Eskailera mekanikoak harrapatzea eta pasabide mugikorren larrialdiak¶
Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.
Eskailera mekanikoak eta pasabide mugikorrak (autowalks) merkataritza guneetan, metro geltokietan, aireportuetan eta estadioetan funtzionatzen duten industria-kate-garraiatzaileak dira. 7,5 eta 30 kilowatt (10 eta 40 zaldi arteko) motor elektrikoek bultzatuta, zizare-engranajeak murrizteko unitateen bidez akoplatuta, eskailera mugikor bat giza bidaiari-pisua dozenaka tona aldi berean garraiatzeko diseinatuta dago, moteldu gabe. Motorra bidaiarien karga edozein dela ere abiadura konstantea mantentzeko diseinatuta dagoenez, makinak ezin du "sentitu" haurraren oinaren erresistentzia, gomazko trapu leun bat, oinetakoen lokarri bat edo arropa luze bat hutsune batean sartzen ari den.
Zapata, hatz edo arropa bat alboko gonaren sakearen barruan edo irteerako orrazi-plakaren azpian lotzen denean, eskailera mekaniko batek etenik gabeko zizaila-prentsa mekaniko gisa jokatzen du. Biziraupena eta gorputz-adarraren kontserbazioa Larrialdietarako Gelditzeko botoi gorriaren kokapen anatomiko zehatza jakitearen araberakoa da, eskailerara igo aurretik, oinetakoak moztu edo irrist egin aurretik lurreratzeko orraziaren goiko edo beheko plaka iritsi aurretik, eta inoiz ez saiatzean altzairuzko eskailerak suhiltzaileen hedagailu hidraulikorik gabe adar bat finkatuta.
Egin hau orain¶
- Sakatu berehala Larrialdi Gelditzeko botoi gorria goiko edo beheko lurreratzean: inoren oinetakoak, arropak, gurditxoak edo eskuak eskailera mekaniko batean edo pasabide mugikor batean harrapatzen baditu, oihukatu "Sakatu gelditzeko botoi gorria" lurreratzean daudenei korrika egiten ari zaren bitartean, zuk zeuk sakatu.
- Abisatu bidaiariei esku-baranda giltza ditzatela stop sakatu baino lehen: larrialdi-gelditzeko botoia sakatuz gero, motorraren potentzia mozten da eta balazta mekanikoa aktibatzen du, eskailera azkar geldiaraziz, zutik dauden txirrindulariak aurrerantz jaurti ditzaketen eskailera; oihukatu "Eutsi baranda, eskailera mekanikoa gelditu" botoia kolpatzen duzun bitartean.
- **Irratu oin biluzia harrapatuta dagoen oinetako batetik edo moztu oinetako lokarri bat: zure oinetako lokarri, bota edo goma bigunen zutoinaren artean harrapatzen bazara lurrerantz zoazenean, atera oin biluzia oinetakotik zuzenean edo urratu/moztu parpaila pausoa orrazira iritsi baino lehen.
- Ez saiatu inoiz harrapatutako gorputz-adarra zuzen ateratzen eskailera mekanikoa gelditzen denean: hatzak, behatzak edo ehun bigunak orraziaren azpian edo alboko gonaren hutsunearen barruan sartzen badira makina gelditu ondoren, indarrez tiratzeak azala eta nerbioak hautsiko ditu (espilatzea); eutsi gorputz-adarra oraindik eta itxaron Fire and Rescue ateratze teknikoa arte.
- Deitu larrialdi zerbitzuei eta eskatu Heavy Rescue eta EMS: markatu zure tokiko larrialdi-zenbakia (911 Estatu Batuetan eta Kanadan, 112 Europar Batasunean, 999 Erresuma Batuan edo ikusi gure larrialdi zenbakiak direktorioa) eta salatu eskailera mekaniko aktiboen harrapaketa mekaniko bat, suhiltzaileek hedagailu hidraulikoak eta entxufe-tresnak ekartzeko.
- Ez ibili inoiz mantentze-lanak egiten ari den geldirik dagoen eskailera mekaniko batera: eskailera mekaniko geldirik dauden eskailera mekanikoak kenduta edo balazta nagusi desaktibatuta bat-batean atzera egin dezake bidaiariaren pisuaren azpian, zinta iheskor baten antzera, eta txirrindulariak altzairuzko gidaritza-zulo irekian eroriz.
Orrazi-plaka mozteko arriskua goiko eta beheko lurreratzeetan
Gutxi gorabehera, eskailera mekanikoen gorputz-adarraren harrapaketa larrien ehuneko 75 alboko gona-panelean hasten dira ibilaldian zehar, baina anputazio eta birrintze-lesio hondamendienak segundo batzuk geroago gertatzen dira harrapatuta dagoen zapata edo oin hori lurreratzeko orrazi-plaka iristen denean. Goiko eta beheko lurreratzeetan, ildaskatua den aluminiozko eskailera berdindu eta desagertzen da geldirik dauden metalezko hortz ilara baten azpian (orraziaren plaka). Oin bat edo jantzi bat oraindik oinetako bati lotuta badago orrazi-plakara iristen denean, zuzenean marraztuko da 3 eta 5 milimetro arteko sare-hutsunean, non urratsak itzuleran tolesten diren. Atera beti oin biluzia trabatuta dagoen oinetako batetik inklinazioan zaudela.
Eskailera mekanikoen anatomia: harrapaketa mekanikoko 4 eremuak¶
Eskailera mekanikoek eta pasabide mugikorrek oinetakoak, eskuak eta arropak non eta nola harrapatzen dituzten ulertzeak arrisku handiko posizioak saihesten laguntzen die txirrindulariei eta gertukoei biktima bat non egonkortu identifikatzen laguntzen die.

Why soft foam clogs and flexible rubber boots are uniquely vulnerable¶
Over the past two decades, pediatric trauma centers and elevator/escalator safety regulators worldwide have documented thousands of severe foot entrapments involving soft, pliable ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam clogs and thin flexible rubber rain boots.
Hard leather dress shoes and firm athletic soles maintain their structural shape when they brush against the stationary steel skirt wall of an escalator. In contrast, soft foam clogs and thin rubber boots combine two dangerous physical properties: an exceptionally high coefficient of sliding friction against steel (creating grab rather than slip) and low compressive stiffness. When a child stands at the far edge of a step and brushes the toe or side of a foam clog against the stationary side skirt, friction drags the soft foam backward and downward, stretching and rolling the thin rubber like dough into a gap only 3 to 4 millimeters wide. Because the foam compresses easily, it bypasses the skirt deflection safety switches until the child's toes are pinned deep between the descending step riser and the steel wall.

Larrialdietarako Gelditzeko Botoi Gorriaren kokapen zehatzak¶
In an escalator emergency, bystanders lose critical seconds looking around the wall or ceiling for a control panel because they do not know where code requires the emergency stop switch to be mounted. Under both North American (ASME A17.1 / CSA B44) and European/International (EN 115) safety codes, every escalator and moving walkway has at least two manual Emergency Stop buttons, one at the top landing and one at the bottom landing:
- Lower Balustrade Newel Base (Most Common): Look at the curved end of the handrail support wall (the newel) right where you step onto or off the escalator, usually on the right-hand side facing the steps, approximately 15 to 45 centimeters (6 to 18 inches) above the floor (ankle to knee height) or directly beneath the curved nose of the handrail.
- Upper Inner Deck Moulding: On many commercial retail and airport escalators, the red push button is recessed into the angled stainless-steel deck trim right below the moving handrail curve at waist height (roughly 90 centimeters / 36 inches off the floor) at both landings.
- External Traffic Bollard or Post: In modern subway, metro, and high-traffic rail stations, an additional red mushroom-head stop button is often mounted on a silver post 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6.5 feet) in front of the landing entry.
- Clear Flip-Cover Guard: Many buttons are covered by a clear plastic hinged cover labeled "EMERGENCY STOP: LIFT COVER AND PUSH BUTTON". Lifting the plastic cover often sounds a local piezo buzzer to deter pranks; do not hesitate when lifting the cover makes a loud beep. Lift the plastic flap and push the red button firmly inward until the staircase brakes to a complete stop.
When NOT to push the Emergency Stop button
Never press an escalator's Emergency Stop button if a passenger has simply tripped or lost their balance in the middle of the staircase without any part of their body, clothing, or footwear being pinched inside the mechanism. Suddenly braking a crowded escalator throws dozens of standing passengers forward down the sharp aluminum step edges, causing secondary head trauma, hip fractures, and pile-ups. Only hit the stop button for an active or imminent mechanical entrapment, a person tumbling repeatedly at the bottom landing pile-up zone, or a structural step collapse.
Step-by-step response during an active entrapment¶
Phase 1: Freeing snagged clothing, shoelaces, or luggage before the landing¶
If your shoelace, drawstring, long coat, or skirt gets sucked into the comb plate or between two steps while the escalator is moving:
- Never bend down with your hands near the moving comb plate to untie a knot: Putting your fingers down next to a taut shoelace being wound into the step chain will pull your fingers directly under the comb teeth in a fraction of a second.
- Slip your foot out of the shoe immediately: Press the heel of your other shoe against the back of the snagged shoe and pull your stocking foot straight up and out. Leave the shoe to be chewed up by the comb plate, which will usually jam the comb plate impact switch and stop the escalator automatically.
- Tear or cut trapped fabric: If a scarf, long dress, or backpack strap is caught and pulling you down toward the steps, unbutton, unzip, or slip out of the garment or pack straps immediately, or use a pocket knife or trauma shears to slice the fabric cleanly away from your body.
Phase 2: Stabilizing a pinned casualty once the escalator has stopped¶
If a child's foot, hand, or a rider's leg is already wedged inside the step-to-skirt gap or beneath the comb plate when the machine comes to a halt:
- Assign one bystander to guard the Stop button: Have a dedicated adult stand directly over the pressed Emergency Stop button at the landing so an uninformed passerby or store clerk does not pull the button out or turn the key switch to restart the escalator while the person is still trapped.
- Do not let bystanders pry steps with crowbars: Escalator steps are cast from single-piece die-cast aluminum alloy bolted onto heavy roller chains under extreme tension. Attempting to pry between a step and the side skirt with a maintenance crowbar without unbolting the step or releasing the skirt bracing frequently snaps the brittle cast-aluminum step cleats into razor-sharp fragments or causes the step to spring back against the crushed bone.
- Support the casualty's body weight: If a child's foot is pinned at an awkward angle on an inclined step, sit on the step immediately below them and cradle their hips and torso so the weight of their body does not pull downward against the trapped ankle.
- Keep the casualty calm to prevent thrashing: Pain and terror cause trapped children to yank and twist their leg, turning a simple soft-tissue pinch into an open fracture or severe degloving tear. Speak calmly, block their visual view of the mangled shoe or wound using a jacket or scarf, and hold their knee steady until firefighters arrive.
Phase 3: How firefighters and elevator technicians perform extrication¶
When Fire and Rescue heavy technical squads arrive on scene, they follow a specific mechanical disassembly protocol:
- Main Disconnect Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Firefighters or building engineers open the upper floor access hatch over the drive truss and lock off the main three-phase electrical breaker so the drive motor cannot energize.
- Preventing Step-Chain Rollback: Before unbolting any steps, rescuers verify that the mechanical brake and auxiliary pawl lock are engaged, or wedge timber cribbing between the step chain and truss frame so the weight of passengers or steps on the incline cannot cause the staircase to roll backward fractionally as pressure is released.
- Hydraulic Spreading or Step Removal: Using compact hydraulic spreaders (Jaws of Life), pneumatic high-pressure lifting airbags placed between the step body and the opposite side skirt, or T-handle Allen wrenches to unbolt the individual aluminum step tread from its carrier axle, rescuers widen the 4-millimeter skirt gap to 50 millimeters (2 inches), allowing the trapped foot (still inside the remnant of the shoe) to be lifted straight out without secondary shearing.
First aid for escalator trauma: degloving, amputations, and severe lacerations¶
Escalator accidents produce three severe trauma patterns caused by the grooved aluminum step risers and the serrated comb plate teeth: deep parallel rake lacerations, soft-tissue degloving, and digital (toe or finger) amputations.

1. Urrats zerradunen urraduraren odoljario larria kontrolatzea¶
Aluminio fundiziozko eskailera mekanikoen 90 graduko ertz zorrotzek gazta-arrailaren antzera jokatzen dute pertsona bat mugitzen den eskailera batetik erortzen denean, eta sarritan ibilbide paralelo sakonak mozten dituzte shin, belaun, besaurre eta larruazalean.
- Sakatu gasa garbiz edo tolestutako kotoizko alkandora garbi bat zuzenean odola duen zauriaren gainean, bi eskuak erabiliz. Ikusi gure gida odoljario larria hemorragia-protokolo osoetarako.
- Eskailera mekanikoen zirrikituak kate industrialeko koipe, karbono hauts eta kaleko zikinkeriaz estalita daudenez, ez saiatu eszenako zauri sakonetatik koipea kentzen; arreta zorrotza odol-galera geldiarazteko eta ospitaleko trauma zirujauek anestesiapean ehuna ureztatzen eta desbridatzen uztean.
- Beheko hanka edo besaurreko arteria nagusi bat mozten bada eta odol gorri distiratsua isurtzen jarraitzen badu presio zuzeneko apaingarrien bidez, aplikatu haize-tornikete komertzial bat 5 eta 8 zentimetro (2 eta 3 hazbete) zauriaren gainetik (inoiz ez zuzenean belauneko edo ukondoen artikulazioaren gainean) eta idatzi aplikazioaren une zehatza biktimaren kopetan.
2. Degloving lesioak kudeatzea (larruazaleko eta larruazalpeko ehunen abultsioa)¶
Gomazko oinetako bat edo oin biluzi bat mugitzen den urratsaren eta geldirik dagoen gona artean marrazten denean, zizaila indarrak maiz kentzen du azala eta azpiko gantz-geruza muskulu-faszia eta tendoi sakonagoetatik, eskularru estu bat kentzea bezala.
- Entsitako azalaren milimetro bakoitza gorde: azala azala atzerantz zuritu baina oraindik ehun-zubi batek (pedikulua) atxikita badago, ez ezazu inoiz moztu edo atzerantz tolestu. Jarri astiro-astiro azala ehun gordinaren ohearen gainean bere lerrokatze anatomiko arruntean, pedikuluko odol-hodiak kink ez daitezen.
- Gasa hezetutako esterilaz estali: Jarri gaza esterilarekin gazi hezetuta (edo garbitu edateko botilako ur garbiarekin hezetutako apaingarriak) astiro-astiro, kendutako eremuaren gainean, eta ondoren, kanpoko estalki lehor solte bat jarri lurrunketa hoztea eta ehuna lehortzea ekiditeko.
- Inmobilizatu eta mantendu neutral: oina edo orkatila mekanismoaren barruan konprimituta egon bada 15 minutu baino gehiagoz, begiratu birrintzeko lesioa eta konpartimendu sindromea eta gorputz-adarra bihotzaren mailan eusten.
3. Anputatutako behatzak edo atzamarrak birlandaketa mikrokirurgikorako gordetzea¶
Behatzak edo behatzak orraziaren plakak guztiz moztuta baditu:
- Tratatu pazientea lehenik, anputatutako zatia bigarrena: Jantzi odoljarioa gasa esterila handiarekin eta presio zuzen irmoarekin.
- Inoiz ez sartu zure eskua eskailera mekanikoen orraziaren plakaren barruan moztutako digitu bat berreskuratzeko: Esan iristen diren suhiltzaileei zifra bat itzultzeko zartaginaren barruan dagoela, ikuskapen-zolako plaka segurtasunez desblokeatu ahal izateko energia blokeatu ondoren.
- Jarraitu hiru geruza hotzean kontserbatzeko metodoa:
- Garbitu astiro-astiro zikinkeria solte gordina anputatutako zatitik gatz esterilarekin edo botilako ur garbiarekin (inoiz ez garbitu edo erabili xaboi edo alkohol antiseptikoarekin).
- Itzulbi ezazu zifra gaza antzu geruza batean gaziarekin edo ur garbiarekin arinki hezetuta.
- Zigilatu zigilua zip-gaineko plastikozko poltsa garbi, lehor eta estanko baten barruan.
- Jarri plastikozko poltsa zigilatu hori izotz birrindua eta ur nahasketa batekin betetako bigarren ontzi edo poltsa baten barruan. Inoiz ez jarri moztutako hatza edo behatza zuzenean izotz hutsean edo izotz lehorrean, izozte zuzenak zelulen horma mikrobaskularrak suntsitzen baititu eta berriro kirurgia ezinezkoa baita.
Eskailera mekanikoak erortzearen eta truss-hobia erortzearen arrisku katastrofikoa¶
Oinetako harrapaketarekin alderatuta arraroak diren arren, egitura-urratsen hutsegiteek eta zoru-plaken kolapsoak eskailera mekanikoen istripurik hilgarrienak dira. Mugitzen diren aluminiozko eskaileren begizta mehearen azpian altzairuzko aska sakon eta kobazulo bat dago (truss) eta goiko eta beheko lurreratzeetan motor eragile nagusia, zezen-engranajeak, urrats-itzulerako kateak eta ardatz birakariak dituena.
- Urrats-katearen blokeo baten abisu-seinaleak ("ihesbideko urratsak" edo zirkulazio-urratsak): eskaileratik hurbiltzen den metalezko zartada, kolpe erritmiko edo garrasika soinu ozen bat entzuten baduzu, edo lurreratzeko ertzean gora okertzen ari den urratsa ikusten baduzu, **ez zapaldu eskailera mekanikoetara. Dagoeneko eskaileran bazaude urratsak akordeoi bat bezala lurreratzen eta pilatzen hasten direnean, hartu bi eskudelak berehala, tira oinak eskaileraren ondoan dagoen plastikozko/metalezko alboko estalkira nahiko estua bada, edo alboko barandaren gainetik aldameneko eskailera finkora ondo kokatuz gero.
- Inoiz ez zapaldu mantentze-barrikada horia geldirik dagoen eskailera mekaniko batera: mekanikariek aluminiozko bizpahiru eskailera kentzen dituztenean eskailera mekaniko bati zerbitzua emateko, 1,5 metroko (5 oineko) zulo bertikal aharrausi bat irekitzen da zuzenean beheko altzairuzko engranaje-zuloan. Are okerragoa dena, disko-balazta nagusia mekanikoki askatzen denean mantentze-lanetarako, geldirik dagoen eskailera mekaniko bati marruskaduraz soilik eusten zaio. Joan-etorri talde batek barrikada bati jaramonik egiten ez badiote eta geldirik dauden eskaileretara joaten badira ohiko eskailera gisa erabiltzeko, beheranzko grabitate-pisu konbinatuak marruskadura estatikoa gaindi dezake eta metalezko eskailera osoa azkar bizkortzea alderantziz (eskailera mekanikoen norabidea itzultzea), dozenaka pertsona pila batera isurtzen ditu beheko lurretara edo mantentze-hobi ireki batean.
Prebentzioa: eragin handiko 6 eskailera mekanikoko segurtasun arau familientzat¶
Eskailera mekanikoen eta pasabide mugikorren lesioak saihesteko ohitura zorrotzak behar dira umeekin, ekipajearekin edo mugikortasunerako euskarriekin ibiltzean:
- Zutik perimetro horiko muga-lerroen barruan: eskailera mekanikoen eskailera modernoek plastiko hori distiratsuak edo margotutako muga-lerroak dituzte urrats bakoitzaren lau ertzetan. Prestatu haurrak bi oinak zorrozki koadro horiaren barruko pausoaren erdian jar ditzaten, gomazko oinetako bigunak eta zapitxoak gutxienez 5 zentimetro (2 hazbete) urrunduz geldirik dauden alboko gona hormatik.
- Inoiz ez eraman haur-kotxerik, kotxe-aulkirik, gurpil-aulkirik edo lau gurpileko ekipaje-gurdirik eskailera mekaniko batera: angeludun eskailera mekanikoko gurpil batek atzeko gurpilak pauso mugikor batean pausatzen ditu aurreko gurpilak airean zintzilik dauden bitartean edo goiko eskaileran angelu handi batean atseden hartzen dituen bitartean. Eskailerak goiko edo beheko lurreratzean berdindu bezain laster, kotxetxoak atzerantz okertzen du edo haurra aurre-aurretik behera botatzen du aluminiozko ohol zintzoetatik behera, edo aurrealdeko gurpil txikiak orrazi-plaken zirrikituan sartzen dira zuzenean. Hartu beti igogailua gurpil-aulkia edo ekipaje-gurdi astuna bultzatzean.
- Inoiz ez utzi maskotak eskailera mekanikoen eskaileretan zuzenean ibiltzea: txakurraren oin-oinek, azazkalak eta ileek ez dute babes zurrunik eta 3 milimetroko orrazi-plakaren hortzetara zuzenean sartzen dira irteerako lurreratzetik, eta hanka anitzeko anputazio izugarriak eragiten dituzte. Eraman beti txakur txikiak besoetan eskailera mekaniko batean, edo hartu eskailerak edo igogailua txakur ertain eta handiekin.
- Eutsi umeei eskuak eta egin ezazu zapaldu (ez irristatu) orraziaren plaka: Inoiz ez utzi haur txikiak eskailera mekanikoko eskaileretan esertzen, beheko barandaren sarrerako eskuilatik gertu jolasten edo gomazko oinetakoak azken orraziko plakatik "eskiatzen". Irakatsi oina gora altxatzen eta metalezko orraziko hortzen gainetik zapaltzen zoru sendoan.
- Bildu arropa luzeak eta egiaztatu oinetako lokarriak igo aurretik: sarrerako lurrera igo baino lehen, begiratu behera bi oinetako lokarriak korapilo bikoitzak direla egiaztatzeko eta altxatu lurrerako luzera duten soineko, abaya, sari, beroki edo zapi gutxienez 10 zentimetro (4 hazbete) oinetakoen gainetik.
- Segi aurrera berehala lurretik irtetean: Inoiz ez gelditu eskailera mekaniko edo aireportuko pasabide baten berehalako irteeran zure telefonoa egiaztatzeko edo ateen seinaleak bilatzeko. Makinak minutuko 90 eta 120 bidaiari ematen ditu etengabe zure atzetik zuzenean; orraziaren plakan gelditzeak berehalako kate-erreakzio bat eragiten du mugitzen diren metalezko hortzetara.
Hartu lehen sorospenen ikastaroa
Lehen sorospenak eta trauma odoljarioak kontrolatzeko ikastaro praktiko bat egiteak (adibidez, Stop the Bleed, Gurutze Gorria edo San Juan Anbulantzia prestakuntza) konfiantza praktikoa ematen dizu presio zuzena aplikatzeko, anputazioak kudeatzeko eta segundoak zenbatzen direnean torniketa bat erabiltzeko.
Maiz egiten diren galderak¶
Where is the emergency stop button located on an escalator?
Every code-compliant escalator and moving walkway has at least two bright red Emergency Stop buttons, one at the top landing and one at the bottom landing. Look at the curved end of the balustrade wall (typically on the right-hand side as you face the steps), either 15 to 45 centimeters (6 to 18 inches) above the floor at ankle-to-knee height or recessed into the stainless-steel inner deck trim right under the curved nose of the moving handrail. If a clear plastic cover is over the button, lift the cover (ignore any local warning beep) and press the red button firmly until the stairs stop.
Why are soft foam clogs (like Crocs) and flexible rubber rain boots so easily trapped in escalators?
Unlike hard leather or firm athletic shoes that slide smoothly if they brush against the escalator's stationary side wall, soft EVA foam clogs and thin rubber boots have both a very high coefficient of friction against metal and high compressibility. If a rider stands too close to the side edge of a step and their foam clog rubs against the stationary side skirt, friction grabs the soft foam and pulls the flexible toe of the shoe downward into the 3-to-4-millimeter gap between the moving step and the wall.
What should I do if my shoelace or shoe gets stuck in an escalator while it is still moving?
Do not bend down to try to untie a knotted shoelace with your fingers while the step is moving toward the landing, as your hand can be pulled into the comb plate teeth in a split second. Instead, shout for someone at the landing to hit the red Emergency Stop button and immediately pull your bare or stocking foot straight out of the shoe before the step reaches the top or bottom comb plate. Leaving the shoe behind allows the empty shoe to hit the comb plate impact switch and trip the brake while keeping your foot safe.
Is it safe to take a baby stroller or pushchair on an escalator if an adult holds it tightly?
No, taking a stroller or pushchair onto an escalator is extremely dangerous and is prohibited by transit and building safety codes worldwide. Because escalator steps are only 40 centimeters (16 inches) deep, a stroller's wheelbase spans multiple steps at an unstable tilt, and when the steps flatten out at the top or bottom landing, the small front wheels frequently jam into the comb plate slots or the stroller tips backward down the sharp aluminum treads. Always use an elevator when traveling with a stroller, wheelchair, or rolling cart.
Can I walk down or up a stopped escalator like a regular staircase if it has a maintenance barrier in front of it?
Never cross a yellow maintenance barrier or safety cone onto a stopped escalator. When technicians service an escalator, they often unbolt and remove several aluminum steps, leaving an open 1.5-meter (5-foot) drop straight into the steel drive chains and gears below, or they release the main mechanical brake. Even if all steps look intact, walking onto a stopped escalator with a released brake can cause the heavy step chain to suddenly roll backward under the weight of the crowd like a runaway treadmill.
How should I care for an amputated toe or finger after an escalator accident?
First, control bleeding on the injured foot or hand with firm direct pressure using sterile gauze. Once firefighters safely recover the amputated digit from the escalator, gently rinse away loose dirt with sterile saline or clean bottled water without scrubbing, wrap the digit in damp sterile gauze, seal it inside a dry watertight plastic bag, and place that sealed bag on top of a mixture of crushed ice and water. Never put an amputated finger or toe directly onto bare ice, as frostbite destroys the tiny blood vessels needed for surgical reattachment.
