Lost Passport or Travel Documents Abroad¶
Losing your passport or identification in a foreign country can prevent you from boarding flights or checking into hotels. Acting systematically will get you an emergency replacement travel document quickly.
Do this now¶
- File a local police report. Visit the nearest police station to report the loss or theft. Request a copy of the official police report, as your embassy requires it for a replacement passport.
- Locate your nearest embassy or consulate. Find the contact details and address of your home country embassy or consulate in the city or country you are visiting.
- Gather emergency identification copies. Retrieve digital copies of your passport photo page, driver's license, birth certificate, or travel itinerary stored in your email or cloud storage.
- Obtain new passport photos. Find a local photo shop or booth that produces standard passport sized color photos matching official requirements.
- Schedule an urgent embassy appointment. Contact the embassy consular section to request an emergency passport or emergency travel document appointment.
... warning "Do not attempt to travel without valid documents" Trying to cross international borders or board international flights with reported lost passports or without proper documentation can lead to detention by border authorities.
Getting an emergency replacement¶
Embassies can issue temporary emergency passports, often within 24 to 48 hours, that allow you to complete your trip or return home directly.
- Proof of citizenship: Present a copy of your lost passport, birth certificate, or national identity card.
- Proof of identity: Present a driver's license, government ID, or expired identity document.
- Travel itinerary: Show your confirmed airline ticket or train booking demonstrating your departure date.
- Payment: Consulates charge standard replacement fees. Keep cash or a accepted credit card ready.
Protecting your money and credit cards¶
If your wallet or bag was stolen along with your passport:
- Immediately freeze or cancel your credit and debit cards using your bank's mobile app or global emergency phone numbers.
- Contact family or friends to transfer emergency funds via international wire services (such as Western Union or MoneyGram) or via embassy financial assistance programs if available.
