12V-2x6 graphics card cable melts from high contact resistance, or a shorted MOSFET ignites acrid fibreglass smoke inside the case, your immediate actions determine whether you save your hardware and prevent a room fire.
Үүнийг одоо хий¶
- Pull the AC power cord straight out of the wall outlet or flip the room circuit breaker. Do not hold down the top Windows case power button (which takes 4 seconds and leaves the 5V standby rail live), and do not touch the metal PC chassis if you suspect a live AC short. Unplug from the wall socket or surge protector switch first.
- Never spray water, foam, or a standard yellow-powder ABC fire extinguisher into a smoking PC unless flames threaten the room. Once AC wall power is cut, 95 percent of PC electrical shorts self-extinguish within 10 seconds. If open flames continue burning plastic inside the case, use a clean-agent Carbon Dioxide (\(CO_2\)) or Halotron Class C extinguisher. Only use a dry-chemical ABC extinguisher if fire threatens to spread to curtains or furniture, and call your local яаралтай тусламжийн дугаар (АНУ, Канадад 911, Европын холбоо даяар 112, Их Британид 999).
- Evacuate and ventilate the room immediately if you smell sweet, fishy, or acrid chemical fumes. Blown electrolytic capacitors vent heated electrolyte vapor, and burning FR-4 motherboard fiberglass and PVC cable jackets release toxic hydrogen chloride, brominated flame retardants, and carbon monoxide. Open exterior windows and do not breathe the plume.
- Never press the power button a second time to "see if it boots" after a pop, spark, or sudden shutoff. If a power supply protection circuit (
OCP,OVP, эсвэлSCP) just saved your graphics card or motherboard from a dead short, pressing the power button again forces a second 50-amp surge across the shorted silicon and blasts a permanent carbon crater through the circuit board. - Leave a melted GPU power plug untouched and attached in place until you take macro photos. If a
12VHPWR,12V-2x6, or 8-pin PCIe connector has welded itself to your graphics card header, trying to pry it out with pliers snaps the PCB solder joints and voids warranty coverage. Photograph both ends of the cable and the seating gap first. - Never open the metal housing of a Power Supply Unit (PSU). Even hours or days after being unplugged from the wall, the large primary high-voltage bulk capacitors inside a desktop PSU store 320 to 400 volts of lethal direct current (DC) capable of causing fatal ventricular fibrillation if touched with a screwdriver or finger.
Danger
Lethal High-Voltage Capacitor Hazard Inside Power Supplies: A computer Power Supply Unit (PSU) is not a user-serviceable component. If the bleeder resistor inside a failed PSU is broken, its primary 400V bulk capacitors remain fully charged long after the AC cord is unplugged. Never unscrew the top cover of a PSU to inspect a popped capacitor, replace a noisy fan, or retrieve a dropped screw. Always recycle or RMA the sealed PSU intact.

- Attempt gentle removal ONLY if the plastic is not fused:
- Press the retention latch firmly and pull straight back in line with the socket (never wiggle up-and-down or side-to-side).
- If the connector refuses to budge: STOP IMMEDIATELY. Melted nylon inside the shroud has cooled and welded the male and female housings together into a solid block. Yanking it with pliers will rip the surface-mount header pads right off the graphics card PCB, turning a covered warranty repair into physical PCB destruction. Leave the cable attached (unplug the other end from the modular PSU) and ship the GPU with the fused cable still attached per the manufacturer's RMA instructions.
- If the connector slides out: Shine a bright flashlight inside both the female cable plug and the male GPU header pins. Look for sunken or pushed-back metal sockets, blackened/bluish heat-tinted pins, or melted plastic crust inside the square pin cavities. Never reuse a cable or plug a fresh cable into a GPU header that has even a single darkened or crusted pin, because the insulating plastic melted onto the metal pin creates massive contact resistance that will instantly melt the new cable too.

Measure 35 millimeters (1.4 inches) of straight, unbent wire extending straight out of the plug before starting a gentle curve.
- Verify zero visible gap and an audible/tactile latch click: Plug the cable into the GPU outside the case (before installing the GPU into the motherboard PCIe slot) if your case is tight, press firmly on the back of the plastic connector housing (not the wires) until zero hairline gap remains between the plug collar and the GPU receptacle, and verify that your tempered-glass side panel does not press against the cable curve when closed.
Part 3: Power Supply Unit (PSU) capacitor blowouts and modular cable traps¶
When a Power Supply Unit fails with a loud bang, spark, or trip of your room's wall circuit breaker, your priority is isolating the dead PSU and verifying whether any downstream components were affected.
Why a blown PSU usually spares your motherboard and GPU¶
Modern ATX power supplies are divided into two electrically isolated halves separated by a high-frequency transformer and optocouplers:
- The Primary (Hot / High-Voltage) Side: Takes 120V or 230V AC from your wall socket, rectifies it into -380V DC via the Active Power Factor Correction (APFC) boost circuit, and stores it in one or two large cylindrical 400V bulk electrolytic capacitors. When age, heat, or a voltage spike causes the APFC MOSFET or bulk capacitor to short out, it explodes with a dramatic flash and bang, immediately blowing the PSU's internal 10A/15A input fuse (and often tripping your home's 15A/20A room breaker). Because this explosion happens on the primary side of the isolation transformer, zero high voltage crosses over to your PC components.
- The Secondary (Cold / Low-Voltage) Side: Generates the regulated +12V, +5V, and +3.3V DC rails monitored by a supervisor integrated circuit (
OCPOver-Current,OVPOver-Voltage,UVPUnder-Voltage,SCPShort-Circuit, andOTPOver-Temperature Protection). If any secondary rail rises more than 10 to 15 percent above nominal voltage, theOVPcrowbar circuit shuts the PSU off in under 20 milliseconds.
The #1 deadly mistake during PSU replacement: reusing old modular cables¶
Danger
NEVER reuse the internal modular power cables from your old PSU when installing a new PSU, even if the plugs physically fit and even if both PSUs are from the exact same brand. While the ends of the cables that plug into your motherboard (24-pin), CPU (8-pin EPS), GPU (8-pin PCIe), and hard drives (SATA) are strictly standardized by the ATX specification, the pinouts on the back of the Power Supply Unit itself are completely unstandardized.
- What happens if you mix modular cables: Manufacturer A (or even Model Series X from the same brand) may wire Pin 3 on the PSU's modular SATA socket as +12V, while Manufacturer B wires Pin 3 as +5V or Ground. If you leave your old cables neatly zip-tied inside your case and simply swap the PSU box at the bottom, plugging the power button in will send raw +12 Volts straight into the +5 Volt logic chips of every SATA SSD, hard drive, AIO liquid cooler pump, and RGB controller in your PC, causing instantaneous smoke and destroying every drive in a single millisecond.
- Mandatory PSU swap rule: When removing a failed or upgraded modular PSU, strip 100 percent of its internal modular cables out of the PC case right along with the PSU box, and install only the new cables that came inside the box of your replacement PSU.
How to safely test whether your PC survived a PSU blowout¶
Once you have removed the failed PSU and all of its old modular cables, inspect and test the rest of your system in stages using a known-good replacement ATX 3.1 PSU:
- Visual and olfactory inspection of motherboard and GPU:
- With the side panels off and a bright flashlight in hand, inspect the motherboard VRM area (around the CPU socket, underneath or alongside the heatsinks), the PCIe slot area, the M.2 slots, and the backplate gap of the graphics card.
- Confirm there are no charred black spots on the PCB, no cracked or browned miniature rectangular ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), and no melted trace lines. Note that your motherboard and GPU heatsinks may still smell faintly of the dead PSU's vented capacitor smoke for a few days; sniff directly 2 centimeters (1 inch) from the motherboard VRMs to distinguish lingered air smoke from a locally burned board chip.
- Minimum-hardware "Breadboard" or decoupled stage test:
- Before connecting expensive SATA hard drives or your flagship graphics card to the new PSU, connect only the 24-pin ATX motherboard cable and the 8-pin EPS CPU power cable (if your CPU has integrated graphics, remove the discrete GPU completely for the first test boot).
- Plug into a surge-protected wall outlet, flip the PSU switch on, and observe the motherboard standby LEDs. If the standby lights illuminate normally with no clicking or hot smell, press the power button and verify that the system posts to BIOS.
- Power down, unplug, install the graphics card with its brand-new PSU cable seated 100 percent flush, and test boot to Windows.
Part 4: Fire extinguisher cleanup and PCB corrosion triage¶
If a severe electrical fault forced you to discharge a fire extinguisher into or near your PC, your cleanup strategy depends entirely on the chemical agent inside the extinguisher. For broader household electrical fire procedures, see electrical fires and sparks in the home.

Step-by-step decontamination if yellow ABC extinguisher powder hit your PC¶
Standard household red fire extinguishers contain pale yellow monoammonium phosphate powder. While it saves your house from burning down, leaving that yellow dust sitting on your graphics card and motherboard for even two days will permanently corrode every solder joint:
- Keep the room dry and never wipe ABC powder with a damp water cloth: Adding water to monoammonium phosphate powder immediately turns it into corrosive phosphoric acid paste.
- Dry-vacuum and blow out outdoors: Wearing an N95 dust mask and nitrile gloves, carry the PC outdoors. Remove the GPU, RAM, and M.2 SSDs. Use a soft natural-bristle paintbrush or anti-static ESD brush to loosen the yellow powder while sucking it up into a shop vacuum hose held 2 centimeters (1 inch) away.
- Submerge or flush bare PCBs with 99% Pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA): Remove heatsinks and fans from the graphics card and motherboard, place the bare circuit boards in a shallow plastic tray, and pour 99 percent anhydrous isopropyl alcohol generously over both sides while brushing between surface-mount pins with a soft toothbrush. Rinse with a final clean splash of 99 percent IPA and prop the boards vertically in front of a household room fan for 48 to 72 hours before reassembling. Retire and discard the Power Supply Unit (PSU) completely, as you cannot safely open or clean ABC powder out of high-voltage PSU internals.
How to perform a safe standalone PSU "Paperclip / Jumper Block" test (For non-smoking PSUs only)¶
If your PC refuses to power on with a quiet "click" and zero smoke, odor, or visible scorch marks, you can check whether the power supply's 5V standby rail and main power-on relay are still functional only after disconnecting the PSU from every component inside your PC:
- Never test a PSU that has popped, smoked, smelled burnt, or gotten wet: If a PSU emitted smoke or a loud bang, skip this test and retire the unit immediately.
- Disconnect 100 percent of component cables: Unplug the 24-pin motherboard cable, the 8-pin CPU cables, the GPU cables, and all SATA cables from your computer parts so zero hardware is attached to the PSU other than its 24-pin main cable sitting outside the case on a wooden table.
- Bridge Pin 16 (
PS_ON#/ Green wire) to Pin 17 (COM/ Ground / Black wire):- Flip the rear PSU rocker switch to OFF (
O) and unplug the AC wall cord. - Use the plastic 24-pin PSU jumper test block included in the box of many modular PSUs (or bend a standard metal paperclip into a U-shape).
- Holding the 24-pin motherboard connector with the plastic retention clip facing UP toward the ceiling and the open square pin holes facing you, count along the top row (Row 2, clip side) from left to right: Pin 16 is the 4th pin from the left on the clip-side row, and Pin 17 is the 5th pin from the left right next to it.
- Insert the jumper block or paperclip into Pin 16 and Pin 17, set the connector down on a non-conductive surface without touching the metal clip, plug the AC cord in, and flip the rear PSU switch on (keep in mind that many modern "Zero-RPM" eco-mode PSUs will not spin their fan under zero load unless you turn "Eco / Zero-RPM Mode" off on the rear button).
- Flip the rear PSU rocker switch to OFF (
PC electrical safety and hardware recovery checklist¶
- Unplug AC wall power and all DisplayPort/HDMI monitor cables before touching internal components.
- Ventilate the room for 15 minutes if capacitor electrolyte or burnt fiberglass fumes are present.
- Photograph any melted
12VHPWR/12V-2x6GPU connector in place from all four sides before attempting removal. - Never pull a fused GPU power connector with pliers; leave it attached and ship the card and cable together for warranty RMA.
- Remove 100% of old modular PSU cables from the case when swapping power supplies so unstandardized PSU-side pinouts never fry your drives.
- Maintain a 35-millimeter (1.4-inch) straight, unbent zone behind any 16-pin GPU power plug and verify zero visible seating gap.

A loud gunshot or firecracker bang from the bottom/back of your PC accompanied by a tripped room breaker and a sweet or fishy chemical odor is the classic signature of a blown primary 400V bulk electrolytic capacitor or Active PFC MOSFET inside your Power Supply Unit (PSU). Because this failure occurs on the high-voltage AC input side of the PSU's internal isolation transformer, the PSU's internal fuse and your wall breaker cut the circuit before any surge crosses over to the low-voltage 12V/5V/3.3V DC side. In over 85 percent of cases, your motherboard, CPU, graphics card, and SSDs are completely unharmed as long as you unplug the failed PSU immediately and never try to turn it back on.
How can I tell the difference between the older 12VHPWR socket and the safer updated 12V-2x6 socket on a graphics card or PSU?¶
Look closely with a flashlight and magnifying glass at the tiny molded plastic lettering stamped onto the top or side of the 16-pin connector shroud. Original PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR connectors are stamped with the symbol "H+" (which has longer sense pins that allow high power draw even if the plug is slightly ajar). Updated CEM 5.1 12V-2x6 connectors are stamped with the symbol "H++" (which lengthens the 12 main power contact pins by 0.25 millimeters and recesses the 4 tiny sense pins by 1.5 millimeters, ensuring the GPU will refuse to power on or will limit wattage unless the connector is pushed 100 percent flush into the socket). Note that existing 12VHPWR cables are backward- and forward-compatible with 12V-2x6 headers as long as you seat them completely flush with zero gap.
Why did a single SATA power splitter cable catch fire inside my case when hard drives barely use any electricity?¶
Cheap third-party "Molex-to-SATA" or "1-to-4 SATA power splitter" cables sold online often use **injection-molded** SATA plugs rather than **crimped/assembled** plugs. Inside a cheap injection-molded SATA plug, the four internal 18AWG wires (+12V, Ground, +5V, Ground) are held only by soft PVC plastic poured over them at the factory; over time, heat and cable tension cause two adjacent wires inside the molded plastic block to touch slightly, creating a resistive bridge arc that heats to 300 degrees Celsius (572 degrees Fahrenheit) without drawing enough total amps to trip your PSU's 20-amp Over-Current Protection (OCP). Always discard molded Molex-to-SATA adapters and use only native crimped SATA cables supplied with your PSU.
Can I use a hair dryer or compressed air cans to clean out a PC after an electrical pop or smoke event?¶
Never use a household hair dryer on computer electronics, as hair dryers blow hot air mixed with thousands of volts of static electricity (ESD) that can zap delicate CMOS gates. You can use dry compressed air outdoors to blow loose dust or dry fire-extinguisher powder off unpowered components after unplugging the PC and removing the PSU, provided you hold the can upright so freezing liquid propellant does not spray onto the board, and hold fan blades still with a finger so spinning the fan motor backward does not generate back-EMF voltage into the motherboard fan header.
