Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.

Warmth speeds changes in the body, so it is kind to keep your pet cool until you decide what to do. In a warm home or in summer, this is especially important.
- Lay your pet on a towel or blanket on a cool floor, or in a cool room.
- Place a towel under them, because the body may release fluids.
- Keep them away from heaters and direct sunlight.
- If you need to keep the body for a day, you may place a small pet in a cardboard box or wrap them in a cloth, and keep them in a cool place such as a garage or cellar. A refrigerator is sometimes used for very small animals if kept separate from food, but a vet or pet cremation service can advise.
- Use ice packs or frozen bottles wrapped in towels beside larger pets if the weather is hot.
Please do not use a sealed plastic bag for more than a short time, because it traps heat and moisture. A breathable blanket or sheet is better.
Practical tips¶
- Wear gloves if you wish, and wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- If your pet has an open wound or fluids, cover with a towel.
- Keep other pets, especially dogs, away if it distresses them. Some pets benefit from seeing the body to understand what has happened, and a vet can advise.
- Remove collars and tags if you want to keep them, or leave them on if you prefer.
Taking keepsakes¶
Many people find comfort in a keepsake. You may wish to cut a small piece of fur, take a paw print in clay or ink, or keep a collar. A vet or cremation service can help with paw prints, nose prints, and fur clippings. You can ask them at the time.
Your options for what happens next¶
You have several choices. There is no right answer, and the best choice is the one that fits your family, budget, beliefs, and local rules.
What it involves | Things to think about |
|---|---|---|
| Vet collects the body | The vet clinic arranges cremation or disposal | Simple and common, they can explain costs and ashes options |
| Private (individual) cremation | Your pet is cremated alone and ashes are returned | You receive your pet's own ashes, and costs are higher |
| Communal cremation | Several pets are cremated together, ashes are not returned | Lower cost, no ashes to keep |
| Home burial | You bury your pet on private land | Check local rules, depth, and safety first |
| Pet cemetery | A dedicated burial ground | Offers a permanent place, with a fee |
| Municipal collection or disposal | Local council or animal control collects the body | Often available at low or no cost, check local arrangements |
Vet or cremation service¶
Calling your vet is often the easiest first step. Many vets will arrange collection from your home, or you can bring your pet to the clinic. They will tell you about cremation options, how long it takes, and how much it costs. You can ask whether you want ashes returned, and what type of urn or container is offered.
Pet crematoria also work directly with families, and some offer home collection. If you want to choose, ask whether the service is a private cremation, where your pet is cremated alone, or a communal cremation. Ask for the price in writing, and ask when you will receive the ashes. Reputable services are open about what they do.
Burying your pet at home¶
Many people want to bury a pet in the garden, and in many places it is allowed on your own land. Rules vary a great deal, and some places ban it or limit it near water, in rental homes, or in towns. Check with your local council, municipality, or environmental office before you dig. If you rent, ask your landlord.
If burial is allowed, a few safety points are widely recommended:
- Choose a spot away from water sources such as wells, streams, and ponds, away from utility lines, and away from areas where children play or food is grown. Call your local utility locating service before digging, if one exists in your area.
- Dig deep enough to protect the grave from animals. Many local authorities and veterinary bodies suggest at least 1 meter (3 feet) of soil above the body. Ask your vet or council for advice that fits where you live.
- Wrap the body in a biodegradable material, such as a cotton sheet, a wicker basket, or a cardboard box. Avoid plastic bags and non-biodegradable materials.
- Mark the grave with a stone, plant, or marker, so that you do not dig there by accident in the future.
- If your pet was put to sleep with a veterinary euthanasia drug, bury deeply and securely. Veterinary bodies warn that the drug can remain in the body and harm wild animals or other pets that dig up or feed on the remains.
- Do not bury a pet that died from a disease that can spread to people or other animals without asking your vet. In some cases, cremation is safer.
If you cannot bury your pet at home, or you move house later, you may be able to arrange a pet cemetery or cremation, or ask whether you can take remains with you. Think about this before choosing home burial.
Pet cemeteries¶
Pet cemeteries offer a quiet, permanent place and sometimes a headstone. They usually charge a fee. Ask for a written price list, and visit if you can. Your vet can often recommend local options.
Municipal and animal control options¶
In many areas, the council, animal control, or sanitation department collects dead animals, often for a low fee or at no cost. This is not a failure of care. It is a practical option for people who cannot afford other choices. Call your local council or animal control office, and ask what they offer and what you need to do.

Helping children¶
If there are children in the home, they will want to know what has happened. The death of a pet is often a child's first experience of death, and how it is handled can shape how they understand loss.
Tell the truth, gently¶
Use clear words such as "died". Avoid saying "put to sleep" or "went away" in a way that could confuse, as young children may become afraid of sleep or wait for the pet to return. For example, you might say, "Buddy died this morning. His body stopped working and he cannot come back. We are very sad, and it is okay to cry."
If your pet was euthanised, explain simply, "The vet gave Buddy a special medicine so he would not feel pain. It is different from the medicine you get when you are sick." The guide on telling children and teens about a death has age by age wording that also works for pets.
Let them say goodbye¶
Children often want to see their pet, to stroke them, or to draw a picture or write a note. Prepare them first by explaining that the pet will look still and will not move. Let them choose. They may wish to be involved in choosing a burial spot, a keepsake, or a small ceremony.
Common reactions¶
It may be tempting to get a new pet immediately to cheer a child up. Most experts suggest waiting until the family has had time to grieve. A new pet is not a replacement, and each animal is an individual. When the time is right, you may feel ready.
Other pets in the home¶
- A strong urge to be near their things, or to put them away.
- Feeling that others do not understand.
All of these are normal. Grief often comes in waves and can be set off by small reminders such as a lead on a hook or the sound of a bowl.
What helps¶
- Talk about your pet with someone who understands, and tell stories.
- Take time off work if you can, and ask for understanding.
- Create a ritual, such as lighting a candle, planting a tree, or holding a small service.
- Make a memory, such as a photo album, a framed picture, or a paw print.
- Keep to simple routines of eating, sleeping, and walking, even if you do not have your pet with you.
- Ask for help if you feel overwhelmed.
You can also visit the guide on looking after yourself in acute grief, which covers sleep, food, physical symptoms, and when to ask for help.
Note
You do not have to justify your grief to anyone. If people around you do not understand, find someone who does, such as a friend who has lost a pet, a pet loss support group, or a pet bereavement helpline.
Where to find support¶
Several organisations offer pet bereavement support, often through phone lines, online groups, or counselling. Examples include the Blue Cross Pet Bereavement Support Service in the United Kingdom and the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement in the United States. Many veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and universities with veterinary schools also offer support or can point you to local services. Ask your vet, who may know of services in your area.
If your grief is overwhelming, if you cannot function for weeks, or if you have thoughts of harming yourself, please get help. Speak to your doctor, a counsellor, or a crisis line. In the United States and Canada, you can call or text 988. In the United Kingdom, Samaritans is on 116 123.
In Australia, Lifeline is on 13 11 14. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. The అత్యవసర సంఖ్యలు page lists crisis lines for other countries.
Euthanasia and pets that died after a decision¶
Some pets die at home after a planned euthanasia, with a vet visiting the home. If this was your situation, you may feel grief, relief, doubt, or all three. Many people ask, "Did I do it too soon," or "Did I wait too long." The decision is one of love and care, and there is rarely a perfect moment.
If you are struggling with the memory of the procedure, speak to your vet, who can answer questions. Many people find that after a time, the memory of the last day becomes softer, and they remember the good years.
If your pet was put to sleep at a clinic, the vet will usually ask whether you want to take the body home, arrange cremation, or leave arrangements with them. You can take time, and you can change your mind.
Costs and practical matters¶
Pet cremation and burial can cost money, and the figures differ by country and by the size of your pet. If cost is a worry, tell your vet honestly. Many vets offer simple, low cost choices, and local councils or animal welfare groups sometimes help.
- Ask for prices in writing before you agree.
- Ask whether the quote includes collection, cremation, and return of ashes.
- Check whether a private cremation is truly private and ashes are your pet's alone.
- Keep receipts and records.
If your pet had insurance, tell the insurer, who may have a claim process. If your pet was microchipped, update or inform the microchip database so records are correct. You may also need to cancel a local licence or registration, for example for a dog.
Pet belongings¶
You do not need to clear your pet's belongings quickly. Some people keep a bed, lead, or bowl for months, and others prefer to put things away. When you are ready, you can donate unused food and bedding to a shelter or rescue.
Be aware that, if your pet died from an infectious illness, you may need to wash or dispose of items. Your vet can advise.
What not to do¶
- Do not leave your pet outside where wildlife or other animals can reach them.
- Do not dispose of the body in rubbish bins, rivers, or public land. It is often illegal and can harm others.
- Do not bury your pet in a place where a water source or utility line is nearby.
- Do not keep a body in a warm place or in a sealed plastic bag for long.
- Do not blame yourself, or let others blame you.
- Do not rush to decide, but do keep the body cool.
Differences by country¶
Rules differ, so check locally. These notes are general.
In the United States¶
Many states and counties allow home burial on your own land, but some limit it, and rules for rental homes differ. Vets, animal control, and pet cemeteries can advise. Check your local county or city rules. The American Veterinary Medical Association has guidance on euthanasia and aftercare.
In the United Kingdom¶
Home burial of pets is generally allowed on your own land, with guidance from the government on distance from water and depth. Pets cannot be buried on land you do not own without permission. Vets and licensed pet crematoria offer other options. The government's guidance on the disposal of pet carcasses explains the rules.
In Canada¶
Rules differ by province, territory, and municipality. Many allow home burial on private property, with limits near water. Contact your municipality, local vet, or animal control for local rules.
In Australia¶
Rules vary by state and territory and by council. Many councils allow home burial of small pets with depth guidance, and others require cremation or collection. Contact your local council or vet.
In other countries¶
Customs and laws vary widely. Ask your vet or local authority about home burial, cremation, and collection services.
A note on first aid training¶
If you would like to feel more prepared in a pet or human emergency, a hands-on first aid course from the Red Cross, St John Ambulance, or a local provider can teach you skills such as CPR. Some also offer pet first aid. It is not something to do today, and nobody should feel pressure. It is simply an option for later.
What should I do first when my pet dies at home?¶
Check gently that your pet has died, and call your vet or an emergency vet if you are unsure, because they can advise and help. Place your pet on a towel in a cool, quiet place away from other animals and young children, and wash your hands afterwards. Then call your vet to talk about your options, and take time to sit with your pet and say goodbye.
Can I bury my pet in my garden?¶
In many places you can bury a pet on your own land, but rules differ by country, region, and whether you own or rent. Check with your local council, municipality, or animal control first. If it is allowed, choose a spot away from water and utility lines, dig at least 1 meter (3 feet) deep, and use biodegradable wrapping.
What if I cannot afford cremation or burial?¶
Tell your vet honestly, because many offer simple, low cost choices. Your local council, animal control office, or an animal welfare charity may collect the body for a small fee or at no cost. Home burial, where allowed, is another low cost option.
How can I help my child understand that our pet has died?¶
Use clear, gentle words such as "died", avoid phrases like "went to sleep", and say that it was not their fault. Let them say goodbye if they wish, answer questions honestly, and keep routines steady. Wait before getting a new pet, and give the family time to grieve.
