Part 1: High-wind glazing shatter, poly film tears, and structural uplift¶
When a severe thunderstorm, derecho, tornado, or winter gale strikes a greenhouse, structural survival depends on aerodynamic pressure management and glazing material behavior.
Why greenhouses explode outward in high winds (the parachute effect)¶
High winds destroy greenhouses through aerodynamic uplift combined with internal stagnation pressure:
- External Bernoulli lift: Wind accelerating over a curved hoop house or peaked gable roof creates a low-pressure suction zone over the roof crest and leeward slope, pulling glazing upward with forces exceeding 70 to 120 kilograms per square meter (15 to 25 pounds per square foot).
- Internal pressurization: If a windward door latches poorly, a louver shatters, or the windward polyethylene skirt pulls out of its baseboard channel, wind rams into the interior and spikes internal pressure. Upward internal pressure combined with external aerodynamic suction rips aluminum glazing bars apart, pops polycarbonate panels out of their H-channels, or peels polyethylene film off the steel hoops.
Emergency aerodynamic stabilization during a storm¶
- Lock down the windward side: If a door on the windward endwall is bowing inward, park a utility vehicle, tractor, or stack of sandbags against the outside of the door frame so it cannot burst open.
- Depressurize the structure using leeward suction: Keep windward vents 100 percent closed, and open the leeward (downwind) vent by 2 to 5 centimeters (1 to 2 inches). Wind rushing past the cracked downwind vent draws air out of the greenhouse (the Venturi effect), creating negative internal pressure that sucks polyethylene film and polycarbonate panels down against the frame ribs and cuts roof uplift stress by up to 40 percent.
- Throw external wind-tie ropes over a ballooning hoop house: If the polyethylene skin has loosened and is flapping violently, throw 10-millimeter (⅜-inch) nylon or polypropylene ropes or flat polyester cargo straps over the outside of the arch between every second hoop, and anchor them to ground augers or concrete blocks on both sides.
Glazing hazard comparison and emergency breach repair¶
Different greenhouse coverings fail in distinct ways under wind, hail, and snow loads. Tailor your personal protective equipment (PPE) and patching method to your glazing type.
| Glazing Material | Failure Mode in Wind, Hail, or Snow | Immediate Human Hazard | Emergency Patch & Stabilization Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horticultural Float Glass (3 mm / ⅛ in) | Shatters into sharp triangular shards that slide down roof channels or fall inside | Extreme: Deep lacerations to neck, scalp, forearms, and tendons | Evacuate during wind. Knock hanging shards out from outside with a long pole while wearing a hard hat and face shield. Cover openings with 6-mil poly film stapled to 1x2 battens. |
| Tempered Safety Glass (4 mm / 5/32 in) | Breaks into thousands of small pebble-sized cubes across benches and walkways | Moderate: Eye injuries from glass dust; slip hazards; ruined potting media | Sweep benches with a broom and shop vacuum; stretch a UV tarp or 6-mil greenhouse poly over the frame bay and clamp with bar caps. |
| Twin-Wall Polycarbonate (6 to 16 mm) | Sheets bow and pop intact out of H-channels, or hail punctures the top flute skin | Low: Flying panels in high wind can strike workers outdoors | Retrieve panels; slide back into tracks and secure with 19-millimeter (¾-inch) self-tapping screws and 38-millimeter (1.5-inch) neoprene fender washers. Seal hail holes in top flutes with foil or poly tape. |
| Polyethylene Film (6-mil UV poly) | Rips along creases, wear points over steel bows, or pulls out of lock-channel | Low: Whiplash from snapping wiggle-wire springs | Clean and dry the torn margin with isopropyl alcohol; apply 10-centimeter (4-inch) UV polyethylene repair tape on both inside and outside surfaces with rounded corners. |
Step-by-step emergency poly-film and glass-bay skinning in freezing weather¶
Standard duct tape fails within hours on a greenhouse because moisture, UV rays, and freezing temperatures destroy natural rubber adhesives. Use these field-proven methods when patching a blown-out section during a storm:
- The Double-Sided Rounded-Corner Tape Technique (for tears under 1 meter / 3 feet):
- Wipe both sides of the torn polyethylene film with isopropyl alcohol to remove moisture and dust so adhesive bonds in sub-zero air.
- Warm your roll of UV polyethylene greenhouse repair tape inside your jacket pocket so the acrylic adhesive stays tacky.
- Have a helper inside hold flat plywood or cardboard behind the tear while you press overlapping strips of poly tape across the outside of the rip, extending 15 centimeters (6 inches) past both ends.
- Repeat on the inside surface so the two adhesive layers bond through the slit, and trim the four corners into rounded curves so square edges cannot catch wind.
- The Rolled Furring-Strip Batten Splice (for large rips or blown-out glass bays):
- Cut 6-mil clear plastic or spare greenhouse poly 30 centimeters (12 inches) wider than the damaged bay on all four sides.
- Lay the top edge of the plastic over a 19 x 38 millimeter (1 x 2 inch) wooden furring strip, roll the wood strip three full turns into the plastic like a scroll to distribute tension, and drive screws through the batten into the header bar every 30 centimeters (12 inches).
- Pull the plastic drum-tight down the slope and repeat the three-turn batten roll along the bottom sill and rafters.
- Emergency Inflation Blower Triage (for double-layer inflated poly houses):
- Double-layer poly houses use a 50-watt blower to maintain 50 to 75 Pascals (0.2 to 0.3 inches of water column) of static air pressure between the sheets, creating a rigid R-1.7 air pillow.
- If a branch punctures only the outer layer, tape the outer puncture right away so the blower does not pump freezing air into the gap.
- If grid power fails during a windstorm, connect the 50-watt blower to a 12-volt deep-cycle battery via a 150-watt inverter so the roof stays rigid throughout the blackout.
Removing broken glass from plant pots and raised beds safely¶
- Discard open leafy greens beneath a glass break: Never bare-hand weed or harvest lettuce, spinach, or herbs beneath shattered glass, as microscopic slivers wedge inside leaf axils.
- Salvage perennial stock or nursery pots: Wearing Kevlar and nitrile gloves, shake foliage gently over a tarp, then hold a wet/dry shop vacuum 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) above the dry soil surface to suck up the top 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) of contaminated potting mix and glass before top-dressing with fresh media.
Part 2: Winter blizzard heater failure and thermal mass survival¶
Unlike an insulated house (R-19 walls and R-38 ceilings), a single-layer glass or poly greenhouse has an insulation value of R-0.85 to R-0.95, and twin-wall polycarbonate is R-1.5 to R-2.0. When the heater stops in a blizzard, a greenhouse loses its stored air heat in 15 to 45 minutes.
Step 1: Diagnose and restart a locked-out greenhouse heater¶
Check the four most common cold-weather lockout triggers before assuming a heater is broken:
- Propane tank pressure collapse in extreme cold ("tank freeze-up"):
- Liquid propane stops boiling at minus 42 degrees Celsius (minus 44 degrees Fahrenheit), and when a heater draws fuel rapidly at minus 15 to minus 25 degrees Celsius (5 to minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit), evaporative cooling inside a 9-kilogram (20-pound) or 14-kilogram (30-pound) cylinder chills the liquid so fast that pressure drops below the regulator cutoff even when the tank is half full.
- The safe fix: Never use a blowtorch, open flame, or heat gun on a propane tank. Pour warm (not boiling) tap water over the lower half of the frost-covered cylinder, wrap the tank in an insulated blanket (leaving the top valve uncovered), or manifold two or three cylinders in parallel using a brass Y-tee.
- Frost or debris blocking the burner orifice or intake pipe:
- If a pilot holds a flame but the main burner produces a smoky yellow flame (which emits carbon monoxide and ethylene), shut the gas off and clear the orifice and air shutter with compressed air. On direct-vent heaters, verify outside that blowing snow has not plugged the horizontal exhaust or intake pipe.
- Thermocouple dropout:
- Standing-pilot heaters use a copper thermocouple heated by the pilot flame to generate 25 to 30 millivolts that holds the gas valve open. If the pilot goes out when you release the reset button, sand the copper tip lightly with fine emery cloth to remove soot and confirm the pilot flame engulfs the top 1 centimeter (⅜ inch) of the tip.
- Power outage disabling a fan-forced gas unit heater:
- Ceiling-mounted gas unit heaters burn gas for heat, but require 120V/230V AC electricity (300 to 500 watts) to spin their axial fan and energize the 24-volt gas valve. During a blackout, plug the heater's power cord into a portable 1,000-watt lithium power station or an inverter generator parked outdoors at least 6 meters (20 feet) away.
Step 2: Seal convective heat leaks and build an inner low tunnel¶
If the heater cannot be restored, lock down the envelope and partition the air volume within 20 minutes:
- Tape shut intake shutters and exhaust louvers: Tape 6-mil plastic or rigid foam board over the inside of every exhaust fan housing and gravity louver.
- Bank snow against the outside baseboard: Shovel a 30 to 60 centimeter (1 to 2 foot) bank of snow around the outside perimeter skirt. Snow provides R-1 per 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) and stops wind from penetrating underneath the sill plate.
- Create a bench-level "greenhouse-within-a-greenhouse" low tunnel: Heating the upper roof peak wastes 70 percent of your thermal energy. Bend PVC pipes or wire hoops across each bench 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) above the plants, and drape heavyweight spunbond row cover (Agribon AG-50 or AG-70) plus a top layer of 4-mil clear plastic sheeting over the hoops, tucking edges down to the floor so ground warmth rises into the tent. A double-layer inner low tunnel keeps leaf temperatures 5 to 8 degrees Celsius (9 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the outdoor blizzard with zero fuel.
Step 3: Deploy safe emergency heat sources and avoid ethylene crop poisoning¶
Account for two invisible gases when choosing a backup heater: Carbon Monoxide (CO) (lethal to humans) and Ethylene (\(C_2H_4\)) and Sulfur Dioxide (\(SO_2\)) (toxic to plants at microscopic levels).
Warning
Ethylene gas toxicity in unvented greenhouses: When an unvented propane, natural gas, or kerosene heater burns inside a sealed greenhouse with depleted oxygen, it emits 0.1 to 5 parts per million (ppm) of ethylene gas. Even 0.05 to 0.1 ppm of ethylene for 6 hours causes severe injury to tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and orchids: leaves twist downward (epinasty), flower buds and young fruit abort within 48 hours, and growing tips go blind. Always leave at least 6 square centimeters of fresh air vent opening per 1,000 BTU/hr (1 square inch per 1,000 BTU/hr) of unvented burner output so oxygen enters and ethylene escapes.
- Hot-water thermal mass barrels and jerrycans (Zero fumes, 100% plant-safe):
- Water stores 4.184 kilojoules per kilogram per degree Celsius (1 BTU per pound per degree Fahrenheit) of sensible heat, plus 334 kilojoules per kilogram (144 BTU per pound) of latent heat when freezing.
- Fill clean 20-liter (5-gallon) jerrycans or 200-liter (55-gallon) drums with 55 to 60 degrees Celsius (130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit) hot water from a home gas water heater and slide them underneath the low-tunnel bench tents. Four 20-liter jugs of 60 C (140 F) water cooling to 5 C (41 F) release 18,400 kilojoules (17,400 BTUs) of fume-free heat inside your plant tent over 8 to 10 hours.
- Electric propagation heat mats and incandescent C9 bulbs (On backup battery):
- Most plants survive brief air temperatures near 1 to 2 degrees Celsius (34 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit) if their root ball stays at 12 to 15 degrees Celsius (54 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). Plug 20-watt to 45-watt seedling heat mats or strings of 7-watt incandescent C9 holiday bulbs (never LED bulbs) under the inner row-cover tent into a portable power station, keeping bulbs clear of plastic and foliage.
- Vented 12V Diesel Air Parking Heaters:

Fakavavevave kemikale 'o e 'osikena mo e Haitoloseni Pelokisaiti (\(H_2O_2\))¶
If you cannot lower the water level in a large recirculating reservoir and your battery air pumps are dead, you can chemically inject dissolved oxygen and suppress Pythium spores using Hydrogen Peroxide (\(H_2O_2\)):
- The chemical reaction: Inside water, hydrogen peroxide (\(2H_2O_2\)) breaks down into water (\(2H_2O\)) and a free oxygen molecule (\(O_2\)) that dissolves into the root zone while oxidizing anaerobic pathogens.
- Safe hydroponic dosage (Sterile Hydroponics WITHOUT fish):
- Using pharmacy 3 percent Hydrogen Peroxide (only hydrogen peroxide and purified water with no stabilizers): Add 2.5 to 3 milliliters per liter (2 teaspoons per US gallon) of reservoir water, and stir with a clean PVC pipe for 60 seconds.
- Using horticultural 29 percent to 35 percent Food-Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (wear eye protection and nitrile gloves): Add 0.25 to 0.3 milliliters per liter (1 milliliter per US gallon), prediluted in a bucket of water before pouring into the reservoir. Repeat once every 12 to 24 hours during an outage.
- Ultra-conservative dosage for Aquaponics (Live Fish Tanks):
- Fish gills are burned by hydroponic peroxide doses. In an aquaponic fish tank experiencing hypoxia (fish gasping at the surface), first splash-aerate manually by dipping a 20-liter (5-gallon) bucket of tank water and pouring it back from waist height 30 times.
- If chemical oxygen is needed to save suffocating fish, dose 3 percent pharmacy hydrogen peroxide at no more than 0.15 to 0.25 milliliters per liter of fish-tank water (0.6 to 1.0 milliliter per US gallon), poured slowly across the surface and mixed by hand.
Cutting plant transpiration demand during a pump outage¶
While hydroponic pumps are offline, slow down the rate at which crops drink water and consume root oxygen:
- Turn off high-intensity grow lights immediately: High-intensity lighting drives stomatal transpiration, causing NFT or aeroponic crops to wilt three times faster.
- Deploy 50% ki he 70% tupenu malumalu: To'o ho'o screen malumalu 'i 'olunga 'o tapuni pe drape 'ufi'ufi laine hinehina 'i he funga 'o e 'aofi ke tuku hifo 'a e mafana 'o e lau mo e motuhi 'a e vai 'oku to'o 'aki 'a e peseti 'e 60.
