Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.
This guide gives students and parents a realistic plan for the last 24 to 72 hours: how to choose what to study, how to study so it sticks, how to protect sleep, and how to avoid the dangerous shortcuts of heavy caffeine, energy drink overuse and taking stimulant medicines that were not prescribed to you. It also explains when stress has become a health concern and who to contact.
- Count your hours honestly. Write down how many hours you have before the exam, subtract sleep (at least 7 to 8 hours a night), meals, travel and breaks, and see what is left. This is your real study time.
- List the topics and mark them. Rank each topic by how much it is worth in marks and how well you know it. Focus on high mark topics you partly know.
- Use active study, not rereading. Test yourself with questions, flashcards, past papers and blank page recall.
- Study in blocks of 25 to 50 minutes with 5 to 10 minute breaks. Move, drink water and look away from screens during breaks.
- Protect your sleep. Go to bed at a normal time, even if you feel behind. Sleep is when memory is stored.
- Keep caffeine modest and skip energy drinks and any medicine not prescribed to you. If you feel tempted to use stimulants to stay awake, talk to a counsellor or doctor first.
If you feel hopeless, panicked, or in danger at any point, call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) or a crisis line. The आपत्कालीन क्रमांक page lists contacts by country.
What cramming can and cannot do¶
Cramming means packing a lot of study into a short period. Research on learning consistently shows that spreading study over time gives better long term memory than cramming. But when time is short, a well planned last minute push can still raise your marks, particularly for recall of facts, formulas and exam technique.
Being honest about the limits helps you plan. You will not master a whole course in two days. You can, however, secure the most valuable marks, avoid careless errors, and walk into the room calm. A realistic goal beats an impossible one.
What helps in a short time¶
- Focusing on the topics worth the most marks.
- Practising with past papers under timed conditions.
- Active recall, which means testing yourself instead of rereading.
- Learning the exam format, so you spend less time confused on the day.
- Getting enough sleep, which makes your study time more effective.
What does not help¶
- Studying all night with no sleep.
- Rereading notes passively.
- Highlighting everything.
- Jumping between topics without a plan.
- Heavy use of caffeine or energy drinks.
- Taking someone else's prescription pills to focus.
- Comparing yourself with classmates and panicking.
Triage: deciding what to study¶
When you cannot cover everything, triage helps. Doctors use triage to decide who needs help first, and you can borrow the idea.
Step 1: Gather your materials¶
Collect the syllabus or specification, past papers, mark schemes, your notes and textbook headings. If you are unsure what is on the exam, ask your teacher. Look for any official list of topics, formula sheets, or a blueprint from the exam board.
Step 2: Score each topic¶
Write your topics in a table. Rate each topic on two scales of 1 to 3: how many marks it is likely worth, and how well you know it now.
| Topic | Marks value (1 low, 3 high) | Knowledge (1 weak, 3 strong) | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example: Topic C |
| Example: Topic D | 2 | 3 | Maintenance: quick review |
Aim first at topics with high marks and medium knowledge, since a little study there gains a lot. Topics with high marks and very low knowledge come next if the content can be learned in a few hours. Low mark and low knowledge topics are the ones to drop.
You can do this with flashcards, a blank sheet of paper, or by explaining the topic aloud to a friend, a pet or the wall.
Spaced mini reviews¶
Even in a short time, you can space your study. Review a topic, then revisit it a few hours later, and again the next day. Each revisit locks it more firmly in memory.
Summaries and mind maps¶
For lists of facts, use memory aids such as acronyms, rhymes or a mental walk through familiar rooms. Break long lists into groups of three to five. A strange or funny image is often easier to recall than a plain list.
Teaching and talking¶
Marks are lost by misreading questions, running out of time and failing to show working. Practise reading the command words, such as describe, explain, evaluate and compare, and know what each asks for. Plan how to use your time across the paper. These skills can be learned quickly and can add marks without more content.
A realistic 72 hour plan¶
The following plan is a template. Adjust it to your exam time and your needs. It assumes you sleep 7 to 9 hours each night, which is not negotiable if you want to remember what you learn.
Day 3 before the exam (72 to 48 hours)¶
- Morning: Do the triage, gather materials, and make your plan. Start with your highest priority topic. Use active recall and past paper questions.
- Midday: Eat a proper lunch and take a 20 to 30 minute walk.
- Afternoon: Study the second priority topic in blocks of 25 to 50 minutes. Take breaks.
- Evening: Do a mixed session of flashcards or practice questions. Stop at a set time.
- Night: Wind down and sleep.
Day 2 before the exam (48 to 24 hours)¶
- Midday: Lunch and a short outdoor break.
- Evening: Review summaries lightly. Practise a few exam questions.
- Night: Wind down early, pack your bag, and sleep.
- Morning: Review your one page summaries and fix remaining weak points. Do a few questions to stay warm.
- Midday: A good lunch and a walk.
- Evening: Stop new learning. Follow the plan in the guide on the night before a big test.
- Night: Sleep.
If you have only 24 hours¶
Compress the plan.
- Spend the first hour on triage and a plan.
- Spend the next four to six hours on top priority topics using active recall and past paper questions.
It feels logical to cut sleep to study more. But sleep consolidates memory, and loss of it lowers attention, mood and reasoning. After a night with little or no sleep, performance on many tasks drops noticeably.
Minimum targets¶
- Teenagers should try for 8 hours or more, adults 7 or more.
- If you must shorten, avoid cutting more than an hour or so, and never skip a whole night.
- Keep wake up time steady.
- A short nap of 20 to 30 minutes in the early afternoon can help, but long late naps can disrupt night sleep.
Study smarter, not later¶
Studying with high focus for four hours is better than studying with low focus for eight. If you notice you are rereading the same line, take a break, move or sleep. Your plan should include rest, not as a reward but as part of the method.
Caffeine: how much is safe¶
General limits¶
Health bodies give broad guidance, which can differ by country:
| Group | Typical guidance on caffeine |
|---|---|
| Healthy adults | Up to about 400 mg a day is generally considered not to raise safety concerns (United States FDA and the European Food Safety Authority) |
The European Food Safety Authority uses about 3 mg per kilogram of body weight per day as a safe level, and the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages energy drinks |
| Pregnancy | Lower limits recommended. Check with a doctor |
For comparison, a typical cup of brewed coffee has roughly 80 to 100 mg, a cup of tea roughly 30 to 50 mg, and a can of energy drink anywhere from about 80 to over 300 mg depending on the product. Check labels, since amounts vary a lot.
Practical caffeine rules for cramming¶
- Keep to your usual amount. Do not start drinking large amounts you are not used to.
- Stop caffeine by early afternoon, since it can linger for 6 hours or more.
- Do not use caffeine to replace sleep or food.
- Drink water alongside it.
- Watch for warning signs: pounding heart, trembling, nausea, severe anxiety, headaches, or trouble sleeping. If you feel these, stop and drink water, eat something, and rest.
- Avoid caffeine pills and powders. These can deliver a dangerous dose in a tiny amount, and serious poisoning can occur.
If you or someone you know has taken a large amount of caffeine, especially powder or tablets, and has a very fast heartbeat, vomiting, chest pain, confusion or seizures, call your local emergency number or poison control. See the guide on caffeine powder and energy supplement overdose.
Energy drinks¶
Energy drinks often combine high caffeine with sugar and other stimulants. Health bodies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics advise that children and teenagers should not drink them. Reports link heavy use with heart rhythm problems, anxiety, sleep disruption and, rarely, serious illness, especially when mixed with alcohol or taken in large quantities quickly.
Safer choices¶
- Water, since mild dehydration reduces focus.
- A balanced meal or snack for steady energy, such as fruit, nuts, yoghurt or wholegrain toast.
- Fresh air and daylight.
- A short nap, if you are very sleepy.
- A small amount of your usual tea or coffee, early in the day.
If you notice you are relying on several energy drinks a day to get through the week, take that as a sign to speak to a doctor or school counsellor about sleep, stress and study habits.
Stimulant misuse¶
Some students are offered prescription stimulant medicines, such as those used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, by friends or classmates who say they help with studying. Others buy pills online. This is risky and in many countries illegal.
- Prescription stimulants are given to specific people after a medical check, and the dose and safety are monitored. Taking someone else's pills means you have no check on whether they suit you.
- Side effects can include a racing heart, raised blood pressure, anxiety, panic, insomnia, and in some cases serious heart problems or psychosis.
- Mixing with caffeine, energy drinks or alcohol raises the risk.
- Pills sold online or by strangers may be fake, and may contain other drugs, including dangerous opioids.
- There is little evidence that stimulants improve exam performance in people who do not need them, and the feeling of focus can be misleading.
- Misuse can lead to dependence and affects sleep and mood.
- Selling or sharing prescription medicine can have legal and school disciplinary consequences.
Counterfeit pills can be deadly
Pills sold as study aids or prescription tablets by friends or online can be fake and may contain powerful opioids or other drugs. One pill can cause an overdose. Never take a pill that did not come from a pharmacy with your name on it. If someone becomes very drowsy, cannot be woken, or has very slow breathing after taking a pill, call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) and read the guide on opioid overdose.
What to do instead¶
- Talk to a school counsellor or doctor if you feel you cannot focus. If attention difficulties are an ongoing problem, an assessment can help, and a doctor can discuss treatment options. This guide gives no medication advice.
- Ask your school about study support and exam accommodations. The guide on test accommodations and getting support explains how to request them.
- If you are pressured to use or share pills, say no, and tell a trusted adult.
- If you have already taken something and feel unwell, seek medical help and be honest about what you took. Doctors need accurate information to treat you, and they are there to help, not punish.
Practical study environment¶
- Study in a tidy, well lit place, with your phone out of reach or on a focus mode.
- Keep water and a healthy snack nearby.
- Use a timer for study blocks.
- Take breaks away from screens: walk, stretch, look at distant objects.
- Tell family or housemates when you need quiet.
- Keep your notes and materials organized, to avoid wasting time searching.
- Eat regular meals. Skipping meals lowers concentration.
Managing distractions¶
Phones and social media are the biggest time thieves. Put your phone in another room, or use an app or setting that blocks distracting apps during study blocks. Tell friends you will be offline. Check messages only during breaks. Group chats about the exam can raise panic, so mute them.
Staying calm while cramming¶
Time pressure raises stress, and stress can block learning. A few habits help.
- Breathe slowly when you notice panic: in for four, out for six to eight.
- Move for a few minutes each hour.
- Talk to someone each day, even briefly.
- Remind yourself you only need to do the next task, not all of them.
- Keep perspective. Exams matter, but most can be retaken or replaced by another route.
If panic builds, see the guides on test anxiety on exam day आणि panic attack during a test.
For a broader view on dealing with deadline pressure, the guide on emergency deadline panic and task triage offers more triage ideas.

Parents: how to help without adding pressure¶
If your child is cramming, they may feel guilty and scared. Judgement and lectures rarely help.
- Offer practical support: meals, a quiet space, snacks, water, lifts.
- Encourage sleep and breaks, and model them.
- Ask "What would help most?" instead of "Why did you leave it so late?"
- Keep an eye on caffeine and energy drinks, and talk about the risks calmly.
- Ask whether anyone has offered pills or supplements, and make it safe to answer honestly.
- Contact the school if your child is overwhelmed. The teacher may offer extra help, extended deadlines or advice.
- Avoid comparing with siblings or friends.
The guide on how parents can help a child through exam stress has more on what to say and what to avoid.
When to reach out for support¶
Short term pressure is normal. Reach out to a school counsellor, doctor or trusted adult if:
- You cannot sleep for several nights, even when you try.
- You feel constant dread, panic or a racing heart.
- You are thinking of not attending the exam out of fear.
- You feel hopeless or like a failure.
- You have a health problem or personal crisis that is affecting your studies.
If you cannot sit the exam because of illness or a serious event, contact your school or exam board as soon as possible. The guide on exam day logistics and emergencies covers special consideration and deferral.
Seek help straight away if you feel unsafe
If you have thoughts of suicide or self harm, or you feel you cannot cope, tell someone now. Call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) if you are in danger. In the United States and Canada you can call or text 988, in the United Kingdom and Ireland you can call Samaritans on 116 123, and young people in the United Kingdom can call Childline on 0800 1111. More countries are on the आपत्कालीन क्रमांक page, and the guide on mental health crisis explains how to help someone else.
After the exam¶
Once the paper is over, rest. Eat, drink, and avoid replaying every question. If you have more exams, review lightly, sleep and repeat your plan. If this exam did not go well, remember it is one result. The guide on what to do after a bad result covers appeals, retakes and coping.
Learning from the experience¶
Afterwards, when the pressure is off, think about what you would change. Maybe you will start a revision timetable earlier next time, break big topics into small tasks, or ask for help sooner. This is not self blame. It is a way of learning, and many successful students find that a rushed exam teaches them to plan better.
A quick checklist for the last 72 hours¶
- I counted my real study hours.
- I ranked topics by marks and knowledge.
- I have a written plan with specific tasks.
- I am using active recall and past papers.
- I take breaks and move.
- I am sleeping at least 7 to 8 hours.
- I am eating regular meals and drinking water.
- My caffeine is at my usual level or lower, and I am avoiding energy drinks.

Is cramming ever worth it?¶
