Deep dive 1: Surviving a high-wind hard landing and basket drag¶
A hot air balloon basket is engineered from woven rattan and heavy willow wicker over a marine-grade plywood floor reinforced with steel suspension cables and hardwood skids. Aeronautical engineers choose rattan wicker over rigid aluminum or carbon fiber for a specific biomechanical reason: wicker flexes, crushes slightly, and dissipates kinetic energy during hard ground impacts without shattering into sharp shrapnel. However, the basket can only protect you if your body stays coupled to its interior structure.
Why locking your knees or sitting down on the basket floor causes spinal fractures¶
When a balloon descends rapidly in a downdraft at 4 to 6 meters per second (800 to 1,200 feet per minute), the vertical impact energy must be absorbed over the longest possible deceleration distance:
- Why you must never sit on the basket floor: The plywood floor sits directly on top of the hardwood ground skids with less than 5 centimeters (2 inches) of crush clearance. When the basket hits hard dirt or asphalt, sitting on the floor transmits vertical G-forces directly into your tailbone, pelvis, and lumbar spine (L1 to L5 vertebrae), risking burst fractures of the spine.
- Why you must never lock your knees straight: Standing with your legs locked straight transmits the shock wave straight through your heel bones, ankle joints, tibial plateaus, and femoral necks.
- The athletic shock-absorber stance: Stand with your feet flat and shoulder-width apart, shift your weight slightly toward the balls of your feet, and bend your knees 20 to 35 degrees in an athletic ski-jumper stance. When the basket hits the ground, let your quadriceps and calf muscles act as hydraulic shock absorbers without letting your buttocks strike the floor.
Step-by-step protocol during a horizontal basket tip-over and drag¶
In any wind exceeding 20 kilometers per hour (12 miles per hour), the nylon envelope catches the horizontal wind like a parachute sail the moment the basket touches the earth. The basket will tip 90 degrees onto its side and drag across the field until the hot air escapes from the top vent.

================= (Ground Skids) /////////////////////////// (Ground)
Execute these steps during a tipping drag landing:
- Position your back against the forward wall (in the direction of travel): As the basket tips over in the direction of the wind, the forward wall becomes the floor sliding along the grass. If your back is already pressed flat against that forward wall before impact, your body rotates 90 degrees with the wall until you are lying on your back looking toward the open basket mouth, with zero free-fall distance inside the compartment.
- Expect partitionmates to stack briefly: In larger commercial passenger baskets (divided into T-partitions holding 2 to 4 passengers per bay), the person standing further back in the compartment rotates down alongside the person pressed against the front wall. Keep your elbows tucked in, chin tucked to your chest, and hold onto your own pair of braided rope handles.
- Protect your head and face from fence posts, rocks, and brush: As the tipped basket drags across pastures or scrub at 25 to 40 kilometers per hour (15 to 25 miles per hour), fences, posts, and branches may whip across the open mouth of the tipped basket. Keep your head tucked deep inside the compartment toward the padded bolster rim and look down toward your knees.
- Hold on through multiple bounces: A dragging balloon often hits a berm, ditch, or road bank, launching 2 to 4 meters (6.5 to 13 feet) back into the air before hitting down a second time. Never relax your grip on the interior rope handles after the first stop; keep holding tightly until the dragging motion stops completely and the nylon envelope lies slack on the ground.
Deep dive 2: Onboard liquid propane leaks, burner fires, and pilot light safety¶
Hot air balloons carry between 60 and 250 liters (15 and 65 US gallons) of pressurized Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG / propane) stored inside two to four cylindrical stainless-steel or titanium tanks strapped vertically inside the corners of the pilot compartment. Unlike a backyard barbecue grill that draws low-pressure propane vapor off the top of the tank, hot air balloon burners require massive heat output (ranging from 3 to 6 megawatts, or 10 million to 20 million BTU per hour) and therefore draw pressurized liquid propane directly from a dip tube at the bottom of the tank at 700 to 1,400 kilopascals (100 to 200 pounds per square inch).
How liquid propane leaks behave inside a balloon basket¶
When liquid propane escapes from a cracked high-pressure rubber hose, a failed O-ring seal on a RegO quick-disconnect fitting, or a cross-threaded blast valve:
- Volumetric expansion: Liquid propane flash-boils into gas at atmospheric pressure and expands to 270 times its liquid volume, rapidly filling the lower basket compartment with a flammable vapor cloud.
- Cryogenic frostbite at minus 42 degrees Celsius (minus 44 degrees Fahrenheit): Boiling liquid propane absorbs heat from anything it touches; spraying liquid propane onto bare hands or skin causes deep-tissue frostbite within 2 seconds.
- Heavier-than-air vapor pooling in the wicker basket: Propane gas has a specific gravity of 1.52 compared to air (1.00), so unignited propane vapor sinks straight down to the plywood floor of the basket around the ankles of occupants.
Emergency actions during an in-flight propane leak or burner fire¶
| Fire or Fuel Emergency Scenario | Pilot Technical Procedure | Passenger Survival Actions |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Unignited Liquid Propane Hose or Fitting Leak (White Frost Cloud & Loud Hiss) | Extinguish all burner pilot lights on the affected and adjacent burners to prevent flash ignition; wear leather gloves to close the main liquid valve on top of the leaking cylinder; switch to an isolated backup cylinder and fuel manifold. | Do not touch the frosty white leaking hose. Stand upright with your head above the wicker rim to breathe clean air while heavy propane vapor vents out through the porous wicker weave. |
| 2. Flaming Fuel Line or Cylinder Top Valve Fire Inside the Basket | Close the main liquid tank supply valve on the burning cylinder using a leather-gloved hand; keep the overhead blast valve open for 2 seconds to let residual fuel inside the hose burn upward out of the coils; apply onboard Halon/dry chemical extinguisher to residual flames. | Turn your back to the flame, pull your jacket collar up over your neck and ears, and crouch down inside your compartment partition wall to use the woven wicker as a heat shield. Never jump from an airborne basket. |
| 3. Prior to Hard Landing or Power Line Contact (Fuel Cutoff Protocol) | At 10 to 20 meters (33 to 65 feet) above touchdown during an emergency landing, the pilot turns OFF all main cylinder valves, turns OFF all pilot light valves, and fires the blast valves one final time to purge liquid propane trapped inside the hoses. | Listen for the silence when the pilot shuts off the loud hissing pilot lights just before impact; this is a planned safety procedure. Maintain your backward-facing brace position until the balloon stops moving. |
How to help if the pilot is incapacitated upon landing
If the pilot is knocked unconscious during a brutal ground impact and a propane burner pilot light is still roaring or a fuel line is hissing inside the tipped basket: 1. Locate the stainless-steel propane cylinders strapped in the corners of the center pilot bay. 2. Look for the main handwheel valve on top of each cylinder (connected to the thick black high-pressure hose running to the burner). 3. Turn every handwheel clockwise (to the right, "righty-tighty") until fully closed to stop the flow of liquid propane from the tanks. 4. Pull the red tether line (attached to the top circular parachute vent panel of the balloon envelope) hard toward the basket to open the top of the balloon and let the remaining hot air escape so the wind stops dragging the basket.

- Suspension Cable and Burner Frame Contact (The Arc Zone): Between the bottom of the nylon envelope and the top of the wicker basket, the balloon is held together by 4 to 8 braided stainless-steel suspension cables that route through the steel burner frame and wrap around the underside of the basket floor. If these bare steel cables bridge two energized power lines, thousands of amperes of current arc through the steel. High-voltage arcs reach 4,000 degrees Celsius (7,200 degrees Fahrenheit), severing steel suspension cables or arcing to stainless-steel propane cylinders.
- Wicker Basket Entanglement: If the balloon gets caught in power lines and the basket hangs just above the ground or rests on the dirt while wires remain draped over the balloon, the dry wicker acts as an imperfect insulator.
Step-by-step survival protocol if your balloon strikes or hangs in power lines¶
- Before contact: Let go of all metal components: Keep your hands strictly on the braided nylon or polyester interior rope handles inside the wicker wall. Never grab the metal burner uprights, stainless-steel fuel hoses, steel carabiners, or bare steel suspension cables.
- If the basket is hanging in wires or resting on the ground with wires touching the balloon: STAY IN THE BASKET:
- Do not climb out, do not touch the grass, and warn bystanders on the ground not to touch the basket or ropes.
- Stepping one foot onto the earth while touching the energized basket bridges a lethal circuit through your heart into the ground. See lutu na laini ni livaliva kei na livaliva ni motoka.
- Call 911 / 112 / 999 and the electric utility emergency desk: Give your GPS coordinates and request an emergency utility line de-energization and grounding crew.
- If the basket is actively on fire while touching live power lines (Last-Resort Jump Protocol):
- Only if an active fire inside the basket makes remaining inside fatal should you leave before utility crews arrive.
- Climb onto the dry wicker rim without touching any steel cables or metal struts, and jump completely clear so no part of your body touches the basket when your feet hit the ground.
- Land with both feet pressed tightly together and shuffle or bunny-hop with both feet together at least 30 meters (100 feet) away from the balloon and downed wires.
Ground crew and bystander safety: the crown line and tether trap¶
Many hot air balloon accidents injure untrained ground crew volunteers, landowners, or bystanders who rush up to grab ropes dangling from a landing balloon.
3 rules for anyone on the ground near a hot air balloon¶
- NEVER wrap a balloon crown line, handling line, or tether rope around your hand, wrist, waist, or ankle:
- When a gust catches an inflated balloon or a pilot fires the burners to abort a bad landing, the upward pull on the rope exceeds 10,000 to 25,000 Newtons (2,200 to 5,600 pounds of force) in under a second.
- Anyone who loops a handling rope around their wrist or waist, or steps inside a rope coil on the grass, can be yanked straight into the air underneath the ascending balloon.
- Taura e dua na laini ni isala kei na dolava, liga gloved duadua ga, tu ena taudaku ni dua na coils ni dali, vakarau me laiva na dali me cici tani kevaka e laveta cake na baluni.

- Keep children and pets away from the cold-inflation gasoline fan: Stay at least 5 meters (16 feet) behind or to the side of the spinning propeller cage fan to prevent finger injuries, hair entanglement, or eye debris.
Pre-flight passenger safety audit checklist¶
Ni bera ni o kalawa ki na dua na basikete ni baluni cagi katakata, vakadeitaka na lima na ivakatagedegede ni veitaqomaki oqo:
- Footwear and clothing: Wear flat-soled, closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots (never heels or sandals). Wear long pants and a cotton, wool, or denim shirt or jacket rather than synthetic fabrics that melt under heat.
- Head protection: Wear a cotton cap or hat to shield the crown of your head from the radiant heat of the overhead burners.
- Locate your two braided rope handles upon boarding: Place both hands on your assigned interior rope handles and practice your facing-backward, knees-bent landing stance.
- Inspect compartment padding: Verify that top rim padding and propane cylinder foam covers are in place and no loose heavy objects sit on the floor.
- Verify weather limits: Commercial passenger balloons generally do not launch if surface winds exceed 15 to 20 kilometers per hour (9 to 14 miles per hour) or if thunderstorms are within 50 kilometers (30 miles).
Enroll in a hands-on wilderness and trauma first aid course
Because balloons often land in remote pastures far from paved roads, taking a hands-on first aid, CPR, and splinting course from the Red Cross or St John Ambulance prepares you to stabilize fractures or burns while awaiting EMS.
Na taro e dau tarogi wasoma .¶
Why must passengers never sit down on the floor of a hot air balloon basket during a hard landing?
Sitting directly on the rigid plywood floor removes your legs from the shock-absorption equation and places your tailbone, pelvis, and lumbar spine directly against the ground skids. When the basket hits the earth at a high vertical descent rate, the impact transmits straight up your spine, risking vertebral burst fractures. Always stand with your feet flat, shoulder-width apart, and knees bent 20 to 35 degrees while holding the interior rope handles.
Why is it dangerous for a passenger to jump out of the basket as soon as it touches the ground?
When a hot air balloon first touches down, the envelope overhead is still filled with buoyant hot air. If even one adult passenger jumps out before the pilot pulls the deflation vent open, the sudden loss of 70 to 100 kilograms (150 to 220 pounds) makes the balloon lighter than air again, causing it to shoot back into the sky while uncontrolled or with other passengers halfway over the rim. Never exit until the pilot commands it.
Which way should you face during a windy hot air balloon landing?
Always face backward, away from the direction the balloon is traveling across the ground, with your back and shoulders pressed firmly against the padded forward wall or partition of your compartment. When the basket strikes the ground and tips 90 degrees onto its forward side, your spine and head are already supported flat against the surface that becomes the sliding floor.
What should you do if a hot air balloon gets stuck in overhead power lines?
Stay inside the dry wicker basket and keep your hands and body clear of all metal burner frames, steel suspension cables, and propane cylinders. Never step onto the ground while touching the basket, and warn bystanders not to touch the balloon, as bridging the basket and earth completes a lethal high-voltage circuit. Wait inside for utility crews to de-energize the line. Only if the basket is actively on fire should you jump clear with both feet together and shuffle 30 meters (100 feet) away.
What happens if the propane burners go out completely in mid-air?
If all burners fail in flight, a hot air balloon does not plummet like a stone. Pilots can re-ignite burners using backup strikers and redundant fuel lines. Even if the air inside cools completely, the wide mouth of the descending envelope catches rushing air from below and inflates like a giant parachute, limiting terminal descent velocity to roughly 6 to 8 meters per second (14 to 18 miles per hour), which is survivable in the knees-bent brace position.
How do you turn off a hot air balloon propane tank if the pilot is injured during landing?
Locate the vertical stainless-steel propane cylinders strapped in the corners of the pilot compartment, find the round handwheel valve on top of each cylinder where the black burner hose attaches, and turn each handwheel clockwise (to the right) until tight. Then pull the red deflation line attached to the top parachute vent of the envelope to spill the hot air.
