Waking up in a frosty alpine tent at \(-2\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(28\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)) and discovering that you left your wet hollow-fiber membrane water filter (Sawyer Squeeze, Katadyn BeFree, Platypus QuickDraw, LifeStrawnebo MSR Guardian) inside your backpack vestibule overnight rather than tucked inside your sleeping bag is a silent backcountry medical emergency. Because a hollow-fiber water filter consists of thousands of microscopic straw-like polymer tubes with pore walls perforated at 0.1 to 0.2 microns, residual water trapped inside those micro-tubes expands by 9 percent in volume the instant it freezes into ice crystals, splitting the microscopic pore walls open from the inside while the outer plastic housing looks 100 percent intact and undamaged to the naked eye. If you continue squeezing stream water through a hollow-fiber filter that has frozen even once, raw unfiltered Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia duodenalis, Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, and Salmonella bypass the ruptured membranes directly into your clean bottle. Worse yet, if your ceramic pump cracks, your UV purifier (SteriPEN) battery dies in the cold, or your filter clogs solid with glacial rock flour (silt) miles from the trailhead, you must choose rationally between Emergency Field Disinfection (1-Minute Rolling Boil, Chlorine Dioxide, Household Bleach, Povidone-Iodinenebo Solar UV SODIS) and the reality that acute dehydration kills or incapacitates a lost hiker within 24 to 72 hours, whereas protozoan parasites (Giardia and Cryptosporidium) have an incubation period of 7 to 14 days.

If a hiker in your group is already suffering from severe hypovolemic dehydration, bloody dysentery, inability to keep fluids down for over 24 hours, or confusion (delirium), call your local emergency number (911 ve Spojených státech a Kanadě, 112 po celé Evropské unii, 999 in the United Kingdom), trigger a Satellite SOS on your Garmin inReach nebo iPhone Emergency SOS via Satellite, or consult our directory of international tísňová čísla immediately. For all cases of a frozen, cracked, or clogged backcountry water filter, follow the integrity testing, unclogging, and emergency water disinfection protocols below.

Udělejte to teď

  1. Assume any wet hollow-fiber water filter (Sawyer, BeFree, QuickDraw, LifeStraw) that froze overnight is internally ruptured: You cannot see microscopic 5-micron ice tears inside a hollow-fiber cartridge by looking at the outside plastic shell. If ice crystals formed inside your filter, or if it sat outside your sleeping bag during a sub-freezing night, stop trusting it as your sole barrier against protozoa and bacteria and run the Manufacturer Bubble / Air-Block Integrity Test (Section 1 below) once thawed.
  2. NEVER try to squeeze water through a partially frozen filter to "thaw it out": Forcing hydraulic pressure against ice-filled polymer micro-tubes rips the remaining intact fibers apart immediately. Tuck a cold filter inside your jacket against your warm torso for 30 minutes to thaw passively before testing or backflushing.
  3. Switch to the Golden Standard #1 Emergency Method: A 1-Minute Rolling Boil (3 Minutes Above 2,000 Meters / 6,560 Feet): Per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS), bringing water to a vigorous rolling boil for 1 full minute (or 3 minutes at elevations above 2,000 meters / 6,560 feet where reduced atmospheric pressure lowers the boiling point of water to \(93\text{ degrees Celsius} / 199\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\) or below) kills 100% of all human waterborne pathogens (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, bacteria, viruses, and amoebae) without exception.
  4. If you have no stove or fuel, use Backup Chemical Disinfection (Chlorine Dioxide, Unscented Household Bleachnebo 10% Povidone-Iodine) and DOUBLE the contact time for cold water: Chemical reactions slow down by 50% for every \(10\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(18\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)) drop in water temperature. In icy mountain snowmelt (\(4\text{ degrees Celsius} / 39\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)), you must double the standard 30-minute contact time to 60 minutes (or 4 hours with Chlorine Dioxide to kill thick-shelled Cryptosporidium oocysts), and remember to "bleed the threads" of your bottle cap.
  5. Pre-filter cloudy, muddy, or glacial-silt water through a bandana + settled decanting BEFORE boiling or adding chemicals: Turbidity (suspended clay, silt, and organic debris) shields bacteria and cysts from chemical oxidizers and UV light, and binds up free chlorine before it can kill pathogens. Let silty water settle undisturbed in a pot for 30 to 60 minutes, pour the clearer top layer through a folded cotton bandana or coffee filter, and increase chemical dosing by 2x if the water remains cloudy.
  6. If you have ZERO fire, ZERO stove, and ZERO chemicals, NEVER let yourself die of dehydration in the wilderness out of fear of Giardia: Dehydration causes orthostatic fainting, kidney injury, cognitive confusion, and death within 2 to 4 days, whereas Giardia takes 7 to 14 days to cause symptoms (by which time you will be safely out of the backcountry and near a clinic with metronidazole/tinidazole). Select the safest high-elevation spring or small feeder brook (upstream of livestock/beaver ponds), dig a 1-meter (3-foot) gravel-bar seepage well ("Gypsy Well"), use 6-hour clear-bottle Solar Disinfection (SODIS) if sunny, and drink to stay alive.

Danger

What Boiling and Chemical Tablets Can NEVER Remove: Boiling and chemical disinfectants (Chlorine Dioxide, Bleach, Iodine) only kill biological living organisms (viruses, bacteria, and protozoan cysts). They do NOT remove heavy metals or chemical toxins (such as arsenic and heavy-metal runoff downstream of abandoned alpine mines, agricultural pesticides, petroleum spills, or neurotoxins/hepatotoxins produced by blue-green Cyanobacteria / Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)). In fact, boiling water that contains a green cyanobacteria algal bloom lyses (bursts) the algae cells and releases more heat-stable microcystin toxin into the water. Never drink from stagnant ponds covered in green paint-like scum or orange acidic mine-tailing creeks (pH < 4).

Phase 1: Testing if a frozen or dropped water filter is internally broken (and unclogging a dead filter)

Not all hollow-fiber and ceramic filters behave the same way after a freeze, and two popular models (Katadyn BeFree a Platypus QuickDraw) actually have a built-in physical physics test (Hydrophilic Pore Capillary Bubble Point) that lets you verify in the field in 30 seconds whether the microscopic fibers are torn.

1. Field Integrity Tests by Filter Brand (Sawyer, Katadyn BeFree, Platypus QuickDraw, MSR)

Wet hydrophilic 0.1-micron pores hold a microscopic film of water by capillary surface tension that blocks low-pressure air from passing through the wet membrane (Air-Lock), whereas water passes through easily. If even a single fiber splits open from ice expansion, air blows right through the tear like a punctured bicycle tire.

Filter Model Can You Field-Test It After a Freeze? Official Manufacturer Integrity Check Procedure Verdict if It Froze Solid
1. Katadyn BeFree (0.1 micron EZ-Clean Membrane) YES (Air-Block Blow Test) 1. Thaw the filter completely and filter a few ounces of water so the membrane pores are 100% wet.
2. Empty the soft flask, fill the flask halfway with air only, screw the wet filter cap on, hold it upside down, and squeeze the air-filled flask hard.
3. PASS: The wet intact 0.1-micron pores block air completely; the flask remains rigid and air cannot be squeezed through.
4. FAIL: If air hisses easily through the mouthpiece when you squeeze air, the hollow fibers are ruptured. Discard immediately.
Test via Air-Block Test; if any air passes through wet fibers, it is unsafe.
2. Platypus QuickDraw (0.2 micron Hollow Fiber) YES (Blow-Back Bubble Check) 1. Wet the filter completely by filtering water, then fill the dirty reservoir half-full of water.
2. Hold the reservoir upright (filter at top) and squeeze water up until it comes out the drink spout.
3. Put your mouth on the clean drink spout and blow air firmly backward into the filter while watching the dirty reservoir.
4. PASS: Only a tiny trickle of leftover air bubbles for 1 to 2 seconds and then hits a solid wall of resistance (you cannot blow air into the bag).
5. FAIL: If a continuous stream of large bubbles keeps bubbling down into the bag as long as you blow, the fibers are cracked.
Test via Blow-Back Bubble Check; replace if continuous bubbles pass.
3. Sawyer Squeeze / Mini / Micro (0.1 micron Hollow Fiber) NO (Cannot Be Field-Tested with Air) Because Sawyer uses a different membrane geometry and potting compound that is not designed for a consumer air-block test, Sawyer's official engineering guidance states there is NO reliable field test to prove a Sawyer filter did not crack internally after freezing. (Only an obvious catastrophic crack, where dirty water gushes out at 3x normal speed or leaks out the housing seams, is visible). REPLACE / BYPASS: If a wet Sawyer filter froze solid overnight, treat it as compromised for pathogens (use it only as a sediment pre-filter before boiling or chemical treatment).
4. MSR MiniWorks / Katadyn Pocket (0.2 micron Ceramic Element) YES (Visual Crack, Caliper Gauge, or Red Food-Dye Test) Unscrew the housing and inspect the ceramic candle closely: freezing water inside a wet ceramic candle almost always produces a visible hairline crack down the ceramic cylinder or pops the bottom end-cap off. You can also pump water mixed with red food coloring/beet juice (which shouldn't pass in high concentration through a tight carbon/ceramic matrix) or check with the metal wear gauge. If a hairline crack is visible in the ceramic element, it is bypassed and unusable.

Používejte teplou čistou vodu (35 to 45 degrees Celsius / 95 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, NIKDY vařící voda) pro zpětné proplachování: Studená voda dobře nerozpouští minerální kámen ani neuvolňuje lepkavý jílový biofilm. Zabraňte budoucímu ucpání pomocí předběžného usazení a filtrace šátkem: Nikdy nenabírejte přímo z mléčně bílé ledovcové řeky (glacial flour částice měří \(0,5\text{ až }5\text{ mikronů}\) a okamžitě se zacelí do pórů o velikosti 0,1 mikronu). Naberte vodu do hrnce nebo skládacího kbelíku, nechte ji 30 až 60 minut nehybně sedět, aby se na dně usadil bahno, a před filtrováním nalijte vrchní vodu přes 4vrstvý bavlněný šátek.

Fáze 2: Kompletní srovnání nouzových metod dezinfekce vody v backcountry

Proč některé metody snadno zabíjejí viry a bakterie a zároveň selhávají proti Cryptosporidium? Protože patogeny přenášené vodou se liší ve fyzické velikosti 1 000krát a v chemické odolnosti 10 000krát:

Kategorie patogenu Velikost (mikrometry \(\mu\text{m}\)) Příklady a příznaky Co to zabije nebo odstraní What FAILS Against It
1. Protozoální cysty a oocysty \(1,0\text{ až }15\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) (velký, tlustostěnný) Cryptosporidium parvum (\(3\text{ až }6\text{ }\mu\text{m}\)), Giardia duodenalis (\(8\text{ až }14\text{ }\mu\text{m}\)), Entamoeba histolytica. Způsobuje výbušné vodnaté průjmy, křeče, nevolnost (inkubace 2 až 14 dní). 1. Jakýkoli neporušený mikrofiltr \(0.1\text{ až }1.0\text{ }\mu\text{m}\).
2. Boiling (1 min).
3. UV Light (SteriPEN / SODIS).
4. Chlorine Dioxide (4 hours Počkejte).
Iodine (Betadine / Potable Aqua) and Household Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) CANNOT reliably kill Cryptosporidium oocysts (which have a triple-layered spore-like shell).
2. Bacteria \(0.2\text{ to }5.0\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) (Medium) Escherichia coli (E. coli O157:H7), Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Leptospira. Causes acute fever, vomiting, bloody dysentery within 12 to 72 hours. ALL METHODS WORK: Intact \(0.1\text{ to }0.2\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) filters, Boiling, Chlorine Dioxide (15 min), Household Bleach (30 min), Iodine (30 min), and UV/SODIS. A cracked/frozen hollow-fiber filter or untreated murky water.
3. Střevní viry \(0,02\text{ až }0,1\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) (Drobný, 100x menší než bakterie) Norovirus, Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, Enterovirus. Causes violent projectile vomiting and diarrhea within 12 to 48 hours (common near high-use campsites or human sewage). 1. vařící (1 min).
2. Chemická dezinfekce (Chlorine Dioxide, Bleach, Iodine, 15 to 30 min).
3. UV Light or \(0.02\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) Ultrafilter (MSR Guardian / Grayl).
Standard \(0.1\text{ to }0.2\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) Hollow-Fiber Filters (Sawyer, BeFree, QuickDraw) DO NOT remove viruses smoothly because viruses (\(0.02\text{ }\mu\text{m}\)) are 5x smaller than the \(0.1\text{ }\mu\text{m}\) pores.

Phase 3: Exact dosing and field protocols for Boiling, Chemicals, First-Aid Kit Iodine, and Rock-Boiling

When your primary filter fails, execute one of these five verified emergency disinfection protocols:

Method 1: Thermal Disinfection (Boiling and High-Altitude Physics)

  • Why High Altitude Doesn't Stop Boiling From Working: At sea level, water boils at \(100\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(212\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)). At 3,050 meters (10,000 feet), water boils at \(90\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(194\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)), and at 4,260 meters (14,000 feet) on Mount Rainier or Colorado's 14ers, water boils at \(85.5\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(186\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)).
  • Fortunately, thermal microbiology studies curated by the CDC and Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) prove that Cryptosporidium oocysts, Giardia cysts, E. coli, and Hepatitis A virus are inactivated within seconds once water temperature exceeds \(70\text{ to }85\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(158\text{ to }185\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)). By the time water reaches a rolling boil at any terrestrial mountain elevation up to 6,000 meters (19,600 feet), it has already spent several minutes climbing from \(70\text{ degrees Celsius}\) to \(85+\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (Pasteurization):
  • Below 2,000 meters (6,560 feet): Bring water to a vigorous rolling boil for 1 full minute.
  • Above 2,000 meters (6,560 feet): Bring water to a vigorous rolling boil for 3 full minutes (or boil for 1 minute and keep the lid tightly on the insulated pot for 5 minutes to hold heat above \(80\text{ degrees Celsius}\) and save canister stove fuel).
  • What if you have a campfire, a plastic water bottle (Nalgene / Smartwater), and NO metal pot? ("Hot-Rock Boiling" & "Plastic Bottle Fire-Boiling"):
  • Method A (Indigenous Hot-Rock Pit Boiling): Dig a small bowl-shaped pit in the ground, line it with a waterproof pack liner, rain jacket, or hollow log (or use a thick-walled HDPE Nalgene bottle with the wide mouth open), heat fist-sized dry terrestrial granite/basalt rocks in your campfire for 30 minutes (NEVER use wet river rocks from the streambed, which contain trapped water pockets that explode like shrapnel when heated in a fire), brush the ash off with a green stick, and drop 3 to 5 glowing-hot rocks using two forked sticks into the water vessel until the water boils vigorously for 1 to 3 minutes.
  • Method B (Boiling Directly Inside a Plastic PET Bottle Over Coals): Because liquid water inside a thin plastic Smartwater (PET) bottle absorbs heat from the plastic wall and cannot rise above \(100\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(212\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)), while PET plastic does not melt until \(250\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(482\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)), you can fill a plastic bottle completely to the very brim (leaving the cap OFF or loose so steam pressure doesn't explode the bottle) and hang it by its neck with a cord or green stick just above hot campfire coals until the water inside reaches a rolling boil.

Method 2: Emergency Chemical Disinfection Dosing Table (ClO2, Household Bleacha First-Aid Kit Povidone-Iodine)

Even if you forgot dedicated water purification tablets, your backcountry first-aid kit (10% Povidone-Iodine / Betadine antiseptic solution nebo 2% Tincture of Iodine) or vehicle emergency kit (Unscented Household Chlorine Bleach) can purify dozens of liters of water. Follow this exact CDC / EPA / WMS Dosing Chart per 1 Liter (1 Quart) of Water:

Chemický dezinfekční prostředek Přesná dávka na 1 litr (1 kvart) čisté vody Dávka pro zataženou NEBO velmi studenou vodu (\(< 5^\circ\text{C} / 41^\circ\text{F}\)) Povinný kontakt Čekací doba před pitím Kritická bezpečnost a lékařské kontraindikace
1. Tablety nebo kapky oxidu chloričitého (Aquamira / Katadyn Micropur MP1) 1 Tablet per 1 Liter (or 7 drops Part A + 7 drops Part B, mixed in cap for 5 min until yellow, per 1 Liter) 1 to 2 Tablets (or 14 drops A + 14 drops B for cloudy water) 15 až 30 minut pro bakterie, viry a Giardia.
4 CELÉ HODINY, pokud studená/zakalená voda může obsahovat Cryptosporidium.
Gold-standard chemical: The ONLY field chemical tablet that reliably penetrates and kills Cryptosporidium oocysts (when given the full 4-hour contact time).
2. Unscented Household Liquid Bleach (6% do 8.25% Sodium Hypochlorite) 2 Drops per 1 Liter (8 drops per US Gallon) 4 Drops per 1 Liter (16 drops per US Gallon) 30 minutes at room temp (15°C+).
60 minutes in icy mountain water (< 10°C / 50°F).
Use ONLY plain, unscented bleach (never splash-less, scented, or color-safe bleach). Treated water should have a faint chlorine smell after 30 minutes; if not, repeat dose once and wait 15 more minutes. Does NOT kill Cryptosporidium.
3. First-Aid Kit 10% Povidone-Iodine (Betadine Antiseptická kapalina) 8 kapek na 1 litr (0.4 mL na litr, dodává $\sim 4\text{ mg/L} $ volného jódu) 16 kapek na 1 litr (0.8 mL per Liter) 30 minutes in warm water.
60 minut ve studené vodě tajícího sněhu.
Verify the bottle says "10% Povidone-Iodine (1% available iodine)" and is NOT a surgical scrub containing soap/detergent. Do NOT use iodine if pregnant, if you have thyroid disease, or for more than 3 weeks.
4. First-Aid Kit 2% Tincture of Iodine (nebo Potable Aqua Tetraglycine Hydroperiodide Tablets) 5 Drops of 2% Tincture (or 2 Potable Aqua Tablets) per 1 Liter 10 Drops of 2% Tincture (or 2 Tablets + 60 min wait) per 1 Liter 30 minutes in warm water.
60 minutes in cold water.
Pro Tip to Remove Bitter Iodine Taste: AFTER the full 30-to-60-minute contact time is 100% finished, add a tiny pinch of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid / Emergen-C / citrus drink mix): it instantly converts bitter free iodine (\(\text{I}_2\)) into tasteless, colorless iodide (\(\text{I}^-\)). (NEVER add Vitamin C before the 60 minutes are up, or it neutralizes the iodine before it kills the germs).

Povinný krok pro všechny chemické metody: "Odvzdušnění nití lahví"

One of the most common ways hikers still get Giardia after using Aquamira, bleach, or iodine tablets is contaminated bottle threads: 1. When you dip your wide-mouth Nalgene or narrow-mouth Smartwater bottle into a creek to fill it, raw creek water clings to the outside and inside screw threads of the bottle neck. 2. Pokud do ní vhodíte chemickou tabletu a pevně zašroubujete uzávěr na 30 minut, upravená voda uvnitř láhve se nikdy nedotkne surové vody z potoka zachycené ve závitech šroubů a první doušek, který vypijete, vymyje tyto živé cysty Giardia přímo ze závitů do vašich úst. 3. How to Bleed the Threads: After adding your chemical drops/tablet and shaking the bottle for 30 seconds, unscrew the cap half a turn (two revolutions), turn the bottle upside down over the ground, and squeeze slightly so 15 milliliters (1 tablespoon) of the chemically treated water sloshes out over the neck threads and cap rim, then tighten the cap back down and start your 30-to-60-minute timer.

Phase 4: Zero-gear survival (Solar Disinfection SODIS, Gypsy Seepage Wells, and the Dehydration vs. Giardia Rule)

What if you are lost in the wilderness (see our lost while hiking or camping guide) with a broken filter, no stove, no lighter, and no chemicals?

1. The SODIS Method (WHO-Verified Solar UV-A + Thermal Disinfection)

Approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) uses the synergistic combination of solar UV-A radiation (\(320\text{ to }400\text{ nm}\)) and solar heating to destroy the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and Giardia/Cryptosporidium cysts inside a clear plastic bottle: 1. Use a clear, transparent PET plastic bottle (1 to 2 Liters, such as a clear Smartwater or soda bottle): Remove any paper label. (Note: thick colored Nalgene Tritan bottles or green/blue bottles block UV-A rays and are much less effective than clear colorless PET bottles). 2. Filter out turbidity first: Water must be clear enough that you can read newspaper print through the bottle. If murky, decant through a bandana first. 3. Fill the bottle 75% full, shake vigorously for 20 seconds to oxygenate the water (dissolved oxygen reacts with UV-A light to form lethal Reactive Oxygen Species / free radicals that shred pathogen membranes), then top the bottle completely full and cap it. 4. Lay the clear bottle horizontally in direct, unobstructed midday sun (ideally on a reflective silver space blanket, aluminum sleeping pad, or dark flat rock): - Sunny or Up to 50% Cloudy Sky: Expose for 6 continuous hours across the midday peak (09:00 to 15:00). (If the water inside the bottle heats above \(50\text{ degrees Celsius} / 122\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\), hot to the touch, inactivation completes in just 1 to 2 hours). - 100% Overcast Sky: Expose for 2 consecutive full days (do not use SODIS in heavy rain).

2. Choosing the Cleanest Natural Water Source & Digging a Gravel-Bar "Seepage / Gypsy Well"

If you must drink with minimal treatment, where you collect water changes your pathogen load by 99 percent: 1. Best to Worst Natural Sources (Ranked): - Rank 1 (Safest): Freshly Fallen Clean White Snow or Rainwater collected on a clean tarp/jacket (melt snow inside a bottle tucked inside your outer jacket layers, never eat raw snow if you are shivering or hypothermic, as melting 1 liter of \(0\text{ degrees Celsius}\) snow inside your stomach steals 80 kilocalories of core heat). - Rank 2: High-Elevation Springs Bubbling Directly Out of a Rock Wall or Talus Slope (filtered naturally through hundreds of meters of mountain rock strata). - Rank 3: Small, Fast, Steep Side-Feeder Brooks High on the Valley Wall (with no cattle grazing, trails, or beaver ponds above them). - Rank 4 (High Risk): Main Valley-Bottom Rivers and Alpine Lakes (which collect all upstream animal and human fecal runoff). - Rank 5 (Never Drink Raw): Stagnant Puddles, Water Downstream of Beaver Dams ("Giardia Factories"), or Cattle Stock Ponds. 2. How to Dig an Improvised Sand/Gravel-Bar Seepage Well ("Gypsy Well"): - Instead of scooping water directly out of a muddy or suspect river channel, walk onto a wet sand or fine gravel bar 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) back from the water's edge and dig a hole 30 to 60 centimeters (1 to 2 feet) deep below the water table level using a sharp stick, trekking pole, or flat rock. - Water from the river will slowly seep sideways through 1 to 2 meters of natural sand and fine gravel into the bottom of your hole. Let the first muddy fill settle, bail it out once or twice, and scoop the clear, sand-filtered water that refills the pit. Natural bank filtration through 1 meter of fine sand removes 80 to 95 percent of large protozoan cysts (Giardia and Cryptosporidium) and turbidity.

3. The Medical Golden Rule: Never Die of Dehydration Out of Fear of Giardia

Every year, wilderness search-and-rescue teams rescue (or recover the bodies of) lost hikers who suffered severe heat exhaustion, renal failure, or fatal falls caused by dehydration delirium while carrying an empty water bottle right beside a running mountain stream because they were terrified of drinking untreated water. - Memorize the Clinical Timeline: - Severe Dehydration: Reduces physical stamina and mental judgment within 6 to 12 hours, causes orthostatic syncope and kidney damage within 24 to 48 hours, and is fatal within 2 to 5 days. - Protozoan Parasites (Giardia / Cryptosporidium): Have a mandatory biological incubation period of 5 to 14 days before diarrhea starts. - Bottom Line: If you are out of water and have no way to boil, filter, or chemically treat water, ALWAYS DRINK THE WATER (using source selection and a sand seepage well to minimize risk). Staying hydrated keeps your brain sharp and your legs moving so you can hike out to safety days before a parasite could ever make you sick.

Tip

On any winter, spring, or high-altitude backpacking trip where overnight temperatures may dip below \(+4\text{ degrees Celsius}\) (\(39\text{ degrees Fahrenheit}\)), always shake excess water out of your hollow-fiber filter at dusk, seal it inside a Ziploc bag, and sleep with the filter inside the footbox of your sleeping bag or inside your zipped insulated jacket pocket, and always tape a 10-gram strip of Chlorine Dioxide tablets (Katadyn Micropur MP1) inside your first-aid kit as a zero-weight freeze-proof backup. Consider taking a hands-on Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course from NOLS, the Red Cross, or St John Ambulance.

Často kladené otázky

Why can't you use a Sawyer or Katadyn hollow-fiber water filter after it freezes?

Hollow-fiber membrane filters contain thousands of microscopic straw-like polymer tubes whose walls are perforated with 0.1-micron pores that physically block bacteria and protozoa. When wet water trapped inside those microscopic pores freezes into ice, it expands by 9 percent in volume and stretches or splits the microscopic pore walls open from the inside. Because the internal fibers are sealed inside an opaque plastic housing, the filter looks completely normal on the outside and still flows smoothly, but the enlarged tears allow microscopic Giardia cysts, Cryptosporidium oocysts, and E. coli bacteria to pass right through into your drinking bottle.

How long do you really need to boil water in the mountains to make it safe to drink?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS), bringing water to a vigorous rolling boil for 1 full minute (or 3 minutes at high elevations above 2,000 meters / 6,560 feet) kills 100 percent of all waterborne human pathogens, including Cryptosporidium, Giardia, bacteria, and viruses. Even though water boils at a lower temperature at high altitude (for example, 89 degrees Celsius / 192 degrees Fahrenheit at 3,350 meters / 11,000 feet), all waterborne pathogens are rapidly inactivated once water temperature exceeds 70 to 85 degrees Celsius (158 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit).

Does household bleach or first-aid kit iodine kill Cryptosporidium in backcountry water?

No. While unscented household chlorine bleach (2 to 4 drops per liter for 30 to 60 minutes) and 10% povidone-iodine or 2% tincture of iodine (5 to 16 drops per liter for 30 to 60 minutes) are highly effective against bacteria, viruses, and moderately effective against Giardia cysts, neither bleach nor iodine can penetrate the thick, triple-layered outer shell of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. To kill Cryptosporidium without a filter, you must either boil the water, use Chlorine Dioxide tablets/drops (Aquamira or Katadyn Micropur MP1) with a full 4-hour contact wait time, or use UV light (SteriPEN or 6-hour clear-bottle solar SODIS).
