If a microscopic particle of nickel sulfide impurity trapped inside the glass expands over time, or if a tiny unnoticed edge nick combines with chassis twisting over a bump and thermal shock (hot sun on tinted dark glass outside vs. cold air conditioning inside), the internal tension layer fractures all at once at 1,500 meters per second. This instantaneous stress release shatters the entire pane into small cubes and produces a loud acoustic shockwave inside the cabin that sounds just like a gunshot.

Why should I never turn on the windshield defroster fan right after a rock hits my front windshield?¶

Your front windshield is made of laminated safety glass (two layers of glass bonded to a tough middle plastic film). When a heavy rock strikes the outside of the windshield at highway speed, the shockwave travels through the glass and flakes thousands of microscopic, needle-sharp glass splinters (called inner spall) off the inside glass surface directly onto the dashboard and down into the upward-facing defroster air vents. Turning on the defroster blower fan immediately blasts that invisible cloud of glass needles straight up into the driver's and passengers' eyes.

How do I tape plastic over a broken car window without duct tape ruining my car's paint?¶

Never stick standard duct tape or Gorilla tape directly onto painted car metal, because sunlight bakes the rubber adhesive into the automotive clearcoat and peels the paint or leaves permanent glue residue. Instead, wipe the metal door frame clean and dry, apply a continuous border of 5-centimeter (2-inch) blue painter's masking tape directly onto the painted metal around the window frame, and then tape your heavy clear plastic sheeting and high-strength duct tape directly on top of the blue painter's tape border. Open the door while wrapping the plastic so closing the door pinches the edges inside the weatherstripping.

Is it safe to drive my car if the front laminated windshield is cracked?¶

It depends on the location and depth of the damage. Because the front windshield is made of two glass layers bonded to a tough polyvinyl butyral (PVB) plastic core, it is safe to drive cautiously to a repair shop if only the outer glass layer is cracked, the middle plastic film is not punctured, you cannot feel jagged glass on the inside cabin surface, and the crack does not obscure the driver's primary line of sight. However, if the windshield is covered in an opaque white spiderweb blocking your view of the road, or if the inner glass layer is flaking splinters into the cabin, do not drive the vehicle and never try to punch the laminated glass out.
