Step 2: How to safely dismount a stairlift stuck mid-staircase¶
If the stairlift will not move after checking the swivel lock, footrest bumpers, and thermal breaker:
- Case A: The rider CANNOT walk stairs safely (Wheelchair user or high fall risk):
- Do NOT try to carry an adult down a narrow staircase in your arms, and do not unbuckle their seatbelt over steep stairs. Carrying an adult around a stairlift rail frequently causes both caregiver and rider to fall head-first.
- Keep the rider buckled safely in the seat. Either use the Manual Hand-Winding Wheel (Step 3 below) to wind the carriage slowly to the landing, OR call your local fire department's non-emergency dispatch line (or 911 / 112 / 999 if medical needs exist) for a Fire Department Lift Assist. Firefighters carry tracked evacuation stair chairs and harnesses to transfer the rider safely in minutes.
- Case B: The rider CAN walk stairs stably while holding a handrail:
- Turn the stairlift Master Power Switch to OFF so the chair cannot lurch into motion while the rider is standing up.
- Have a spotter stand one step below the stairlift while the rider holds the wall handrail firmly.

- Reset the Interior Car Gate and Emergency Stop Switch first:
- Ko te Whakawhiti Whero "STOP": Tirohia mehemea i tukitukia te patene whero EMERGENCY STOP i runga i te papa o te waka. Toia, whiria ranei ki te RUN, tatari mo te 5 hēkona, ka pehi i to patene ** Whenua / Papa Tuatahi**.
- The Interior Gate / Light Curtain: Push the folding accordion gate all the way shut until it clicks into the jamb latch. If your elevator has an invisible infrared light curtain, make sure your coat hem, purse strap, dog leash, or walker wheel is not sticking 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) across the front threshold beam.
- Press the LOWEST floor button for Battery Backup Lowering: Most post-2005 residential elevators include a 12V/24V Battery Lowering UPS. During a power outage, pressing upper floor buttons does nothing, but pressing the LOWEST floor button (Floor 1 or Basement) activates battery lowering to bring the car to the bottom landing and unlock the door interlock automatically.
How a family member OUTSIDE the elevator can manually lower the car to the bottom floor¶
If a power outage or control board failure leaves someone inside a residential elevator and the in-cab buttons do not respond, a helper outside can lower the cab gently to the lowest floor in two minutes using the controls inside the Elevator Machine / Controller Closet:
For a Hydraulic Residential Elevator (Most Common):¶
- Turn the Main AC Electrical Disconnect Lever (and Battery Switch) to OFF: Located on the wall beside the hydraulic pump tank. Turning power off prevents the electric pump from kicking on to fight the manual valve.
- Pull the Red Manual Lowering Valve Knob slowly:
- Locate the bright red pull-knob or T-handle labeled "EMERGENCY MANUAL LOWERING" on the metal valve manifold atop (or inside) the hydraulic fluid tank.
- Pull (or turn counterclockwise) the Red Valve Knob slowly and hold it: Hydraulic oil will hiss softly back into the reservoir as gravity lowers the cab down the shaft at 8 to 15 centimeters (3 to 6 inches) per second.
- Release the red knob when the hissing stops: Once the pressure gauge drops to zero and the hissing stops, the cab is resting on the bottom floor landing. Let go of the red knob immediately so its spring closes the valve, then open the bottom floor hallway door.
For a Pneumatic Vacuum Elevator (Clear Round Tube):¶
- Automatic gravity air-bleed during power failure: When house power cuts out, a calibrated mechanical orifice at the top of the polycarbonate tube bleeds atmospheric air slowly into the upper chamber, floating the cab smoothly down to the ground floor without batteries or cables.
For a Winding-Drum or Geared Traction Cable Elevator:¶
- Turn OFF the Main 240V AC Disconnect Breaker first.
- Use the Battery Backup Lowering Toggle inside the Controller Box: Newer cable units have an Emergency Battery Down button inside the wall cabinet. On older winding-drum units that require a mechanical motor brake-release wrench, do not prop open the motor brake unless trained by your installer, as releasing a non-counterweighted drum brake uncontrolled can let the cab accelerate; call your elevator service company or fire department instead.
How to use the Emergency Hoistway Door Unlocking Key safely¶
Every residential elevator hallway door has a small round keyhole or narrow pin hole on the outside face of the door frame (or above the handle) that opens the mechanical Hoistway Door Interlock (such as a GAL Type N, EMI, or Savaria drop-key latch).
Warning
Look and feel before stepping into an elevator doorway opened with an emergency drop-key. The emergency hoistway key overrides the safety lock that normally prevents a hallway door from opening when the elevator car is on a different floor. Before inserting the metal drop-key or flat blade to unlatch a residential elevator door: 1. Whakawetohia te Kaiwhati Whakamutua Elevator Matua kia kore ai te motuka e neke i te wa e tuwhera ana te kuaha. 2. Crack the hallway door open just 5 centimeters (2 inches) and shine a flashlight inside first to verify that the elevator cab is actually sitting right there at that floor level (and that you are not opening a door into an empty 6-meter / 20-foot vertical shaft drop). 3. Maukati ano i nga wa katoa me te whakamatau i nga tatau katoa o te horoa ma te toia kaha ki runga i te kakau i muri i te katinga hei whakau i te raka miihini kua mau.
Pouaka Pouaka Pouaka Pouaka Roopuu (Whakarewa whakamahau / VPL)¶
Tahurihia te patene whero ¼ huri te karaka (i te ahunga o nga pere) kia puta ra ano ki waho me te tangi nui kapo, katahi ka ngana ano ki te whakahuri rocker UP/DOWN.
- Check the Under-Platform Safety Pan (Obstruction Sensor): The entire bottom metal belly pan underneath a wheelchair platform lift is suspended on four sensitive microswitches designed to stop the lift immediately if it touches a pet, a foot, or snow/leaves on the ground. Look underneath the platform: if pine cones, gravel, packed snow, or a garden hose have accumulated under the lift pan, or if the sheet-metal pan is frozen to the concrete pad in winter, clear the debris away and lift upward gently on the bottom pan edge to make sure the microswitches click freely.
- Check the Top Platform Gate and Bottom Entry Ramp Interlocks: The lift will not move unless the upper landing gate is pulled completely shut and latched, and the folding access ramp (or platform gate) is in its fully raised position.
- Activate the Emergency Manual Lowering Device inside the tower column:
- On AC/DC Battery-Powered Screw-Drive Lifts: If the primary rocker switch on the platform fails, open the small keyed access panel on the side of the vertical mast tower (or use the lower call station override switch) to engage the auxiliary battery-lowering circuit, OR insert the manual hex crank handle into the top cap of the vertical mast tower to wind the ACME screw rod down manually.
- On Hydraulic Platform Lifts: Open the mast access panel, turn off the main power switch, and pull the red manual hydraulic bleed valve to lower the platform gently to the ground pad.
Preventative safety checklist for homes with elevators and mobility lifts¶
Run through this safety inspection today if your home, vacation rental, or aging parent's house has a residential elevator, stairlift, or wheelchair lift:
- Measure the Hoistway Door Gap on every floor of your home elevator right now: Close the exterior hallway door and measure from the back face of that solid door to the front edge of the closed interior accordion car gate (or to the front edge of the cab sill). If that space is wider than 10 centimeters (4 inches), order and mount rigid Hoistway Door Space Guards on the inside face of every hallway door immediately. Over 30 major residential elevator manufacturers (via the CPSC) provide free or low-cost space guards to eliminate child crushing hazards.
- Test that NO hallway elevator door can be opened when the car is on another floor: Send the elevator to the 2nd floor, then walk to the 1st floor and pull firmly on the 1st-floor elevator hallway door handle. It must remain 100 percent locked. If any hallway door opens when the elevator car is not parked at that floor, the mechanical door interlock is broken or bypassed: lock the room or door immediately, turn off the elevator breaker, and call a licensed elevator technician before anyone uses the house.
- Install a working hands-free cellular or VoIP-battery phone inside the elevator cab: Millions of households cancelled their copper landline telephone service over the past decade without realizing it disconnected the emergency phone inside their home elevator. Pick up the phone inside your elevator cab today and verify it dials out; if your landline is gone, connect the elevator phone line to a cellular gateway box with battery backup and mount a magnetic spare mobile phone charger inside the cab.
- Label the Main Elevator Disconnect Breaker and Red Manual Lowering Valve clearly: Hang a laminated luggage tag on the red hydraulic lowering valve in your basement/utility closet and put a bright label on your electrical panel breaker so any caregiver, babysitter, or firefighter can locate them in 10 seconds.
- Replace internal 12V SLA batteries every 3 to 4 years before they fail mid-staircase: Both stairlifts and elevator battery-lowering UPS units use sealed lead-acid batteries that degrade quietly after 36 to 48 months. Write the installation date on the battery casing with a permanent marker and replace them proactively every 3.5 years.
Pātai auau¶
Why did my stairlift suddenly start beeping continuously every few seconds after I got off?¶
A continuous steady beep coming from a parked stairlift is almost always the **"Off-Charge Warning Alarm."** Stairlifts run on two internal 12-volt batteries that only recharge when the chair carriage is parked directly on top of the metal brass charging contacts at the very top or very bottom of the rail. If you stop the chair 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) short of the end stop, or if someone accidentally unplugged the low-voltage wall transformer or tripped the wall GFCI outlet, the stairlift beeps to warn you that its batteries will drain dead overnight if left there. Drive the chair all the way onto the parking contact until the charging indicator light turns solid green, and verify the wall transformer is plugged into a live outlet.
Can you suffocate or run out of oxygen if you get trapped inside a home elevator for several hours?¶
No, it is physically impossible to run out of oxygen inside a standard residential elevator cab. Even when both the interior car gate and the exterior hallway door are closed, residential elevators are required by safety codes (ASME A17.1 Section 5.3) to have open ventilation grilles and natural perimeter air gaps into the hoistway shaft, which holds thousands of liters of breathable air connected to the house. The real health risk during a multi-hour entrapment is dehydration, missed time-critical medications (such as insulin), or overheating if the elevator shaft is located on a sun-baked exterior wall during a summer power outage.
How do I lower a hydraulic home elevator manually during a power outage if the backup battery is dead?¶
Every hydraulic residential elevator has a non-electric mechanical override valve located on the hydraulic pump tank inside the machine closet, basement, or garage. First, switch the **Main AC Electrical Disconnect Lever to OFF** so the pump cannot restart unexpectedly. Next, open the hydraulic pump box and locate the **red pull-knob (or red valve stem) labeled "Manual Lowering Valve."** Pull and hold the red knob gently outward: hydraulic fluid will drain smoothly back into the reservoir tank, allowing gravity to lower the elevator car slowly down to the lowest floor landing. As soon as the car touches down at the bottom floor and the fluid sound stops, release the red knob and open the bottom floor hallway door.
He aha te whakamaumaharatanga o te ararewa noho "gap tatau" me pehea taku tirotiro mena kei te haumaru taku ararewa kaainga mo nga tamariki?¶
