  5. Walk single-file between the two running rails if on the track bed: If no raised wall walkway exists and you must walk on the track floor, stay strictly in the center between the two steel running rails of your own track, never crossing over to parallel tracks where high-speed trains may still be approaching.
  6. Head upwind against the airflow if smoke is present and locate a Blue Light Station: Move low beneath rising smoke toward fresh incoming air, and look for a blue lantern light on the tunnel wall marking an emergency telephone and traction-power cutoff switch.

Danger

Never step on, sit on, or use the wooden, plastic, or fiberglass protective cover board sitting on top of a subway third rail as a step when climbing out of a train. Third-rail cover boards are only thin splash and tool guards; they are not designed to support human body weight. Stepping on a cover board snaps the brackets instantly, dropping your foot directly onto 600 to 750 volts of direct current (DC) with thousands of amperes of amperage, which causes immediate fatal electrocution. If someone is in contact with a live third rail, never grab them with your bare hands; call your local emergency number immediately (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) or consult our

Surviving the impact: crash biomechanics and brace positions

Unlike passenger cars, most urban subways, light-rail trams, and regional commuter trains do not have passenger seatbelts, and up to two-thirds of rush-hour subway riders are standing when an impact occurs. When a train moving at 80 km/h (50 mph) derails or strikes an obstruction, unbraced standing passengers are thrown the length of the car at highway speed, striking metal poles, glass partitions, and other riders.

How to brace in the 2 to 5 seconds after feeling derailment vibration

A train almost never stops instantaneously; when wheels drop off the steel rail onto wooden or concrete ties (sleepers) and stone ballast, you will first hear a deafening metallic roar and feel violent vertical bouncing for several seconds before the cars jackknife, tilt, or collide with a tunnel wall.

  • If standing in a subway or commuter car: Do not try to remain standing by holding an overhead hanging strap; your upper-body grip strength cannot resist a 5G deceleration force. Immediately drop flat onto the floor or onto your knees, press your back or shoulder tightly against a fixed seat base or bulkhead wall facing away from the direction of travel, and wrap your arms around the bottom of a vertical floor-to-ceiling pole while tucking your chin to your chest.
  • If seated facing forward (in the direction of travel): Place both feet flat on the floor behind your knees, bend forward at the waist so your torso rests near your thighs, press your forehead against the padded seatback in front of you, and lock your hands behind the back of your neck to stabilize your cervical spine and block flying glass.
  • If seated facing backward (opposite the direction of travel): Backward-facing rail seats are biomechanically the safest seats in a frontal collision because the seatback supports your entire spine and head during primary deceleration. Sit all the way back with your spine and the back of your head pressed firmly against the headrest, plant your feet wide on the floor to brace against the secondary rebound, and cross your arms over your chest or face.
  • Shield your eyes and airway from brake and concrete dust: As soon as a train derails in an underground tunnel, decades of accumulated steel brake dust, silica ballast dust, and shattered window glass fill the cabin air. Pull your shirt collar, jacket, or scarf up over your nose and mouth and squint or shield your eyes until the dust settles.

Stay inside vs. evacuate: the golden rule of rail safety

Once the train comes to a halt and emergency backup battery lights flicker on, natural human claustrophobia makes passengers want to pry open the doors and jump onto the tracks. Resist this urge and stop fellow passengers from forcing doors open unless a life-threatening hazard is inside your car.

Why staying inside the car is almost always safer

  • The Faraday cage effect against overhead high voltage: When an electric commuter or intercity train derails, the overhead 25,000-volt catenary wire frequently snaps and drapes across the metal roof of the passenger car. As long as you remain completely inside the metal railcar, the current flows harmlessly around the outer skin to ground. If you step out the door and touch the metal handrail while placing one foot on the ground, you become the path to ground and are electrocuted instantly.
  • Parallel-track high-speed train strikes: On multi-track rail corridors and subway express tunnels, trains on the adjacent track only 1.2 meters (4 feet) away may still be hurtling toward the crash site at 100 to 200 km/h (60 to 125 mph) before central dispatch knows a derailment has occurred.
  • Automated traction-power shutdown delay: Rail control centers need several minutes to confirm an incident, halt adjacent trains, and remotely de-energize the third rail across the tunnel sector.

The 5 conditions that require immediate self-evacuation

Only open emergency doors and leave the train without crew supervision if:

  1. Visible flames or scorching heat are spreading inside or directly beneath your railcar.
  2. Thick, choking smoke is filling the car and you cannot move through the end doors into a smoke-free car.
  3. Water is actively rising inside the car (such as inside an underwater river tube, coastal causeway, or flash-flooded subway cut).
  4. A hazardous chemical or diesel fuel leak from an adjacent freight or locomotive tank car is pooling around your car with strong chemical fumes.
  5. The car is teetering unstably on the edge of a collapsed embankment or structural breach where staying inside risks an immediate drop.

Track and tunnel electrical hazards explained

Every person who rides a subway or commuter train should understand the physical layout of the track bed so they know exactly where lethal electricity lives and where it is safe to place their feet.

Track Component Typical Voltage & Current How to Identify It Visually in a Dark Tunnel Hazard Level Safe Pedestrian Action
Third Rail (Contact Rail) 600 V to 1,000 V DC (Direct Current), 4,000+ Amps Raised heavier steel rail sitting on porcelain/fiberglass insulators 30 to 50 cm (12 to 20 in) outside one of the running rails, usually topped by a horizontal wooden or fiberglass cover board Instantly fatal on contact; can also shock through wet shoes or puddles touching the rail Never touch, step on, or step on the cover board. Always exit the train on the side away from the third rail
Four-Rail Subway Systems (e.g., London Underground) 630 V to 750 V DC split across an outside positive rail and a center negative rail One raised electrical rail outside the running rails plus a second raised electrical rail directly in the center between the running rails Fatal on contact Do not step on the raised center rail on 4-rail systems; step carefully onto the flat wooden/concrete sleepers between rails
Overhead Catenary Wires (Commuter, Light Rail, High-Speed) 1,500 V to 3,000 V DC or 11,000 V to 25,000 V AC (Alternating Current) Copper cables suspended overhead from poles or tunnel ceilings above the center of the train Fatal on contact or close proximity; 25,000 V AC can arc (jump) through the air up to 1.5 to 3 meters (5 to 10 feet) Never exit a car if overhead wires are hanging down near the doors; stay at least 6 meters (20 feet) away from downed wires
Running Rails (The Two Wheel Tracks) Low-voltage traction return path and track-circuit signaling The two smooth, shiny steel rails laid directly on the wooden or concrete cross-ties that the train wheels roll on Low electrical hazard, extreme slip hazard (coated in wheel grease and smooth steel) Step over the running rails, never on top of the slippery steel rail head; walk on the flat ties/ballast between them
Mechanical Track Switches (Points / Frogs) Motorized or hydraulic steel rail blades + electric snow-melter heaters Sections where two tracks merge and tapered steel rail blades slide side-to-side against the main rail

If fire, smoke, or crew orders require you to evacuate the train inside a tunnel or along an open right-of-way, follow this strict sequence to prevent falls and electrocution.

1. Choose the safest exit door in this exact priority order

  1. First choice: End doors between railcars (Inter-car gangway): If only one car has smoke or a small electrical fire underneath it, open the center door at the end of the car and walk across the threshold plate into the next car of the same train, closing the heavy fire-rated end door behind you. You stay completely off the tracks and out of danger.
  2. Second choice: Side door opening directly onto a raised tunnel benchwall / catwalk: Look out the windows on both the left and right sides of the car before pulling any emergency door release. Most subway tunnels have a raised concrete emergency walkway (benchwall) along one wall of the tunnel, while the third rail runs along the floor on the opposite side. Always open the door that faces the raised concrete walkway so you can step straight across onto the catwalk without dropping down to track level.
  3. Third choice: Front or rear cab end door with deployable ladder/ramp: If you must descend to track level, the end doors at the very front or very back of the train align directly with the safe center space between the two running rails and often feature built-in fold-down steps or evacuation ramps.
  4. Last resort: Side passenger doors down to track ballast: Standard train floors sit 1.2 to 1.5 meters (4 to 5 feet) above the uneven stones of the track bed, and the third rail often runs directly underneath one side of the car just 30 centimeters (12 inches) outside the wheels. If you must exit a side door to the ground:
    • Look down with your phone flashlight before moving and ask loudly: "Is the third rail on this side?" If you see the raised third rail and its wooden/fiberglass cover board directly below the doorway, do not use that side door; open the door on the opposite side of the car instead (after checking rigorously that no train is approaching on any adjacent track).
    • Do not jump out upright. Sit down on the edge of the doorway floor, turn around on your stomach, grip the inside floor edge or side handrails with both hands, and lower yourself down feet-first until your shoes touch the stone ballast.
