Hard Drive Failure and Emergency Data Recovery¶
Mechanical hard drive crashes, solid-state drive (SSD) controller corruption, or corrupted file systems can lock away critical personal, financial, or legal documents.
Do this now¶
- Stop using the drive immediately. If a mechanical hard drive makes clicking, grinding, or buzzing sounds, power down the computer or disconnect the external drive. Repeated attempts to read a failing drive physically score and destroy magnetic platters.
- Do not run chkdsk or disk repair utilities on physical failures. Running automated repair utilities (such as chkdsk or First Aid) on drives with physical read/write head damage causes permanent data loss.
- Check for cloud or secondary backup copies. Verify if files exist on cloud drives (OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox), external backup drives, or email attachments.
- Consult cleanroom data recovery specialists for vital data. For physical hardware failures containing irreplaceable data, send the drive to professional cleanroom recovery services rather than opening the drive shell yourself.
... note "The 3-2-1 backup rule" Protect critical documents by maintaining 3 total copies of important files across 2 different media types (such as local SSD and cloud storage), with 1 copy located offsite.
