Clipboard hijacker malware and address poisoning attack: swapping crypto wallet or IBAN on paste, verifying middle and last characters¶

When you copy a cryptocurrency wallet address (BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL, TRX) or an international bank account number (IBAN / SWIFT / ABA) and press paste (Ctrl+V kapa Cmd+V), two distinct threats can silently redirect your funds to a criminal syndicate: local Clipboard Hijacker ("Clipper") Malware running in your computer's memory that swaps the text inside your system clipboard in under 5 milliseconds, or an on-chain Vanity Address Poisoning Attack that pollutes your wallet transaction history with a counterfeit lookalike address matching the first 4 to 6 and last 4 to 6 characters of your real destination. This guide provides immediate steps to cancel pending blockchain or wire transactions, detect and remove local clipboard-monitoring malware, and verify the middle characters of every destination address before signing on a hardware wallet screen.
Etsa sena hona joale¶
- Attempt an immediate Nonce Replacement (
Speed Up / Cancel) if a cryptocurrency transaction is still pending in the mempool. Open your wallet (MetaMask,Rabby,Ledger Live,Electrum,Sparrow) and check if the transaction status is still Pending / Unconfirmed. On Ethereum and EVM chains, immediately click Cancel (or send a0 ETHtransaction to your own address using the exact same Custom Nonce with a 30 percent higher Priority Gas Fee). On Bitcoin, execute a Replace-By-Fee (RBF) cancellation to route the inputs back to your own wallet before the next block is mined. - Call your bank's wire fraud unit immediately if an
IBAN,ABA, kapaSort Codewas swapped on paste. If clipboard malware altered a pasted bank account number on a domestic wire,SWIFTtransfer, orSEPApayment, call your bank's fraud line or your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) for police crime reference numbers; see dinomoro tsa tshohanyetso for international contacts. Demand an immediateSWIFT MT192/SEPA SCT Recalland cite the mismatch between the Beneficiary Name and the Clipper-substitutedIBAN. - Determine whether you are facing Local Clipper Malware or On-Chain Address Poisoning. Open a plain-text editor (
Notepadon Windows orTextEditon macOS), copy a known wallet address or sample string (0x71C...89A), and paste it into the text file. If the pasted text transforms into a different address the instant you pressCtrl+V, your device is actively infected with Clipper Malware; disconnect the computer from Wi-Fi and Ethernet immediately. If the pasted text does not change in Notepad, you copied a Poisoned Vanity Address directly from your wallet's recent transaction history list. - Freeze centralized exchange off-ramps and file a Tether (
USDT) or Circle (USDC) smart contract blacklist request. If stolen stablecoins (USDTkapaUSDC) were sent to a poisoned or clipper wallet on Ethereum, Tron (TRC-20), or Solana, trace the Transaction Hash (TXID) on a block explorer (Etherscan,Tronscan,Solscan) and submit an emergency law-enforcement freeze ticket to Tether (tether.to) or Circle (circle.com), which possess administrative smart-contract keys (AddedBlackList/freeze) capable of freezing stolenUSDT/USDCdirectly inside the attacker's wallet. - Evacuate remaining funds from the infected PC using a separate, clean device. Because Clipper Malware (
Laplas Clipper,ClipBanker,Lumma,RedLine) is almost always bundled inside a broader credential and seed-phrase infostealer, assume every software wallet (MetaMask,Phantom,Exodus) and saved password on that computer is compromised. Do not type your seed phrase or private keys into the infected machine.
Diagnosing the attack: Local Clipper Malware vs. On-Chain Address Poisoning¶
Although both attacks result in your money arriving at an attacker's wallet instead of your intended recipient's address, their technical mechanics are completely different. You must identify which attack occurred within the first 60 seconds because Local Clipper Malware means your operating system is breached, whereas Address Poisoning occurs entirely on the public blockchain without any malware on your device.
1. How Local Clipboard Hijacker ("Clipper") Malware works¶
A Clipper (Trojan.Clipper, Cryxos, ClipBanker, Laplas) is a lightweight background process, malicious Chrome/Firefox browser extension, or Trojanized open-source package that registers a hook into the operating system's clipboard API (AddClipboardFormatListener on Windows or NSPasteboard on macOS).
* Real-time Regex pattern matching: Every time you press Ctrl+C (Copy), the malware inspects the copied string against Regular Expressions (Regex) looking for patterns that match a Bitcoin address (bc1q..., 1..., 3...), an Ethereum/EVM address (0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters), a Tron TRC-20 address (T followed by 33 characters), a Solana address, or a European/UK IBAN (DE89..., GB29...).
* Instantaneous substitution: Within 2 to 5 milliseconds, before your fingers move from Ctrl+C ho Ctrl+V, the malware overwrites your system clipboard buffer with an attacker-owned address. Advanced services like Laplas Clipper even generate a real-time vanity address on the fly from a massive pre-computed database of millions of attacker addresses so that the first 3 to 4 characters and last 3 to 4 characters of the substituted clipboard address match what you just copied.
2. How On-Chain Vanity Address Poisoning works (Zero Malware)¶
In an Address Poisoning attack, your computer, phone, and wallet are not hacked. Instead, blockchain threat actors run automated bots that monitor every public USDT, USDC, ETH, TRX, le WBTC transfer on Ethereum, Tron, Arbitrum, BSC, and Solana.
* The Vanity Prefix/Suffix Generator: The moment you send a legitimate transfer (even a smart-contract practice test transfer of $10) to a real recipient address, for example:
* Real Address: 0x89205A3A3b2A69De6Dbf7f01ED13B2108B2c43e7
* Mohlaseli o sebelisa lihlopha tsa GPU ho hlahisa aterese ea sepache ea maiketsetso eo ** litlhaku tsa pele tse 5 (0x89205...) le litlhaku tse 5 tsa ho qetela (...c43e7) li tšoana ka liperesente tse 100** le aterese ea motho ea u amohelang, ha litlhaku tse bohareng tse 30 li fapane ka ho felletseng:
* Aterese e Tšoanang le e Chefo: 0x89205f91c48012b3847109ab84910283749c43e7
* Ho silafatsa nalane ea khoebo ea hau (Zero-Value kapa Fake Token Spoofing): Hobane likonteraka tse bohlale tsa ERC-20 le TRC-20 (transferFrom) lumella mang kapa mang ho ntša a 0 USDT fetisa ketsahalo ho tsoa sepacheng sa hau ntle le senotlolo sa hau sa lekunutu (kapa romella $0.0001 "lerole" kapa setlolo sa maiketsetso sa unicode USDТ token), the attacker inserts a fake transaction into your wallet's public transaction log so that their poisoned lookalike address sits at the very top of your "Recent Transactions" list.
* The UI Truncation Trap: Because mobile and browser wallets (MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger Live, TronLink, Etherscan) truncate long 42-character addresses on screen as 0x89205...c43e7 to save space, both the real address and the poisoned address look visually identical in your transaction history. Next week, when you go to send the real $50,000 transfer and lazily copy the address from your own "last transaction" in your wallet history instead of your address book, you copy the attacker's poisoned address.
* Create2 Smart Contract Pre-Computation: In advanced attacks targeting high-net-worth treasuries, attackers use the EVM CREATE2 opcode to pre-generate millions of dormant smart contract addresses with 6-character prefix and 6-character suffix matches (12 matching hex characters total). When a victim sends funds to the dormant address, the attacker deploys a sweeper contract at that exact CREATE2 address to drain the funds automatically.
Danger
Never verify only the first 4 and last 4 characters of a wallet address: Modern GPU vanity-address farms (profanity2, vanity-eth, tron-vanity) can brute-force a matching 5-character prefix and 5-character suffix (10 hex characters total) in seconds. When verifying any cryptocurrency address or IBAN, you must verify a block of 8 to 10 characters in the exact middle of the string (characters 15 through 25) in addition to the start and end.
Emergency workflow: triaging a swapped wallet or IBAN transfer¶

Comparison of clipboard hijacking and address poisoning vectors¶
Use this reference table to identify how the address swap occurred and what forensic artifacts exist on your system or blockchain explorer.
| Attack Vector | Requires Local Malware on Your Device? | How the Address Swap Occurs | Primary Targets | How to Detect It in 30 Seconds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Windows / macOS Clipper Executable (ClipBanker, Laplas) |
Yes (Runs as background .exe, .dll, kapa LaunchAgent) |
Hooks OS clipboard listener (WM_CLIPBOARDUPDATE); replaces any copied string matching crypto/IBAN regex within milliseconds. |
BTC, ETH, TRX, SOL, XMR, LTC, and European/UK IBAN strings copied from PDF invoices. |
Copy any random valid wallet address (0x... kapa bc1q...) and paste it into Notepad. The pasted middle characters will change every time. |
Malicious Browser Extension Clipper (Chrome / Edge / Firefox) |
Yes (Installed inside browser profile via navigator.clipboard or DOM script) |
Injects JavaScript into web pages (Etherscan, webmail, banking portals, Google Docs) that rewrites displayed addresses on screen or hooks copy/paste browser events. |
Web-based crypto explorers, online banking IBAN fields, and DeFi web interfaces. |
Pasting inside Notepad works normally, but copying or pasting inside Chrome/Edge alters the string. Test in an Incognito window with all extensions disabled. |
Zero-Value Transfer Address Poisoning (transferFrom Spoof) |
No (100% On-Chain Social Engineering) | Attacker calls ERC-20/TRC-20 transferFrom(victim, poisoned_vanity_addr, 0) because standard token contracts allow zero-value transfers without approval. |
High-value USDT, USDC, le DAI holders on Ethereum, Tron (TRC-20), BSC, and Polygon. |
Inspect your wallet on Etherscan kapa Tronscan under Token Transfers: you will see a 0 USDT outbound transfer that has a different Txn Signer (Initiator) than your wallet. |
Counterfeit Unicode Token Spoofing (Fake USDT) |
No (100% On-Chain Social Engineering) | When you send 50,000 USDT to a real address, the attacker's bot immediately triggers a fake 50,000 USDТ (using Cyrillic Т) fetisetsa ho tloha atereseng ea hau ho ea lefeela la bona ka motsotso o le mong. |
Institutional treasuries and traders who do a "small test send" followed by a large transfer copied from history. | Check the Token Contract Address of the suspicious transaction in your history; it will point to an unverified scam token contract rather than official Tether (0xdAC17...1ec7). |
Dust Poisoning (Native ETH / BTC / SOL / TRX Dust) |
No (100% On-Chain Social Engineering) | Attacker sends 0.000001 ETH kapa 0.001 SOL from a vanity lookalike address to your wallet so their address appears as the most recent contact in your wallet UI. |
Native chain transfers (ETH, SOL, BTC, TRX) where 0-value transferFrom calls are not used. |
You see a tiny unsolicited incoming dust transaction from an address whose first 4 and last 4 characters match a wallet you regularly pay. |
Step-by-step emergency actions if funds were just sent to the wrong address¶
If you pressed "Send" or signed the transaction before noticing that the middle characters of the address belonged to a Clipper or Address Poisoner, execute these steps immediately.
1. Canceling an unconfirmed cryptocurrency transaction in the mempool (First 10 to 60 seconds)¶
If the blockchain network is congested or you set a low gas/satoshi fee, your transaction may still be sitting in the public mempool waiting to be included in a block:
* On Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, Base, and BSC (EVM Chains):
1. Open MetaMask, Rabby, kapa Trust Wallet and look at the Activity tab. If the transaction says Pending, click the Cancel button immediately and select Aggressive / High Gas Fee.
2. Manual Nonce Overwrite (More Reliable): Enable Customize transaction nonce in your wallet's Advanced Settings. Look up your pending transaction on Etherscan to find its exact Nonce number (for example, Nonce: 42). Immediately initiate a new transaction sending 0 ETH to your own wallet address, manually enter 42 in the Custom Nonce field, and set the Max Priority Fee (Gwei) at least 30% to 50% higher than the stuck transaction. Miners/validators will process your higher-fee 0 ETH transaction first, invalidating the malicious transfer with Nonce 42.
* On Bitcoin (BTC):
1. Most modern wallets (Electrum, Sparrow, Ledger Live, BlueWallet) enable Opt-in Replace-By-Fee (BIP-125 RBF) by default.
2. Right-click the unconfirmed outbound transaction in your wallet history and select Cancel Transaction (Double-Spend to Self) or Bump Fee / Modify Output, setting a significantly higher fee rate (sat/vB checked against mempool.space) so miners confirm the replacement transaction back to your own change address.
2. Freezing stolen USDT (Tether) or USDC (Circle) via smart contract blacklisting¶
Ho fapana le matsoalloa a Bitcoin kapa Ethereum, li-stablecoins tse peli tse kholo ka ho fetisisa tsa US, Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC), contain centralized administrative functions (blacklist, freeze, destroyBlackFunds) written directly into their token smart contracts on Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), Solana, Polygon, and Avalanche.
1. Open Etherscan.io kapa Tronscan.org and paste your Transaction Hash (TXID). Check whether the stolen USDT kapa USDC is still sitting inside the attacker's vanity/clipper wallet or an intermediary staging wallet. Address poisoners often leave stolen USDT in the vanity address for hours or days before swapping it via decentralized exchanges (DEXs) or cross-chain bridges.
2. Immediately file an emergency report with FBI IC3 (ic3.gov) and local law enforcement, and simultaneously contact Tether Compliance / Law Enforcement Support (tether.to/en/contact-us) or Circle Law Enforcement Requests with the exact:
* Victim wallet address
* Attacker destination wallet address holding the current USDT/USDC balance
* Transaction Hash (TXID) and timestamp
3. Also report the theft simultaneously to blockchain intelligence incident response networks such as Chainalysis, TRM Labs (Chainabuse.com), SEAL 911 (Security Alliance emergency Telegram bot @seal_911_bot for acute crypto hacks), and the compliance desks of any centralized exchange (Binance, Coinbase, OKX, Kraken, Bybit, FixedFloat, ChangeNOW) if the attacker transfers the funds into an exchange deposit address.
3. Recalling a Clipper-swapped bank wire or IBAN transfer¶
When Clipper malware targets business or personal banking users, it watches for copied IBAN strings (such as copying an IBAN from a supplier's PDF invoice in Adobe Reader and pasting it into an online banking portal) and swaps the IBAN with a money-mule account while leaving the Beneficiary Name untouched.
* Invoke Verification of Payee (VoP / Confirmation of Payee) and Name-Mismatch Rules: Call your bank's wire fraud unit immediately. Explain that Clipper Malware altered the pasted IBAN number on your computer and that the Beneficiary Account Name on the payment order does not match the legal owner of the substituted IBAN.
* Under European Union Instant Payments Regulation (EU Regulation 2024/886) and UK Confirmation of Payee (CoP) frameworks: Payment service providers are required to verify that the IBAN and Beneficiary Name match before execution, and must transmit an immediate SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) Recall (camt.056) for Fraud within the interbank clearing window.
* Preserving EIP-55 Checksum and Mod-97 IBAN Evidence: Document the exact IBAN that was inside your original PDF invoice versus the IBAN e fetisetsoa bukeng ea hau ea tlhahlobo ea banka ea inthaneteng. Hobane IBAN strings include a 2-digit ISO 7064 Mod-97-10 checksum right after the country code (for example, GB29 kapa DE89), a human typo almost always fails the bank portal's Mod-97 mathematical validation immediately. Proving that the wrong IBAN had a mathematically valid Mod-97 check digit proves to your bank's fraud investigators that an automated Clipper replaced the entire account string rather than a user making a keystroke error.
Hunting and eradicating Local Clipper Malware (Windows, macOS, and Browsers)¶
If your Notepad test proved that your clipboard is actively mutating copied wallet addresses or IBAN numbers, your machine is running an active Clipper payload. Follow these steps offline to isolate and remove it.
Phase 1: Check whether the Clipper lives inside your Web Browser Extensions¶
Before digging into system files, determine if a rogue browser extension is responsible:
1. Open Notepad.exe (Windows) or TextEdit (macOS) with your web browser completely closed (verify via Task Manager Ctrl+Shift+Esc that no background chrome.exe kapa msedge.exe processes are running).
2. Type a fake Ethereum address (0x1111222233334444555566667777888899990000) in Notepad, highlight it, press Ctrl+C, move to a new line, and press Ctrl+V.
3. If the address does NOT change in Notepad when the browser is closed, but DOES change when copying from Chrome/Edge/Brave: You have a malicious browser extension (Malicious Clipper Extension).
* Open your browser, type chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions / about:addons), and remove every unrecognized extension, especially fake ad blockers, PDF converters, dark-mode toggles, volume boosters, or fake Ledger/Uniswap/MetaMask helper extensions.
* Reset browser sync at chrome.google.com/sync so Google does not automatically reinstall the malicious extension when you sign back in.
Phase 2: Identifying and killing OS-level Clipper processes in Safe Mode¶
If the address changes even inside Notepad with all browsers closed, you have an operating-system-level Clipper (ClipBanker, Laplas, Phemedrone, RedLine).
On Windows 10 and Windows 11¶
- Disconnect from Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet immediately.
- Open Task Manager (
Ctrl + Shift + Esc), click the Startup Apps tab, and disable any unfamiliar program (Clippers frequently disguise themselves asRealtek HD Audio Helper,Windows Updater,Java Update Scheduler, kapaOneDrive Sync Hostlocated insideAppData\Roaming\instead ofC:\Windows\System32\). - Open Task Scheduler (

Warning
A Clipper is almost never just a Clipper, so assume full Infostealer compromise: In 95 percent of modern infections, the clipboard-swapping module is just one feature inside a full-scale Infostealer (Lumma Stealer, RedLine, Vidar, Stealc, Atomic macOS Stealer). By the time you notice the Clipper swapping a pasted wallet address, the malware has already uploaded your saved browser passwords, active session cookies, desktop Electrum/Exodus wallet files, and Chrome MetaMask/Phantom extension vaults to the attacker's command-and-control server. Never continue using any software cryptocurrency wallet that was present on a Clipper-infected machine.
Hardware wallet defense: how to make Clipper and Poisoning attacks impossible¶
Even if your computer is infected with the most advanced Clipper malware on earth, or your transaction history is flooded with hundreds of poisoned vanity addresses, neither attack can steal your funds if you follow a strict Hardware Wallet (Ledger, Trezor, Keystone, Coldcard, GridPlus) physical screen verification protocol:
- The "Middle-8 + Start-4 + End-4" Character Verification Rule: Never look at your computer monitor to verify an address, because a malicious browser extension can display the real address on your PC screen while sending the attacker's address to your wallet in the background. Instead, look directly at the physical OLED/E-Ink screen of your hardware wallet and compare it against a second, independent communication channel (such as a photo of the recipient's QR code on your smartphone or a verified voice readback of the middle characters):
0x 8920 [5A3A3b2A69De6Dbf7f01ED13B2108B] 2c43e7
==== ========== ======
Start-4 Verify Middle-10 End-6
- Never copy an address from your "Recent Transactions" or Block Explorer history:
Treat your wallet's transaction history (
Activitytab in MetaMask, Ledger Live, Trust Wallet, or Etherscan) as untrusted public graffiti. Anyone on earth can inject fake rows into your public transaction history. Instead: - Save every recurring counterparty, exchange deposit address, and cold storage wallet inside your wallet's native Address Book / Whitelist Contacts (
Settings -> Contactsin MetaMask/Rabby) with a clear human label ("My Coinbase USDC Deposit"). - Once an address is saved in your Address Book, modern wallets replace the truncated
0x1234...5678hex string with the contact's saved name badge across the interface. If a transaction in your history shows raw hex characters instead of your saved contact badge, you know immediately it is a poisoned imposter address. - Switch to a security-focused wallet client (
Rabby,Frame, kapaLedger Clear Signing) with Poisoning Detection: Wallets like Rabby Wallet and MetaMask Blockaid security alerts automatically flag first-time transfers to an address that has never received funds from you before, warn you if an address visually mimics a previous contact (Similarity Warning), and hide0-valuespoofed token transfers from your main activity feed.
