Unknown AirTag or GPS tracker detected

Modern Bluetooth location trackers (such as Apple AirTags, Samsung Galaxy SmartTags, and Tile devices) or hardwired GPS units can be misused to track someone without their knowledge. When your smartphone alerts you that an unknown item is moving with you, take calm, deliberate steps to protect your personal safety.

Do this now

  1. Prioritize personal safety: If you feel you are in immediate danger or suspect you are being actively followed, drive or walk to a public police station, fire station, or busy public venue. Do not return directly to your home.
  2. Listen for the alert sound: Tap the safety notification on your iPhone or Android device to make the unknown tracker play a sound. Follow the sound to locate the item.
  3. Inspect common hiding spots on vehicles: Search wheel wells, under front and rear bumpers, inside trailer hitches, under magnetic key boxes, beneath car seats, inside glove boxes, and in outer jacket or bag pockets.
  4. Document the serial number before disabling: Hold the top of your smartphone near the tracker to read its serial number and registration details. Take screenshots of the alert and photo evidence of where it was found.
  5. Disable the tracker safely: For an AirTag, twist counterclockwise on the back stainless steel battery cover and remove the CR2032 coin battery. Removing the battery stops location updates completely while preserving physical evidence.

Smartphone detection tools

  • iPhone notifications: iOS automatically displays "AirTag Detected Moving With You" or "Unknown Accessory Detected" when an unregistered tracker travels with your device over time.
  • Android built-in tracker alerts: Modern Android devices automatically send "Unknown tracker alert" notifications. You can also manually trigger a scan under Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts.
  • Manual scanning apps: On older Android phones, download official apps like Tracker Detect to scan your immediate surroundings for Bluetooth location tags.

Reporting to law enforcement

Unlawful location tracking is a criminal offense in many jurisdictions. Bring the physical tracking device, documented serial number, and smartphone alert screenshots to local law enforcement. Officers can issue a subpoena to the manufacturer to obtain the account owner details associated with the tracker.
