Bi lez û bez qutbûna tekerê otobanê û têkçûna rêvekirinê¶
Hejmarên rewşa awarte li gorî welat cuda ne. Ev rûpel 911, jimareya Dewletên Yekbûyî û Kanada bikar tîne. Gelek welatên din 112, 999, an hejmareke din bikar tînin. Hejmara welatê xwe bibînin.
Dema ku lastîkek biteqe an alîkariya rêvekirinê bi leza 100 km/h (62 mph) an zûtir têk biçe, însiyata saxbûna mirov li we diqîre ku hûn li pedala frenê bixin û çerxa dîreksiyonê ber bi milê xwe ve bikşînin.
Braking giraniyê dide ser ekseya pêş, tiryakê defkirî di bin rimê de diperçiqîne, û tavilê spinout an gemarê çêdike.
- Pêşkêşê domdar bihêlin an gazê bi sivikî 1 heta 2 çirkeyan bişkînin: Bi kurtî zexta lezkerê bidomînin an bi nermî zêde bikin, rast piştî ku lêdanê giraniyê ber bi paş ve vediguhêze ser eksera paşîn û leza pêş bi kar tîne da ku wesayitek masîgir rast bikişîne ser riya we.
- ** Li navenda riya xweya niha dûr li pêş binihêrin **: Çavên xwe 200 metre (650 ling) rasterast li ser xeta xwe bidin ber çavan û ketina rêwerzên piçûk û nerm bikar bînin da ku wesayit rast bihêlin dema ku hêdî hêdî lingê xwe ji lezkerê rakin.
- ** Berî ku dest bi frenê bikî, bi xwezayî di binê 50 km/h (30 mph) de dakeve **: Bila kêşa aerodînamîka û berxwedana gêrkirinê wesayîtê di rêça rêwîtiya we de hêdî bike. Tenê gava ku otomobîl aram be û bi leza 50 km/h (30 mph) bimeşe, zexta frenê ya nerm û pêşkeftî bicîh bikin.
- **Tenê di bin 30 km/h (20 mph) de sînyalan bidin ser milê xwe û xwe bidin ser milê hişk **: Fîroşkên xwe yên xeternak ên çar alî çalak bikin, neynikên xwe kontrol bikin, û tenê piştî ku hêdî hêdî hêdî bimeşin an leza bazdanê bidin ser milên xwe yên asfaltkirî, dûv re ji deriyên rêwiyan ên li pişt cerdevan derkevin.
Tu carî bi leza otobanê xwe bernedin ser çîmenek nermik an li ser milê gewr
Li bendê bin heya ku leza we dakeve binê 30 km/h (20 mph) berî ku hûn ji asfalta asfaltkirî derbaz bibin li ser çîçeka neqişandî an milê ax li ser lastîkek qelandî. Gava ku çemek çerxa pola an alumînyûmê ya vekirî bi axek nerm an jî bi leza bilind davêje qiraxa peyarê, ew wekî lengerek mekanîkî ya ku di nav axê de dikole û SUV, kamyonên pîkap û otomobîlên rêwiyan dixe nav qezayên pir-dorpêçkirî yên tavilê.

Dînamîk û fîzîka wesayîtê ya tîrêjek otobanê¶
Dema ku tîrêjek radîkal a bi zextê di leza 100 heta 130 km/h (62 heta 80 mph) de diqelişe an ji hev veqetîne, sê hêzên fizîkî yên wêranker di nav 200 milîçirkeyan de li şasê dixin:
- Dakêşana gêrkirinê ya asîmetrîk (Yaw Moment): Tekerek bifirekirî bi xitimîna pir kêm dizivire (hevsengek berxwedana gerilandinê bi qasî 0,01). Di cih de lastîkek diteqe, dîwarên gomî yên hilweşandî û kemberên pola yên maqûl di binê çemê çerxa metala giran de diqelişin, kêşana gêrkirinê li ser wê goşeyê ** 10-20 carî ** zêde dikin. Ger tîrêja pêş-rastê biteqe, ew kêşana girseyî mîna lengerek ku li milê rastê yê gerîdeyê daketî tevdigere, û torkek hêzdar diafirîne ku pozê gerîdeyê bi tundî ber bi rastê ve ber bi xendek an rêça trafîkê ya cîran ve diherike.
- Daketina giraniya quncikê dînamîk û rijandina çember-asfalt: Kuncê ku lê teqiyaye tavilê 7,5 heta 12,5 santîmetre (3 heta 5 înç) ber bi peyarê ve dadikeve, eksena gerîlêdana wesayitê ber bi quncikê xerabûyî ve diajon.
- Çima destdana pedala frenê dibe sedema gerandina kujer:
- Di rêwîtiyek domdar de, bi qasî 55% ê giraniya gerîdeya rêwiyan li ser eksê pêşîn û 45% jî li ser axê paşîn dimîne.
- Tavilê ajokarek tirsnak bi leza otobanê pedala frenê dixe, ** veguheztina giraniya dirêjî** ji% 75 heta 80% ji tevaya girseya wesayîtê ber bi tekerên pêş ve diherike dema ku giraniyê ji lastîkên paşîn radike.
- Di dema teqîna pêşiyê de: Lêxistina frênan tekera pêş a defkirî bi tevahî li binê rînga çerxa metalî diperçiqîne, lêva tûj a çemê metalî mîna çîçekê di asfaltê de dihêle û çerxa dîreksiyonê bi tundî ji destên ajovan derdixe.
- During a rear blowout: Slamming the brakes unloads the rear axle, breaking the lateral grip of the remaining intact rear tire. Because the front tires have heavy grip while the rear axle has zero lateral grip, the back end of the vehicle swings violently forward in a 180-degree oversteer spin, sliding the vehicle broadside down the highway where the wheel rims trip and launch the vehicle into a barrel roll.
Why 1 to 2 seconds of light throttle saves the vehicle¶
Crash reconstruction research by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Michelin tire safety engineers, and police pursuit driving academies confirms a critical, counter-intuitive rule: holding steady throttle or pressing the accelerator lightly for 1 to 2 seconds immediately after a blowout stabilizes the car.
- Prevents abrupt engine-braking drag: Lifting your foot completely off the gas pedal at 110 km/h (70 mph) causes immediate engine compression braking, which pitches weight forward onto the damaged tire just like hitting the brakes.
- Shifts weight rearward and straightens yaw: A brief 1-to-2-second application of light throttle keeps vertical load planted on the rear tires and provides forward thrust along the vehicle's centerline, overcoming the asymmetric drag of the shredded tire long enough for your brain to process the event and lock both hands onto the steering wheel.
- Once the car is tracking straight down your lane (after 1 to 2 seconds), smoothly and gradually ease your foot off the accelerator and let wind resistance slow the car down.
Front tire blowout versus rear tire blowout: clinical comparison¶
While the fundamental six-step recovery protocol applies to every blowout, front-axle and rear-axle blowouts produce very different tactile feedback through the steering wheel and seat cushion.
| Dynamic Characteristic | Front Tire Blowout (Steer Axle) | Rear Tire Blowout (Drive / Trailing Axle) | Dual-Wheel / Trailer Tire Blowout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate acoustic & tactile feel | Loud bang followed by an immediate, violent pull on the steering wheel toward the side of the blown tire; front corner of hood dips visibly. | Loud bang followed by heavy drumming vibration through the seat and floorboard; steering wheel feels light while the rear end sways or fishtails side to side. | Loud cannon-like boom beneath the cargo bed or behind the tow vehicle; trailer begins rhythmic lateral swaying (snaking). |
| Primary loss-of-control mechanism | Sudden lane departure into oncoming traffic, bridge abutments, or soft roadside ditches when the front rim digs in. | High-speed oversteer spinout (180° swap) followed by a side-trip rollover, especially severe in SUVs, minivans, and pickup trucks. | Trailer jackknife or tow-vehicle rear axle pendulum swing if the driver slams the tow-vehicle foot brake. |
| Correct steering technique | Bi her du destên xwe ve li ser berevajî arasteya kêşanê bi hêz bikişîne da ku bi zorê çerxên pêşiyê rasterast ber bi jêr ve nîşan bidin. | Li hêlekê dûr binihêrin û serrastkirinên berevajî-rêveberiya piçûk, bilez, nerm li ber hêlîna paşîn bêyî rastkirina zêde bikin. | Rêbenda wesayîta kêşanê rasterast bimire; ** tu carî çerxê nexapînin ** da ku li hember hejandina trailerê bisekinin. |
| ** Çalakiya gaz û firnê ** | Ji frenan dûr bimînin; 1 heta 2 saniye tîrêjê ronahiyê bicîh bikin da ku giraniya xwe ji quncika pêşîn a pelçiqandî dûr bixe; peravê li jêr 50 km/h (30 mph) daket. |
| ** Bandora Kontrola Stability Electronic (ESC) ** | ESC bixweber frenên paşîn ên takekesî dixe da ku li hember kêşana yaw bisekine, bi şertê ku ajokar çerxa bêserûber nekeve. | ESC goşeya şûştinê ya paşîn nas dike û çerxa pêşîn a derve dişewitîne da ku zivirîna dûvika masî bigire. | Trailer Sway Control (TSC) frenên kesane modul dike da ku ossilasyonê bitemirîne. |
Cûreyên wesayîtên taybetî: SUV, kamyonên bazirganî, motorsîklet û trailer¶
1. SUV-yên giran-navend-bilind, kamyonên pîkap, û van 15 rêwiyan¶
Wesayîtên bikêrhatî yên werzîşê, kamyonên hilkirî, kamyonên kampê, û kamyonên 15 rêwiyan xwedan navendek girseyê ya bilind û rêjeyek rêgez-firahî-bi-bilindî ya tengtir in (Faktora Îstiqrara Statîk). Dema ku lastîkek paşîn bi leza 110 km/h (70 mph) li ser SUV an vana bi giranî barkirî diteqe, wesayit ji bo hilweşînên bêserûber û bi rîm xwedan bendek pir kêmtir e. Ger hûn ajotvanek SUV an kamyonek diajon, qet hewl nedin ku di qonaxa destpêkê ya beravêjê de rê biguhezînin: Di riya xweya heyî de li navendê mirî bimînin û roniyên xetereyê dibiriqînin heya ku leza we dakeve binê 40 km/h (25 mph).
2. Kamyonên bazirganî yên giran, RVs, û otobus (Pêkhatina rê-axle)¶
Li ser motorxanî, otobus, an nîv-kamyonek pola A ya ku giraniya wan ji 10,000 heta 36,000 kîlogram (22,000 heta 80,000 pound) ye, ** tîrêjek tîrêjê ya pêş-axa rê** çêdike ku ger tiliyên tiliyên ajokar di hundurê wan de bişkênin, torkek mezin a kişandinê çêdike. - Di saet 9 û 3'an de tiliyên xwe li derve rînga dîreksiyonê bihêlin. - Ger lastîkek rêwerê ya pêş li RV an kamyonek giran biteqe, ** 2 heta 3 çirkeyan li ser pedala lezê xwarê bavêjin ** da ku giraniya xwe ji eksê rêwerê yê pêş yê hilweşiyayî veguhezînin û pompeya rêberiya hêzê ya hîdrolîk hêzdar bikin da ku li ser kêşana tîrêja ku pê ketî bi ser bikeve, dûv re dema ku karûbarê motorê hêdî hêdî diqede û bi tevahî disekine. (Jake brake) heta ku lez dakeve binê 40 km/h (25 mph).
3. Motorsîklet (Pêşbûna tîrêja pêş û paşîn li ser du tekeran)¶
Li ser motorsîkletê dahûrandinek ji nişka ve an biteqin rehetbûna laşê jorîn bi dîsîplîn hewce dike: - **Bêyî ku milên xwe girêbidin destên destan bi domdarî bigirin **: Bila destên we wekî şokkêşan tevbigerin da ku hejandina serê pêşiyê (teng-slapper wobble) şil bikin. - Never touch the front brake lever if the front tire is flat: Applying the front brake on a deflated motorcycle tire folds the rubber bead off the rim and dumps the front wheel onto the asphalt immediately. - Shift your body weight backward toward the rear of the saddle, pull in the clutch or roll off the throttle smoothly so engine braking does not jerk the rear tire, and use gentle, progressive rear brake only (if the front tire blew) or gentle front brake only (if the rear tire blew) once upright and moving slowly in a straight line.
Runaway vehicle: what to do when the accelerator pedal sticks¶
Unintended acceleration or a runaway throttle occurs when a bunched-up rubber floor mat traps the gas pedal against the floor, a mechanical throttle return spring breaks, ice or debris jams the throttle body, or an electronic drive-by-wire sensor faults. If you need full dedicated coverage of runaway vehicles, review stuck accelerator pedal and runaway vehicle survival.
Execute these five life-saving actions in exact order if your car refuses to stop accelerating:
- Shift into Neutral (
N) immediately: Push a console automatic shifter one notch forward fromDtoN, pull a column stalk one notch towardN, hold an electronic rotary/push-button selector inNfor 1 to 2 seconds, or push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor in a manual transmission vehicle. Shifting into Neutral mechanically disconnects the roaring engine from the drive wheels in less than one second. - Do NOT reach down or look at the floor to free the trapped pedal: Taking your eyes off the highway or unbuckling to reach down under the dashboard at 120 km/h (75 mph) causes instant lane departure crashes.
- Press the brake pedal with ONE continuous, heavy, unrelenting push (never pump):
- Power brakes in gasoline cars rely on engine intake manifold vacuum to multiply your foot pressure. When a throttle is stuck wide open, the intake manifold has zero vacuum left.
- Your brake booster canister holds enough stored vacuum for only one or two presses. If you pump the brake pedal on and off repeatedly, you vent all stored vacuum into the atmosphere, and the pedal becomes rock-hard.
- Instead, plant both feet if necessary on the brake pedal and push down with continuous, maximum force until the vehicle comes to a complete stop on the shoulder.
- Never turn a mechanical ignition key to
OFFanLOCKwhile moving: Turning a physical key fully off while rolling engages the mechanical steering column lock pin, locking your steering wheel frozen so you cannot steer around curves, while simultaneously disabling power steering and airbag sensors. - Emergency push-button engine shutdown (only if Neutral fails): If an electronic shifter fails to enter Neutral, press and **hold the
START/STOPbişkoka agirpêketinê bi domdarî 3 saniyeyên tijî ** (an jî 3 caran bi lez lê bixin). Standardên ewlehiya wesayîta motorê ya federal ferz dikin ku girtina 3-saniye motorê diqede dema ku stûna rêveberê vekirî dihêle (her çend rêwerî û frendan tavilê hewceyê hêza masûlkeya desta ya giran e).
Vejandina ji rêveçûna hêzê ya ji nişka ve an têkçûna rêberiya mekanîkî¶
Ajokar bi gelemperî ** windabûna arîkariya rêberiya hêzê ** bi ** girêdana rêveberê ya tam şikestî** tevlihev dikin. Fêrbûna ka kîjan têkçûn qewimî diyar dike ku hûn bi ewlehî otomobîlê çawa disekinînin.
Berawirdkirina têkçûnên rêwerz û suspensionê di lezê de¶
| Mode Failure | Sedema Mekanîkî ya Hevbeş | Çêkera Rêvan çawa dihese | How the Vehicle Behaves | Immediate Emergency Recovery Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic Power Steering Assist Loss | Broken serpentine drive belt, ruptured high-pressure fluid hose, or failed pump. | Steering wheel suddenly requires 5 to 10 times more muscle force to turn, especially below 30 km/h (20 mph); red battery/temp warning lights may illuminate. | Car continues driving straight normally; mechanical steering shaft is 100% intact. | Grip wheel with both hands, pull down hard with one arm while pushing up with the other, ease off gas, and steer in a wide, gradual arc onto the shoulder while tires are still rolling. Shut engine off immediately once parked (water pump belt is likely gone). |
| Electric Power Steering (EPS) Fault | Sîgorteya EPS-ê ya bilind-amp, daketina voltaja alternatorê, xeletiya senora torkê, an motora EPS-ê ya zêde germkirî teqiya. | Dengê zinara rê (Steering Assist Reduced) û teker tavilê pir giran dibe. |
Rêyên otomobîlan rasterast; gearên mekanîkî yên pinîonê bi refikê ve girêdayî dimîne. | Pull firmly with both hands, keep the car rolling at 15 to 25 km/h (10 to 15 mph) while turning onto the shoulder so tires do not bind statically. |
| Catastrophic Tie-Rod End or Ball-Joint Fracture | Xilasbûna giran, îhmalkirina topa xitimî ya ku ji sokê derdikeve, an jî bi lez û bez li qulikek kûr dikeve. | Rêber bi lîstineke nenormal re bi sivikî dizivire, an jî bi tundî li aliyekî dizivire û bi qijirîna metalî ya bilind û dûmana lastîkan re tê. | One front wheel flops outward at an extreme angle (toe-out), acting as a heavy drag brake that pulls the car off course. |
Hold the remaining steerable wheel as straight as possible, avoid slamming the front foot brake (which locks the collapsed wheel), and use progressive teknîkên firnê acîl (handbrake / electronic parking brake + downshifting) to stop rapidly before leaving the roadway. |
| Electronic Steer-by-Wire Fault | Dual-redundant actuator or power bus fault in modern steer-by-wire vehicles. | Flashing red steering wheel warning icon and audible alarm. | Backup redundant motor channel or differential braking engages automatically in limited-speed limp mode. | Activate hazard lights immediately, reduce speed smoothly, and exit the highway at the very first safe turnout. |
Never drive further if your serpentine belt snapped
When hydraulic power steering fails suddenly alongside a red Battery / Alternator warning light on your dashboard, the rubber serpentine belt on the front of your engine has snapped or thrown off a pulley. On most engines, that single belt also drives the coolant water pump. Continuing to drive even 3 to 5 kilometers (2 to 3 miles) without a water pump will boil the engine coolant, overheat the cylinder head past 130 degrees Celsius (265 degrees Fahrenheit), and blow the head gasket. Pull over at the nearest safe spot and shut the engine off.
Limping off the highway and surviving roadside traffic¶
More than 12 percent of all fatal interstate highway crashes involve secondary collisions where an oncoming distracted, drowsy, or impaired driver drifts onto the shoulder and strikes a stopped vehicle or a pedestrian standing beside a flat tire. Once you have brought your vehicle down from highway speed after a blowout, your immediate priority shifts from vehicle control to roadside survival.
The "Sacrifice the Wheel Rim" rule¶
Never stop in a live highway travel lane, on a narrow bridge deck with no shoulder, inside a blind highway curve, or in the center median gore point just to avoid bending a metal wheel rim. - If the shoulder is less than 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide or puts your door within arm's reach of 110 km/h (70 mph) semi-trucks, keep your hazard lights flashing and drive slowly at 15 to 25 km/h (10 to 15 mph) straight down the breakdown lane on the shredded tire or bare metal rim for several hundred meters until you reach an exit ramp, wide paved turnout, or flat grass clearing. - Exception (Wheel-Well Fire Risk): Watch your side mirror as you limp along. If the shredded rubber flailing against the inner fender liner or sparks from the magnesium/aluminum rim ignite smoke or flames inside the wheel well, stop immediately, set the parking brake, and evacuate all passengers 30 meters (100 feet) upwind away from the vehicle.
Step-by-step roadside positioning and evacuation¶
- Park as far to the right (or outside edge) of the shoulder as possible: Leave maximum buffer distance between your vehicle and the white fog line.
- Angle your front wheels away from live traffic: Turn the steering wheel slightly toward the guardrail or ditch so that if a distracted driver clips the rear of your car, your vehicle is deflected away from the highway lanes rather than pushed back into traffic.
- Exit exclusively through the passenger-side (non-traffic-side) doors: Never open the driver's door into an active highway lane. Climb across the center console if necessary and have all passengers exit onto the grass shoulder side.
- Move everyone behind the steel guardrail or 15 to 30 meters (50 to 100 feet) up the embankment: Do not sit inside a disabled car on a narrow highway shoulder, and never stand directly behind or in front of the parked vehicle. Walk behind the guardrail and move slightly upstream (behind the car, facing oncoming traffic) so that if your parked car is struck, the wreckage cannot be hurled forward into your family.
- Place reflective warning triangles at staggered intervals (if safe from behind the barrier):
- Place the first reflective triangle 3 meters (10 feet) behind the traffic-side corner of the vehicle.
- Place the second triangle 30 meters (100 feet) behind the vehicle in the middle of the shoulder.
- Place the third triangle 60 to 90 meters (200 to 300 feet) behind the vehicle (especially before a hill crest or curve). Never use incendiary strike flares if fuel is leaking or dry brush lines the highway.
- Never change a traffic-side tire yourself on a highway: If the blown tire is on the side facing live highway lanes, review changing a flat tire and tire pressure û what to do during a car breakdown: do not kneel on the white fog line with your back to 110 km/h traffic. Call roadside assistance or your local hejmarên acîl (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom, or state highway patrol assistance numbers such as
*55an#77) so a highway safety patrol truck with high-visibility arrow boards and impact attenuators can block the lane.
Preventing highway blowouts: pressure, heat, and tire age¶
According to NHTSA tire failure investigations, over 75 percent of high-speed tire blowouts are preceded by slow under-inflation, not sudden punctures.
- The physics of under-inflation heat failure: Air pressure inside the tire carries 95% of the vehicle's weight, not the rubber sidewall itself. When a tire is under-inflated by just 40 to 55 kilopascals (6 to 8 PSI), the sidewall bulges and flexes sharply every time the wheel contacts the pavement (roughly 800 times per minute at highway speed). This mechanical hysteresis flexing generates intense internal heat exceeding 120 degrees Celsius (250 degrees Fahrenheit), melting the vulcanized bond between the steel belts and rubber tread until the tread peels off explosively.
- Check cold tire pressure monthly against the driver's door-jamb placard: Never inflate to the "Max Press" molded onto the rubber tire sidewall; inflate to the exact cold kPa / PSI specification printed on the yellow-and-white Tire and Loading Information sticker inside your driver's door frame.
- Replace tires older than 6 to 10 years regardless of remaining tread depth: Rubber oxidizes and dries out over time (thermo-oxidative degradation), even on low-mileage vehicles, RV trailers, and spare tires stored underneath pickup trucks. Read the 4-digit DOT Tire Identification Number (TIN) stamped on the outer sidewall after the letters
DOT: the last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture (for example,3421means the tire was built in the 34th week of 2021). Vehicle manufacturers and safety agencies recommend replacing any tire that reaches 6 years of active service and never driving on any tire older than 10 years from its DOT build date.
Practice shifting into Neutral and test your spare tire pressure today
Next time you are parked in a driveway, practice shifting your vehicle's gear selector from Drive (D) into Neutral (N) without looking down so your hand builds automatic muscle memory. While checking your four road tires with a digital gauge each month, also check the spare tire in your trunk (compact "donut" spares typically require 415 kPa / 60 PSI and frequently lose pressure over a year, leaving motorists stranded with a flat spare when a blowout occurs).
Pirsên pir caran têne pirsîn¶
Why should I stay off the brake pedal and press the gas lightly when a tire blows out on the highway?
When a tire bursts at highway speed, the collapsed rubber creates massive drag on that single corner of the car, pulling the vehicle sideways. If you slam on the brakes, the vehicle's weight pitches violently forward onto the shredded front tire (causing the metal rim to dig into the asphalt and flip the car) or unloads the rear axle (causing a 180-degree spinout). Holding steady throttle or pressing the accelerator lightly for 1 to 2 seconds keeps weight planted on the rear axle and uses forward momentum to pull the swerving vehicle straight until you can coast down safely.
At what speed is it safe to apply the brakes and pull onto the shoulder after a blowout?
Let the vehicle coast down naturally in your current travel lane using wind drag and rolling resistance until your speed drops below 50 km/h (30 mph) before applying gentle, progressive pressure to the brake pedal. Wait until the vehicle has slowed below 30 km/h (20 mph) before steering off the paved roadway onto a gravel or grass shoulder so the exposed wheel rim does not catch in soft soil and roll the car.
Is it better to stop immediately in a narrow breakdown lane or keep driving slowly on a flat tire?
Always prioritize human life over a 200-dollar metal wheel rim. If a blowout happens on a bridge, in a blind curve, or along a narrow shoulder where high-speed trucks pass within inches of your doors, turn on your hazard lights and drive slowly at 15 to 25 km/h (10 to 15 mph) on the shredded tire or bare rim for a few hundred meters until you reach a wide exit ramp or flat pullout area. Only stop immediately if you see smoke or flames coming from the wheel well.
Can I still steer my car if the power steering belt or electric motor fails completely while driving?
Yes. On virtually all passenger cars and trucks, a solid steel steering shaft and rack-and-pinion gear still mechanically connect your steering wheel to the front wheels when hydraulic or electric power steering assist fails. The wheel will suddenly feel 5 to 10 times heavier to turn, so grip the wheel firmly with both hands, use your upper body strength to pull it, and steer onto the shoulder in a wide, gradual arc while the tires are still rolling at 15 to 30 km/h (10 to 20 mph).
Why must I never pump the brake pedal when my gas pedal is stuck wide open?
Power brake boosters in gasoline vehicles use engine intake vacuum to multiply the force of your foot on the brake pedal. When an accelerator is stuck wide open, the engine throttle plate is open and produces almost zero vacuum. Pumping the brake pedal on and off vents your booster's remaining reserve vacuum after just two presses, leaving the brake pedal rock-hard. Instead, shift immediately into Neutral (`N`) and press the brake pedal down with one continuous, unrelenting push until the car stops.
How can I tell if my tires are too old and at risk of a sudden tread separation blowout?
Look on the outer sidewall of each tire for the letters DOT followed by a series of letters and numbers ending in a 4-digit oval stamp. Those final four digits tell you the week and year the tire was manufactured (for example, 1819 means the 18th week of 2019). Even if the tread looks deep, internal rubber compounds dry out and delaminate with age; safety experts recommend replacing tires after 6 years of road use and never driving on any tire more than 10 years past its manufacture date.
