  1. ಹಗ್ಗ-ತಂಡದ ಪಾಲುದಾರನು ಹಿಮ ಸೇತುವೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಗುದ್ದಿದಾಗ (ಅಥವಾ ಕೂಗು) ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಐಸ್ ಏಕ್ಸ್ ಸ್ವಯಂ-ಬಂಧನಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಎಸೆಯಿರಿ "FALLING" if you are the one dropping): Grip the ice axe head (piolet) with one hand over the adze and the other hand at the bottom spike of the shaft, roll onto your stomach facing the axe pick, drive the steel pick steadily into the snow right beside your shoulder while keeping your crampon toes lifted UP off the snow (digging crampon front-points into hard snow at speed catches and catapults you backward, snapping your ankles), and hold the load against the snow until movement stops.
  2. If you are hanging conscious inside the crevasse, immediately unclip your heavy backpack onto your harness belay loop and step into your Foot Prusik Loop to prevent Suspension Syndrome: Hanging motionless with your full body weight + a 18-kilogram (40-pound) backpack pressing your harness leg straps against your femoral veins causes venous blood to pool in your legs (Suspension Trauma), which can induce syncope and cardiac arrest in 15 to 30 minutes. Immediately clip your already-rigged Foot Prusik / Tibloc / Micro Traxion sling onto the rope above your tie-in knot and stand up in the foot loop to pump your leg muscles, and lower your backpack on a tether loop so it hangs below your feet.
  3. If you are the rescuer holding the fall on the surface, build a Snow Picket (T-Slot ಅಥವಾ Vertical Mid-Clip) or Ice Screw anchor FIRST without letting go of the load: Keep your body weight anchoring the rope in the self-arrest position while reaching to your harness with one hand to drive a Snow Picket (in firm névé/snow) or Ice Screw (in blue glacial ice) behind or beside your hip, clip a locking carabiner and a Friction Hitch (Autoblock, Klemheist, ಅಥವಾ Prusik) or Micro Traxion from the anchor onto the taut victim rope, and slowly inch forward until the anchor takes 100% of the victim's weight off your harness.
  4. NEVER walk right up to the edge of the crevasse lip UNBELAYED: Snow bridges overhang the true ice wall of a crevasse by 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) on both sides. Always stay clipped into a backed-up second anchor via your personal belay loop and probe the snow every 30 centimeters (12 inches) with your ice axe shaft or avalanche probe as you crawl to the lip.
  5. Pad the crevasse lip with an ice axe shaft, snow picket, ski, or backpack BEFORE hauling: If you pull a loaded 9-millimeter glacier rope straight over a soft snow lip without padding, the rope will immediately slice 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) deep into the snow lip like a cheese wire ("renching"), jamming the victim's head and hands directly against the overhanging snow ceiling so they cannot get over the lip.
  6. Choose the fastest extraction method for the victim's condition (Drop-Loop 2:1, Fixed-Rope Self-Ascent, ಅಥವಾ 3:1 / 6:1 Z-Pulley): If the fallen climber is uninjured and conscious, dropping a simple Bight of Rope (Drop-Loop) with a carabiner on their harness creates an instant 2:1 haul where they help pull themselves up in 3 minutes, or they can ascend the fixed rope using their Chest + Foot Prusiks. Reserve complex 3:1 Z-Pulley or 6:1 Drop-Loop + Z-Pulley systems for injured, unconscious, or exhausted climbers.

Danger

What if a climber falls deep into a narrowing "V-Shaped" crevasse and gets wedged tightly by the ribs/hips? Every time an unroped or loosely roped climber exhales inside a tapering vertical ice crack, gravity slides their torso 1 centimeter deeper into the wedge until they cannot expand their chest to inhale (Thoracic Compression Asphyxia), while the surrounding 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) ice drains core heat rapidly. Never tell a wedged climber to wiggle or kick downward to free themselves, and once extracted to the surface, keep a severely chilled or long-suspended climber horizontal to prevent orthostatic rescue collapse and afterdrop following our wilderness hypothermia and cold survival guide.

Phase 1: Stopping a glacier fall (Ice Axe Self-Arrest & Team Arrest mechanics)

Before setting foot on a snow-covered glacier, every member of a rope team must travel with zero slack (a taut rope between climbers spaced 10 to 15 meters / 33 to 50 feet apart), carry two pre-tied friction hitches (or a Micro Traxion + Tibloc) already clipped to their harness, and hold their ice axe in the Self-Arrest Grip (hand over the head with thumb under the adze, pick pointing backward in piolet-canne)

1. The 4-Step Individual Ice Axe Self-Arrest Drill

Whether you slip on a steep snow slope yourself or are jerked forward off your feet by a partner falling into a crevasse ahead of you, execute these four movements in one fluid second: 1. Two-Hand Arrest Grip on the Axe: - Top hand: Grasp the head of the ice axe firmly over the top of the adze/shaft junction so the steel pick points backward/downward toward the snow (your palm shields the sharp adze from hitting your face). - Bottom hand: Grasp the bottom of the axe shaft right above the steel ferrule/spike. 2. Pull the Axe Tight Diagonally Across Your Chest: - Lock the head of the axe just above and in front of your inside shoulder (the shoulder on the side of the pick), with the shaft running diagonally across your chest to your opposite hip. Never let the axe head drift out away from your shoulder where snow drag will rip it out of your grip (chicken-winging) 3. Roll Toward the Pick Side Onto Your Stomach (Head Uphill): - Always roll toward the side the pick is on (rolling away from the pick levers the shaft out of your hands). - If you were flipped upside down (head-first down the slope), swing the spike end of the axe into the snow out to your side as a pivot point to swing your feet back downhill before driving the pick in. 4. Arch Your Back, Drive Weight Onto Your Shoulder/Pick, and LIFT CRAMPON FEET UP: - CRITICAL RULE WHEN WEARING CRAMPONS: If you are wearing steel crampons on your boots, bend your knees to hold your crampon spikes 30 centimeters (12 inches) UP in the air off the snow while pressing your knees and thighs into the slope. Driving 12 steel crampon points into hard névé while sliding at 25 kilometers per hour (15 mph) instantly hooks your boots, snapping your tibia/fibula or somersaulting you backward over your head onto your neck. - Spread your knees apart for stability and press your chest and shoulder weight gradually and firmly down onto the head of the ice axe so the steel pick plows a deep braking trench until you come to a dead stop.

Phase 2: What to do if YOU are the climber hanging inside the crevasse

If you punch through a snow bridge and jerk to a halt hanging on the rope 5 to 20 meters (16 to 65 feet) down inside blue glacial ice, your partners above cannot hear you clearly through the overhanging snow lip. What you do during the first 3 minutes prevents suspension syncope, hypothermia, and rope-cutting:

Step 1: Relieve Harness Leg-Strap Pressure Immediately (Preventing Suspension Trauma)

When you hang free in a climbing harness, the leg loops compress the femoral veins in your groin while your legs hang motionless without the normal skeletal "muscle pump" that pushes venous blood back up to your heart. Within 15 to 30 minutes (or faster if wearing a heavy backpack), up to 20 percent of your circulating blood volume pools in your lower legs, causing a sudden drop in cardiac preload, loss of consciousness (Orthostatic Suspension Syncope), and fatal hypoxia if your airway slumps forward. 1. Step into your Foot Loop (Foot Prusik / Runner) within 60 seconds: Every glacier traveler should walk with a waist prusik and a long 120-cm (48-inch) foot-loop prusik pre-clipped to the rope (or hanging ready on their harness gear loop). Attach the foot prusik to the climbing rope above your figure-eight tie-in knot, slip your boot into the bottom loop, and stand up on one or both legs every 30 seconds to flex your calf and thigh muscles and relieve groin pressure. 2. If you have no foot loop: Pull both knees high up toward your chest (Sitting / Fetal Position) or brace your crampon points carefully against the ice wall (without cutting the rope) to take weight off your femoral veins. 3. Unclip your heavy backpack onto a tether loop: A 15- to 25-kilogram (33- to 55-pound) expedition pack pulls your upper body backward (flipping you upside down if you are not wearing a chest harness) and adds massive weight if your partners have to haul you. Clip a locking carabiner and a 120-cm (48-inch) dyneema sling from your harness belay loop to the haul loop of your backpack, loosen the pack shoulder straps, and unbuckle the pack so it hangs below your legs from your belay loop (never drop your pack into the bottom of the crevasse, as it holds your insulation and extra rescue gear).

Step 2: Prepare to Self-Ascend the Fixed Rope ("Prusiking / Texas Kick System")

If you are uninjured and feel the rope above you go completely stationary for 3 to 5 minutes (meaning your partner on the surface has built an anchor and transferred your weight onto it), prepare to climb the rope yourself using the Two-Prusik / Ascender System:

      [Anchored Climbing Rope Above]
                   |
         +---------+---------+
         | UPPER ASCENDER | <-- 1. Waist / Chest Prusik (3-Wrap Prusik,
         | (Waist / Chest) | Autoblock, or Petzl Micro Traxion)

+---------+---------+ (AND backed up to Belay Loop for safety)
                   |
         [Tie-In Figure-8 Knot] --> Re-clip dynamic rope bight every 3 meters
  1. Sit back onto your Upper (Waist) Prusik so it bites onto the rope and holds your body weight.
  2. Slide your Lower (Foot) Prusik UP the rope to just below the waist prusik, bending your knee high toward your chest.
  3. Stand straight up on your Foot Loop (pushing with your strong quadriceps leg muscles, never pulling with your arms), and as your waist rises, slide your Upper (Waist) Prusik UP the rope and sit back down onto it.
  4. Mandatory Safety Backup While Ascending: As you climb up the rope, a growing loop of slack climbing rope will hang down below you. Every 2 to 3 meters (6 to 10 feet), tie a Figure-Eight-on-a-Bight knot in the climbing rope below you and clip it to your harness belay loop with a locking carabiner so that if a prusik cord ever slips or melts, you can never fall more than 2 meters.
  5. Crossing the Overhanging Snow Lip (The Crux): Because your weight pulled the climbing rope deep into the soft snow lip above you, your prusik knots will jam right into the snow wall at the lip. Stop 1 meter below the lip, reach above the lip to plant your ice axe deeply into the flat surface snow above the crevasse, or clip into a separate short rope loop / unweighted strand dropped over a padded axe shaft by your partner on top, step high into the ice wall with your crampons, and mantel onto the flat glacier.

Phase 3: Surface rescuer protocol (Building the anchor, transferring the load, and rigging the haul)

If you are on the surface holding your fallen partner's weight in the self-arrest position, do not panic and do not try to stand up and hand-over-hand pull a 90-kilogram (200-pound) climber over a snow lip: rope friction inside the snow lip multiplies the required pulling force by 200 to 300 percent, meaning it takes over 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of upward pull to move an 80-kilogram climber over an unpadded snow edge. Follow this disciplined 5-step rescue sequence:

Step 1: Build a Bombproof Snow or Ice Anchor While Holding the Fall

While keeping your body low in the self-arrest position holding the taut rope, reach to your harness with your free hand and construct your Primary Transfer Anchor right behind or beside you based on the glacier surface condition:

Glacier Surface Medium Best Anchor Type & Orientation Strength & Critical Placement Rules
Firm Summer Névé or Consolidated Hard Snow Snow Picket Driven Vertically/Angled (Mid-Clip ಅಥವಾ Top-Clip) Hammer the 60-cm (24-inch) aluminum snow picket into the snow at a 15- to 20-degree angle leaning away from the crevasse (70 degrees to the snow surface) so the top barely sticks out, or clip the middle cable/hole (Mid-Clip) and slice a narrow vertical slot in the snow in front of the picket for the sling.
Soft, Sugary, or Wet Afternoon Snow Horizontal Buried "Deadman / T-Slot" Snow Picket, Ice Axe, or Skis A vertical picket rips right through soft wet snow. Chop a horizontal trench 30 to 45 centimeters (12 to 18 inches) deep perpendicular to the rope, chop a narrow T-shaped slot forward toward the crevasse for the girth-hitched sling, lay the picket, spare ice axe, or skis flat horizontally in the trench, and stomp snow solidly over the top.
Bare Blue Glacial Ice (Late Summer / Dry Glacier) 13-cm to 21-cm Tubular Steel Ice Screw (V-Thread / Abalakov Backup) Clear away rotten white surface crust (dinner-plating) down to solid blue ice, and wind in a sharp Ice Screw angled 10 to 15 degrees with the hanger pointing toward the load (modern sharp ice screws hold their highest pull-out strength, over \(15\text{ kN}\), when angled 10 degrees with the pull so the load shears across the threads rather than levering the tube).

Step 2: Transfer the Victim's Weight from Your Harness to the Anchor ("Escaping the Belay")

  1. Clip an anchor runner sling from your newly placed Snow Picket or Ice Screw to a locking carabiner right in front of your harness.
  2. Tie a 3-Wrap Prusik, Klemheist, or Autoblock friction hitch (using 5-mm to 7-mm accessory cord, never slippery flat Dyneema webbing which slides on icy ropes) around the taut victim rope in front of you, OR clip a Petzl Micro Traxion / Camp Lift progress-capture pulley onto the taut rope, and clip it into the anchor locking carabiner.
  3. Push the friction hitch (or Micro Traxion) as far forward down the taut rope toward the crevasse as your arm can reach.
  4. Slowly inch your body forward 15 centimeters (6 inches) down the slope: watch the anchor picket/screw carefully as the friction hitch bites and smoothly transfers 100% of the victim's weight off your harness and onto the anchor.
  5. Once the climbing rope between your harness and the friction hitch goes completely slack, tie an Overhand / Figure-Eight-on-a-Bight backup knot in your slack rope and clip it to the anchor carabiner so you are still backed up, then unclip or untie if needed to build a Second Backed-Up Equalized Anchor 1 meter behind the first anchor.

Step 3: Approach and Pad the Crevasse Lip Safely

  1. Clip your personal belay loop into the excess climbing rope (anchored to the backed-up anchor) via a friction hitch so you cannot fall into the crevasse yourself if the lip collapses.
  2. Probe the snow ahead of you with your ice axe shaft or avalanche probe as you crawl to the edge until you locate the true solid ice wall vs. the overhanging snow bridge.
  3. Lay Lip Padding under the rope path: Slide a spare Ice Axe, Snow Picket, Ski, or Foam Sleeping Pad / Backpack horizontally along the edge of the lip so the hauling rope will roll smoothly over the hard metal/fabric surface instead of sawing deep into the snow.
  4. Shout clearly down to your partner: "ARE YOU OKAY? CAN YOU CLIMB THE ROPE OR TAKE A DROP LOOP?"

Step 4: Building the 3 Mechanical Advantage Haul Systems (2:1 Drop-Loop, 3:1 Z-Pulley, ಮತ್ತು 6:1 C+Z Pulley)

Compare and rig the right haul system for your team size and the victim's condition:

Haul System Name Mechanical Advantage (Theoretical vs. Real with Friction) When to Use It Step-by-Step Rigging Instructions
1. The 2:1 "Drop-Loop" (C-Pulley) 2:1 Theoretical (\(\sim 1.4:1\) to \(1.8:1\) real; 4:1 effect if victim pulls down on the anchored strand with their own arms) Fastest rescue (< 5 minutes) whenever the victim is conscious, uninjured, and you have enough spare rope on the surface to reach down to them. 1. Keep the original fall rope anchored securely at the surface.
2. Take the slack end of the rope on the surface, fold a bight (loop), and lower that bight down to the victim with a locking carabiner clipped into it.
3. The victim clips that single locking carabiner (or pulley) directly to their harness belay loop.
4. Anchor one leg of the dropped loop to your surface anchor (Micro Traxion), and pull upward on the other leg while the victim pulls themselves up the fixed leg.
2. The 3:1 "Z-Pulley" (Z-Drag) 3:1 Theoretical (\(\sim 1.8:1\) to \(2.4:1\) real with pulleys; requires only ⅓rd the rope length on the surface) When the victim is injured, unconscious, or cannot clip a drop-loop, OR when your rope is too short to reach down to the victim and back up again.
