN) PROTOCOL: |
| - Standard ABN Regimen: 1,000 micrograms (1 mg) IM injection |
| EVERY OTHER DAY for at least 2 weeks (or 1,000 mcg IM DAILY |
| for 5 to 14 days in severe paralysis), followed by 1,000 mcg IM |
| weekly for 4 to 8 weeks, until neurological improvement plateaus. |
| - High-dose oral Methylcobalamin (2,000 mcg/day sublingual) may |
| be added ONLY as an adjunct after IM loading has begun. |
| |
| 3. ADJUNCTIVE ORAL METHIONINE (IF AVAILABLE): |
| Oral L-Methionine (1 gram three times daily) directly supplies |
| the missing downstream product of blocked methionine synthase, |
| accelerating myelin repair while B12 regenerates apoenzymes. |
| |
| 4. CHECK FOLATE, IRON & POTASSIUM (NEVER GIVE FOLATE BEFORE B12): |
| Monitor serum potassium during the first 48 hours of B12 replacement|
| (rapid hematopoiesis can cause transient hypokalemia) and give |
| folic acid ONLY AFTER the first IM Hydroxocobalamin injection. |

Part 3: Cryogenic Frostbite Burns ("Whippet Thigh" & Airway Freezing) and Asphyxiation¶
The transition from 8-gram chargers to 580-gram, 640-gram, and 2,000-gram ("2-liter") steel cylinders has created an epidemic of severe cryogenic contact and inhalation burns.
1. Why 2-Liter Nitrous Tanks Drop to -55 to -88 Degrees Celsius (-67 to -126 Degrees Fahrenheit)¶
Inside a commercial nitrous tank, \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) exists as a compressed liquid in equilibrium with its vapor. As the user repeatedly fills balloons (or inhales from the nozzle), the boiling liquid absorbs massive latent heat of vaporization directly from the steel walls of the cylinder and the brass/plastic nozzle.
- "Whippet Thigh" (Deep Full-Thickness Inner-Thigh Cryogenic Frostbite):
- Users sitting on a couch or car seat routinely clamp the heavy
2,000-gramsteel cylinder between their bare or sweatpants-clad inner thighs to hold the tank steady while twisting the nozzle. - Why Users Do Not Feel Their Skin Freezing Solid: First, nitrous oxide is a potent dissociative analgesic (activating descending noradrenergic/opioid pain-blocking pathways and blocking NMDA glutamate receptors just like ketamine). Second, as the skin of the medial thigh drops below
-2 degrees Celsius (28 degrees Fahrenheit), cutaneous pain nerves are numbed by cold anesthesia. - By the time the session ends 15 to 45 minutes later, the steel tank is coated in white frost and is literally frozen to the skin of both inner thighs. Upon thawing, the skin develops bilateral, symmetrical necrotic eschars and massive hemorrhagic bullae extending deep into subcutaneous fat (3rd- and 4th-degree full-thickness frostbite).
- Emergency First Aid & Burn Center Warning: Gently warm the frozen thigh tissue using circulating warm water at
37 to 39 degrees Celsius (98.6 to 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit)for 20 to 30 minutes. Never rub or massage the frozen area (intracellular ice crystals shred cell membranes when rubbed) and never use a heating pad or hair dryer. Seek evaluation at a regional Burn Center within 24 to 48 hours; delaying care commonly leads to secondary Pseudomonas or Staphylococcus infection and sepsis requiring wide surgical debridement and split-thickness skin grafting.
- Users sitting on a couch or car seat routinely clamp the heavy
- Oral, Pharyngeal, and Laryngeal Frostbite + Barotrauma:
- Putting lips directly onto a tank nozzle or whipped-cream dispenser causes instant freezing of the lips, tongue, soft palate, and vocal cords, alongside risk of high-pressure gas dissecting into the mediastinum (pneumomediastinum). Any voice change, throat pain, neck swelling, or difficulty swallowing after tank use requires immediate Emergency Department airway evaluation.
2. Acute Asphyxiation ("Diffusion Hypoxia" & Enclosed-Space Suffocation)¶
While chronic B12 oxidation paralyzes the spinal cord, acute death from nitrous oxide is almost always caused by rapid hypoxic asphyxiation:
- Displacement of Alveolar Oxygen: Inhaling 100 percent nitrous oxide back-to-back without taking full breaths of room air between inhalations flushes oxygen out of the lungs, dropping arterial oxygen saturation (
SpO2) below 50 percent within 30 to 60 seconds, causing hypoxic seizures, arrhythmias, and brain death. - Concentration Effect & Diffusion Hypoxia (Fink Effect): Because \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) is 34 times more soluble in blood than nitrogen, when inhalation stops, huge volumes of dissolved \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) rush out of the pulmonary capillaries back into the lung alveoli all at once, diluting alveolar oxygen and washing out carbon dioxide (
CO2, which shuts off the brainstem's drive to breathe). - Never Inhale Inside a Car, Closet, or With a Bag/Mask Strapped to the Face: Opening or leaking a 2,000-gram cylinder inside a closed sedan fills the vehicle cabin with dense, asphyxiating \(\text{N}_2\text{O}\) gas (which is
1.5 times heavier than air), suffocating everyone inside while they pass out.
Warning
Red-Flag Symptoms of a Nitrous-Oxide Homocysteine Blood Clot (DVT, PE, or Brain Sinus Thrombosis). Because nitrous oxide spikes blood homocysteine (tHcy) to extreme prothrombotic levels, call 911 / 112 / 999 immediately if any heavy nitrous user develops:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Swelling, redness, warmth, or cramping pain in one calf or thigh.
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE): Sudden unexplained shortness of breath, sharp pleuritic chest pain that worsens when taking a deep breath, coughing up blood, or a racing resting heart rate (> 100 bpm).
- Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST): A severe, worsening headache that worsens when lying flat or coughing, blurred or double vision, vomiting, focal weakness, or a seizure.

Consider completing an accredited first aid and CPR training course from the Red Cross, St John Ambulance, or a local emergency provider.)
Regional emergency numbers and agency protocols¶
When presenting to an Emergency Department for nitrous oxide neurological or frostbite symptoms, state clearly the size and number of tanks used per week (for example, "three 2,000-gram cylinders per week for 4 weeks") so physicians immediately order Methylmalonic Acid (MMA), Homocysteine (tHcy), and IM Hydroxocobalamin.

Frequently asked questions¶
Can I keep using nitrous oxide safely if I take Vitamin B12 pills or get B12 shots before or during a party?
**No. Taking Vitamin B12 while continuing to inhale nitrous oxide does NOT protect your spinal cord.** Because inhaled nitrous oxide diffuses throughout every tissue in your body and **chemically oxidizes the cobalt core of both your natural B12 and any supplemental B12 pills or injections you just took**, continuing to inhale $\text{N}_2\text{O}$ immediately destroys the supplement inside your bloodstream. Furthermore, oxidized B12 analogues (`cob[III]alamin`) may remain bound to cellular methionine synthase enzymes, blocking fresh B12 from working until you **completely stop inhaling nitrous oxide** and allow your cells to synthesize fresh apoenzyme.
If my legs are numb or I have foot drop from nitrous oxide, will the paralysis go away completely once I get Vitamin B12 injections?
**It depends entirely on how fast you stop nitrous oxide and start intramuscular B12 injections.** Clinical follow-up studies from UK and European neurology centers show that if treatment is started early (during the tingling and mild unsteadiness phase), **75 to 90 percent of patients recover full walking function over 2 to 6 months**. However, if nitrous oxide use continues after leg weakness, foot drop, or bladder symptoms appear, **up to 40 to 50 percent of patients are left with permanent residual neurological deficits** (chronic neuropathic foot pain, sensory ataxia in the dark, foot drop, or erectile/bladder dysfunction) because axonal death has followed myelin loss. **Every single day of delay matters.**
Why did my inner thighs turn black and blistered two days after holding a "Galaxy Gas" tank, even though it barely hurt at the time?
Holding a 580 g to 2,000 g steel nitrous oxide tank between your legs while discharging gas cools the steel cylinder wall to **`-40 to -55 degrees Celsius (-40 to -67 degrees Fahrenheit)`**. Because nitrous oxide is a powerful painkiller and freezing temperatures numb your skin nerves, your skin, fat, and superficial muscle freeze solid without causing sharp pain (**"whippet thigh"**). Over the next 24 to 72 hours, thawing triggers vascular thrombosis and tissue death, forming deep **third-degree full-thickness frostbite eschars**. Unlike a sunburn or minor scald, deep cryogenic tank burns rarely heal on their own without scarring or infection and **must be evaluated promptly at a specialized Burn Unit**.
Can nitrous oxide cause psychiatric symptoms like paranoia, hallucinations, or depression?
**Yes.** Because Vitamin B12 inactivation shuts down the synthesis of **S-adenosylmethionine (`SAM`)** and tetrahydrobiopterin, which are required to manufacture **serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine** in the brain (alongside direct NMDA glutamate antagonism), heavy nitrous oxide users frequently develop **acute neuropsychiatric toxicity ("megaloblastic psychosis")**. Symptoms include intense paranoid delusions, auditory and visual hallucinations, severe agitation, memory loss, emotional lability, and crashing suicidal depression. Fortunately, psychiatric symptoms respond dramatically to **complete cessation of $\text{N}_2\text{O}$ plus intramuscular Hydroxocobalamin injections**.
How do you safely dispose of an empty or partially full 2-liter nitrous oxide cylinder so it does not explode in trash compactors?
Pressurized 580 g to 2,000 g steel nitrous oxide cylinders **must NEVER be thrown into household trash bins or standard recycling bins** unless completely depressurized, because residual gas explodes violently inside garbage truck compactors and municipal incinerators, injuring sanitation workers. Take the cylinder outdoors to a well-ventilated area away from people, attach the plastic release nozzle, twist it open until **zero hissing sound remains and the tank is completely empty at atmospheric pressure**, unscrew the nozzle, and bring the empty steel cylinder to your municipal **Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) or scrap metal recycling drop-off facility**.
