Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.

DNS IP address (or has opened dozens of unauthorized UPnP port-forwarding rules exposing your NAS, cameras, and PCs to the public internet) is a severe network-level compromise. When an attacker compromises your Wi-Fi router or ISP gateway (Netgear, TP-Link, ASUS, Linksys, D-Link, MikroTik, Ubiquiti, Arris, Comcast Xfinity, AT&T BGW, BT Smart Hub), they control the default gateway (192.168.1.1 эсвэл 192.168.0.1) for every single device in your building simultaneously, including iPhones, Android phones, Smart TVs, work laptops, and IoT hubs that cannot install traditional antivirus software.

Worse, modern router malware families (VPNFilter, KV-Botnet, RaptorTrain, Volt Typhoon, ZuoRAT, Cyclops Blink, ба GhostDNS) use two distinct persistence mechanisms: some merely alter non-volatile NVRAM settings (DNS servers, CWMP / TR-069 remote management, and UPnP tables) via Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) or default admin passwords, while advanced botnets stage payloads inside /tmp RAM or overwrite the Linux MTD SPI flash partitions. For related network and NAS compromises, read DNS hijacking, ISP router WAN reconfiguration, and captive portal spoofing, compromised home or small office NAS, DeadBolt ransomware, and UPnP shutoff, ба securing home routers and IoT devices. If your network compromise affects medical telemetry equipment or physical life-safety systems, switch immediately to cellular data and call your local emergency number

  1. Disconnect your phones and laptops from the compromised Wi-Fi network immediately and DO NOT click "Update", "Install Certificate", эсвэл "Verify Account" on any browser pop-up:
  2. Why rogue DNS pop-ups are lethal: When a hijacked router points your DHCP DNS resolver to a malicious IP address, typing a normal domain name (or when your OS checks connectivity via msftconnecttest.com / captive.apple.com) redirects your browser to an attacker-controlled server hosting ClickFix / Lumma Stealer / Fake Chrome Update malware or a fake ISP login page. Switch your smartphones to cellular 5G/LTE immediately.
  3. Pull the power plug on the router for 60 seconds FIRST (Stage-2 /tmp RAM Malware Flush), then connect a single clean computer via an Ethernet cable (with Wi-Fi turned OFF) to inspect and reset the router:
  4. Why the FBI recommends an immediate power cycle: Most multistage router botnets (VPNFilter, KV-Botnet, ZuoRAT) cannot write their large active packet-sniffing and proxy binaries to tiny read-only SquashFS flash partitions; instead, they run Stage 2 and Stage 3 in volatile RAM (/tmp эсвэл /var/run). Unplugging the power cord for 60 seconds immediately kills the active in-memory packet interceptor so you can safely access the router admin page to wipe Stage 1 persistence and reflash the firmware.
  5. Know the truth about the "30-30-30 Hard Reset" vs. Modern Bootloader / NVRAM Factory Reset:
  6. For decades, guides recommended the 30-30-30 reset (holding the reset pinhole for 30 seconds powered on, 30 seconds unplugged, and 30 seconds while plugging power back in).
  7. Technical reality: The 30-30-30 timing was specific to legacy Broadcom CFE (Common Firmware Environment) bootloaders running DD-WRT. On modern ARM болон MIPS routers running U-Boot (ASUS, TP-Link, Netgear, UniFi, GL.iNet), unplugging the power while holding the Reset button during boot actually throws the router into Bootloader TFTP / Crashed Recovery mode rather than wiping NVRAM.
NVRAM on any modern router: leave the power cord plugged in and the router fully booted, press and hold the recessed Reset
  9. Reflash the latest official factory firmware image (.bin / .chk / .trx / .img) downloaded over a clean cellular connection BEFORE reconnecting the WAN (Internet) Ethernet cable:
  10. If you factory-reset a router while its WAN port is still plugged into the public internet, automated botnet scanners (Shodan / Censys mass-exploitation scripts targeting WAN management ports 8080, 8443, 7547 TR-069, эсвэл UPnP SOAP) can re-exploit an unpatched vulnerability or default admin/admin login within 90 seconds of the reboot.
  11. Download the latest firmware file using your phone's cellular hotspot first, unplug the WAN cable from the router, perform the factory reset, upload the firmware file offline via 192.168.1.1, set a new 20-character admin password, and only then plug the WAN internet cable back in.
  12. Disable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), NAT-PMP, Remote WAN Management, ба WPS immediately in the router settings:
  13. Ninety percent of unauthorized port-forwarding compromises happen because UPnP is enabled by default on consumer routers: any infected smart TV, IoT camera, or browser script on your local network can send an unauthenticated UPnP IGD SOAP XML request (AddPortMapping) хүртэл 192.168.1.1:1900 instructing the router to open external firewall ports straight to your internal NAS (port 5000/445) or Windows PC (port 3389 RDP).
  14. Flush the local DNS Cache болон ARP Cache on every Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android device, and enable Encrypted DNS (DNS-over-HTTPS / DoH эсвэл DNS-over-TLS / DoT):
  15. Even after you fix the router, your laptops and phones will continue routing traffic to the attacker's IP addresses until their cached DNS TTLs expire or you manually flush the OS and browser DNS caches (ipconfig /flushdns).

Danger

Check If Your Router Has Reached "End-of-Life" (EoL) With Zero Security Patches: State-sponsored and criminal botnets (Volt Typhoon, KV-Botnet, RaptorTrain, Quad7) specifically target End-of-Life routers (such as older Netgear ProSAFE/Nighthawk, Cisco RV320/RV325, Linksys E-series, ASUS RT-AC series, DrayTek Vigor, and TP-Link Archer models) whose manufacturers no longer release firmware patches for known CVE remote code execution bugs. If your router's latest firmware on the manufacturer's support page is more than 24 months old (or the model is listed as End-of-Support / EoL), do not try to reuse it. Unplug it permanently and replace it with a currently supported router.

Phase 1: How to prove whether your router's DNS or UPnP table has been hijacked (Forensic Audit)

Before wiping the router, take 2 minutes to inspect what was modified so you know whether the attacker only poisoned DNS (GhostDNS загвар) эсвэл дотоод сүлжээндээ дамжуулсан портуудыг (UPnP / NAT intrusion).

1. Auditing your active DNS servers from the command line (nslookup / scutil / resolvectl)

Open a Terminal or Command Prompt on a computer connected to the network and run: - Windows (Command Prompt / PowerShell):

ipconfig /all
nslookup example.com
- macOS (Terminal):
scutil --dns | grep 'nameserver\[[0-9]*\]'
- Linux (Terminal):
resolvectl status

Compare the DNS Servers IP address returned by your router against this table of legitimate vs. hijacked configurations:

DNS Server IP Shown in Your Router or OS What It Means Is It Safe or Compromised?
192.168.1.1 / 192.168.0.1 / 10.0.0.1 (Your Router's Local LAN IP) Your computer is using your router's built-in dnsmasq DNS forwarder. You must now log into the router's admin page (192.168.1.1) and look at the WAN / Internet DNS setting to see where the router itself forwards queries. Check Router WAN DNS: Even when ipconfig looks normal (192.168.1.1), a hijacked router forwards your queries upstream to a malicious WAN DNS server.

2. Auditing your Router's UPnP болон Port Forwarding / Virtual Server Хүснэгт

Advanced -> NAT Forwarding / Port Forwarding / UPnP: - Look at the UPnP Portmap Table (идэвхтэй UPnP түрээс): - Хууль ёсны тоглоомын консолууд нь өндөр UDP портуудыг (жишээ нь UDP 3074 Xbox/Call of Duty-д зориулсан). - Signs of active compromise: If you see UPnP гадаад TCP портуудыг ** руу дамжуулах дүрэмPort 445 (SMB), Port 3389 (Windows Remote Desktop / RDP), Port 22 (SSH), Port 5000 / 5001 / 8080 (Synology / QNAP NAS), Port 554 (RTSP Security Cameras), or Port 1080 / 9050 (SOCKS5 Proxy Botnet), malware inside your network (or a WAN UPnP SOAP exploit) has punched holes directly through your firewall. - Also check Advanced -> Security -> Remote Management (WAN Access) and Firewall -> DMZ: - Verify that Remote Management (Web Access from WAN) is DISABLED (OFF) and that DMZ Host is DISABLED (Blank / 0.0.0.0). Attackers who breach a router almost always turn on Remote Management on Port 8080 / 8443 эсвэл дотор нь дотоод IP байрлуул DMZ so they can get back in later.

Phase 2: Step-by-step router eradication, NVRAM reset, and offline firmware reflash

Never simply log into a compromised router and type 8.8.8.8 back into the DNS box without resetting and reflashing it: if the attacker planted a cron job, modified dnsmasq.conf, enabled TR-069 (CWMP) rogue auto-configuration, or exploited an unpatched firmware vulnerability, the rogue DNS setting will come right back 10 minutes later.

Execute this 6-step clean room recovery:

Step 1: Download the latest official firmware and tools BEFORE disconnecting the internet

  1. Using a smartphone on cellular data (with Wi-Fi turned OFF) or a computer tethered to your phone's cellular hotspot:
  2. Look at the physical sticker on the bottom of your router and read the exact Model Number AND the Hardware Revision (Ver: 1.0, v2, v4.20). (Flashing Hardware v1 firmware onto a v2 router can brick it.)
  3. Go directly to the manufacturer's official support website (asus.com, tp-link.com, netgear.com, linksys.com, ui.com) and download the latest firmware .zip archive to your computer.
  4. Extract the .zip file so you have the raw .bin, .chk, .trx, эсвэл .img firmware file ready on your Desktop.

Step 2: Isolate the router from the WAN (Internet) and flush volatile RAM

  1. Unplug the WAN Ethernet cable (the cable coming from your fiber ONT or cable modem into the blue/yellow Internet / WAN port on your router).
  2. Unplug all LAN Ethernet cables except for one clean laptop/PC (with its Wi-Fi turned OFF).
  3. Unplug the router's power cord from the wall for 60 full seconds: This completely discharges the motherboard capacitors and destroys any Stage-2/Stage-3 malware running in /tmp RAM.

Step 3: Perform a proper Hardware NVRAM Factory Reset (And why to avoid 30-30-30 on modern routers)

  1. Plug the router's power cord back in (keep the WAN internet cable unplugged) and wait 2 full minutes until the router finishes booting up completely.
  2. Using a paperclip or SIM-ejector tool, press and hold the recessed Reset pinhole button on the back of the router:
  3. Standard U-Boot / Modern Linux Routers (ASUS, TP-Link, Netgear, Linksys, Ubiquiti, Synology, Eero): Hold the Reset button continuously for 15 to 30 seconds while the router is powered on until all LED lights blink rapidly or turn amber, then release the button and wait 3 minutes for the router to reboot with a wiped NVRAM partition.
  4. ASUS Specific "Hard Factory Reset" (NVRAM + /jffs Partition Wipe): On ASUS routers (RT-AX, RT-BE, GT-AX series), malware or rogue scripts can hide inside the persistent /jffs flash partition which survives a normal reset. To wipe both NVRAM болон /jffs on an ASUS router:
    1. Turn the router power OFF.
    2. Press and hold the physical WPS button (not the Reset button).
    3. While holding the WPS button, turn the router power ON.
    4. Keep holding WPS for 15 seconds until the Power LED starts flashing quickly, then goes dark/reboots, and release. This executes a hardware-level NVRAM + /jffs erase.

Step 4: Reflash the firmware offline and lock down the administration plane

  1. On your Ethernet-connected computer, open a private/incognito browser window and go to the router's default IP (http://192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1,
  2. Complete the initial setup wizard offline and immediately set a unique, 20-character Administrator Password (never reuse your Wi-Fi password as the router Admin password).
  3. ** руу очихAdministration / System -> Firmware Upgrade -> Manual / Local File Upload**, select the official firmware file you downloaded in Step 1, and flash it. Even if the version number is the same as what was already installed, reflashing overwrites the rootfs system image and verifies the cryptographic firmware signature.
  4. Once the router reboots after the firmware flash, verify these 6 Mandatory Hardening Settings before plugging the internet cable back in:
  5. UPnP (Universal Plug and Play): Set to DISABLED / OFF.
  6. Remote Management (WAN Web Access / HTTPS from WAN / SSH from WAN): Set to DISABLED / OFF.
  7. TR-069 / CWMP (On Retail Routers): Set to DISABLED / OFF (unless required by a fiber ISP gateway).
  8. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup PIN / Pushbutton): Set to DISABLED / OFF.
  9. Wi-Fi Security: Set to WPA3-Personal (or WPA2/WPA3-Personal AES; never WPA/TKIP эсвэл WEP) with a brand-new Wi-Fi passphrase.
  10. WAN DNS Server: Manually set Primary DNS to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 9.9.9.9 (Quad9 Malware-Blocking DNS) and Secondary DNS to 1.0.0.1 эсвэл 149.112.112.112 (and enable DNS-over-TLS / DoT on the router if supported).
  11. Plug the WAN (Internet) cable back into the router.

Phase 3: Flushing poisoned DNS caches on all devices and enabling Encrypted DNS (DoH / DoT)

Even after your router is 100 percent clean, any laptop, desktop, or smartphone that was connected during the hijack may still hold poisoned DNS records (TTL up to 7 days), a modified local hosts file, or a poisoned browser socket pool.

Step 1: Check the local hosts file and flush OS + Browser DNS caches

  1. Verify malware did not write fake entries into your computer's local hosts file:
  2. Windows: Open Notepad as Administrator and open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.
  5. Windows (Run Command Prompt as Administrator):
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    arp -d *

  6. macOS (Terminal):
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Clear host cache.
Flush socket pools.

8. Isolate Smart TVs, IP Cameras, and IoT Devices onto a Guest Wi-Fi Network (VLAN / AP Isolation):
  9. The vast majority of internal UPnP router compromises originate from a cheap IoT camera, smart plug, or Android TV box on your main Wi-Fi network that joins a botnet and sends UPnP IGD commands to 192.168.1.1.
  10. Enable your router's Guest Wi-Fi Network with Access Intranet / Allow guests to see each other and access my local network set to OFF (Client Isolation), and move all Smart TVs, cameras, robot vacuums, and smart appliances onto that isolated Guest SSID so they can never talk to your router's LAN management IP (192.168.1.1) or your work laptops again.

How did a hacker change the DNS settings inside my home router if they were not sitting in my house on my Wi-Fi?

Attackers compromise home and small-office routers remotely without ever being near your Wi-Fi using three primary methods: (1) Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) and DNS Rebinding: Та гэртээ компьютер дээрээ байхдаа хортой зарын скрипт агуулсан энгийн вэбсайт руу зочилно; тэр скрипт нь HTTP POST хүсэлтийг таны хөтөчөөс шууд таны локал чиглүүлэгч рүү чимээгүй илгээдэг (http://192.168.1.1/apply.cgi), and if your router still uses the default password (admin / admin эсвэл admin / password), the script rewrites your router's WAN DNS servers in 1 second. (2) Exposed WAN Management or TR-069 (Port 7547 / 8080 / 8443): Automated internet scanners find routers with Remote Administration left open or unpatched firmware vulnerabilities and inject commands directly from the internet; and (3) UPnP WAN Exposure: Older or misconfigured routers accidentally expose their UPnP SOAP daemon (port 1900 / 5000) to the WAN interface, allowing anyone on the internet to add port-forwarding rules or change SetDNSServer settings without a password.

Why did you say the famous "30-30-30 Hard Reset" doesn't work on modern routers and can actually cause problems?

The 30-30-30 reset (holding Reset for 30s with power on, 30s with power off, and 30s while powering back on) was written 20 years ago specifically for Linksys WRT54G routers running DD-WRT on Broadcom CFE bootloaders. On almost every modern router manufactured in the last 12 years (ASUS, TP-Link, Netgear, Linksys Velop, UniFi, MikroTik), holding down the physical Reset button while plugging in the power cord is the hardware trigger to halt normal boot and enter Bootloader TFTP Firmware Recovery Mode (where the power light blinks slowly waiting for a TFTP server, and NVRAM is not erased at all). To properly wipe NVRAM back to factory defaults on any modern router, keep the power cord plugged in while the router is fully booted up, hold the Reset pinhole for 15 to 30 seconds until the lights flash, and let it reboot on its own.

If I disable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) on my router for security, will it break my work Zoom calls, Netflix streaming, or web browsing?

No, disabling UPnP has zero effect on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Netflix, YouTube, Slack, email, or web browsing. All standard internet applications initiate outbound connections from your device to the cloud server, which your router's Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) NAT firewall handles automatically without UPnP. The only things that use UPnP are peer-to-peer multiplayer console games (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch hosting lobbies), BitTorrent clients, and self-hosted servers (Plex) trying to accept unsolicited inbound connections from strangers on the internet. Leaving UPnP turned OFF is recommended by the NSA, CISA, ба FBI because it prevents malware or rogue IoT devices inside your home from secretly opening firewall ports to the public internet.

What if my router is a rented ISP combo modem/gateway (like Comcast Xfinity xFi, AT&T BGW320, or Spectrum) and it won't let me change the DNS servers or flash firmware?

Many ISP-supplied gateway modems lock down the WAN DNS fields in the web interface so customers cannot change them, and manage firmware exclusively over the ISP's coaxial/fiber headend via DOCSIS эсвэл TR-069. If an ISP-rented gateway is exhibiting rogue DNS behavior or unauthorized port forwards: (1) Hold the physical recessed Reset pinhole on the back of the ISP gateway for 20-30 секунд to force a factory reset and fresh DOCSIS / ONT bootfile download from your ISP; (2) Log into your ISP mobile app (Xfinity, SmartHomeManager, My Spectrum) to change your account password and review any app-configured Port Forwards; and (3) Configure Encrypted DNS (ЭМГ / DoT) directly on your laptops, phones, and browsers (as shown in Phase 3 above), or put the ISP gateway into Bridge Mode / IP Passthrough Mode and connect your own secure retail router behind it.
