Online Predator Contact, Minor Sextortion, and Emergency Image Removal

Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.

Discovering that a child or teenager is being targeted by an online predator or blackmailed in a financial or sexual sextortion scheme is a terrifying crisis for any family. In recent years, organized international cybercrime syndicates and online predators have targeted millions of youths across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox, TikTok, and gaming platforms, often using fake personas or AI-generated "nudify" deepfakes to demand money or additional photos under threat of leaking images to the child's school and followers. Acting in the first 30 minutes with unconditional emotional reassurance, zero ransom payments, legal evidence preservation, and cryptographic hash-blocking via NCMEC's Take It Down stops the extortion and protects your child's life.

  1. Reassure the child or teen immediately that they are NOT in trouble, that they are the victim of a crime, and that you will handle this together. Acute shame and fear of parental anger or school humiliation are the exact weapons extortionists use to drive teenagers into panic or self-harm within hours of the first threat. Say clearly: "You are safe, I love you, this is not your fault, and we are going to fix this right now."
  2. Stop all communication with the blackmailer and NEVER pay a single cent, gift card, cryptocurrency transfer, or additional photo. Paying a financial sextortionist or sending "one last photo" never results in deletion; instead, it flags the child on the criminal syndicate's ledger as a compliant payer and triggers immediate, escalating demands for thousands of dollars more.
  3. Preserve evidence of the predator's username, profile URL, payment handles, and chat text BEFORE blocking, but NEVER screenshot, forward, or email nude images of a minor. Photograph or screenshot the text threats, account handles, phone numbers, CashApp/Venmo/crypto wallet addresses, and full follower list, then block the predator and lock down or temporarily deactivate the child's social media accounts.
  4. Generate an on-device cryptographic hash at TakeItDown.ncmec.org before deleting any explicit image from the child's phone. Operated by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), TakeItDown.ncmec.org converts the image or video into a digital fingerprint (hash value) directly on your device without the photo ever leaving the phone, so Meta (Instagram/Facebook), Snapchat, TikTok, OnlyFans, Pornhub, and Discord automatically block and delete any attempt by the blackmailer to upload or DM it.
  5. Report the crime immediately to your national child exploitation clearinghouse and law enforcement. In the United States, file a report at NCMEC's CyberTipline (report.cybertip.org يا 1-800-843-5678) and call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (ic3.gov). In the United Kingdom, report to CEOP (ceop.police.uk). In Canada, report to Cybertip.ca. آسٽريليا ۾، رپورٽ ** ACCCE (accce.gov.au)**.

Part 1: Psychological first aid: why teens hide sextortion and how to talk to them

According to alerts issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the UK National Crime Agency (NCA), and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), financial sextortion targeting minor boys and girls aged 11 to 17 is one of the fastest-growing cybercrimes in the world, and has led to dozens of tragic youth suicides, sometimes within 2 to 6 hours of the blackmailer's first message.

How the 20-minute sextortion trap works

Parents are often shocked at how quickly a smart, cautious teenager gets trapped. Modern sextortion rarely involves months of slow grooming; instead, organized overseas cybercrime rings ("Yahoo Boys" and automated extortion farms) run an industrial 20-minute script:

  1. The Spoofed Approach (Minutes 0 to 5): An account posing as an attractive teenager of the same age (complete with stolen mirror selfies, tagged fake friends, and mutual school/local followers) sends a friendly DM on Instagram or Wizz/Yubo, then immediately asks to move the chat to Snapchat (where messages disappear and the victim feels safer).
  2. The Screenshot Setup (Minutes 5 to 15): Before asking for a photo, the scammer silently screenshots the victim's entire Instagram "Followers" and "Following" list (including parents, classmates, sports teammates, and schools). Then the scammer sends a pre-recorded fake live video or photo (or offers a mutual trade) to coax the teen into sending a single shirtless or explicit photo, or even takes a completely clothed photo from the teen's profile and runs it through an AI "nudify" deepfake generator.
  3. The Collage Shock (Minute 15 to 20): Within 30 seconds of receiving the photo, the mask drops. The scammer sends back a terrifying graphic collage showing the teen's explicit photo side-by-side with their face, their school's name, and screenshots of their actual classmates' and parents' Instagram accounts, along with a fake screenshot showing a group chat cursor hovering over the "Send" button, demanding $200 to $1,000 in Apple/Steam/Razer Gold gift cards, CashApp, Zelle, or Bitcoin within 10 minutes.

What to say (and what NEVER to say) when your child comes to you

When a child finally confesses that they sent a photo or are being blackmailed, their nervous system is in full fight-or-flight terror.

  • NEVER say: "What were you thinking?", "Why would you ever send a naked picture to a stranger?", "Give me your phone, you're grounded for a year," or "Your college/sports career is ruined." Reacting with anger or taking away their lifeline guarantees that if the blackmailer contacts them again on a secondary app, your child will hide it from you.
  • ALWAYS say:
    • "Thank you so much for telling me. Taking that step took huge courage, and the worst part is over now that I know."
    • "You did not do anything evil. Professional criminals tricked you using a script they run on thousands of teenagers every day. They are the criminals, not you."
    • "Even if the absolute worst-case scenario happens and a photo is sent to someone at school, life goes on, people forget, it is a crime to share it, and I will stand beside you 100 percent. Nothing on that phone is worth more than your life."

Recognizing traditional online grooming vs. rapid financial sextortion

While financial sextortion syndicates strike in 20 minutes for money, online sexual predators (groomers) often spend weeks or months building secret trust with a child aged 8 to 16 inside multiplayer games (Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Valorant, VRChat) and chat apps (Discord, Telegram, Snapchat, Kik, WhatsApp):

  1. The 6 Stages of Online Grooming:
    • Target Selection & Friendship Forming: The predator watches public game lobbies or youth servers for a child who mentions feeling lonely, misunderstood by parents, or wanting in-game currency (Robux, V-Bucks, Discord Nitro).
    • Gift Giving & Love-Bombing: Sending the child digital gift codes, skins, or cash via CashApp/PayPal creates immediate guilt and pressure ("After everything I bought for you, you won't even turn your camera on for me?").
    • Platform Migration & Secrecy: Moving the child off a moderated game chat onto an encrypted or disappearing-message app (Discord DM, Telegram, Snapchat, or a hidden "vault" app disguised as a calculator on the child's phone) and driving a wedge between the child and their parents ("Your parents don't understand you like I do; if they see our chat they'll take your PC away").
    • Desensitization & Sexualization: Gradually introducing sexual jokes, Truth-or-Dare games, or adult pornography to normalize explicit requests before asking for the first "innocent" photo in swimwear or underwear.
    • Blackmail Maintenance (Coercive Control): Using the first mild photo as blackmail material to force the child to produce increasingly extreme videos on livestreams or meet in person.
  2. Behavioral Red Flags Parents Should Watch For:
    • Rapidly switching tabs (Alt + Tab), tilting the phone screen away, or becoming panicked and defensive when a parent walks into the bedroom.
    • Receiving mysterious physical packages, food deliveries (DoorDash/UberEats), or unexplained digital currency (Robux, Discord Nitro, new game skins) that you did not purchase.
    • Late-night voice or video calls from behind a locked bedroom door with someone whose voice sounds older or who refuses to appear on camera.

Before you block the predator or deactivate your child's social media accounts, take 10 minutes to capture the digital evidence law enforcement needs to subpoena the platform and trace the extortionist, while strictly avoiding illegal reproduction of minor explicit imagery. For adult blackmail and general harassment steps, see online harassment, doxxing, and cyberbullying ۽ جنسي ڏاڍائي ۽ آن لائن بليڪ ميل.

What to capture vs. what NEVER to capture

Evidence Category How to Preserve It Safely & Legally Why Investigators Need It
1. Predator's Account Identity & Permanent ID Open the predator's profile page and take a screenshot showing their exact @username handle, display name, bio, follower count, and full web URL (tap "Share Profile -> Copy Link" and paste the full URL into a Notes document, as criminals change their @username display handle every hour while the underlying numeric Account ID in the URL stays the same). Platforms (Meta, Snap, Discord) locate accounts by exact numeric User ID or URL and timestamp, not by a display name that can be changed.
2. Financial Extortion Trails (The #1 Way Police Catch Sextortionists) Screenshot every single message where the scammer gives a CashApp $cashtag, Venmo handle, Zelle phone/email, PayPal address, bank IBAN/routing number, Bitcoin/USDT wallet address, or gift card request. Even when scammers hide behind VPNs on social media, their money-mule CashApp, bank, and crypto off-ramp accounts are tied to real KYC identities and phone numbers.
3. Text Chat Demands & Timestamps Screenshot the written extortion demands, dates, and times (in Snapchat, tap and hold on saved chat lines or take a photo of the child's phone screen using your parent phone so the scammer does not get a "Screenshot taken" notification). Establishes felony extortion / coercion elements under criminal law.
4. Explicit Photos/Videos of the Minor DO NOT screenshot, DO NOT forward, DO NOT upload to cloud drives, and DO NOT photograph the nude image on the screen. Keep the file strictly on the child's device only long enough to hash it via TakeItDown.ncmec.org and show an investigating officer in person. Copying, transmitting, or cloud-syncing CSAM is illegal and risks leaking the file further.

Why using a second phone to photograph the screen beats taking an in-app screenshot on Snapchat or Instagram

On Snapchat and Instagram Vanish Mode / View-Once DMs, pressing the phone's hardware screenshot buttons immediately sends an alert in the chat window telling the extortionist: "[Child's Name] took a screenshot of Chat." That alert often provokes an angry scammer waiting on the other end to retaliate immediately. Instead, turn on Airplane Mode briefly or use a parent's separate smartphone camera held above the child's phone screen to take clear photos of the text chat and profile URLs silently without triggering any in-app screenshot alert.

Part 3: How to block image uploads worldwide using NCMEC's "Take It Down"

Before you delete the compromised photo or video off your child's phone, use the free, confidential, government-backed Take It Down service operated by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

How TakeItDown.ncmec.org works (100% On-Device Privacy)

Many parents hesitate to use an online removal tool because they are understandably terrified of uploading their child's private photo to a website. Take It Down NEVER uploads your child's photo or video to NCMEC or to the internet:

HOW NCMEC "TAKE IT DOWN" PROTECTS PRIVACY (PHOTO NEVER LEAVES YOUR PHONE)

       +---> [OnlyFans / Pornhub / MindGeek / Reddit / Google / Mega]
(Platforms automatically scan and block any file matching that hash in <1 sec)

Step-by-step guide to hashing and blocking a minor's image (Real or AI-Generated)

  1. Open https://takeitdown.ncmec.org inside the web browser on the device where the original photo or video is stored (works for anyone who was under 18 years old when the explicit photo or video was created, including AI-generated deepfakes of a minor).
  2. Tap "Get Started" and answer the 2 eligibility questions (confirming the person depicted was under 18).
  3. Select the exact image(s) or video(s) from the phone's camera roll:
    • Tip: If the child sent 3 different photos or a 10-second video clip, select all of them (including any cropped version or collage if saved on the device) so every variation receives its own cryptographic hash.
  4. Wait 5 seconds while your phone browser calculates the hash locally, then click Submit:
    • Only the numerical hash code is transmitted to NCMEC's secure database, which is shared immediately with participating platforms (Meta/Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Discord, Yubo, OnlyFans, Pornhub, X/Twitter, Reddit, and cloud hosts).
  5. What if the photo was already deleted from the child's phone and only the blackmailer has a copy?
    • Check the phone's "Recently Deleted" / Trash album in the Photos app (iOS and Android keep deleted photos for 30 days) or inside Snapchat "My Eyes Only" / Memories first.
    • If the child no longer has a local copy of the file anywhere, TakeItDown.ncmec.org cannot generate a local hash, but you must still file a full report at report.cybertip.org (NCMEC CyberTipline) and report the predator's account directly inside Instagram/Snapchat/Discord, because the platforms themselves can hash the image directly from the predator's server-side chat logs once reported.

Part 4: Platform lockdown, account deactivation, and reporting directories

Once you have photographed the predator's profile URL and text demands and hashed the media on TakeItDown.ncmec.org, cut off every avenue the blackmailer has to reach your child or their school friends.

Step-by-step social media containment

  1. Report the predator's account inside the app BEFORE blocking them:
    • Use the platform's in-app Report -> Nudity / Sexual Exploitation of a Minor / Blackmail flow on the specific chat thread. Reporting the chat thread sends a cryptographic snapshot of the last 30 server-side messages directly to the platform's Trust & Safety Child Safety team (which automatically forwards a legal preservation packet to NCMEC).
  2. Block the predator, then Lock Down or Temporarily Deactivate the child's account:
    • Why simple blocking is not enough: Extortionists immediately create a second burner account (@username_2) to search for the child's handle again.
    • Change the child's @username handle completely, switch the account to Private, set "Who can message me / add me to group chats" to No One / Friends Only, hide the Followers/Following list, or better yet, Temporarily Deactivate the child's Instagram/Snapchat/TikTok account for 2 to 4 weeks. When an extortionist sees that the victim's account no longer exists ("User Not Found") and they cannot contact the victim to demand money, in over 90 percent of financial sextortion cases the scammer immediately moves on to another target without ever leaking the photo, because leaking a photo takes effort, burns their burner accounts via platform automated CSAM bans, and makes them zero money once communication is dead.
  3. Warn parents or trusted friends if a leak actually occurs:
    • If the blackmailer actually sends the image into an Instagram or Snapchat group chat with 5 or 10 classmates before getting banned, tell those classmates (or their parents) immediately: "Do NOT open, screenshot, or forward that message; report the chat for child exploitation and delete it immediately." Remind teenagers that forwarding an explicit image of a minor classmate, even as gossip, is a serious crime.

How to work with your child's school administration and youth resource officer if an image spreads at school

When a predator or peer leaks an explicit photo or AI-generated deepfake into a high school or middle school group chat, secondary peer sharing can spread across a student body within two class periods unless you mobilize the school's legal duty of care immediately:

  1. Request an urgent private meeting with the School Principal, Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) / Title IX Coordinator, and School Resource Officer (SRO) before first bell:
    • Do not send the image to any school official. Bring only the written police report / NCMEC CyberTipline reference number and the list of student handles or group chats where the image was dropped.
  2. Ask the Principal and SRO to issue an immediate school-wide digital amnesty and non-forwarding directive:
    • Experienced school administrators and youth police officers handle peer-spread sextortion incidents by making a calm, clear announcement (without ever naming the victim) warning students that anyone who receives an explicit image of a minor must delete it immediately without forwarding or showing their screen, and that any student who AirDrops, texts, or reposts such an image faces mandatory disciplinary expulsion and felony CSAM charges, while students who come forward to have a received message deleted by the SRO face zero punishment.
  3. Establish a written School Safety and Academic Accommodation Plan:
    • Arrange for your child to take a few days of excused absence if needed, obtain a Hall Pass allowing them to step into the school counselor's office at any moment during the school day without asking permission in front of the class, and require school staff to separate your child from any classmate who participated in the harassment.

اڪثر پڇيا ويا سوال

Will my child be arrested or charged with a crime for taking or sending a nude photo of themselves if we report the blackmailer to the police?

No. Law enforcement agencies (including the FBI, DOJ, NCA/CEOP in the UK, RCMP in Canada, and AFP in Australia) explicitly recognize minors targeted by grooming or sextortion as crime victims, not perpetrators. Prosecutors and police child-exploitation units exist to pursue the predators and extortionists blackmailing children, and reporting a sextortion crime to NCMEC's CyberTipline or the FBI will never result in a child victim being prosecuted for being coerced into sending an image of themselves.

Do financial sextortion scammers usually follow through on their threat to send the photo to everyone if we refuse to pay and block them?

In the vast majority of financial sextortion cases, organized scammers do not release the photos once the victim blocks them without paying. Financial sextortion syndicates operate like call-center businesses looking for quick money; actually uploading or DMing an explicit image of a minor across Instagram or Snapchat triggers automated PhotoDNA/CSAM detection algorithms that immediately ban the scammer's precious aged burner accounts, costing the scammer their tools while earning them zero dollars once they know the victim is gone and unreachable. By contrast, victims who pay even $50 are kept on the hook for weeks and face a much higher risk of repeated harassment.

What if the predator never received a real nude photo of my child, but used an AI "nudify" app on a normal school photo from their Instagram?

Both criminal law and NCMEC's `TakeItDown.ncmec.org` treat AI-generated sexually explicit deepfakes of identifiable minors with the exact same urgency as real photographs. Generating, possessing, or threatening to distribute photorealistic AI-generated Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) or non-consensual intimate deepfakes of a minor is a serious crime across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union, and Australia. If the blackmailer sent your child a screenshot of the AI-generated fake image, you can hash that exact image file on `TakeItDown.ncmec.org` so platforms block it globally, and report the extortionist to the CyberTipline (`report.cybertip.org`) and FBI (`ic3.gov`).

In addition to reporting the URL to NCMEC's CyberTipline (`report.cybertip.org`), Google provides a dedicated expedited removal form specifically for images of individuals currently under 18 (or images taken when they were under 18). Visit Google Search Help's **"Remove images of minors from Google search results"** request portal, submit the exact image URLs and search result links, and Google will delist the imagery globally from Search and Google Images, even if the photo is not explicit.
