Kejiret ing wildfire nalika hiking utawa backpacking¶
Nomer darurat beda-beda miturut negara. Kaca iki nggunakake 911, nomer kanggo Amerika Serikat lan Kanada. Akeh negara liya nggunakake 112, 999, utawa nomer liyane. Temokake nomer kanggo negara sampeyan.
Spotting a towering pyrocumulus smoke plume, smelling burning pine needles, or hearing the freight-train roar of a crown fire advancing up a canyon while you are miles from the trailhead is a life-or-death backcountry emergency. Wildfires driven by canyon winds and steep topography routinely travel at 10 to 25 kilometers per hour (6 to 15 miles per hour) through forest and up to 35 kilometers per hour (22 miles per hour) across dry grass, far faster than any human can run with or without a pack. Most hiker fatalities occur because people panic and try to sprint uphill ahead of the flames or remain trapped in narrow topographic "chimneys" where superheated convective gases reach 800 degrees Celsius (1,472 degrees Fahrenheit). Surviving a backcountry wildfire entrapment requires reading wind and slope physics immediately, moving laterally (perpendicular to the fire's path) and downhill, punching through a low-intensity flank into the already burned "Black" safe zone, ditching melting synthetic clothing, and preparing an emergency radiant-heat shelter site in bare rock, mineral soil, or shallow water if overrun.
Apa iki saiki¶
- Activate your satellite SOS beacon and call emergency services immediately with your exact GPS coordinates. Press the SOS button on your Garmin inReach, Zoleo, ACR Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), or Apple Emergency SOS via Satellite, and call your local nomer darurat (911 ing Amerika Serikat lan Kanada, 112 ing Uni Eropa, 999 ing Inggris, 000 ing Australia). Marang kirim garis lintang / bujur sing tepat, elevasi, jeneng jejak, ukuran grup, lan arah sing sampeyan tindakake supaya pesawat pengintai pemadam kebakaran udara lan kru helitack ngerti yen manungsa ana ing lemah ing sektor kasebut.
- ** AJA nyoba kanggo outrun a wildfire uphill utawa munggah saluran canyon sempit.** Fire balapan munggah munggah nganti ** 16 kaping luwih cepet ** saka gerakane mudhun amarga munggah convective panas pre-heats lan garing vegetasi ndhuwur iku, lan panah V-shaped canyons, gullies, lan saddles tumindak minangka cerobong asep jeblugan. Pindhah ** mudhun lan lateral ** (ing sudut 90 derajat ngliwati angin) adoh saka "Kepala" (pinggiran utama) geni.
- ** Kepala kanggo "Ireng" (lemah sing wis diobong resik) yen bisa diakses. ** Ing wildland pemadam kebakaran profesional (United States Forest Service lan doktrin NWCG), Papan paling aman ing wildfire ing "Ireng" amarga yen kabeh suket lumahing lan rerumput wis burned adoh, geni ora bisa ngobong lemah sing kaping pindho. Yen sampeyan cedhak karo sisih mburi geni utawa kurang intensitas geni ing ngendi geni ana ing ngisor ** 0,6 nganti 0,9 meter (2 nganti 3 kaki) dhuwur **, mlayu liwat pinggiran geni sing tipis menyang zona abu ireng sing adhem lan pindhah saka snags mati.
- ** Copot tas ransel sing abot lan copot kabeh lapisan njaba poliester, nilon, lan wulu sintetis yen ana jebakan.** Yen sampeyan kudu sprint kanggo urip utawa tahan panas sing sumringah, langsung nyelehake paket sing abot (simpen mung botol banyu, SOS satelit, lapisan wol / katun, lan pot logam / trowel). Polypropylene, bulu poliester, lan cangkang nilon ultralight ** nyawiji ing suhu 160 nganti 250 derajat Celsius (320 nganti 480 derajat Fahrenheit)** saka panas sing sumringah, gabung dadi kobongan tingkat katelu sing jero sanajan ora ana geni sing ndemek sampeyan. Nganggo 100% wol, 100% katun (denim), utawa kulit.
- Golek Zona Penyebaran Survival sing amba lan bebas bahan bakar (rock slide, scree field, gravel bar, utawa meadow) yen sampeyan ora bisa uwal. Yen geni mateni kabeh rute uwal, pindhah langsung menyang wilayah paling gedhe kanthi nol utawa minimal vegetasi sing bisa diobong: lapangan watu granit sing gedhe utawa lereng, dalan lemah sing amba, dalan sing amba, dalan sing amba, lepen utawa kali kerikil. Mbusak kabeh jarum garing, godhong, lan sikat mudhun menyang ** lemah mineral ** ing paling sethithik radius 3 nganti 6 meter (10 nganti 20 kaki) ing sekitar sampeyan.
- Ngalembana kanthi irung lan tutuk dipencet menyang rereget lembab utawa kain katun/wol sing teles nalika geni ngarep liwati. Aja ngadeg utawa mlayu nalika geni ngarep utama lan gelombang kumelun sing panas banget ngliwati papan sing resik: napas siji saka hawa panas banget ing tingkat mripat (**300+ derajat Celcius / 572+ derajat Fahrenheit sajrone sawetara menit) Ngapusi kanthi rata ing rereget sing kosong (utawa dicelupake ing gulu kanthi aliran sing amba kanthi kaos wol / katun sing teles ing sirahmu), gali parit cilik kanggo pasuryan kanggo ambegan lapisan udhara 15-centimeter (6 inci) sing luwih adhem ing jejere lemah, lan tetep mudhun nganti gelombang panas utama liwati.

Why synthetic outdoor gear (nylon tents, sleeping bags, and polyester shirts) is a fatal trap in radiant heat
Modern ultralight backpacking gear is almost 100% petroleum-based plastic: silicone-coated nylon tents, Dyneema tarps, polyester base layers, fleece jackets, and down sleeping bags with 10-denier nylon shells. Never crawl inside a nylon backpacking tent or synthetic sleeping bag to "shield" yourself from an approaching wildfire. Radiant infrared waves traveling 30 to 60 meters (100 to 200 feet) ahead of the flames will instantly melt and ignite a nylon tent or sleeping bag around your body, turning it into a shrink-wrapped napalm oven. Strip off all synthetic outer shells and fleece, keep merino wool, cotton, or leather boots/gloves on your skin, and use bare mineral dirt, rock, or water as your thermal barrier.
Phase 1: Understanding wildfire physics in mountain and forest terrain¶
A backcountry hiker who understands how fire interacts with Topography, Fuel, and Wind can predict where a wildfire will accelerate and where it will stall, avoiding the exact terrain traps that have killed both recreational hikers and wildland firefighters.
The 4 terrain and wind laws of wildfire behavior¶
| Fire Behavior Factor | Mekanisme Fisik | Rate of Spread Impact | Tactical Rule for Hikers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Slope Steepness (The Uphill Acceleration Law) | Flames lean toward an uphill slope, bathing the unburned brush above the fire in intense radiant heat while rising convective hot air pre-dries the canopy upslope. | For every 10-degree increase in slope, the wildfire's rate of uphill spread doubles (a fire moving at 3 km/h on flat ground accelerates to 12 km/h on a 20-degree slope and 24+ km/h on a 30-degree slope). | Never try to out-climb a fire uphill. Conversely, wildfires move very slowly downhill (unless pushed by extreme downslope winds like Santa Ana or Diablo winds). If you are below a fire on a calm afternoon, moving downhill away from it gives you a massive speed advantage. |
| 2. Topographic Chimneys, Gullies, and Saddles | Narrow V-shaped ravines, box canyons, chutes, and mountain saddles (passes between two peaks) constrict rising hot air and funnel wind like a blacksmith's bellows. | Creates explosive "blow-up" runs where flames erupt 50 to 100 meters (165 to 330 feet) into the air and race up the gully at 30+ km/h (20+ mph). | Treat narrow V-drainages, gullies, and ridge saddles as no-go death zones when fire is in the watershed. Stay on broad, open benches, flat valley bottoms, or the leeward side of barren rocky ridges. |
| 3. Diurnal Mountain Winds (Upslope by Day, Downslope by Night) | Solar heating of mountain slopes from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM creates strong upslope and up-canyon thermal winds. After sunset, cooling air sinks, creating downslope winds. | Fire intensity, spotting distance, and uphill spread peak violently between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM when temperature is highest, relative humidity is lowest, and upslope winds align with topography. | Expect a placid morning ground fire to explode into a fast-moving crown fire after 1:00 PM. Do not linger to "take photos" of a midday smoke column. |
| 4. Fuel Type (Light Flashy Fuels vs. Heavy Timber) | Cheatgrass garing, chaparral, sagebrush, lan rereged jarum pinus duwe rasio permukaan-kanggo-volume dhuwur ("bahan bakar sumunar") lan langsung murub. | Kobongan suket lan rerumputan obah 3 nganti 5 kaping luwih cepet tinimbang geni kayu kanopi sing ditutup (kobongan suket bisa ngluwihi 20 nganti 35 km/jam), sanajan kayu atos kobong luwih panas lan luwih suwe yen diobong. | Lereng bukit sing suket katon gampang dilewati, nanging geni suket sing didorong angin bakal ngalahake pelari sajrone sawetara detik. Nanging, suket kobong ing ** 60 kanggo 120 detik **, nggawe "Ireng" konco geni suket langsung slamet. |
Fase 2: Geometri rute uwal lan nyebrang menyang "Ireng"¶
Petugas pemadam kebakaran Wildland ora nate mlebu ing zona geni tanpa nggawe LCES (Pengawas, Komunikasi, Rute Uwal, lan Zona Aman). Yen sampeyan mambu asap utawa ndeleng bledug nalika hiking, mandheg 30 detik kanggo peta anatomi geni sadurunge mlaku kanthi wuta.
Anatomi saka wildfire lan carane uwal saka iku¶
Saben geni sing didorong angin utawa lereng nduweni papat bagean sing béda:
- Sirah: Angin mudhun / munggah ing pojok geni sing geni paling dhuwur, panas paling mateni, asap paling kenthel, lan nyebar paling cepet. Aja mapan langsung ing ngarepe Kepala kobongan.
- Flanks: Sisih kiwa lan tengen geni, sejajar karo arah angin. Dhuwur geni ing pinggir luwih murah lan alon-alon metu.
- Wong mburi (Tumit): Mundhut / mudhun pinggir mburi geni, sing creeps alon marang angin karo geni cilik.
- Kebakaran Titik: Kobongan anyar murub 0,5 nganti 3 kilometer (0,3 nganti 2 mil) ing ngarepe geni utama dening bara geni (brands). Spot fires mbebayani amarga bisa ngobong * konco * sampeyan ing dalan lan jiwitake sampeyan ing antarane rong ngarep geni.

Kepiye lan kapan kudu mlebu menyang "Ireng"¶
Kanggo pejalan kaki sing ora dilatih, mlaku *menuju * garis geni kanggo nyabrang menyang area sing diobong kaya edan. Nanging ing sajarah pemadam kebakaran ing wildland, ** nyebrang menyang "Ireng" wis nylametake atusan nyawa ** nalika mlayu saka geni ing sikat sing ora diobong ("Ijo") wis kabukten fatal.
- **Mengapa "Ireng" aman: ** Sawise suket, sagebrush, utawa understory alas wis kobong, ora ana bahan bakar lemah kanggo diobong. Malah yen ngarep geni utama rages 100 meter adoh ing "Ijo," wong sing ngadeg ing jembar jembar "Ireng" rampung aman saka overrun.
- Yen sampeyan BISA nyebrang menyang The Black: Ing bahan bakar entheng nganti medium (grasslands, shrublands mbukak, alas kayu oak, utawa alas pinus mbukak tanpa log sing abot) ing sadawane Mburi utawa Flank sing sepi geni sing dhuwure geni ** ing ngisor 0,6 nganti 0,9 meter (2 nganti 3 kaki)** lan zona murub aktif mung 1 nganti 3 kaki (3 nganti 3 kaki) ** lan zona murub aktif mung 3 nganti 3 meter
- Copot tas ransel lan jaket sintetis.
- Tuangake banyu saka botol ing sandhangan wol / katun, rambut, lan bandana katun sing diikat ing irung lan tutuk.
- Tutup rai lan mripat nganggo lengen sing nganggo sarung tangan utawa ditutupi, tahan ambegan nganti 3 detik mlayu, lan cepet-cepet ngliwati celah cilik ing geni menyang lemah ireng sing diobong.
- Lumaku 30 nganti 50 meter (100 nganti 165 kaki) ing jero ireng nganti lemah krasa adhem lan panas sumringah saka pinggir ijo sing ora kobong suda.
- Beboyo sing kudu diwaspadai ing njero "Ireng":
- ** Mudhun "Widowmaker" Snags: ** Burned wit ngadeg lan hollowed-metu werna ambruk tanpa bebaya sawise geni liwat. Ngadeg ing clearing nang sumur ireng adoh saka dhuwur sembarang wit burned.
- White Ash Pit: Kanthong jero saka alus awu putih nuduhake tunggul wit sing wis kobong utawa sistem oyot isih mencorong ing 500 derajat Celsius (932 derajat Fahrenheit) ing lemah. Mlaku menyang jugangan awu putih nyebabake kobongan sikil lan sikil tingkat katelu. Langkah mung ing rock ngalangi utawa char ireng lancip, tau menyang depresi awu putih jero.
- Re-burn ing Canopy Unburned: Yen mung rereged jarum lemah diobong ("underburn") nalika jarum pinus ijo ing makutha wit nduwur sirah isih utuh lan unburned, owah-owahan angin dumadakan isih bisa nimbulaké ** geni makutha maneh kobong ** ndhuwur sirah. Mung gumantung ing The Black ing ngendi kanopi uga diobong utawa ora ana mahkota wit nduwur sirah sing padhet.
Fase 3: Milih Zona Survival Last-Resort nalika overrun¶
Yen wildfire maju cepet banget kanggo uwal lan geni dhuwur banget (3+ meter / 10+ kaki) kanggo doyo liwat menyang The Black, sampeyan duwe sawetara menit kanggo milih ** Last-Resort Survival Zone ** kanggo urip ing wacana ngarep geni.
Sing mateni sampeyan sajrone overrun: Radiant Heat lan Superheated Gas¶
Sampeyan ora kudu disentuh dening geni siji kanggo mati ing wildfire. Loro pembunuh sing ora katon ndhisiki lan ngiringi ngarep api:
- ** Kalor Radiant (Radiasi Infra Merah):** Lelungan ing garis lurus kanthi kacepetan cahya saka tembok geni. Ing 10 meter (33 kaki) saka geni makutha utama, fluks panas sumringah ngluwihi 40 kanggo 80 kilowatt saben kothak meter, cukup kanggo blister kulit manungsa gundhul ing 3 detik lan ngobong sandhangan. Amarga panas sumringah lumaku kanthi ketat ing garis lurus (line-of-sight), nempatake penghalang sing padhet lan ora gampang kobong (watu gedhe, bank rereget, parit jero, utawa banyu) ing antarane awak lan tembok api ngalangi 100% panas sinar langsung.
- Udhara Superheated Convective (Cedera Saluran Udara Termal): Udhara sing panas banget (300 nganti 800 derajat Celsius / 572 nganti 1,472 derajat Fahrenheit) muter ing ngarep lan liwat ngarep geni. Nyedhot siji ambegan udhara 300 derajat nyebabake edema laring langsung (abuh saka kothak swara lan tenggorokan) sing nutup saluran napas. Nanging, amarga udhara panas mundhak, lapisan udhara ing 10 nganti 15 sentimeter (4 nganti 6 inci) saka rereget mineral sing gundhul tetep atusan derajat luwih adhem lan nahan oksigen sing bisa dihirup.
Rangking Zona Survival Last-Resort saka paling apik nganti paling awon¶
| Opsi Survival Zone | Rating Survival | Carane Posisi Dhewe kanggo Urip | Pitfalls Kritis kanggo Nyingkiri |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Lapangan Talus / Scree Boulder Gedhe utawa Slab Granit Barren | Apik banget (Nol bahan bakar) | Pindhah paling sethithik 30 nganti 50 meter (100 nganti 165 kaki) menyang tengah lapangan watu gundhul adoh saka pinggir alas. Nyelehake awak mudhun menyang depresi ** konco watu gedhe ** madhep adoh saka geni nyedhak supaya pamblokiran granit ngalangi line-of-sight sumringah panas. | Aja nyusup menyang cerobong asep vertikal sing jero lan sempit ing ngendi asap konvektif lan panas bakal munggah. |
| 2. Wide River, Lake, utawa Deep Mountain Stream | ** Apik banget ** (Yen amba lan bisa diakses) | Wade into water at least 0.6 to 1 meter (2 to 3 feet) deep away from overhanging brushy banks. Submerge your body up to your chin, drape a wet wool or cotton shirt/towel over your head and face, and breathe through the wet cloth just above the water surface as the flame front passes over the banks. | Never shelter in a tiny, narrow dry creek bed choked with willow brush (riparian brush burns hotter than almost any other fuel). Never climb into an elevated plastic/wooden water tank or stock trough where the water will boil. |
| 3. Wide Dirt Road, Bulldozer Fireline, or Gravel Bar | Good | Lie flat face-down in the road ditch or against the cut-bank on the side closest to the approaching fire (so the dirt cut-bank deflects radiant heat and flames up and over your back). Scrape away all dry grass and pine needles for 3+ meters around you. | Do not stand or run down a smoky road where zero-visibility firefighting vehicles or falling trees can strike you. |
| 4. Scraped Bare-Dirt Clearing in Sparse Timber / Meadow | Last Resort | Choose the widest natural opening with the shortest grass. Use your boot heels, trekking pole, or metal trowel/pot to scrape a 2-by-3-meter (6-by-10-foot) patch down to bare mineral dirt. Dig a shallow 15-centimeter (6-inch) depression for your face and torso. Lie completely flat face-down with feet pointed toward the approaching flames. | Ditch your backpack and isobutane stove fuel canisters at least 15 to 20 meters (50 to 65 feet) away before lying down so your pack does not catch embers on your back and your stove gas canister does not explode next to your head. |
Step-by-step Overrun Survival Procedure (The 10-Minute Flame Pass)¶
In most forest and brush wildfires, the intense flaming front takes only 2 to 10 minutes to pass over a stationary point (though smoke, embers, and radiant heat from burning logs continue afterward). If you are forced to lie down in a clearing, road cut, or behind a boulder:
- Throw your backpack and stove fuel canister 20 meters (65 feet) away. Keep only your water bottles, a wool/cotton garment or leather gloves, and your satellite SOS device in a pocket underneath your torso.
- Cover every square centimeter of bare skin with non-synthetic fabric and soil: Pull down cotton/wool sleeves, turn up your collar, put on leather or wool gloves, and pull a wet cotton bandana or merino wool buff over your nose, mouth, and ears. If you have bare arms or legs, rub wet mud or loose mineral dirt thickly over your exposed skin to reflect infrared heat.
- Dig a "Breathing Pocket" in the dirt: Scrape a fist-sized hollow in the cool, damp mineral dirt directly beneath your nose and mouth. Press your face firmly into that dirt hollow with your damp cotton/wool cloth covering your mouth and nose.
- Stay flat and DO NOT GET UP when the roar and heat peak: As the flame front hits the edge of your clearing, the noise will sound like a jet engine, darkness will be total, embers will shower your back, and the heat on your back and calves will be agonizing. Do not panic, do not lift your head to gasp, and do not stand up and run. Standing up puts your lungs into 500-degree-Celsius air and guarantees fatal airway burns within two breaths. Stay pressed flat into the dirt breathing slow, shallow breaths from the soil pocket until the roar subsides and the air cools.
Phase 4: Vehicle entrapment at a trailhead or forest road¶
Sometimes hikers make it back to their parked car at a remote dirt trailhead only to find the single-lane forest road out is already cut off by flames or fallen burning trees.
- A parked trailhead vehicle is safer than running on foot through burning brush, provided you position the car properly:
- Park on the barest ground available: Drive onto the center of the widest bare dirt/gravel parking pad or rocky turnout, as far away from trees, brush, and wooden trailhead kiosks as possible. Do NOT park over dry tall grass or pine needle beds (which will ignite directly underneath your gas tank and catalytic converter).
- Keep the engine idling (until oxygen drops) with headlights and hazard flashers ON: Keeping headlights and emergency flashers on allows firefighters and helicopters to spot your vehicle through dense black smoke.
- Roll all windows 100% UP and set climate control to "RECIRCULATE" (or turn vents OFF): Never leave windows cracked open; glowing embers and superheated toxic gas will blow inside the cabin.
- Get down on the vehicle floorboard below the window glass line: Window glass transmits radiant infrared heat directly onto your face and arms (and tempered side windows can shatter from extreme heat). Lie down on the floor mats below the level of the metal doors, and cover everyone completely with wool blankets, cotton jackets, or spare clothing/floor mats (never synthetic sleeping bags).
- Expect loud noises and stay inside until the main flame front passes: Tires may pop and melt, exterior plastic trim may catch fire, and heavy gusts will rock the vehicle. Modern automotive fuel tanks rarely explode immediately; stay low under the window line inside the metal cabin until the outside flame wall moves past, then exit onto the burned bare dirt upwind if the vehicle exterior catches fire.
Phase 5: Post-fire medical triage and navigating out of the burn zone¶
Once the main fire front has passed and the air cools enough to stand up:
- Check for Airway Thermal Burns (Red Flag Number 1): Look at your companions' faces. Singed nasal hairs, soot around the mouth or in sputum, a hoarse or raspy voice, brassy cough, stridor (high-pitched wheezing when inhaling), or difficulty swallowing indicate inhalation thermal injury. The upper airway can swell completely shut over the next 1 to 4 hours. Re-trigger your Satellite SOS immediately and report "Suspected airway burns requiring immediate helicopter hoist/evacuation." Keep the victim sitting upright (semi-Fowler's position) to reduce airway swelling and minimize physical exertion.
- Treat Cutaneous Burns Correctly: Cool active burns with clean cool water from your drinking bottles for 10 to 20 minutes if available, remove any melted clothing ONLY if it is not stuck to the skin (never peel melted nylon or polyester out of a burn wound; cut around it), and cover burns loosely with clean dry gauze or a clean cotton shirt (see Burns). Protect burn victims from hypothermia once the heat subsides.
- Navigate Out Using "The Black" While Avoiding Post-Fire Deadly Hazards:
- Never walk back into unburned green brush where shifting winds can reignite the flank. Stay inside The Black or on wide bare roads while waiting for rescue crews.
- Watch overhead continuously for falling burned trees ("Widowmakers") and underground burned-out root cavities / white ash pits that collapse under a hiker's boot.
- Beware of rolling rocks and debris on steep slopes: In steep mountain canyons, wildfires burn away the logs and brush holding talus rocks in place, sending bowling-ball-sized rocks tumbling down onto trails continuously after the fire passes.
Pitakonan sing kerep ditakoni¶
Should I pour my drinking water all over my clothes and backpack before escaping a wildfire?
Be strategic with your limited water. Wetting a 100% cotton bandana or merino wool buff to tie over your nose and mouth (and wetting a cotton/wool shirt or hat just before crossing through a low flame flank into The Black or lying down for an overrun) is highly effective because evaporating water absorbs latent heat and filters hot smoke particles. However, do NOT dump all of your drinking water over your clothes 45 minutes early while trying to hike out: in 45-degree-Celsius (113-degree-Fahrenheit) radiant heat and low humidity, wet clothes dry completely in 10 minutes, and severe dehydration will cause heat exhaustion and muscle cramping that prevents you from moving fast. Keep at least 1 liter of drinking water inside your bottle to sip and to wet your breathing cloth at the final moment of need.
Can I use my Mylar " emergency space blanket" from my first aid kit as a wildland fire shelter?
NO, never wrap yourself in a Mylar emergency space blanket during a wildfire. While an official USFS Wildland Fire Shelter looks foil-coated on the outside, it is a specialized multi-layer laminate of woven silica, fiberglass, high-temperature adhesive, and heavy aluminum foil engineered to withstand 500+ degrees Celsius. A consumer Mylar space blanket is an ultra-thin sheet of PET plastic (polyester film) with a microscopic vapor-deposited aluminum tint that melts, shrinks, and ignites at roughly 250 degrees Celsius (482 degrees Fahrenheit), melting plastic directly onto your skin. Leave the Mylar space blanket in your ditched pack and use bare mineral dirt, boulders, or water instead.
How can I tell while hiking if a distant smoke column is moving toward me or away from me?
Look at two indicators: the lean angle of the smoke column and the color and texture of the base vs. top. If the smoke column is leaning toward your position or ashes and charred pine needles begin falling around you like snow, you are directly downwind in the path of the Head of the fire (and in the ember spot-fire zone). Dense black or dark copper/brown boiling smoke indicates heavy timber or brush burning intensely at high speed, whereas thin, lazy white smoke usually indicates lighter grass or cooling fuels. Do not wait to see flames, if ash is falling on you or visibility drops, evacuate perpendicular to the wind immediately.
Yen aku weruh helikopter pemadam kebakaran utawa tanker udhara mabur ing ndhuwur, apa sing kudu daklakoni?
Kaping pisanan, coba katon ing papan sing mbukak (ngalambai sandhangan non-sintetik sing padhang utawa pangilon sinyal) MUNG nalika pesawat cilik utawa helikopter nggoleki sampeyan. Kapindho, yen tanker udhara gedhe utawa helikopter abot karo ember banyu nggawe pass dhuwur-dhuwur langsung ing baris karo posisi sampeyan, njaluk warata ing lemah konco gedhe utawa gedhe wit amba langsung (madhep adoh karo tangan nglindhungi sirah). A 4.000-15.000-liter (1.000-4.000-galon) drop saka Phos-Chek fire retardant slurry utawa banyu dropped ing 130 knots bobote nganti 15 metrik ton: drop kurang bisa njepret 30-centimeter (12-inch lan setengah kikir wit, mabur tlutuh bening) wong jejeg ing impact. Yen sampeyan dilapisi karo retardant Phos-Chek abang, mbilasake mripat lan kulit nganggo banyu yen aman; iku biasane pupuk amonium fosfat lan lunyu nanging ora beracun ing kontak kulit singkat.
Napa ngeduk parit cethek ing rereget mineral sing kosong dadi efektif kanggo njaga sampeyan urip sajrone overrun?
Lemah minangka salah sawijining insulator termal paling apik ing alam. Malah nalika geni makutha catastrophic sing murub ing 1.000 derajat Celsius (1.832 derajat Fahrenheit) ing ndhuwur kanopi wit, panas penetrates mudhun menyang reged mineral gundhul dening mung 2 kanggo 5 centimeters (1 kanggo 2 inci). Salajengipun, amarga udhara superheated punika buoyant lan munggah violently munggah ing kolom konveksi geni kang, lapisan wates lancip saka adhem, udhara padhet ngrangkul depressions paling ngisor saka lemah gundhul. Mencet awak warata menyang parit rereget scraped tetep mburi ngisor sumringah utama / jeblugan convective lan ngijini irung narik udhara saka lapisan wates 10-centimeter kelangan.
Ing endi aku bisa sinau pertolongan pertama ing ara-ara samun lan ngobong perawatan sadurunge perjalanan backpacking sabanjure?
Njupuk Aid First Aid (WFA) utawa kursus First Aid lan CPR standar liwat Palang Merah Amerika, St John Ambulance, NOLS Wilderness Medicine, utawa panyedhiya lokal sing disertifikasi, lan tansah mriksa peta agen pemadam kebakaran nasional resmi (kayata InciWeb ing Amerika Serikat, Sistem Informasi Kebakaran Wildland Kanada, utawa Negara Darurat WA / NSW RFS Fires Near musim panas utawa aplikasi musim gugur ing Australia).
