Lost or stolen wallet: freezing cards and replacing IDs

Hätänumerot vaihtelevat maittain. Tämä sivu käyttää numeroa 911, joka on Yhdysvaltojen ja Kanadan numero. Monet muut maat käyttävät numeroa 112, 999 tai jotain muuta numeroa. Etsi maasi numero.

Realizing your wallet or purse is gone triggers an immediate wave of panic. Modern thieves rarely wait hours to test stolen credit and debit cards; organized pickpockets and opportunistic thieves immediately walk to the nearest self-checkout kiosk, transit ticket machine, or electronics store to make rapid contactless ("tap-to-pay") purchases before you realize the wallet is missing. At the same time, a stolen driver's license or national identity card gives identity thieves your full legal name, date of birth, home address, and signature.

Do not spend an hour retracing your steps before securing your money. By locking your cards inside your mobile banking apps during the first 5 minutes, you cut off financial theft immediately while still giving yourself time to check whether the wallet slipped between your car seats.

Tee tämä nyt

  1. Lock every debit and credit card instantly in your mobile banking apps. Before calling anyone or searching a parking lot, open your banking apps on your smartphone and toggle Lock Card or Freeze Card on every debit and credit card that was in your wallet.
  2. Spend no more than 10 minutes checking your immediate surroundings. Check your coat pockets, bag compartments, under your car seats, and call the exact restaurant or store you just left. If it is not found within 10 minutes, treat the wallet as permanently stolen.
  3. Call your bank and card issuers to permanently cancel and reissue the cards. Locking a card in an app is temporary. Call your bank's fraud department to report the cards lost or stolen so they cancel the compromised 16-digit card numbers, disable physical tap-to-pay tokens, and mail replacement cards with new numbers.
  4. Prioritize your debit card first. Under banking laws in many countries (such as the Electronic Fund Transfer Act in the United States), your personal liability for unauthorized debit card withdrawals rises sharply if you wait more than 48 hours to report the loss, and stolen debit funds drain directly from your checking account.
  5. Place a free security freeze and fraud alert on your credit files. Contact the major credit reporting bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) so nobody can use your stolen driver's license to open new credit cards, cell phone plans, or personal loans in your name.
  6. Change your home locks if your keys were lost alongside an ID showing your address. If your house keys were attached to your wallet or inside the same stolen purse as your driver's license, assume a thief knows where you live and has the key to your front door.

The first 30 minutes: stopping financial drain

When a wallet is stolen, the greatest immediate risk comes from contactless (NFC tap-to-pay) transactions and non-PIN point-of-sale purchases. Even if a thief does not know your 4-digit debit PIN, they can often tap your debit or credit card for transactions under local contactless limits or run a debit card as "credit" at self-service gas pumps and retail kiosks.

Locking versus canceling a card

  • Temporary App Lock (Do at Minute 1): Almost all major banks allow you to freeze a card with a single tap in their mobile app. This blocks new in-store swipes and taps while you search your home or car.
  • Permanent Cancellation and Reissue (Do at Minute 15): If the wallet is not in your immediate possession, call the bank's 24/7 lost/stolen card line. Ask the representative to:
  • Permanently close the old card number and issue a replacement card with a new 16-digit number, expiration date, and CVV code.
  • Review all pending transactions from the last 24 hours with you on the phone and flag any unrecognized charges as fraud immediately.
  • Opt out of automatic billing updater services (Visa Account Updater / Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater) temporarily if fraud has already occurred: If a thief immediately added your stolen card to a digital subscription or merchant wallet, ask your issuer to clear any newly tokenized digital wallet links while keeping your legitimate mobile wallet updated.

Danger

Why you must report a stolen debit card within 48 hours: In the United States under Regulation E (the Electronic Fund Transfer Act), if you report a physical debit/ATM card missing before any unauthorized charges occur, your liability is $0. If you report it within 2 business days of learning of the loss, your maximum liability is $50. If you wait more than 2 business days, your legal liability can jump to $500, and waiting more than 60 days after a statement is sent can leave you liable for 100 percent of stolen checking funds.

Freezing your credit and preventing identity theft

A stolen driver's license, state ID, military ID, or national identity card cannot be "canceled" the way a credit card can; the thief still holds a government photo document bearing your legal name, address, date of birth, and driver's license number. Criminals use stolen physical IDs to impersonate victims inside bank branches, apply for instant retail store credit, buy smartphones on installment plans, or rent vehicles and equipment they never return.

A Credit Freeze (Security Freeze) locks your credit file so lenders cannot pull your credit report to approve a new loan or credit card unless you temporarily lift the freeze with your account login or PIN. Placing and lifting a credit freeze is 100 percent free and does not lower your credit score.

  • In the United States: Contact all three nationwide bureaus online or by phone to place a Security Freeze, and ask the first bureau you contact to place an Initial Fraud Alert (when you place a fraud alert with one bureau, they are legally required to notify the other two automatically):
  • Equifax: equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services or 1-888-298-0045
  • Experian: experian.com/freeze or 1-888-397-3742
  • Unioni: transunion.com/credit-freeze or 1-888-909-8872
  • ChexSystems (for checking accounts): Also place a security freeze at chexsystems.com (1-800-428-9623), jotta varas ei voi käyttää varastettua henkilötodistustasi ja väärennettyä shekkiä avatakseen petollisia pankkitilejä sinun nimissäsi.
  • In Canada: Contact both Equifax Canada (1-800-465-7166) and TransUnion Canada (1-800-663-9980) to place a fraud alert (or a security freeze for residents of provinces with statutory freeze mandates, such as Quebec and Ontario).
  • In the United Kingdom: Register with Cifas (cifas.org.uk) for Protective Registration, which places a national fraud warning flag across UK banking and credit databases (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion UK).
  • In Australia: Contact Equifax Australia, Experian Australia, and illion to request an immediate free Credit Ban on your credit file.

Filing a police report and getting an incident number

Unless you were physically mugged or assaulted (in which case you should call 911, 112, or 999 or check hätänumerot and follow our robbery and mugging guide), call the non-emergency telephone line of the local police department in the city or jurisdiction where the wallet was lost or stolen, or use their online police reporting portal.

Why a police report number matters: 1. Motor vehicle departments (DMV / DVLA / ServiceOntario) often waive replacement ID fees or flag your old driver's license number against traffic ticket impersonation when you provide a police report number. 2. Credit bureaus require an official police report or government Identity Theft Report to upgrade a 1-year Initial Fraud Alert to an Extended 7-Year Fraud Alert. 3. Credit card purchase protection, homeowners/renters insurance, and travel insurance require a police report number within 24 to 48 hours to reimburse stolen cash, prescription glasses, or handbags.

Write down the exact Police Incident / Report Number, the name and badge number of the officer or clerk, and the date filed.

Step-by-step replacement priority checklist

Use the table below to systematically replace everything that was inside your wallet without overlooking hidden vulnerabilities.

Item in wallet Priority Action to take immediately Why it cannot wait
Debit / ATM cards and Credit cards 1 (Immediate) Lock in app immediately; call bank to cancel card numbers and mail replacements; update legitimate recurring bills Stops immediate tap-to-pay drains and protects you under zero-liability and statutory fraud time limits
House, apartment, or car keys (if lost with ID) 1 (Immediate) Have a family member guard the home and call a locksmith to rekey the cylinders or deactivate electronic key fobs Your driver's license gives a thief your exact street address alongside the key to unlock your front door
Driver's license / State or National ID 2 (sama päivä) Apply online or in person at your DMV / licensing agency; request a duplicate or stolen-ID flag on the old serial number Needed to board flights, pick up prescriptions, verify identity at banks, and drive legally
Employer / Campus ID badge and keycards 2 (sama päivä) Call your workplace security desk or university campus card office immediately to deactivate the RFID badge Prevents an unauthorized intruder from badging into your office building, school dormitory, or laboratory
Health insurance card / Medicare / NHS / EHIC card 3 (24-48 tunnin sisällä) Soita Jäsenpalveluihin tai kirjaudu sisään vakuutusyhtiösi portaaliin mitätöidäksesi vanhan jäsenkortin ja tulostaaksesi väliaikainen digitaalinen kortti Lääketieteellinen identiteettivarkaus tapahtuu, kun joku käyttää sairausvakuutuskorttiasi ensiapuun, leikkaukseen tai reseptilääkkeisiin

Warning

  2. Hanki hätäkäteistä paikallisesta pankin konttorista tai korttittomasta pankkiautomaatista: Jopa ilman fyysistä debit-korttia tai ajokorttia, voit usein nostaa käteistä pankkisi pankkiautomaatista käyttämällä kertaluonteista korttittoman pankkiautomaatin käyttökoodia, joka on luotu pankkisi mobiilisovelluksessa. Vaihtoehtoisesti voit vierailla pankkisi fyysisessä konttorissa toissijaisen henkilötodistuksen (kuten passin, vanhentuneen toimiluvan, syntymätodistuksen, sähkölaskun ja sisäänkirjautuneen mobiilipankkisovelluksen) avulla nostaaksesi hätäkäteistä kassalta.
  3. Matka- ja kotimaanlennot ilman fyysistä henkilötodistusta: Jos matkustat poissa kotoa, kun lompakkosi varastetaan, katso täydellinen opas osoitteessa kadonnut passi tai matkustusasiakirja. Yhdysvaltain sisäisillä lennoilla Transportation Security Administration (TSA) sallii matkustajien, joiden henkilöllisyystodistus on kadonnut tai varastettu, lentää ilman fyysistä ajokorttia, jos saavut lentokentälle vähintään 2 tuntia etuajassa, ilmoita asiasta TSA:n virkailijalle korokkeella ja suorita henkilöllisyyden todentamishaastattelu käyttämällä toissijaisia asiakirjoja (reseptipulloja, joissa on nimesi, työkortit tai luottotiedot).

Lompakon minimalismi: mitä poistaa jokapäiväisestä lompakosta ikuisesti

Kun olet toipunut kadonneesta lompakon hätätilanteesta, tyhjennä korvaava lompakkosi, jotta tulevan menetyksen korjaaminen kestää 10 minuuttia 10 tunnin sijaan:

  • Never carry your Social Security card (US), Social Insurance Number card (Canada), or birth certificate. Memorize the number and lock the physical card in a fireproof home safe.
  • Never carry your passport book or passport card for everyday local errands unless you are crossing an international border or need it as your sole primary ID.
  • Never write PINs or passwords on slips of paper tucked inside wallet slots.
  • Keep one backup credit card and $50 to $100 in emergency cash at home (or locked in your hotel room safe when traveling) completely separate from your main wallet so you are never left without a way to pay for food or transit.
  • Photocopy or photograph the front and back of the 3 to 4 cards you actually carry and store the list of issuer phone numbers inside an encrypted password manager (never in an unencrypted photo album) so you know exactly which numbers to call.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What should I do if someone returns my lost wallet a day later with all my cards still inside?

Even if a Good Samaritan hands back your wallet with every credit and debit card still in its slot, you must still permanently cancel and replace all payment cards with new card numbers. It takes less than 15 seconds for someone to photograph the front and back of your cards (capturing the 16-digit number, expiration date, and 3-digit CVV security code) and return the physical wallet so you lower your guard before they spend your money online weeks later.

Will cancelling my lost credit card hurt my credit score?

No, reporting a credit card lost or stolen does not close your underlying line of credit and does not hurt your credit score or reset the age of your account. Your bank simply deactivates the compromised 16-digit plastic card number and transfers your existing balance, payment history, and credit limit directly onto a new card number.

Can someone steal my identity with just my driver's license?

A stolen driver's license alone does not contain your Social Security number or bank passwords, but it gives an impersonator your full legal name, date of birth, home address, physical description, signature, and driver's license number. Combined with leaked data from past corporate data breaches, a physical driver's license is enough for criminals to attempt bank branch impersonation, SIM-swap attacks at mobile carrier stores, or fraudulent loan applications unless you freeze your credit bureaus.

How do I stop someone from using my stolen health insurance card?

Call the Member Services phone number of your health insurance provider (or Medicare / national health service) immediately to report your card stolen and ask them to issue a new member ID suffix or flag your account for photo ID verification at clinics. Check your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements over the next 6 months to verify that no unfamiliar doctor visits, prescriptions, or durable medical equipment claims were billed under your name.
