Why splashing and thrashing are fatal in the water

Never splash frantically, slap the water surface, or turn your back to swim wildly away from an approaching shark, alligator, or crocodile. Both sharks (via their lateral line system and inner ear) and crocodilians (via dome pressure receptors called Integumentary Sensory Organs lining their jaws and scales) are neurologically hardwired to home in on low-frequency acoustic vibrations (20 to 100 Hertz) and erratic surface pressure waves produced by struggling or wounded prey. Slow, smooth, deliberate strokes while facing the animal communicate that you are an alert, formidable creature rather than an injured fish or drowning mammal.

  1. Maintain direct eye contact and eliminate erratic splashing: If you see a shark in the water, stop thrashing immediately. Keep your body vertical or oriented directly toward the shark, move your fins or hands with slow, smooth, underwater strokes, and watch the shark continuously: sharks are ambush predators that strongly prefer to bite unawares from behind or below and frequently abort an approach when they realize the target is tracking them directly.
  2. Group tightly back-to-back or use your surfboard/speargun as a rigid shield: If diving or swimming with companions, move immediately together side-by-side or back-to-back so you can monitor 360 degrees of water and appear as one massive organism. If surfing, kayaking, or spearfishing, keep your surfboard, paddleboard, or speargun positioned flat between your torso and the circling shark as a physical bumper while backing steadily toward the beach or boat.
  3. Read the shark agonistic (threat) display and retreat immediately: If a shark drops its pectoral fins sharply downward into a V-shape, arches its back, raises its snout, and begins swimming in tight, jerky figure-eight loops or exaggerated lateral S-curves, it is signaling territorial irritation and preparing to strike. Back away smoothly toward the boat, reef wall, or shore without turning your back.
  4. Never approach the water's edge at dusk, night, or dawn in alligator or crocodile habitat: Stay at least 5 to 10 meters (16 to 33 feet) back from the bank of any lake, retention pond, canal, river, or mangrove estuary in crocodilian territory, keep dogs on a short physical leash away from the water, and never clean fish or throw food scraps near shore. If an alligator or crocodile on land hisses or lunges toward you, run straight away inland in a straight line (never run in slow zigzags; humans easily outrun crocodilians on dry land over distances past 5 meters / 16 feet).
  5. Target the eyes, gills, or palatal throat valve if bitten:
  6. Shark bite contact: Never play dead and never punch a shark's hard cartilaginous snout if your hand can slip into its mouth. Claw, gouge, or jab forcefully into the eyes and the gill slits with your fingers, dive knife, or speargun.
  7. Alligator or Crocodile bite contact: If grabbed by the jaws in shallow water or near the bank, brace your feet or hands immediately to prevent being dragged into deep water or spun into a "death roll" (if rolled, roll with the animal in the same direction to keep your limb from snapping off). Gouge both thumbs deep into the animal's eyes or pry down the muscular palatal valve (gular flap) at the very back of its tongue, which floods the reptile's windpipe with water and forces it to release its jaws immediately to keep from drowning.
  8. Apply a tourniquet before leaving the surfboard or beach edge: Over 80 percent of fatalities from shark and crocodilian bites result from rapid femoral or brachial artery exsanguination within 3 to 5 minutes. The instant the victim is pulled onto a surfboard, boat deck, or shoreline, apply a commercial windlass tourniquet (or an improvised surfboard-leash / wetsuit-strip tourniquet cranked with a stick or fin key) 5 to 8 centimeters (2 to 3 inches) above the limb bite, pack groin or torso bites tightly with cloth, elevate the legs, prevent hypothermia, and call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom, 000 in Australia; see all

- Why zigzags are dangerous: Alligators and crocodiles have a top land lunge speed of only 15 to 19 km/h (9.5 to 12 mph) over a short 3-to-5-meter (10-to-16-foot) burst before their belly drags and they exhaust rapidly. An average adult human runs at 20 to 28 km/h (12 to 18 mph) in a straight line. Running in zigzags cuts your forward speed in half, increases the risk of tripping on roots, and actually keeps you closer to the reptile's snapping jaws. - Correct land action: Run straight away inland in a direct line perpendicular to the riverbank. Within three strides, you are completely outside a crocodilian's land strike range.

3. In-Water Survival: Stopping the "Death Roll" and Opening the Palatal Valve

Crocodilians have the highest measured bite force in the animal kingdom (exceeding 16,000 Newtons / 3,700 PSI in large saltwater and Nile crocodiles), driven by massive jaw-closing adductor muscles. Paradoxically, the muscles that open a crocodilian's jaws are so weak that a human hand or a single wrap of electrical tape can hold a closed snout shut, meaning you can never pry open a closed crocodile or alligator jaw by pulling its teeth apart. Instead, use three biomechanical countermeasures:

  1. Countering the Rotational "Death Roll": Crocodilians cannot chew or slice meat with their conical peg teeth. To tear off a limb or drown large prey, the reptile clamps onto an arm or leg, tucks its four legs tight against its sides, and snaps its muscular tail to spin its entire body longitudinally at high speed (the death roll). If you resist the spin while your body stays stationary, your femur, humerus, or knee ligaments will snap immediately. To survive a death roll:
  2. Option A (Block the spin before it starts): Immediately wrap your free arm and legs around the reptile's torso or anchor yourself onto a thick submerged tree trunk or boat gunwale so the animal cannot initiate rotation.
  3. Option B (Roll with the spin): If your arm or leg is caught and the reptile begins spinning in open water, throw your entire torso into the spin in the exact same rotational direction as the alligator or crocodile so your body rotates with its jaws rather than letting your limb twist off at the joint.
  4. Gouge the Eyes and Strike the Nostrils: A crocodilian's dorsal neck plates (osteoderms) and flat skull roof are solid bone armor; hitting its head with a fist does nothing. However, its eyes (which automatically retract slightly into the skull when biting) and the tip of its nostrils are acutely sensitive. Drive both thumbs or a hard stick/knife deep into the eye sockets.
  5. The Ultimate Release Switch: Pull Down the Palatal Valve (Gular Flap):
  6. The Anatomy: How does a crocodile or alligator open its mouth underwater to bite prey without water pouring down its throat into its lungs? At the very back of a crocodilian's tongue sits a muscular, watertight curtain of flesh called the palatal valve (or gular flap) that seals tightly against the roof of the palate, completely isolating the windpipe (glottis) and esophagus from the water-filled mouth.
  7. How to Trigger Instant Release: If your hand or arm is inside or near the reptile's mouth and eye-gouging fails, reach straight into the back of the animal's throat behind the tongue and shove or pull down hard on the fleshy palatal flap. The instant that seal breaks open underwater, water rushes straight into the reptile's trachea and lungs. Triggered by an overpowering autonomic drowning reflex, the alligator or crocodile will immediately throw its jaws wide open, release you, and bolt to the surface to cough and breathe.

Pre-Hospital Trauma First Aid: Surfboard Tourniquets and Polymicrobial Care

1. Why Hemorrhage Control Must Happen BEFORE Leaving the Surfboard or Water's Edge

Forensic analysis of fatal shark and crocodile attacks reveals that most victims do not have their torso consumed; rather, a single bite to the thigh, calf, or upper arm severs the femoral, popliteal, or brachial artery. Because warm ocean water and adrenaline accelerate vasodilation and cardiac output, an unstopped femoral artery bleeds out in 120 to 240 seconds often while rescuers are still paddling the victim across a 100-meter (330-foot) surf break to the beach.

2. How to Improvise a Surfboard-Leash or Wetsuit Tourniquet in the Field

Every beach kit, dive boat, and swamp kayak should carry an official CoTCCC windlass tourniquet (such as a CAT Gen-7 or SOFTT-W) stored right inside a waterproof dry bag or board bag; see severe bleeding and tourniquets. If a shark bite happens on an isolated surf break with zero medical gear on hand: 1. Using a Surfboard Leg-Rope (Urethane Leash) on the Board: - Detach the velcro ankle cuff of the surfboard leash. - Wrap the wide padded neoprene ankle cuff around the top of the injured thigh or arm (5 to 8 centimeters / 2 to 3 inches above the bite never over the knee or elbow joint) and cinch the velcro down as tight as possible, OR wrap the urethane cord tightly two to three times over the wetsuit thigh (leaving the neoprene wetsuit on under a thin cord helps distribute pressure and prevents the thin urethane cord from slicing into bare skin while compressing the femoral artery against the femur bone) and tie it off under maximum tension. 2. Using a Cloth + Windlass Stick on the Beach (Preferred Over a Thin Cord Alone): - As soon as you reach the sand, fold a beach towel, t-shirt, rashguard, or a 5-centimeter (2-inch) wide strip of cut neoprene wetsuit into a flat band at least 4 to 5 centimeters (1.5 to 2 inches) wide. - Wrap it snugly above the bite and tie a half-knot. - Lay a strong driftwood stick, surfboard fin key, dive knife sheath, or metal water bottle on top of the half-knot and tie a full square knot over it. - Twist the stick like a propeller (windlass) until all bright red bleeding stops completely, then secure the end of the stick with the tail of the cloth or surfboard leash velcro so it cannot unwind.

3. Critical Post-Extraction Shock Positioning: Never Sit a Bite Victim Up

When pulling a shark or crocodile bite victim out of the water onto a boat or beach, keep their body horizontal (flat on their back). - Why sitting or standing up causes instant cardiac arrest (Circum-Rescue Collapse): A victim who has lost 30 to 40 percent of their blood volume into the water is compensating through extreme vasoconstriction and horizontal hydrostatic water pressure. If rescuers walk the victim up the beach or prop them upright in a beach chair, the remaining blood pools in the lower extremities, venous return to the right atrium drops to zero ("empty-heart syndrome"), and the patient suffers immediate pulseless electrical activity (PEA) arrest. Carry the patient horizontally on a surfboard or stretcher and keep them flat with legs slightly elevated if no spinal injury exists.

Aquatic predator bites are among the most heavily contaminated trauma wounds in medicine. Never suture or glue a shark, alligator, or crocodile bite closed immediately in the field. - (Gulf of Mexico) - Alligator and Crocodile Bite Bacteriology (Freshwater / Estuarine): Crocodilian teeth carry fecal and mud flora including Aeromonas hydrophila Edwardsiella tarda, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and anaerobic Clostridium species (gas gangrene and tetanus). Hospital teams must irrigate deep puncture tracts under high pressure, take tissue cultures, administer tetanus prophylaxis, and start broad-spectrum IV antibiotics covering Aeromonas and anaerobes.

Prevention Checklist for Swimmers, Surfers, Divers, and Paddlers

  • Carry a waterproof CoTCCC windlass tourniquet and hemostatic gauze: Strap a dedicated trauma pouch onto your dive boat, kayak deck, or surf pack so arterial hemorrhage can be stopped within 60 seconds of contact.

Take a Stop the Bleed and Wilderness First Aid course

Hands-on training in an official Stop the Bleed course and a Red Cross St John Ambulance or Surf Life Saving aquatic rescue class teaches you how to apply a windlass tourniquet to a wet, slippery limb and manage hypovolemic shock during beach or boat evacuations.

Should you punch a shark in the nose or gouge its eyes and gills if it attacks?

Can bull sharks really swim far up into freshwater rivers and lakes?

(Gulf of Mexico)

How do you improvise a tourniquet on a surfboard or beach after a shark bite?

If you do not have a commercial windlass tourniquet (such as a CAT or SOFTT-W) on hand, immediately use the wide padded neoprene velcro cuff of a surfboard leg-rope cinched as tightly as possible 5 to 8 centimeters (2 to 3 inches) above the bite while still on the board. Once on the sand, wrap a folded 5-centimeter (2-inch) strip of towel, t-shirt, or cut wetsuit above the wound, tie a half-knot, lay a strong stick or fin key on top, tie a square knot over it, and twist the stick like a propeller until all arterial bleeding stops completely.
