| 5. Direct Strike & Blunt Barotrauma | 3% မှ 5% | The main lightning channel connects directly to the victim or their held gear, OR the explosive supersonic shockwave of thunder (barotrauma) at point-blank range ruptures eardrums, contuses lungs, or throws the victim off a cliff or talus slope. | Descend early; cover ears with hands during the lightning crouch; anchor yourself with a nylon rope if crouching on a narrow ledge where a muscle spasm or shockwave could throw you off the mountain. |
Phase 2: Surviving an alpine ridge, summit, or technical rock climb¶
In high-altitude mountain ranges (such as the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, European Alps, Andes, or Australian Alps), summer heating builds convective cumulonimbus clouds rapidly between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Backcountry mountaineers call the rule "Summits by Noon, Down by One", meaning you should be turning around and descending from exposed alpine terrain before midday if towering cumulus (cumulus congestus) clouds begin building vertically like cauliflower towers or developing a flat anvil top.
Step-by-step alpine ridgeline escape protocol¶
Step 1: Identify the safest immediate micro-terrain¶
When thunder rumbles or lightning flashes while you are above treeline (in the alpine zone), look around you and rank your descent options:
- Best Option (Subalpine Dense Uniform Forest): Descend below treeline into a dense stand of trees of uniform, shorter height located in a valley, basin, or depression. Avoid the single tallest giant tree in the stand; position yourself evenly spaced among groups of smaller trees.
- Second Best Option (Broad Bowl, Talus Basin, or Leeward Slope 30 to 60 Meters Below the Crest): If treeline is 2 hours below you, you do not have to reach trees to drastically reduce your strike probability. Simply descending 30 to 60 meters (100 to 200 feet) vertically down the slope off the sharp ridge crest or summit pyramid takes you out of the primary upward-streamer zone, because the ridge crest above you acts as a partial Cone of Protection.

အဆင့် 2- insulating ဂီယာတွင် "Lightning Crouch" ကိုလုပ်ဆောင်ပါ။¶
If electrostatic signs appear or strikes are hitting the mountain around you and you must stop moving:
- Throw down dry insulation: Pull out your closed-cell foam sleeping pad (such as a Therm-a-Rest Z Lite), a dry coiled nylon climbing rope, or your backpack (ONLY if it has no internal/external metal frame stays, or after sliding the aluminum stays out) and place it on dry ground. The thicker the dry air/foam layer between the soles of your boots and the wet rock, the higher the electrical breakdown resistance against ground current.
- Squat or sit compactly: Balance on the balls of your feet on top of the pad with your heels and ankles pressed together. If muscle exhaustion makes squatting for 20 minutes impossible, sit tightly on top of a thick folded foam pad and frameless pack with your knees pulled up to your chest and your feet resting together on the pad, never let your feet, hands, or buttocks touch the bare ground off the pad.
- Never lie flat on the ground: Lying prone or supine creates a 1.8-meter (6-foot) electrical bridge across the ground surface, guaranteeing that any ground current passing within 25 meters will travel straight through your heart and brain.
- Protect your senses: Clasp your hands over your ears to prevent tympanic membrane (eardrum) rupture from point-blank thunder shockwaves, and close your eyes to prevent temporary flash blindness (photokeratitis) from intense UV/visible flashes.
Step 3: Special triage for Technical Rock Climbers and Via Ferrata users¶
Being roped up halfway up a 300-meter (1,000-foot) rock wall or clipped into a steel via ferrata cable when a storm hits requires decisive action:
- On a Via Ferrata (Iron Way) or Cable Route (e.g., Half Dome, Dolomites): A continuous steel cable bolted down a mountain ridge is a literal lightning rod that conducts a strike occurring 500 meters away at the summit straight through every climber clipped into the cable. If you can scramble off the cable route onto a broad ledge before the storm hits, unclip from the steel cable, move at least 2 meters (6.5 feet) away from the cable and iron rungs, and anchor yourself to a natural rock horn or non-cable nylon sling so a shockwave cannot knock you off the ledge.
- On a Multi-Pitch Rock Climb: If you cannot rappel to the ground before strikes begin, establish a bombproof belay on the widest dry ledge available (avoiding wet chimneys and dihedral corners where water runs). Do not stand unanchored on a narrow ledge: even a weak ground current causes violent involuntary tetanic muscle contractions that will launch an unanchored climber off the cliff. Tie yourself in short with your dry dynamic nylon climbing rope (dry nylon is an electrical insulator; wet rope conducts current, though less than steel cable), move your metal cam/nut rack 3 meters away to a separate gear anchor if possible, and sit on your pack or coiled dry rope rope tail about 1.5 meters (5 feet) away from the main vertical wall if the ledge permits.
Step 4: Should you stay inside a backpacking tent during a lightning storm?¶
A backpacking tent offers ZERO protection from lightning. In fact, aluminum or carbon-fiber tent poles act as miniature lightning rods on an exposed campsite, and pitched inside a tent, hikers usually lie flat on the floor with their heads and feet inches from the grounded metal pole tips.
- If your tent is pitched in an exposed alpine basin above treeline or on a ridge and a severe lightning storm moves directly overhead, put on your rain gear, grab your foam sleeping pad, exit the tent, move at least 15 meters (50 feet) away from the tent into a low depression, and assume the lightning crouch on your pad.
- If your tent is already pitched properly deep inside a dense, uniform forest below treeline, away from the tallest isolated trees and away from water, the surrounding forest canopy provides far taller upward-streamer paths than your 1.2-meter (4-foot) tent, but you should still sit upright on your foam sleeping pad in the center of the tent floor (away from the metal poles and tent walls) rather than lying flat head-to-pole until the active core passes.
Phase 3: Surviving lightning on open water (Kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and small boats)¶
Open water is mathematically as dangerous as an alpine summit. Because a lake, bay, or ocean is completely flat, a paddler sitting in a kayak, standing on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), or sitting in an open aluminum fishing skiff is the single highest vertical protrusion for kilometers around, and their lower body rests inches from a massive conductive sheet of water.
Step 1: The 5-Minute Shore Sprint vs. Open-Water Hunker Decision¶
As soon as you see darkening cumulus clouds, feel a sudden gust front (outflow boundary drop in temperature), or hear distant thunder:
- If shore is within 5 to 10 minutes of hard paddling/motoring: Head straight for the nearest land immediately, even if it is an unplanned beach or private dock. Once you hit shore, do not linger at the water's edge (lightning strikes at the waterline travel along the wet sand and water surface). Haul your boat 30 meters (100 feet) inland, walk past the first tall shoreline trees into lower uniform brush or an enclosed building/vehicle, and crouch on your life jacket (PFD).
- If you are caught more than 10 minutes from shore and lightning is already striking the water: Do not exhaust yourself paddling upright in the middle of an active strike zone. Transition immediately to the Open-Water Survival Protocol.

Cut the trolling motor and haul up the anchor if anchored in open water (or leave anchor line only if needed to avoid drifting onto rocks, without touching the wet rode/chain). Put on your Life Jacket (PFD) immediately (so you float face-up if knocked unconscious by a strike). Crouch low in the center of the boat on top of a fiberglass cooler, dry foam boat cushion, or life jacket, keeping away from the console steering wheel, throttle cables, battery terminals, and metal gunwales. | Never hold a graphite fishing rod (graphite conducts electricity instantly); never stand at the bow trolling motor; never touch two metal parts of the boat simultaneously. |
| Cabin Cruiser or Sailboat with a Mast | A sailboat's aluminum mast casts a roughly 45-degree Cone of Protection over the hull only if the mast is properly grounded to the keel/water via heavy-gauge bonding cables (or an emergency jumper cable clipped to a shroud and trailed in the water, attach this before the storm arrives, never during strikes). Go below deck into the center of the cabin. Stay completely away from the mast compression post, chainplates, stainless steel shrouds/stays, marine VHF radio microphone, galley sink faucets, and engine block. | Even in a grounded sailboat, a direct strike to the mast often blows out all 12V marine electronics (GPS, VHF, depth sounder) and can blow a hole through an ungrounded thru-hull fitting, immediately check the bilge for flooding after any strike. |
Freshwater vs. Saltwater lightning physics
Wait to enter the water under any circumstances, and understand how water salinity changes ground current on the surface: - Saltwater (Ocean / Bays): Saltwater is rich in dissolved ions and is a much better electrical conductor than the human body. When lightning strikes the ocean, current dissipates rapidly across the surface layer and dissipates exponentially within a shorter radius (roughly 10 to 15 meters / 33 to 50 feet), tending to flow around rather than exclusively through a submerged body outside the immediate blast radius. - Freshwater (Mountain Lakes / Rivers): Freshwater has very low mineral conductivity, making your human body (full of salty blood and electrolytes) a FAR better conductor than the surrounding lake water. When lightning strikes a freshwater lake, the electrical current travels much farther through the water seeking a low-resistance path and flows directly through the body of any swimmer or wader within up to 30 to 50 meters (100 to 165 feet), causing instant paralysis and drowning. Never abandon a kayak or boat to get into the water during a lightning storm. Stay dry inside the hull with your PFD buckled on.
အဆင့် 4- မိုးကြိုးပစ်ပြီးနောက် တောကန္တာရ ဆေးဘက်ဆိုင်ရာ စမ်းသပ်မှု ("နောက်ပြန်လှည့်စမ်း")¶
In standard wilderness trauma (such as a rockfall or avalanche with limited rescuers), medics focus on victims who are screaming or bleeding and deprioritize victims with no pulse or respirations. In a lightning strike mass-casualty incident, you must apply the exact opposite rule: REVERSE TRIAGE.
အဘယ်ကြောင့် "Reverse Triage" သည် မိုးကြိုးထိ၍ အသက်များကို ကယ်တင်နိုင်သနည်း။¶
- If a lightning victim is conscious, moaning, or breathing on their own, they have already survived the immediate lethal electrical phase. While they may have painful burns, ruptured eardrums, or temporary paralysis of their legs, they will almost certainly survive without immediate resuscitation.
- If a lightning victim appears completely "dead" (no breathing, no pulse, fixed and dilated pupils, mottled cyanotic skin), they can frequently be brought back to full life if CPR and rescue breathing are started within 60 seconds.
- Why Prolonged Rescue Breathing is critical: A lightning bolt delivers a massive instantaneous direct-current (DC) countershock that depolarizes the entire myocardium (heart muscle) at once, acting like a massive defibrillator, while simultaneously stunning the medullary respiratory center in the brainstem. Very often, the victim's natural cardiac pacemaker (the sinoatrial node) restarts the heartbeat on its own within seconds, but the victim's brainstem remains paralyzed and cannot trigger a breath for 10 to 30 minutes. If nobody breathes for that victim, their blood oxygen plummets and their heart stops a second time from hypoxia (secondary hypoxic cardiac arrest), which is fatal.
Step-by-step post-strike wilderness resuscitation¶
- Assess scene safety and move ONLY if necessary: Touching the victim is 100% safe immediately. If the victim was struck on an exposed ridge crest and lightning is still actively striking overhead, two rescuers can rapidly drag the victim 15 to 30 meters (50 to 100 feet) down off the crest while another rescuer delivers breaths, or crouch low while performing compressions.
- Open the airway and check for breathing and carotid pulse for no more than 10 seconds:
- If there is NO pulse and NO breathing: Begin full CPR immediately at a rate of 100 to 120 chest compressions per minute to a depth of 5 to 6 centimeters (2 to 2.4 inches) in adults, alternating 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths. Unlike urban sudden cardiac arrest where hands-only CPR is sometimes used, rescue breaths are mandatory in lightning arrest because respiratory paralysis is the primary killer.
- If the victim HAS a carotid pulse but is NOT breathing: Perform Rescue Breathing at a rate of 1 breath every 5 to 6 seconds (10 to 12 breaths per minute), watching the chest rise with each breath and re-checking the carotid pulse every 2 minutes. Continue rescue breathing for 30 to 60+ minutes if necessary until the brainstem recovers and spontaneous breathing resumes.
- Do not be fooled by "Fixed and Dilated Pupils" or cold legs: Lightning causes autonomic nervous system dysfunction that routinely makes one or both pupils temporarily fixed and dilated (which normally indicates brain death in other traumas) and causes keraunoparalysis, a temporary vasospasm and neurological stunning of the lower extremities that makes the victim's legs look pale, cold, blue, pulseless, and completely paralyzed. Keraunoparalysis typically resolves on its own within 2 to 24 hours; never assume a victim is dead or has a permanent severed spine based on fixed pupils or cold, paralyzed legs after a lightning strike.
- Check for spinal trauma, burns, and hypothermia:
- Because lightning causes violent muscle contractions or throws hikers onto rocks, maintain manual cervical spine stabilization if the victim fell or struck their head (see ကျောရိုးဒဏ်ရာ)
- Look for entry/exit thermal burns (often near metal zippers, belt buckles, watches, necklace chains, or the soles of the feet) and feather-like reddish skin markings (Lichtenberg figures, which are pathognomonic of lightning strike and fade within 24 to 48 hours). Cool active smoldering clothing and cover true thermal burns with clean dry dressings (see Burns)
- Wrap the victim in dry insulation and a hypothermia wrap immediately (see တော၌အအေးမိခြင်းနှင့်အအေးမိ). Every lightning strike victim requires hospital evaluation with a 12-lead ECG and blood tests for rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown).
မေးလေ့ရှိသောမေးခွန်းများ¶
Does the rubber on my hiking boot soles or trail-running shoes insulate me from a lightning strike?
No. A lightning bolt has just traveled through 2 to 5 kilometers (1 to 3 miles) of insulating atmospheric air driven by 100 million to 1 billion volts. A 1.5-centimeter (0.6-inch) layer of wet, dirty rubber on the bottom of a hiking boot offers negligible resistance to high-voltage ground current. Only a thick layer of dry closed-cell foam (such as a folded sleeping pad) combined with a dry frameless backpack and keeping your heels tightly together meaningfully reduces step-potential current through your legs, just as inside a car, it is the metal Faraday cage of the car body (never the rubber tires) that protects passengers.
If my smartphone, GPS watch, or Garmin inReach is in my pocket, will it attract a lightning strike?
No. Small electronic devices, cell phones, watches, and jewelry do not "attract" lightning or alter the path of a stepped leader descending from kilometers overhead. However, if you are struck by ground current or side flash while wearing metal against your bare skin (such as a metal watchband, necklace, underwire bra, belt buckle, or coins in a pocket), the metal superheats instantaneously and causes deep third-degree contact burns or melts plastic electronics into your skin. Keep your satellite communicator and phone inside a dry padded pocket of your backpack (not pressed against your chest) so they survive the storm and remain functional to transmit an SOS afterward.
Is it true that lightning never strikes the same place twice on a mountain?
That is a dangerous myth. Lightning repeatedly strikes the exact same prominent topographic points, rock pinnacles, and summit towers multiple times during a single thunderstorm cell because those features provide the shortest, highest-field-strength path for upward streamers. Never shelter next to a tree or boulder that was "just struck" assuming it is now safe.
How long after the last flash of lightning or clap of thunder must I wait before climbing back up onto an exposed ridge or launching my kayak?
Follow the official National Weather Service and Wilderness Medical Society 30/30 Rule: after witnessing the final flash of lightning or hearing the final clap of thunder, wait a full 30 minutes before leaving your lower-elevation shelter to re-ascend an exposed ridge or paddle back out onto open water. Over half of all fatal lightning strikes occur after the heavy rain shaft has passed, because "bolts from the blue" (positive cloud-to-ground strikes originating from the high upper anvil of the storm) routinely leap horizontally 10 to 16 kilometers (6 to 10 miles) behind the trailing edge of a departing thunderstorm into clear blue sky.
What should I do if I am riding a mountain bike or horse when caught in lightning on an open trail?
If riding a mountain bike (especially a carbon-fiber or aluminum frame) on an exposed ridge or open prairie, dismount immediately, lay the bike flat on the ground at least 15 to 30 meters (50 to 100 feet) away from you, and adopt the lightning crouch in a low depression. If riding a horse or leading pack stock, dismount immediately and tie or hobble the animals in a low stand of uniform trees at least 30 meters (100 feet) away from where you crouch. Horses and mules have a long four-legged wheelbase (1.5 to 2 meters / 5 to 6.5 feet between front and rear hooves), making them extraordinarily vulnerable to fatal step-potential ground currents even from distant strikes.
Where can I learn hands-on wilderness CPR and backcountry lightning triage?
Reading a guide is no substitute for muscle memory during an alpine emergency. Take a hands-on CPR and First Aid course from the American Red Cross, St John Ambulance, the Resuscitation Council UK, or a certified Wilderness First Aid (WFA) / Wilderness First Responder (WFR) provider such as NOLS Wilderness Medicine or Wilderness Medical Associates so you can practice prolonged rescue breathing and backcountry patient packaging under realistic conditions.
