| 3. 24-timmars uttagsautomat i glas | Two-person distraction teams wait until you type your 4-digit PIN (when the ATM is unlocked and ready to dispense up to $800). A person standing outside the glass door who does not have a bank card in their hand or waits until after you type your PIN to walk in - Someone standing inside the vestibule pretending to talk on a phone without using a machine |
- Cup your non-dominant hand completely over the PIN keypad (defeats both shoulder-surfers and overhead pinhole cameras) - If anyone speaks to you or drops money behind you at an ATM, press CANCEL and cover the card slot with your hand before turning your head |
Step-by-step: The Parking Garage Safe Entry & Exit Protocol¶
1. How you park in the daytime dictates your safety at night¶
2. Reprogram your vehicle's "Two-Stage Unlock" setting today¶
On many vehicles, pressing the "Unlock" button on the key fob once unlocks all four doors and the tailgate simultaneously, turning on the interior lights and inviting an attacker crouching on the passenger side of your car to pull the front-passenger or rear door open the exact instant you climb into the driver's seat. - Go into your vehicle's Dashboard Infotainment Settings -> Vehicle -> Power Door Locks -> Remote Unlock (or check your owner's manual key-fob button combination) and set it to "Driver's Door Only on First Press." Now, pressing Unlock once opens only your door while keeping the other three doors bolted tight.
3. Defeating the "Windshield Flyer / Bottle in the Wheel Well" Carjacking Ruse¶
A widespread parking-lot ambush tactic used across North America, Europe, Latin America, and South Africa works like this: 1. While you are inside a shopping mall or gym, a criminal slips a fake parking ticket, a $20 bill, a business flyer, or an old T-shirt under your rear windshield wiper blade (or wedges an empty crinkly plastic water bottle between your front-right tire and the fender liner). 2. You return to your car, get in, lock the doors, start the engine, and shift into Reverse. 3. Looking in your rearview mirror, you notice the paper blocking your rear window (or you hear a loud crunch-crunch from the plastic bottle rubbing your right tire). 4. Annoyed, you shift back into Park, leave the engine running and your purse/phone on the seat, open your driver's door, and walk to the back of the car to pull the paper off the glass. 5. The attacker steps out from behind the adjacent SUV, jumps into your running, unlocked driver's seat, and drives away (or confronts you at the rear bumper while you are trapped outside your car).
The Golden Rule: If you see a flyer, shirt, cardboard, or note on your front or rear windshield after you get inside your car, or hear a strange plastic scraping noise from a wheel well in a parking lot, NEVER get back out of your car inside the parking lot. Keep your doors locked and drive all the way out of the parking garage into a busy, well-lit street or service station miles away before stopping to remove it.
Navigating enclosed stairwells and elevators safely¶
When moving vertically between floors in a parking structure, apartment building, hotel, or office tower, enclosed stairwells and elevators require distinct defensive positioning:
In an Enclosed Concrete Stairwell:¶
- The "Handle Check" Before Letting the Fire Door Close:
- In many modern high-rise buildings and parking garages, fire doors inside the stairwell are equipped with one-way security locks to prevent non-residents from climbing from the garage into upper office or residential floors. Once the heavy steel door clicks shut behind you, the inside stairwell handle will not turn, forcing you to walk all the way down (sometimes 6 to 15 flights) to the ground floor exit.
- Whenever you push open a stairwell door, keep one foot wedged against the open door and try turning the inside stairwell handle before letting go of the door. If the inside handle is locked rigid and the stairwell feels deserted or unsafe, step right back out onto your floor and wait for the elevator.
- Walk on the Outside Radius of Stair Turns and Look Up the Center Well:
- Concrete scissor-stairs wrap around a narrow central gap in classic 180-degree hairpins.
- As you approach each landing turn, take the wide outside path (closest to the outer wall rather than hugging the tight inside corner post) and glance up into the overhead metal pipe reflections or through the central handrail gap. Walking the wide outside radius gives you an extra 2 meters (6 feet) of sightline and reaction distance around blind corners.
- Why you should carry a 130-Decibel Personal Safety Alarm clipped to your keychain or strap in stairwells:
- Because concrete stairwells are built with smooth, unpainted cinderblock and steel surfaces, pulling the pin on a 130-decibel electronic personal siren inside an enclosed stairwell creates a painful, deafening acoustic resonance that bounces up and down all 10 stories of the shaft simultaneously, alerting everyone on adjacent floors while disorienting an aggressor instantly.
In a Parking Garage or Apartment Elevator:¶
- Stand at the Front Corner Directly Beside the Control Panel (Never in the Back Center):
- Standing right next to the floor buttons gives you two immediate advantages: you sit in the blind spot rather than presenting your back to someone standing by the door, and you can immediately press every floor button on the panel (or the Door Open and Alarm button) if a suspicious passenger behaves aggressively.
- Wait for the other person to select their floor button first (or step off before the doors close):
- If you are alone in a parking garage elevator lobby and a stranger who makes you uneasy walks in behind you and stands silently without pressing a floor button (waiting to see which residential floor you live on), do not press your floor button. Simply glance at your phone as if you forgot something in your car, say "Oh, I left my umbrella in the trunk," and step right back off the elevator before the doors close. Never let polite social awkwardness override your safety instincts.
ATM Vestibule Safety: defeating skimmers, glue traps, and distraction robberies¶
If you must withdraw cash from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), choose a machine located inside a staffed supermarket, pharmacy, or bank branch lobby during daytime hours whenever possible. If you use a street-facing or vestibule ATM:
- Pull firmly on the plastic Card Reader Bezel before inserting your card (Or use Tap-to-Pay NFC):
- Criminal "skimming" crews glue a hollow 3D-printed plastic card reader directly over the bank's real card slot (or insert a paperclip-thin "shimmer" chip inside the slot) paired with a tiny pinhole camera hidden behind a fake brochure holder above the screen to record your fingers typing your PIN.
- Better yet, use Contactless NFC (Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Tap Card) at the ATM: Almost all modern bank ATMs feature a contactless tap symbol next to the screen. Tapping your phone or card against the NFC reader opens your account without ever inserting your physical plastic card into the mechanical slot, making card-trapping and magnetic-stripe skimming 100 percent impossible.
- What to do if the ATM "eats" your card and a helpful stranger immediately walks up ("The Lebanese Loop / Glue Trap Scam"):
- In this widespread ATM ambush, criminals insert a thin sleeve of X-ray film or a drop of adhesive into the card slot so your debit card gets stuck inside the machine when you try to end your session.
- Ten seconds later, a well-dressed, friendly "next customer in line" steps into the vestibule and says: "Oh, that happened to me yesterday. You just have to hold down the Enter button and re-type your PIN twice while pulling on the card edge."
- Never type your PIN in front of a stranger: That "helpful bystander" is the criminal who jammed the slot, watching over your shoulder to memorize your PIN so they can pull your stuck card out with tweezers the instant you give up and walk away.
- What to do instead: Stay standing directly in front of the ATM screen (do not walk away from the machine), open your banking mobile app on your phone right there, and tap "Lock / Freeze Card" in your bank app (or call the 24-hour fraud number on the ATM screen) before leaving the vestibule.
Apartment mailrooms, package lockers, and subterranean trash rooms¶
Beyond parking decks and ATMs, residential apartment buildings and condominium towers contain three everyday transitional rooms where residents frequently drop their guard completely: enclosed lobby mailrooms, basement package-locker rooms, and underground dumpster or laundry rooms.
Apply these four habits whenever entering an enclosed residential common area:
- Never walk into a basement trash chute room, bike storage cage, or laundry room at night without your phone and key fob:
- Many apartment residents walk down to the basement laundry room or garage trash bin in slippers carrying a heavy laundry basket with both hands while leaving their apartment door unlocked and their phone upstairs.
- Always bring your mobile phone, key fob, and personal alarm in your pocket, and verify that the corridor door behind you does not lock automatically without a keycard.
- Prop open solid-door basement storage or trash rooms while inside:
- If your building's package room, bike storage room, or trash room sits behind a windowless steel fire door in the basement garage, kick the rubber doorstop down (or place a heavy box against the door) while you are inside for 60 seconds retrieving your package so you are never closed inside a soundproof room with a stranger who follows you in.
- Avoid sorting mail or opening cardboard boxes inside the lobby vestibule:
- When picking up mail or packages from an apartment vestibule that faces the public sidewalk, grab your mail stack in one motion and carry it behind the locked inner security door (or up to your apartment) before standing still to read letters or slice open parcels. Standing focused on opening mail inside an unlocked front vestibule gives street-level tailgaters the exact 10 seconds they need to pull the outer door open and slip past the inner security door behind you.
- Defeat "Tailgating" (Piggybacking) at the apartment garage gate and pedestrian lobby door without confrontation:
- When you badge into a secure apartment lobby door or drive through a rising parking garage gate, criminals without a key fob frequently walk right up behind your shoulder expecting you to hold the door open out of politeness.
- Never physically block or argue with a tailgater yourself (which can trigger an immediate confrontation in an enclosed doorway). Instead, if an unfamiliar person tries to tailgate you through a pedestrian door, step back outside before unlocking the door and pretend to take a phone call or check your mailbox until they walk away; if a car tailgates your vehicle through the automated garage gate, do not park in your space: keep driving right back out the exit ramp (or stop by the staffed concierge desk) and report the unauthorized vehicle's license plate to building security or police immediately.
Vanliga frågor¶
What should I do if I return to my car in a parking garage and a large panel van is parked tightly next to my driver's side door?¶
If your car is parked in an isolated or partially empty area of a garage and a high-profile cargo van, minivan with sliding doors, or occupied vehicle with dark-tinted windows is parked right against your driver's side door, **never walk between the two vehicles to unlock your driver's door**. Stepping into that narrow 60-centimeter (2-foot) canyon between a tall van and your car hides you completely from security cameras and passersby. Instead, either return immediately to the building lobby and ask security to walk out with you, OR, if the garage is well-lit and no one is inside or around the adjacent van, enter your car through the **front passenger-side door**, lock all doors immediately, climb over the center console into the driver's seat, and drive away.
If I think someone is following me in a parking garage, should I press the red "Panic" button on my car key fob?¶
Yes, pressing and holding the red **Panic / Horn Alarm button** on your car key fob for 3 seconds sets off a continuous 110-decibel horn blast and flashing headlights that echoes through the entire concrete parking structure, drawing every set of eyes and security cameras to your row. However, remember one tactical rule: **while your car alarm is honking to scare off the follower, walk briskly toward the nearest staffed building entrance, elevator lobby, or security booth rather than walking isolated toward your own flashing car** if the person is standing near your vehicle.
Why do police say you should never sit inside your parked car looking at your phone after getting in?¶
When you sit inside a parked car with your head bowed down looking at a glowing smartphone screen, two things happen: first, your peripheral vision and hearing drop to near zero (especially if your car engine or air conditioner is running), allowing someone to walk up along your rear quarter-panel blind spot completely unnoticed; and second, at night, your phone screen illuminates your face like a spotlight inside a fishbowl while making it impossible for your eyes to see out into the dark garage. Make it a strict lifetime habit: **Get in -> Lock doors immediately -> Start engine -> Pull out of the parking garage**, and wait until you reach your final safe destination to check messages.
What should I do if an armed robber demands my car keys while I am loading groceries into my trunk?¶
Your vehicle is insured metal and plastic; your life is irreplaceable. If an armed carjacker confronts you at your open trunk or car door, **do not argue and do not fight over the vehicle**: drop the grocery bags, toss your car keys 2 to 3 meters (6 to 10 feet) toward or past the attacker (so their eyes and hands go to the keys rather than to you), put your hands up to show you are not a threat, and move backward away from the car immediately. If your **child or baby is buckled inside a car seat in the backseat**, point and state calmly and loudly in a clear 5-word sentence: *"My baby is in the backseat, I am unbuckling my child right now,"* and pull the entire infant carrier or child out with you before stepping back.
How can I tell if an ATM card slot has a credit card skimmer attached to it?¶
Before inserting a bank card into any ATM or gas pump, perform a 3-second physical check: first, **grab the plastic card-reader housing with your fingers and wiggle/pull on it firmly** (bank-installed card readers are bolted rigidly inside the steel chassis and will never budge, whereas criminal overlay skimmers are held on with double-sided tape and will wiggle or pop off in your hand); second, look for alignment mismatches where the plastic bezel covers up flashing green LED arrows or looks thicker/differently colored than neighboring ATMs; and third, **always cover your hand completely with your other palm when typing your 4-digit PIN**, because without your PIN code, a skimmed magnetic stripe cannot be used to withdraw cash from an ATM.
Note
If you or someone nearby suffers a physical injury, pepper-spray exposure, or acute panic attack during a parking garage or stairwell incident, reach a locked, staffed lobby first before rendering aid and calling emergency services. Taking a hands-on first aid course from the Red Cross, St John Ambulance, or a local community provider gives you the skills to treat trauma and shock while waiting for paramedics.
