ရေအေးနှစ်မြှုပ်ခြင်း၏ ဇီဝကမ္မအဆင့် 4 ဆင့် (1-10-1 + ကယ်ဆယ်ရေးပြိုကျခြင်း)

Canadian survival physiologist Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht formulated the internationally adopted 1-10-1 Principle (used by the US Coast Guard, Royal National Lifeboat Institution in the UK, and Transport Canada) to describe the first three stages of immersion in cold water below 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). Maritime search-and-rescue medics add a critical fourth stage that occurs right as you are pulled from the water.

Stage သတ်မှတ်ချိန် Physiological Mechanism Primary Cause of Death Required Survival Action
Stage 1: Cold Shock Response First 1 Minute (peaks at 30 seconds, subsides by 60 to 90 seconds) Sudden cooling of skin thermoreceptors triggers an automatic gasp reflex (inhaling 2 to 3 liters instantly), hyperventilation (up to 60 breaths/min), and a massive spike in heart rate and blood pressure Immediate drowning from gasping while face is underwater, or sudden cardiac arrest / stroke Keep face above water; hold onto anything buoyant; do not try to swim; focus 100% on slow, controlled breathing for 60 seconds
Stage 2: Cold Incapacitation (Swim Failure) Next 10 Minutes (5 to 15 minutes depending on water temp) Extreme vasoconstriction cuts blood flow to arms and legs; cooling of peripheral nerves slows nerve signals, paralyzing fingers first, then forearms and legs Swim failure and drowning: Swimmer can no longer coordinate strokes, grip a rope, or keep mouth above waves without a PFD Put on and tighten life jacket immediately; climb onto hull; activate EPIRB/VHF radio; loop wrist through a safety lanyard onto the boat before hands go numb
Stage 3: True Hypothermia 1 Hour or More (30 to 120+ minutes) Core body temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit); shivering peaks then stops below 30 to 32°C (86 to 90°F), followed by confusion and unconsciousness Loss of consciousness leading to airway submersion (if not wearing a high-flotation life jacket with collar) or cardiac arrest Stay out of water on hull, or hold HELP / Huddle posture; keep head covered; even if unconscious, a proper life jacket keeps your airway above water for hours
Stage 4: Circum-Rescue Collapse Just Before, During, or Minutes After Rescue Mental relief drops stress hormones (adrenaline), while being lifted vertically out of water removes hydrostatic water pressure on the legs, causing cold acidotic blood to pool in legs and return to the heart ("afterdrop") Sudden ventricular fibrillation (cardiac arrest) during helicopter hoist or boat ladder climb Keep long-immersion victims horizontal: Lift them horizontally out of the water in a double-strap sling or cradle; never make them climb a vertical ladder or stand up

Escaping an inverted cabin, sailboat cockpit, or kayak spray skirt

Before you can manage cold water on the surface, you must safely clear the vessel if it rolls upside down on top of you:

  • Never inflate a manual \(\text{CO}_2\) life jacket inside an enclosed cabin: If you are inside a boat cabin, wheelhouse, or beneath a bimini canopy when the vessel capsizes, do not pull the inflation cord on a manual inflatable life vest until you have swum out from under the roof. Inflating a high-buoyancy vest inside a flooded cabin pins you tightly against the ceiling away from the downward exit windows and doors.
  • Follow visual light or touch-track to exit: Open your eyes underwater; daylight shines downward into the water around the perimeter of an overturned hull. Keep one hand touching a solid structural reference point (gunwale, window frame, or companionway steps) and pull yourself down and outward before floating to the surface.
  • Kayak wet-exit (spray skirt release): If your sea kayak or whitewater kayak capsizes and you cannot execute an Eskimo roll, do not panic or pull blindly at the sides of the neoprene spray skirt. Lean forward toward the front deck to protect your face, slide both hands forward along the cockpit rim until you grab the bright fabric grab loop at the very front tip of the spray skirt, pull it forward and upward off the cockpit lip, place your hands on the cockpit hips, and push the boat forward off your legs like taking off a pair of pants.

How to broadcast a VHF Marine Radio Mayday and activate an EPIRB

Once you are on the surface and your breathing is under control, alerting search-and-rescue (SAR) within your 10-minute finger-dexterity window cuts rescue arrival time from days to under an hour.

1. Satellite Beacons: EPIRB and PLB

  • EPIRB (for vessels) and PLB (carried on your life jacket): Flip the protective tab and press the ON / ACTIVATE button (some float-free Category I EPIRBs activate automatically upon hitting water).
  • Uncoil the flexible antenna so it points straight up toward the sky. The 406 MHz satellite signal cannot penetrate water, so hold or tether a PLB onto your shoulder or the top of the overturned hull above the waterline, never submerged underwater.
  • Leave the beacon turned ON continuously until rescuers physically turn it off; its internal GPS and 121.5 MHz homing beacon guide Coast Guard helicopters directly to your hull in zero-visibility fog or darkness.

2. VHF Marine Radio (DSC Red Distress Button and Channel 16 Voice Script)

If you have a waterproof floating handheld VHF radio clipped to your life jacket (or can reach the vessel's fixed VHF):

  1. Press the Red "DISTRS / DSC" Button first: Lift the spring-loaded plastic cover and hold down the red Digital Selective Calling (DSC) button for 3 to 5 full seconds until it beeps continuously. This instantly beams your radio's digital registration and exact GPS coordinates to the Coast Guard and every commercial ship within 30 kilometers (20 miles).
  2. Switch to Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) at High Power (25W or 5W/6W on handheld), hold the microphone 5 centimeters (2 inches) from your mouth shielded from wind, press Push-To-Talk (PTT), and speak slowly:
  3. "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY."
  4. "This is vessel [Vessel Name spoken 3 times, plus Call Sign or MMSI number]."
  5. "MAYDAY, [Vessel Name]."
  6. "My position is [read GPS Latitude and Longitude, or distance and bearing from a known landmark, island, or buoy]."
  7. "We have capsized and are in the water clinging to an overturned [length and color] hull."
  8. "There are [total number] persons in the water, [number] children or injured, wearing [orange/yellow] life jackets."
  9. "OVER." Release the talk button and listen for 15 seconds before repeating.

Maximizing survival time in the water: clothes, HELP, and Huddle

If the boat has sunk completely or waves prevent you from staying on the inverted hull, follow these thermal conservation rules:

  • Keep all your clothes, shoes, and hat on: A dangerous myth claims that wet clothing and boots "weigh you down" in the water. In reality, clothing fibers trap a stationary boundary layer of water next to your skin that warms up slightly from your body heat, acting like a basic wetsuit and slowing heat loss by up to 40 percent compared to bare skin. Even heavy boots weigh almost nothing while submerged in water once air is displaced. Only remove an unbuckled heavy coat if you lack a life jacket and must tread water (though you should instead trap air inside buttoned-up jacket pockets or knotted trouser legs for makeshift flotation).
  • Assume the HELP posture (if alone in a life jacket): Nearly 50 percent of your body heat escapes from four high-blood-flow areas where large arteries run close to the skin: the head/neck, the sides of the chest, the armpits, and the groin. Pull both knees tightly up to your chest, cross your ankles, press your upper arms tightly against the sides of your ribs, and fold your forearms across your chest. Keep your head and neck as high out of the water as possible.
  • Form the Group Huddle (if 2 or more people in life jackets): Float in a tight ring facing each other with the sides of your chests pressed firmly together, wrapping your arms around the backs of the people on either side of you and intertwining your legs below to trap a warm column of water in the center. Place children, injured passengers, or anyone without a life jacket inside the center of the circle.
