False DMCA Copyright Strike Extortion on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok: Counter-Notification Defense¶
Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.
Waking up to see two or three sudden DMCA Copyright Strikes against your original YouTube videos, Instagram Reels, or TikTok posts, followed minutes later by an email or Discord/Telegram message from the "Claimant" demanding $500 to $5,000 in Bitcoin or USDT to retract the strikes before your entire channel is permanently terminated in 7 days, is one of the most stressful extortion emergencies a content creator, journalist, or ecommerce brand can face. These attackers abuse the automated "take-down first, verify later" machinery of Section 512© of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512) by filing perjured takedown notices under fake names or impersonated music studios, knowing that three unresolved copyright strikes trigger an automatic, account-wide ban.
Even worse, many creators walk straight into a second trap: when they rush to click "Submit Counter-Notification" inside YouTube Studio, Instagram, or TikTok to fight the false strike, they do not realize that federal DMCA law (17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3)(D)) legally forces the platform to forward a complete copy of your Counter-Notification, including your Full Legal Name, Physical Home Street Address, and Personal Phone Number, directly to the extortionist's email inbox, who then uses your home address for doxxing or physical police swatting.
If an extortionist is threatening your physical safety or threatening to swat your home address, call your local police or emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom; see emergency numbers) and review targeted online brigading, employer harassment calls, and swatting prevention. Cross-reference our sibling guides on non-consensual intimate imagery and emergency DMCA takedowns, online harassment, doxxing, and cyberbullying, and creator channel hijacked by crypto scam livestreams as you execute this anti-extortion and safe Counter-Notification defense.
Do this now¶
- DO NOT PAY THE RANSOM, and do NOT reply angrily to the extortionist's email or Telegram message. Paying Bitcoin or PayPal to a copyright extortionist never ends the attack: over
80 percentof creators who pay the first$500demand are immediately hit with a second demand for$2,000(or the scammer disappears without retracting the strikes because they registered the claimant email on a burner domain they already abandoned). Instead, take full-screen, uncropped screenshots showing the extortionist's exact email headers (Show Original/.emlfile), Telegram/Discord handle, Bitcoin wallet address, and the exact YouTube/Instagram Video IDs they threatened. - NEVER type your residential home street address or personal mobile phone number into a DMCA Counter-Notification form when fighting a malicious troll or extortionist. By law, YouTube, Meta, and TikTok automatically email your Counter-Notification verbatim to the claimant. Always set up a Registered Agent / Copyright Agent / Legal Counsel / Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (
CMRAstreet address) and a dedicated VoIP phone number (Google Voice) BEFORE submitting your Counter-Notification (see the Privacy-Shielded Counter-Notice Protocol in Part 2 below). - If you received 3 Copyright Strikes on YouTube and see the red banner
"Your account is scheduled for termination in 7 days", do NOT panic-delete the struck videos. Deleting a video that has an active Copyright Strike does NOT remove the strike; instead, deleting the video permanently destroys your ability to submit a Counter-Notification through YouTube Studio and makes it much harder for YouTube's Copyright Abuse Team to inspect the false claim. Leave the struck videos untouched in your dashboard. - Understand how the "7-Day Courtesy Period" on YouTube works when you have 3 strikes: As long as you submit a valid DMCA Counter-Notification BEFORE the 7-day countdown expires, YouTube pauses and suspends the channel termination while the 10-to-14-business-day statutory counter-notice clock runs. Your channel will not be deleted at Day 7 if a valid Counter-Notification is pending.
- Escalate the extortion screenshots directly to the platform's "Abusive / Fraudulent Copyright Claimant" team IN PARALLEL with your Counter-Notification. While a standard Counter-Notification takes 10 to 14 business days by statute, sending proof of financial extortion (
"Pay us $1,000 or we strike your channel") to@TeamYouTube/ YouTube Creator Support (copyright@youtube.com), Meta IP Abuse, or TikTok Legal allows internal Trust & Safety engineers to summarily void the fraudulent strikes in 24 to 48 hours and terminate the scammer's claimant account under17 U.S.C. § 512(f). - Never file a DMCA Counter-Notification if you actually used unlicensed commercial music, movie clips, or third-party footage that does NOT qualify as Fair Use. Filing a Counter-Notification is a sworn federal legal document signed under penalty of perjury in which you consent to be sued in Federal District Court. If the claimant is a real record label (UMG, Sony, Warner), movie studio, or photographer whose work you genuinely used without a license, a Counter-Notification invites an actual federal copyright lawsuit; use the Retraction Request path instead.
Danger
The DMCA Counter-Notice Doxxing Trap (17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3)(D)). Stalkers, rival businesses, and swatting extortionists frequently file a bogus DMCA takedown strike against a creator's video, Instagram photo, or Twitch VOD solely as a legal trick to force the creator to reveal their real legal name and home address. Because the DMCA requires a counter-notice to include the subscriber's "name, address, and telephone number" and requires the service provider to "promptly provide the person who provided the notification with a copy of the counter notification," typing your apartment address into YouTube or Instagram hands your physical location straight to your stalker. Always use an attorney, an LLC registered agent, or a commercial street-address mailbox (PMB) and a VoIP number on any counter-notice involving a hostile individual.

Part 1: How the "3-Strike DMCA Extortion" scam works (And why scammers always lose at Day 14)¶
Understanding the exact legal mechanics of 17 U.S.C. § 512 removes 90 percent of the fear that extortionists rely on to make you pay:
1. The asymmetry between a Takedown Notice (512(c)) and a Counter-Notification (512(g))¶
- Why it is so easy for a scammer to give you a Strike (
17 U.S.C. § 512(c)):- To keep its "Safe Harbor" immunity from billion-dollar copyright lawsuits, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or Twitch is legally required to act "expeditiously to remove, or disable access to" any video as soon as someone submits a form containing the six statutory elements of a DMCA takedown notice.
- Scammers abuse this by downloading one of your own videos, re-uploading it to an obscure website or burner channel with a backdated timestamp (or inventing a fake company name like "Global Digital Media Rights LLC"), and submitting three takedown notices at 2:00 AM on a Friday so your channel gets hit with a 7-day termination countdown.
- Why the scammer's power evaporates the moment you file a Counter-Notification (
17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(2)(C)):- Under federal law, once you submit a valid Counter-Notification, the platform sends it to the claimant and starts a strict statutory countdown of 10 to 14 business days.
- During those 10 to 14 business days, the claimant cannot just send an email saying they still disagree. To keep your video down after a Counter-Notification, the claimant is legally required to hire a U.S. federal litigation attorney, pay a
$405U.S. Federal District Court filing fee, file a real federal copyright infringement lawsuit against you in a U.S. Federal District Court (or the Copyright Claims BoardCCB), and serve official stamped federal court complaint papers on the platform. - An anonymous Bitcoin extortionist in Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia, or an internet troll who does not own a U.S. Copyright Office registration (
17 U.S.C. § 411(a), which is a mandatory prerequisite enforced by the U.S. Supreme Court in Fourth Estate v. Wall-Street.com before anyone can file a U.S. copyright lawsuit), CANNOT file a federal lawsuit. When Day 14 arrives with zero court lawsuit filed, the platform is legally required by512(g)to restore your video and clear the strike.
Comparison: Content ID Claim vs. DMCA Copyright Strike vs. Extortion Strike¶
| Feature | YouTube Content ID Claim (Automated Match) |
Legitimate DMCA Takedown Strike (17 U.S.C. 512(c)) |
Fraudulent DMCA Extortion / Troll Strike |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does It Count Toward the "3 Strikes = Channel Deleted" Rule? | NO (0 Strikes): Content ID is an automated audio/video fingerprint match that routes ad revenue to the music/video owner or blocks viewing in some countries |
YES (1 Strike per notice): 3 strikes trigger a 7-day channel termination countdown |
YES (1 Strike per notice): Scammers intentionally file 3 separate notices at once to trigger the 7-day termination banner |
| Is Your Video Taken Down? | Usually No (stays live with ads shared/monetized by rightsholder) | Yes (Video immediately removed and replaced with "Video unavailable due to a copyright claim by [Name]") | Yes (Removed immediately until disputed/countered) |
| Does Disputing It Reveal Your Home Address? | No: An initial Content ID Dispute inside YouTube Studio does not require your physical street address | Yes: A formal DMCA Counter-Notification legally transmits your name, address, and phone number to the claimant | YES (EXTREME DOXXING RISK): You must use a privacy-shielded Registered Agent / Attorney / CMRA address on the Counter-Notice |
| Correct Response Protocol | Use Trim Out Segment, Erase Song (AI Audio Remover), or click Dispute if you hold a license | Do NOT file a Counter-Notice if you used their work without permission; wait 90 days (complete Copyright School) or politely request a Retraction | 1. Report Extortion proof to Platform Abuse Team 2. File a Privacy-Shielded 512(g) Counter-Notice before Day 7 |
Part 2: How to file a 17 U.S.C. § 512(g) Counter-Notification WITHOUT doxxing your home address¶
If a false DMCA strike was filed by an extortionist, stalker, competitor, or internet troll, never put your home street address or personal cell phone number into the Counter-Notification form.
Here are the three completely legal, platform-accepted ways to satisfy the statutory requirements of 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3) while keeping your home address 100 percent confidential:
- Option 1 (Best for Creators & Streamers): Form a Privacy LLC with a Commercial Registered Agent (
$35 to $100): Register a simple creator LLC (for example, in Wyoming, Delaware, or New Mexico via a Commercial Registered Agent service like Northwest Registered Agent) that assigns a real physical street suite address where the Registered Agent is legally authorized to accept "Service of Process" on your behalf. Because the purpose of the address in17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3)(D)is specifically to accept legal service of process, listing your Registered Agent's street address plus a Google Voice number satisfies the statute without exposing where you sleep. - Option 2 (Fastest 15-Minute Setup): Rent a Commercial Street Address Mailbox (
UPS Store/iPostal1/Anytime Mailbox): Unlike a USPS "P.O. Box" (which YouTube's automated form parser rejects), a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) like The UPS Store gives you a real physical commercial street address (such as"123 Main St, Suite 400-102, City, State ZIP"). Pair it with a free Google Voice or Burner phone number. - Option 3 (Maximum Anonymity): Retain an Internet / IP Attorney to File as Your Authorized Legal Representative: Both YouTube (
support.google.com/youtube/answer/2807684) and Meta explicitly allow an authorized attorney to submit a Counter-Notification on a client's behalf using the Law Firm's office address and phone number for service of process.
2. Platform-by-platform step-by-step Counter-Notification filing instructions¶
A. YouTube (YouTube Studio Web Form & Email Fallback)¶
- Sign into
studio.youtube.comon a desktop browser -> click Content on the left sidebar -> filter by Copyright (or click the Channel violations -> Active copyright strikes card on your Dashboard). - Hover over the "Copyright-protected content" strike and click See details -> Actions -> Submit counter notification.
- Enter your Privacy-Shielded Contact Information (Commercial Street Address / Registered Agent Address and VoIP phone number).
- Check the three mandatory legal boxes (perjury statement and federal court jurisdiction consent).
- In the "Explain why you believe the removal was a mistake (2,000 characters max)" box, write directly to the YOUTUBE HUMAN REVIEWER, not the claimant.
- Important Insider Rule: Before YouTube forwards your Counter-Notification to the claimant, a human YouTube Copyright Reviewer screens your explanation to make sure your claim is legally plausible. If you write an emotional rant ("This scammer is extorting me for Bitcoin") without explaining why you own the copyright to the video, the reviewer may reject your counter-notice as "Unclear copyright rights."
- Use this exact two-part template inside the YouTube Counter-Notification box:
1. STATEMENT OF ORIGINAL OWNERSHIP / RIGHTS: This video was removed in error and/or as a result of a fraudulent, bad-faith misrepresentation under 17 U.S.C. 512(f). I am the original creator and sole copyright owner of 100% of the visual footage, audio recording, script, and editing in this video, which was created and recorded by me on [Date] and first published on my channel on [Date]. The claimant does not own any copyright in this work and has no authorization to claim it. 2. NOTICE OF FRAUDULENT CLAIMANT / EXTORTION TO YOUTUBE REVIEW TEAM: Please note for internal YouTube Trust & Safety review that the claimant ([Claimant Name / Email]) is a bad-faith actor who has submitted fabricated takedown notices against my original content [and contacted me demanding cryptocurrency extortion to retract the strikes; see Abuse Ticket #XXXXX]. Under 17 U.S.C. 512(g), I swear under penalty of perjury that I have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
- What if your YouTube channel was ALREADY terminated by 3 strikes before you could log into YouTube Studio?
- Once a channel is terminated, you can no longer access
studio.youtube.com. You must submit a Free-Form DMCA Counter-Notification by Email directly tocopyright@youtube.com(from the email address associated with your YouTube channel) containing all four mandatory statutory elements of17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3):- The exact full URLs of each removed video (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXXXXXXXXXX; find the 11-character video IDs inside the strike notification emails YouTube sent you). - Your full legal name (or Authorized Legal Representative / LLC name), physical service-of-process address, phone number, and email address.
- Both mandatory statutory statements word-for-word:
- "I consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district in which my address is located, or if my address is outside of the United States, the judicial district in which YouTube is located, and will accept service of process from the claimant."
- "I swear, under penalty of perjury, that I have a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of a mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled."
- Your physical or electronic signature (
/s/ [Your Full Legal Name]).
- The exact full URLs of each removed video (
- Once a channel is terminated, you can no longer access
B. Instagram & Facebook (Meta IP Counter-Notice Flow)¶
- Open the email Meta sent you with the subject "Content removed: Intellectual property" (or check Settings -> Account Status -> Removed content inside the Instagram app) and copy the Report Number (
#1234567890...). - Click the Submit an appeal / DMCA Counter-Notification link inside that notice (or open
instagram.com/help/ip/-> How to appeal / Counter-Notice). - Select "I am filing a DMCA counter-notification", enter the Report Number, provide your privacy-shielded service-of-process address, paste the original-ownership explanation above, and sign electronically.
C. TikTok (TikTok Copyright Counter-Notification Form)¶
- Open the System Notification inside your TikTok Inbox (
Account Updates -> Copyright removal notice) or open the web form attiktok.com/legal/report/Copyright-> select Submit a Counter-Notification. - Upload side-by-side proof that you are the original creator (such as a screenshot of your timeline inside CapCut / Adobe Premiere / Final Cut Pro showing the raw project layers, or the original camera-roll
.movmetadata timestamp predating the scammer's claim).
Part 3: Defeating the "Fake Court Order PDF" trick at Day 10¶
When sophisticated copyright extortionists see that you stood your ground and filed a valid Counter-Notification, they sometimes try one final desperate bluff on Day 9 or Day 10 of the 14-day waiting period:
- They use Photoshop or a PDF editor to forge a fake "U.S. District Court Complaint" PDF with a fake case number (e.g., Case No. 1:26-cv-09999) and email it to copyright@youtube.com or TikTok Legal claiming they sued you.
Here is how to crush a forged court filing in 10 minutes:
1. If the platform forwards you a PDF claiming a federal lawsuit was filed (or if the extortionist emails you a "lawsuit PDF" to scare you), look at the Court Name and Case Number at the top of the document.
2. Every genuine federal lawsuit filed in any U.S. District Court (or the U.S. Copyright Claims Board dockets.ccb.gov) is immediately indexed on the U.S. Government's public PACER (pacer.uscourts.gov) and CourtListener (courtlistener.com/recap) databases.
3. Under Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corp. v. Wall-Street.com, LLC, 586 U.S. ___ (2019), no plaintiff can file a federal copyright infringement complaint in a U.S. District Court without pleading an issued U.S. Copyright Office Registration Number (TX... / PA... / VA...), which you can verify in 30 seconds for free on the U.S. Copyright Office Public Catalog (cocatalog.loc.gov).
4. Reply immediately to copyright@youtube.com (and @TeamYouTube on X):
"URGENT FRAUD ALERT: The document submitted by the claimant is a forged federal court pleading (a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 505, Forgery of Seals of Courts). A search of the official U.S. Courts PACER database confirms that Case No. [X] does not exist (or belongs to an unrelated case from 2018), and the U.S. Copyright Office Public Catalog (
cocatalog.loc.gov) confirms the claimant holds zero registered copyrights. Please verify this docket via PACER, reject the forged submission, restore my content under 17 U.S.C. 512(g), and terminate the claimant for fraud."
Part 4: Proactive creator defenses against copyright extortion (YouTube Copyright Match Tool)¶
Once your strikes are cleared and your channel is restored, put these four permanent shields in place:
- 1. Never Display Your Personal Gmail or Home Address in Your Channel "About" Page or WHOIS:
- Use a separate business inquiry email address (such as
contact@mychanneldomain.com) and make sure your website domain has WHOIS Privacy Protection turned ON at your registrar (Cloudflare, Namecheap, Porkbun).
- Use a separate business inquiry email address (such as
- 2. Enable and Monitor YouTube's Built-In
Copyright Match Tool(Studio -> Copyright):- Scammers frequently download your YouTube/TikTok videos, re-upload them to a hidden channel, and then strike your original video claiming you stole from them. Checking the Copyright Match Tool in YouTube Studio shows you who is re-uploading your videos so you can strike or archive their clones first.
- 3. Keep Unflattened Project Files (
.prproj,.drp,.psd, Camera RAWs) and Upload Unlisted Drafts:- Retaining your multi-track Adobe Premiere / DaVinci Resolve timeline and original camera files with embedded EXIF metadata gives you indisputable forensic proof of original authorship for TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube appeals.
- 4. Know Your Section 512(f) Counter-Lawsuit Rights (
17 U.S.C. § 512(f)):- Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), any person who knowingly materially misrepresents under the DMCA that material is infringing is legally liable for all damages, lost ad revenue, and your full attorneys' fees incurred as a result of the false takedown. In 2019, YouTube itself sued a serial DMCA extortionist (YouTube, LLC v. Brady, Case No. 8:19-cv-00353) who used three fake strikes to demand Bitcoin and swatted a creator, forcing a permanent federal injunction and accountability.
Tip
How to Freeze the 7-Day Termination Clock on YouTube When Only 1 of Your 3 Strikes Is False. Remember that YouTube only terminates a channel at 3 active strikes (1 or 2 strikes do not delete your channel). If you have 3 strikes and even one single strike out of the three is a fake/abusive strike, submitting a valid Counter-Notification on just that one false strike drops your non-pending strike count to 2 and stops the 7-day channel termination completely while the counter-notice is processed.
Regional emergency numbers and agency protocols¶
If a copyright extortionist threatens physical violence, swatting, or cyber-extortion, or if you need to report bad-faith intellectual property abuse to national authorities:
United States and Canada¶
- Emergency Police Dispatch & Anti-Swatting Registry: Call 911 for immediate threats. If a copyright extortionist discovers your address and threatens to "swat" your livestream, call your local city police 10-digit non-emergency dispatch line immediately to place a Pre-Emptive Swatting Warning Flag on your address (see targeted online brigading and swatting prevention).
- Federal Extortion & DMCA Abuse Legal Resources:
- FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (
ic3.gov): File a formal Cyber-Extortion report including the attacker's email headers, IP addresses (if visible in headers), and Bitcoin/USDT wallet addresses. - U.S. Copyright Office / Copyright Claims Board (
ccb.gov): Established under the CASE Act of 2020, the Copyright Claims Board (CCB) allows creators to bring a streamlined, low-cost claim for bad-faith17 U.S.C. § 512(f)false DMCA takedown misrepresentations without hiring an expensive federal district court trial team. - Electronic Frontier Foundation (
EFF,eff.org) & Lumen Database (lumendatabase.org): Contact EFF's intake (info@eff.org) for high-profile abusive DMCA censorship cases. - Canada: Report cyber-extortion to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (
CAFC) and note that Canada's Copyright Act (Notice and Noticeregime, Sections 41.25-41.27) normally forwards notices rather than mandating instant takedowns on Canadian-hosted platforms, though US-headquartered platforms (YouTube, Meta) apply the US DMCA globally.
- FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (
United Kingdom¶
- Emergency Police Dispatch: Call 999 (or 101 for non-emergency police swatting flags).
- Cyber-Extortion & Unjustified Threats Law: Report online blackmail and extortion to Action Fraud (
actionfraud.police.uk). Note that under UK law (Intellectual Property (Unjustified Threats) Act 2017 and the CDPA 1988), making groundless, bad-faith threats of intellectual property infringement proceedings to extort money or shut down a competitor's commercial channel is actionable in UK courts.
European Union¶
- Pan-European Emergency Number: Call 112.
- EU Digital Services Act (
DSA, Regulation2022/2065) Article 20 & Article 21 Protections: Creators located in the European Union have powerful additional legal rights beyond the US DMCA:- Under DSA Article 17 & Article 20, Very Large Online Platforms (
VLOPsincluding YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok) must provide an impartial internal complaint-handling system to reverse wrongful content removals. - Under DSA Article 21, if a platform fails to restore wrongfully removed content, EU creators can escalate the dispute to a certified Out-of-Court Dispute Settlement Body (whose fees are paid by the platform if the creator prevails).
- Under DSA Article 23, platforms are legally required to suspend users/claimants who frequently submit manifestly unfounded takedown notices.
- Under DSA Article 17 & Article 20, Very Large Online Platforms (
Australia and New Zealand¶
- Emergency Dispatch: Call 000 in Australia or 111 in New Zealand.
- Cybercrime & Extortion Reporting: Report online extortion via
cyber.gov.au(ReportCyber) in Australia or CERT NZ (cert.govt.nz) / Netsafe (0508 NETSAFE) in New Zealand.
India and Asia-Pacific¶
- India: Call 1930 or file an online cyber-extortion complaint at
cybercrime.gov.in. Under Section 52(1)© of the Indian Copyright Act, 1957 and Rule 75 of the Copyright Rules, 2013, a transient electronic storage provider removes content for up to 21 days upon a takedown notice, and must restore the content after 21 days unless the claimant produces an actual judicial court order restraining the creator. - Singapore & Japan: In Singapore, report extortion to the Singapore Police Force (
police.gov.sg). In Japan, consult the Provider Liability Limitation Act (PLLA) helpline or Prefectural Police Cybercrime Desk (#9110).
Frequently asked questions¶
If I delete the video that got a false Copyright Strike, will the strike go away so my channel doesn't get terminated?¶
No, **never delete a video that has an active Copyright Strike**. Deleting the video does NOT remove the strike from your account (the strike remains on your channel for the full 90 days and still counts toward the 3-strike termination threshold). Worse yet, once you delete the video from YouTube Studio, you permanently lose the ability to click "Submit Counter-Notification" on that video in your dashboard, and YouTube's internal abuse reviewers can no longer view the video to verify that the claim against you was fraudulent. Always leave the struck video in your dashboard until the Counter-Notification resolves.
Will my YouTube channel still be deleted in 7 days if I have 3 Copyright Strikes and I submit a Counter-Notification today?¶
No. When a YouTube channel reaches 3 Copyright Strikes, YouTube grants a **7-day courtesy period** before permanent channel termination. As explicitly stated in YouTube's official Copyright Strike Basics policy, **if you submit a valid DMCA Counter-Notification before that 7-day countdown expires, your channel will NOT be terminated while the Counter-Notification is pending forwarding and awaiting the 10-to-14-business-day statutory resolution**. Even if only one of your three strikes has a pending Counter-Notification, your active uncontested strike count drops below 3 and your channel remains safe from termination.
Why did YouTube reject my DMCA Counter-Notification and say "We couldn't find a valid reason to forward your request"?¶
Over 70 percent of rejected Counter-Notifications fail because the creator used the explanation box only to complain about the claimant (*"This person is a scammer who hates my channel"*) without clearly stating **why the creator legally owns the copyright (or holds a valid license/Fair Use right) to every audio and visual element inside the video**. Remember that a human YouTube Copyright Reviewer reads your text first to screen out abusive forms. Always start your explanation with a clear, factual declaration: *"I am the original creator and sole copyright owner of 100% of the visual footage and audio in this video, which I filmed and edited myself on [Date]"* before mentioning that the claimant is a bad-faith extortionist.
How can I avoid giving a stalker or extortionist my home address when the DMCA Counter-Notice form requires a physical street address?¶
Never enter your residential house or apartment address into a Counter-Notification against a malicious claimant, because `17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3)(D)` legally requires the platform to email your full Counter-Notification (including the address and phone number you typed) directly to the claimant. Instead, before filing the form, either: (1) rent a commercial street-address mailbox at a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) such as The UPS Store, iPostal1, or Anytime Mailbox (which provides a real street address and suite number, unlike a USPS P.O. Box), (2) form a simple creator LLC with a Commercial Registered Agent whose office address is legally authorized to accept service of process, or (3) hire an internet/IP attorney to file the Counter-Notification using their law firm's office address.
What if the scammer emails me a link to a "DMCA Retraction Form" or a .zip file containing "proof of their copyright claim"?¶
Never click links or download `.zip`, `.rar`, `.pdf.exe`, or `.scr` attachments sent by someone claiming you violated their copyright. One of the most common ways hackers steal YouTube and Instagram accounts (see our guide on creator channels hijacked by crypto scam livestreams) is sending a fake email or DM saying *"Your video infringes our copyright; download our legal evidence archive (`Copyright_Evidence_2026.zip`, password `1234`) within 24 hours or we will strike your channel."* That archive contains `Lumma` or `RedLine` infostealer malware that steals your browser session cookies the second you open it. Only view and respond to copyright claims directly inside your official YouTube Studio (`studio.youtube.com`), Instagram Account Status, or TikTok system inbox.
