You have studied, slept and packed your bag, and then something goes wrong. Your ID is missing, you wake up with a fever, the bus does not come, or your internet drops in the middle of an online exam. Almost every exam body has seen these problems before and has a process for them. Your job is to stay calm, act quickly, tell the right people and keep a record.
This guide is for students and parents sitting standardized exams, national and regional exams, entrance tests and online proctored exams. It explains what to do for the most common emergencies, how to contact the exam board or test provider, how special consideration and rescheduling work, and how to look after yourself if the day goes badly. Rules differ by country and exam, so always follow the current instructions from your own exam body.
Yenza lokhu manje¶
- Stay calm and do not give up on the exam. Many problems can be fixed or recorded, and panic wastes the time you have. Take three slow breaths with a long exhale.
- Contact the exam centre or test provider straight away. Use the phone number or help line on your admission ticket, school website or exam body page. Tell them who you are, your candidate number, the exam and what has happened.
- If you are unwell, decide if you need medical care first. For severe symptoms, call your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom). The izinombolo eziphuthumayo page lists other countries.
- Keep evidence. Take screenshots, photos, receipts and notes with times. Ask for a doctor's note or letter if you are ill.
- Ask what your options are. These may include sitting late, a different room, rescheduling, a make up exam, or special consideration after the exam.
- Tell your school or an adult you trust. They can contact the exam body for you and support you.
Before the day: reduce the risk¶
Most exam day emergencies can be reduced by planning. The guide on ngobusuku bangaphambi kovivinyo olukhulu gives a full evening plan, and the list below covers the main points for logistics.
- Check the exact date, start time, reporting time and location on your admission ticket.
- Read the ID rules. Many exams accept only certain photo IDs, and the name must match your registration.
- Pack the night before and put ID in a place you will not forget, such as inside your shoe by the door or on top of your bag.
- Plan the route, and a backup route. Add at least 30 minutes of buffer.
- Save the exam centre and exam body contact numbers on your phone, and write them on paper.
- Charge devices and have a backup power plan for online exams.
- Tell a parent or friend your schedule so someone can help if something goes wrong.
- If you have a health condition, discuss a plan with your school in advance. See the guide on hlola izindawo zokuhlala nokuthola ukwesekwa.
Lost, forgotten or invalid ID¶
Most high stakes exams require photo identification to prove you are the registered candidate. Without it you may be refused entry or required to complete extra steps.
Okufanele ukwenze¶
- Search quickly but calmly. Check your bag, pockets, car and the place you last saw it. Ask a family member to check at home.
- Contact the test centre or exam body at once. Explain the problem. Ask what alternative ID or verification is accepted.

If you are refused entry and cannot resolve it, ask clearly about your options: a later session, a replacement exam date, or a request for special consideration. Ask for the decision in writing. Contact your school as soon as possible. Do not argue with the staff on the day, because they usually follow strict rules. Calmly ask what the process is for an appeal or rescheduling.
Ukugula ngosuku¶
Feeling unwell before an exam is common. The question is whether you can safely sit the paper, and what support is available.
Decide if you need urgent care¶
Seek urgent medical help and do not sit the exam if you have:
- Chest pain, trouble breathing or fainting.
- A high fever with a stiff neck, rash, confusion or severe headache.
- Ukuhlanza okunzima noma okuqhubekayo, isifo sohudo noma ubuhlungu besisu.

If you are ill but not in danger¶
Think about three options and talk to a parent and the school before deciding.
- Sit the exam anyway and apply for special consideration afterwards. This may suit mild illness, like a cold. Record the illness and get evidence from a doctor or pharmacist if possible.
- Sit the exam and ask for adjustments on the day. You may be able to have water, tissues, rest breaks or a quieter room.
- Do not sit the exam and ask for a deferral or make up exam. This may be best for serious illness, contagious illness, or if you cannot concentrate. Many exam bodies require medical evidence.

- If you cannot see a doctor, keep records such as prescriptions, receipts or hospital paperwork.
- Ask a parent or adult to write down what happened and when.
- Ask your school what evidence the exam body needs, and by when.
Missed or delayed transport¶
A late bus, a car breakdown or a road closure can threaten a start time. Move fast and communicate.
Okufanele ukwenze¶
- Call the exam centre immediately. Tell them you are on your way and your estimated arrival time. Give your name and candidate number.
- Find a faster way. Ask a parent, friend or taxi service. Consider whether cycling or a ride share is faster.
- If your car breaks down, get safe first. Move to a safe place away from traffic. See the guide on ukuphuka kwemoto if you are stuck on a road. Safety comes before the exam.
- Keep contact open. Keep your phone charged and answer calls from the centre.
- Record proof. Keep tickets, screenshots of delays, a note from the transport company, or a tow receipt.
- Ask what is possible when you arrive. Many centres allow late arrival within a limited time. Rules vary, and some exams do not allow entry after the start. Ask for the rule.
Late arrival rules¶
Late arrival policies differ by exam. Some allow entry up to a set time after the start and no extra time to make up for lateness. Others close the door when the paper begins. If you arrive after the cut off, ask about a make up date. If transport problems were outside your control, such as severe weather, a strike or a major crash, you may be able to apply for special consideration. Keep evidence.
Severe weather and emergencies¶
If a storm, flood, fire or other emergency makes travel unsafe, do not risk your life for an exam. Contact the exam body and your school. Exams are often rescheduled for widespread emergencies. See the guide on going to school in severe weather and blizzards.
Power or internet failure in an online exam¶
Online and remote proctored exams depend on devices and connections. Technical failures are one of the most stressful problems, but many exam providers have clear steps.
Before the exam¶
- Run the system check offered by the exam provider, ideally a few days before.
- Update your device and close other programs.

- Try to reconnect. Check your router and cable, or switch to a hotspot if the rules allow it.
- Contact technical support or the proctor. Use the chat, phone or email listed in the exam instructions. Say what happened and when.
- Take screenshots and notes with timestamps. Record error messages, the time of the outage and the time you reconnected.

Computer based tests at a test centre¶
If you take a test at a centre, technical problems like frozen screens or power cuts can happen. Raise your hand and tell the staff. They can pause or restart your test, and may add time for lost minutes. Ask them to record the problem. Keep notes about what you saw and when. If you are not satisfied, contact the test provider after the exam and cite the incident record.

Try more than one channel: phone, email, website form, and your school. If it is outside office hours, leave a message and follow up first thing. Ask a parent or adult to help. In the meantime, keep notes of your attempts to contact them.
Special consideration and other support¶
Special consideration is a process, used in many systems, that allows exam bodies to adjust a result when a candidate has been affected by temporary events at or near the time of the exam, such as illness, bereavement, an accident, or a serious disruption. It is not a way to change a poor performance caused by lack of study. Rules differ by country and exam body.
What may qualify¶
- Acute illness or injury on or around the day.
- Serious family problems, such as a death or hospital admission.
- Domestic emergencies, such as fire or flood.
- Disruption at the centre, such as a fire alarm, noise or technical failure.
- Transport disruption outside your control.
How it works¶
- The school or exam centre usually submits the application, so tell them quickly.
- Evidence is usually required, such as a medical letter, death notice or incident record.
- There are deadlines, which may be days or weeks after the exam.
- The outcome may be a small adjustment to marks, usually based on how much you were affected, or approval to resit. In some systems, adjustment may be limited if you did not sit enough of the exam.
- Special consideration is different from access arrangements, which are planned in advance for long term needs. See the guide on hlola izindawo zokuhlala nokuthola ukwesekwa.
E-United States¶
For standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT, test providers offer ways to reschedule or switch test dates, sometimes with fees or fee waivers in certain situations, and have procedures for testing irregularities such as technical issues or disruptions at the centre. Details change, so check the current policy pages of the College Board and ACT. For state tests and school exams, the school or district decides on make up dates.
E-United Kingdom¶
For general qualifications, the Joint Council for Qualifications publishes rules for special consideration, and the school or college makes the application with evidence. Exam boards can also provide guidance on emergencies and late arrivals.
Elsewhere¶
National exam authorities in many countries have comparable processes. In Ireland, the State Examinations Commission handles issues for the Certificate examinations. Ask your school or education ministry for the process in your country.
