Ice storms, freezing rain, and power line collapse¶
Təcili yardım nömrələri ölkəyə görə fərqlənir. Bu səhifə ABŞ və Kanada üçün 911 rəqəmindən istifadə edir. Bir çox başqa ölkələr 112, 999 və ya başqa bir rəqəmdən istifadə edirlər. Ölkəniz üçün nömrəni tapın.
An ice storm is a destructive winter weather disaster caused by prolonged freezing rain, a meteorological phenomenon in which liquid rain falls through a sub-freezing layer of air just above the ground (\(0^\circ\text{C}\) [\(32^\circ\text{F}\)] or colder) and freezes on contact into a solid, transparent sheet of glaze ice across every exposed surface. Unlike fluffy snow that brushes off branches and wires, glaze ice has a density of roughly 900 kilograms per cubic meter (\(56\text{ pounds per cubic foot}\)): a radial ice accumulation of just 13 to 25 millimeters (0.5 to 1.0 inch) adds hundreds of kilograms (up to 500 to 1,000 pounds) of dead weight to a single power line span and several metric tons of ice to the canopy of a mature tree. As branches snap like rifle shots and steel transmission towers buckle in a domino effect, millions of homes can lose electricity and heat for days or weeks while roads turn into impassable sheets of frictionless ice.
Buz Fırtınasında Ən Böyük İki Qatil: Karbon Monoksid və Səssiz Canlı Tellər
Amerika Birləşmiş Ştatları Xəstəliklərə Nəzarət və Qarşısının Alınması Mərkəzləri (CDC), Ətraf Mühit və İqlim Dəyişikliyi Kanada və ictimai səhiyyə agentlikləri tərəfindən 1998-ci il Şimali Amerika Buz Fırtınası və 2021-ci ildə Texas/Cənub düzənliklərinin donması ilə bağlı tarixi ölüm araşdırmaları sübut edir ki, **buz fırtınası zamanı ölən insanların çoxu yağışdan SONRA ölür: 1. Qapalı məkanda karbonmonoksit (CO) zəhərlənməsi: Qarajda, zirzəmidə və ya eyvanda daşınan benzin generatorunu işə salmaq və ya istilik üçün qapalı yerlərdə kömür manqalını və ya propan sobasını yandırmaq evi qoxusuz karbonmonoksitlə doldurur və bütün yatmış ailələri 30 dəqiqədən az müddətdə öldürür. Bütün generatorları ən azı 6 metr (20 fut) açıq havada pəncərə və qapılardan uzaq saxlayın. 2. Səssiz Enerjili Elektrik Xətləri və Elektrikləşdirilmiş Ağaclar: Buz altında basdırılmış və ya metal zəncirvari hasarın və ya buzla örtülmüş ağac budağının üzərində dayanan yıxılmış elektrik xətti sıfır qığılcım, sıfır tüstü və sıfır uğultu səsi ilə 7200 ilə 34500 volt keçirə bilər. Hər yıxılan naqildən və naqillərə toxunan hər hansı ağac budaqlarından ən azı 10 metr (35 fut) uzaq durun.
Bunu indi edin¶
- Buz yığılarkən qapalı yerlərdə və iri asılmış ağacların altındakı otaqlardan uzaq durun. Radial şirli buz 6 millimetr (0,25 düym)-ü ötdükdən sonra nəhəng ağac budaqları və bütün dayaz köklü ağaclar xəbərdarlıq edilmədən damları aşırmağa başlayır, xüsusən də küləyin sürəti saatda **25-45 km/saatdan çox olduqda. Ailə üzvlərini və ev heyvanlarını bilavasitə ağır palıd, şam, ağcaqayın və ya ağcaqayın çətirlərinin altında yerləşən üst mərtəbədəki yataq otaqlarından və ən aşağı daxili mərtəbədəki sığınacaqdan çıxarın.
- Yollardan tamamilə uzaq durun: nə 4 Təkərli (4WD), nə də qış təkərləri yaş şirli buzları tuta bilməz. Dondurucu yağış hamar parıltılı buzun üzərində \(0^\circ\text{C}\) (32\(^\circ\text{F}\)) dəyərində maye sudan ibarət mikroskopik təbəqə yaradır, bu da məsafənin azalmasına səbəb olur. 10 qat. Hətta fövqəladə yanğınsöndürən maşınlar və qartəmizləyən maşınlar duz yük maşınları yolu müalicə edə bilməmişdən əvvəl taclanmış magistral yollardan yan tərəfə sürüşürlər. Dərhal həyat üçün təhlükə yaradan tibbi və ya struktur fövqəladə halları evakuasiya etmədikcə maşın sürməyin.
- Hər kəsilmiş naqili, asılmış kabeli və naqilə toxunan buz çəkisi olan ağac budaqlarını enerjili və ölümcül hesab edin. Düşmüş naqilin, elektrik dirəyinin və ya naqillərə toxunan metal hasarın ətrafında minimum 10 metr (35 fut) təhlükəsizlik perimetrini qoruyun (bundan sonra). Heç vaxt taxta süpürgə çubuğu və ya qar kürəyi ilə aşağı asılmış buz yüklü məftil və ya ağac budaqlarının altına əyilməyə və ya kənara itələməyə çalışmayın: yaş şirli buz yüksək gərginlikli elektrik cərəyanını tutacaqdan aşağı keçir və ürəyinizdən keçir. Elektrik xidməti təcili xəttinə və ya yerli təcili yardım nömrəsinə (ABŞ və Kanadada 911, Avropa İttifaqı üzrə 112, Birləşmiş Krallıqda 999) zəng edin və ya hamısına baxın təcili nömrələr).
- Avtomobilinizin üstünə elektrik xətti düşərsə, avtomobil alov almayana qədər içəridə qalın, sonra hər iki ayağınızla birlikdə tullanaraq uzaqlaşın/atlayın. Kabin içərisində oturarkən rezin təkərləriniz və metal avtomobil çərçivəniz qoruyucu Faraday qəfəsi rolunu oynayır. Yanğın sizi bayıra çıxararsa, qapını açın, heç vaxt metal avtomobilin kuzovuna və buzlu yerə eyni vaxtda toxunmayın, hər iki ayağınızın eyni vaxtda yerə enməsi və **ayaqlarınızı bir-birinə möhkəm basdıraraq qarışdırın və ya dovşan-hopun ən azı 10-15 metr (35-50 fut) bir ayağın gərginliyi və aşağı düşməsinin qarşısını almaq üçün ** atlayın. digər.
- Enerji kəsilərsə, ailənizi bir "mikro qızdırılan" daxili otağa birləşdirin. Bütün dondurulmuş evi qızdırmaq əvəzinə, kiçik bir daxili otaq seçin (ideal olaraq birinci mərtəbədə bir neçə pəncərəsi və cənub tərəfə baxması), pəncərələrin və qapının ağzına ədyal və ya ağır qobelenlər asın, dəsmalları qapının alt hissəsinə bükün, otağın üst hissəsinin qızdırılmasına və çətirin içərisinə dəsmal çəkin. kiçik bir hava həcminin içində qapalı qalır.
- Daxili məkanda karbonmonoksit zəhərlənməsinin və donmuş boruların dərhal partlamasının qarşısını alın. Şömine yandırmazdan və ya açıq havada generatoru işə salmazdan əvvəl batareya ilə işləyən hər bir Karbonmonoksit (CO) siqnalının işlədiyini yoxlayın (egzozu evdən uzağa yönəldilmiş ən azı 6 metr [20 fut] çöldə yerləşdirilmiş). İşıq kəsildikdə su borularının donması və partlamaması üçün mətbəx və vanna otağı lavabolarının altındakı şkafın qapılarını açın və ən uzaqdakı kranları yavaş, davamlı karandaş axınına çevirin və ya evin əsas su klapanını bağlayın və bütün kranları boşaldın** daxili temperatur \(0^\circ\text (\)0^\circ\text{2}$$F).

Meteorologiya və fizika: Niyə dondurucu yağış qar və ya sulu qardan daha təhlükəlidir?¶
Bir çox insanlar dondurucu yağışı sulu qar (buz qranulları) və ya qarla qarışdırırlar, lakin onların infrastruktura təsiri tamamilə fərqlidir. Hər ikisi buludların arasında yüksək isti hava təbəqəsindən keçən qar dənəcikləri kimi başlayır ("isti burun" \(0^\circ\text{C}\) [\(32^\circ\text{F}\)]) təxminən \(800\text{-}1500\text{metr}\) (\(2,60\text{0}) fut}\)) yüksəklik, qarı tamamilə maye yağış damcılarına əridir:
- Sulu qar (Buz qranulları): Yerin yaxınlığındakı dondurucu soyuq hava təbəqəsi dərindirsə (\(400\text{ - }600\text{ metr}\) [\(1,300\text{ - }2,000\text{fut}\)] qalınlığındadırsa), düşən yağış damcılarının buzları yenidən dondurmaq üçün kifayət qədər vaxtı var** yerə vurdu. Sulu qar ağac budaqlarından, elektrik xətlərindən və ön şüşələrdən quru qum kimi sıçrayır və nadir hallarda elektrik şəbəkəsini aşağı salır.
- Dondurulan Yağış (Glaze Buz): Yeri qucaqlayan dondurucu təbəqə dayazdırsa (yalnız \(100\text{ - }300\text{ metr}\) [\(300\text{ - }1,000\text{ fut}\)]), düşən maye yağış damcılarının donma vaxtı yoxdur. Əvəzində onlar supersoyudulmuş maye su damcılarına çevrilirlər (\(0^\circ\text{C}\) [\(32^\circ\text{F}\)]-dan aşağı soyudulmuş maye su). Həddindən artıq soyudulmuş yağış damcısı dərhal dondurulmuş elektrik xəttinə, ağac budaqına, körpünün göyərtəsinə və ya tutacaqa dəyir, nazik bir təbəqəyə yayılır və təmasda möhkəm şəkildə donaraq epoksi qatranı kimi obyektin ətrafında kilidlənir.
Sperry-Piltz Buz Akkumulyasiya İndeksi (SPIA) və çəki yükü fizikası¶
Amerika Birləşmiş Ştatları Milli Hava Xidmətinin (NWS) meteoroloqları və kommunal mühəndislər fəlakətli infrastrukturun çökməsini proqnozlaşdırmaq üçün küləyin sürəti ilə birlikdə radial buz qalınlığından istifadə edirlər:

Telecommunications towers collapse, roads are completely blocked by fallen forests, and grid reconstruction takes 2 to 6 weeks. |
Why wind turns a moderate glaze into a grid-destroying weapon: "Conductor Galloping"¶
Weight alone is only half the danger to power lines and trees. As freezing rain drips down the bottom of a cylindrical wire and freezes into icicles, it changes the cross-section of the wire from a smooth circle into a teardropshaped airplane wing (airfoil). When post-storm winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (20 to 38 miles per hour) blow across that ice-coated airfoil, aerodynamic lift causes the entire 100-meter span of heavy wire to buck up and down violently in waves 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) high, a phenomenon electrical engineers call conductor galloping. Galloping wires slam into each other (causing blinding blue-green arc flashes and transformer explosions) and rip wooden utility poles and steel crossarms straight out of the frozen ground.
Downed power lines, electrified trees, and ground-gradient "step potential" survival¶
During an ice storm, thousands of distribution lines (\(7,200\text{ to }34,500\text{ volts}\)) and household service drops (\(120/240\text{ volts}\)) are pulled down into yards, driveways, and sidewalks by falling tree limbs.
- Why live wires do NOT spark on ice or snow: Movies teach people that downed power lines always whip around throwing bright yellow sparks. In reality, high-voltage utility lines only arc and spark briefly when making intermittent contact; once resting on ice, snow, asphalt, or wet wood, an energized 13,800-volt line lies completely still and silent. In addition, utility grid automatic reclosers are programmed to automatically attempt to re-energize a tripped line several times over seconds or minutes to clear temporary branch contacts, meaning a "dead" wire can suddenly surge back to 13,800 volts while you are standing next to it.
- How wet glaze ice turns trees and fences into deadly conductors: When an ice-laden tree branch leans against an overhead distribution wire without snapping it, high-voltage current travels down through the wet glaze ice and sap of the tree trunk into the earth. Touching the tree trunk, stepping on its roots, or touching a metal chain-link fence or metal guardrail up to 100 meters (300 feet) away where a wire has fallen across the fence further down the street will electrocute you instantly.
- Understanding "Step Potential" and how to shuffle/hop to safety: When a high-voltage wire touches the ground, electricity radiates outward through the soil and ice in concentric rings like ripples in a pond: the ground right touching the wire might be at \(10,000\text{ volts}\), a ring \(1\text{ meter}\) (\(3\text{ feet}\)) away at \(7,000\text{ volts}\), and a ring \(2\text{ meters}\) (\(6\text{ feet}\)) away at \(4,000\text{ volts}\). If you take a normal walking stride near a downed line so your front foot is on the \(7,000\text{ V}\) ring and your back foot is on the \(4,000\text{ V}\) ring, \(3,000\text{ volts}\) of potential difference ("step potential") shoots straight up one leg, through your pelvis and torso, and down the other leg.
- Escape Technique: Press your ankles and feet tightly together so both feet stay at the exact same voltage potential, and shuffle heel-to-toe without ever lifting a foot or separating your soles by more than a few centimeters (or hop like a rabbit landing on both feet simultaneously) until you are at least 10 to 15 meters (35 to 50 feet) away from the wire, pole, or vehicle.
Watch Out for the Service Mast on Your House Roof
Before walking out your front or back door during or after an ice storm, look up at the electrical service drop and weatherhead mast where the power company wires attach to the corner of your roof. Very often, an ice-laden tree branch falls across the wire in your yard and rips the metal conduit mast partly off your house wall, leaving live 240-volt bare wires dangling right across your metal rain gutters, aluminum siding, or porch steps. If your weatherhead mast is bent, pulled loose, or torn down, stay away from the exterior wall and call your utility company and a licensed electrician before power can be restored.
Surviving a multi-day freezing blackout indoors without carbon monoxide poisoning¶
When an ice storm snaps thousands of individual neighborhood poles, utility line crews must saw through miles of fallen trees before they can set a single new pole, meaning residential neighborhoods routinely wait 3 to 14 days for power in sub-freezing temperatures.

Step-by-step: How to keep your home water pipes from freezing and bursting¶
Water expands by roughly 9 percent in volume when it freezes into ice at \(0^\circ\text{C}\) (\(32^\circ\text{F}\)), generating over 2,000 pounds per square inch (\(14,000\text{ kPa}\)) of hydraulic pressure downstream of the ice plug, enough to split copper, PVC, and even PEX plumbing pipes wide open inside your walls and flood your house the moment the ice thaws:
- While you still have some residual warmth in the house (Indoor temp between \(2^\circ\text{C}\) and \(10^\circ\text{C}\) [\(35^\circ\text{F}\) to \(50^\circ\text{F}\)]):
- Open all vanity and cabinet doors underneath kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room sinks (especially sinks mounted against an exterior outside wall) so room air can circulate around the pipes.
- Turn on both the hot and cold water handles at the faucets furthest from where your main water line enters the house until a continuous, pencil-lead-thin trickle flows into the drain. Moving water resists freezing, and an open faucet relieves destructive hydraulic pressure if an ice plug starts forming inside the pipe.
- If indoor house temperatures are dropping to or below \(0^\circ\text{C}\) (\(32^\circ\text{F}\)) or you are evacuating to a warming center:
- Do NOT rely on dripping faucets once the inside of the house freezes (more than all traps and drains themselves will freeze solid and overflow).
- Shut off the main house water valve immediately (located in the basement, utility closet, crawlspace, or outdoor underground meter box; turn a lever valve 90 degrees perpendicular to the pipe, or turn a round wheel valve clockwise until snug).
- Open every single hot and cold faucet in the house (from the top floor down to the lowest basement utility sink and outdoor hose bibs) so gravity drains the standing water out of the vertical pipe risers.
- Flush every toilet once to empty the tank, and pour a splash of non-toxic RV / marine propylene glycol antifreeze (or windshield washer fluid / concentrated salt water in an emergency; never automotive radiator ethylene glycol if pets could drink it) into the toilet bowl trap and sink P-traps so the curved water traps do not crack.
- Turn off the circuit breaker or gas pilot valve to your hot water heater if you drain the hot water tank, so the heating element does not burn out dry when grid power suddenly comes back on.
Safe recovery after the ice storm: Avoiding the "Widowmaker" thaw and chainsaw injuries¶
Once temperatures finally climb above \(0^\circ\text{C}\) (\(32^\circ\text{F}\)) after an ice storm, a dangerous 12-to-24-hour window begins:
- Falling Ice Daggers and "Widowmaker" Branches During the Thaw: As sunlight warms tree bark and building roofs, sheets of glaze ice Weighing 10 to 50 kilograms (22 to 110 pounds) and meter-long icicles suddenly detach and plummet from 10 to 20 meters (30 to 65 feet) overhead like guillotines. At the same time, cracked tree limbs that were only held up by frozen ice bridges suddenly snap free as the ice melts. Wear a hard hat if you must walk outdoors, never walk under roof eaves or damaged tree canopies, and never let children play under ice-coated trees.
- Spring-Loaded "Springpoles" When Clearing Fallen Trees: Never use a chainsaw to cut a fallen tree trunk or limb that is bent under tension beneath another heavy tree (a springpole) or tangled anywhere near a utility wire. When cut, a bent frozen limb snaps back with thousands of Newtons of force, shattering jaws, chests, and necks. Leave all tree work near utility lines to trained utility arborists, and see our storm cleanup and recovery guide for safe chainsaw protocols.
Tez-tez verilən suallar¶
Why is 13 millimeters (half an inch) of freezing rain so much more destructive than 30 centimeters (a foot) of snow?
Light, fluffy snow contains mostly trapped air (roughly 90 percent air to 10 percent water) and easily blows or slides off round power lines and flexible tree branches. In contrast, freezing rain falls as supercooled liquid water that coats all 360 degrees of every twig, pine needle, and wire in solid glaze ice weighing 900 kilograms per cubic meter (56 pounds per cubic foot); just 13 millimeters (0.5 inches) of radial ice adds up to 200 kilograms (450 pounds) to a single power line span and up to 5 metric tons of dead weight to a mature tree canopy, snapping healthy trees and utility poles in half.
If a power line falls across my car during an ice storm, am I safe inside, and how do I get out if the car catches fire?
As long as you stay inside the car and do not touch any metal framing while reaching out a window, you are safe inside the vehicle; call 911 / 112 / 999 and wait for utility crews to de-energize the line, while shouting to keep bystanders at least 10 meters (35 feet) away. Only exit if the vehicle catches fire: open the door, stand on the threshold, cross your arms over your chest, and jump out so that you NEVER touch the metal car and the ground at the same time and BOTH feet land on the ground together; then press your feet tightly together and shuffle heel-to-toe (without ever lifting a foot or taking a normal step) for at least 10 to 15 meters (35 to 50 feet) to prevent step-potential voltage from electrocuting you through the ground.
Can I push a low-hanging power line or an ice-covered tree branch touching a wire out of my driveway using a dry wooden broom handle or plastic snow shovel?
Never. Residential distribution lines carry 7,200 to 34,500 volts, and during an ice storm, every branch, wooden handle, and plastic shovel quickly becomes coated in a microscopic film of wet glaze ice and road salt grime. High-voltage distribution electricity effortlessly arcs through wet wood, plastic, and rubber boots, turning a broomstick or shovel into a lethal conductor that stops your heart instantly.
Is it safe to run a portable gasoline generator inside my attached garage if I leave the big garage door wide open?
No, never run a generator inside an attached or detached garage, carport, basement, or porch, even with the garage door wide open. Tests by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and NIST prove that wind currents eddy into an open garage and push concentrated carbon monoxide (CO) exhaust through door seals, drywall seams, and attic vents straight into the house's bedrooms, reaching lethal levels in under 30 minutes; always place portable generators at least 6 meters (20 feet) outdoors in the open air with the exhaust pointing away from all windows and doors.
Why can't an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) or 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) SUV drive safely during freezing rain?
All-Wheel Drive and 4-Wheel Drive only help a vehicle distribute engine power to the wheels when accelerating; they do zero to help a 2,000-kilogram (4,500-pound) vehicle steer around a curve or stop when you press the brakes. Because freezing rain forms wet glaze ice at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) where a thin film of liquid water sits on top of smooth ice, rubber tires have almost zero friction, and once a vehicle starts sliding down the slight drainage slope (crown) of a highway, all four wheels lock or spin helplessly into the ditch.
Should I go outside during or right after an ice storm to knock the ice off my trees and power lines with a pole?
No. Trying to beat or shake glaze ice off tree branches or overhead wires is both futile and deadly: frozen glaze bonds tightly to bark, and hitting an overloaded branch under extreme tension frequently causes the entire limb above your head to snap and crush you, or causes an iced-over wire to snap and electrocute you. Stay completely out from under ice-coated trees and let the sun and wind melt the ice naturally.
