This guide explains the two main cold fuel problems, how to tell them apart from a dead battery or other faults, safe ways to warm and recover the car, and the dangerous shortcuts that people try. It is not a repair manual. Fuel is flammable, and the safest recovery is often to warm the vehicle in a heated space or ask for a tow. For the gelling basics specific to diesel and DEF fluid, see also желирање дизел горива и зимско ДЕФ замрзавање, which this guide builds on with a wider view of fuel troubles in the cold.
- Stop cranking if the engine will not catch after about ten seconds. Repeated cranking drains the battery and can flood a petrol (gasoline) engine or damage a diesel fuel pump.
- Move to a safe place and turn on hazard lights if you are on a road. If you are in a live lane and the car will not move, call for help using your local emergency number (911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, 999 in the United Kingdom) if you feel unsafe.
- Check for fuel smells or leaks. If you smell fuel strongly, see liquid under the car, or notice smoke, get everyone out and well away, and do not try to start the engine again.
- Do not use an open flame, a blowtorch, a hair dryer on the fuel system, or a heat gun. Do not pour hot water on fuel parts. These shortcuts cause fires and damage.
- Warm the vehicle if you can, by moving it into a heated garage or bringing it to a shop with a tow. Cold fuel recovers when warmed, often within a few hours of being in a space above freezing.
- Call roadside assistance if the car is in the cold and cannot be warmed, and stay warm inside with the tailpipe clear. See насукан у аутомобилу у зимској олуји if the wait will be long.
Which problem do you have¶
Fuel type | Cause | Typical symptom | First safe step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frozen fuel line or filter | Petrol (gasoline), also diesel | Water in the fuel freezes and blocks a line, filter, or pump inlet | Engine cranks but will not start, or runs rough then stalls | Warm the vehicle in a heated space |
| Gelled diesel | Diesel | Wax crystals form in cold diesel and clog the filter | Starts then loses power and dies, or will not start in the cold | Warm the vehicle and replace the filter if needed |
| Frozen DEF (AdBlue) | Diesel with DEF | DEF freezes at about minus 11 degrees Celsius (12 degrees Fahrenheit) | Warning light or speed limit after a thaw, not a no start | Wait for the system heater, keep the tank topped up |
| Cold start trouble unrelated to fuel | Any | Dead battery, thick oil, or a faulty sensor | Slow cranking, clicking, or no sound | Видите dead car battery in freezing weather |
How to tell fuel trouble from a dead battery¶
A dead battery usually shows slow, weak, or clicking cranking, dim lights, and a dark dash. A fuel problem usually shows strong, normal cranking with no firing. If the engine turns over briskly and does not catch, think fuel or spark.
If it turns over slowly or clicks, think battery. If it starts, then dies after a few seconds or minutes, think of a blocked filter or a fuel line partly frozen. Ice that melts a little when the engine runs may reblock as the engine warms and cools.
Frozen fuel lines and water in the fuel¶
Fuel tanks breathe. As the temperature changes, moist air enters and water vapor condenses on the walls of a part empty tank. Water also arrives with contaminated fuel, from a station with poor tank maintenance, or from rain and snow melt entering through a bad cap or filler door.
Water is heavier than fuel and sinks to the bottom, near the pickup. Below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) it freezes into crystals that can plug a filter, a fuel line, or an injector.
Where it happens¶
- The fuel pickup or sock inside the tank.
- Metal fuel lines that run under the car, especially those exposed to wind.
- The fuel filter, often the first narrow place that ice catches.
- The fuel rail and injectors on some engines.
- The filler neck and cap, which may freeze shut. See car door frozen shut and fuel door latch iced shut.
Why a fuller tank helps¶
A tank that is nearly full has less empty space, so less air and less room for condensation. Keeping the tank at least half full in winter is the oldest and cheapest protection, and it also leaves you with fuel to run the heater if you get stuck. Fill up before storms, long trips, and nights forecast to be very cold, and avoid running the tank near empty.
Fuel dryers and line antifreeze¶
Fuel system water removers, often sold as "fuel line antifreeze" or "gas dryers", contain alcohol that mixes with water and carries it through the fuel system so it burns off. Many of them are based on isopropyl alcohol. They are for petrol (gasoline) engines in most cases, and you add them to the tank before filling up. Always follow the label, since the right amount depends on the tank size, and a product made for gasoline can harm a diesel engine and the reverse is also true.
Important limits:
- These products help with small amounts of water. They will not melt a block of ice that already exists, and they cannot fix a bad fuel batch.
- Using too much can harm seals, plastics, and engine performance, and some are not recommended for modern direct injection engines or ethanol blends.
- Many modern fuels already contain ethanol, which can absorb a little water, so a dryer is usually needed only if you often get water in the tank or you are asked to by the maker.
- If the owner's manual says not to use additives, follow the manual.
What to do if you think a petrol line is frozen¶
- Stop cranking. Turn the key off and wait.
- Move the car into a heated garage if you can. Push it only if it is safe, on flat ground, and with help.
- Wait several hours, or until the engine bay feels above freezing.
- Try starting again, with short cranks and long rests.
- If it starts, drive to a garage and ask them to check for water in the tank and replace the fuel filter if necessary.
- If it does not start after warming, call a mechanic or a tow. Do not take lines apart in the cold.
Gelled diesel¶
Diesel fuel contains paraffin wax. When the temperature falls, the wax begins to form crystals. The point at which the fuel looks cloudy is the cloud point.
Below that, crystals can block the filter, and at a lower temperature the fuel becomes a thick gel that will not flow, called the pour point. Diesel cars, trucks, tractors, and generators are all affected.
Standard summer diesel may begin to cloud at around minus 5 to 0 degrees Celsius (23 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Winter blended diesel, sold in cold regions in the colder months, is designed to remain liquid in lower temperatures. The exact figures vary by country, season, and supplier, so treat the numbers as rough guides.
Signs of gelling¶
- The engine starts, runs for a short time, then loses power and stops, often after a few minutes.
- The engine will not start at all, even though it cranks well.
- Black or white smoke, hesitation, or a loss of power under load in cold weather.
- A fuel filter that looks clouded or full of wax when removed.
- A warning light for the fuel filter heater or water in fuel on some vehicles.
Gelled fuel is a warm up problem. The wax melts when the fuel warms.
- Stop trying to start, and do not force the engine.
- Get the vehicle into a heated building if at all possible. Even a few hours in a garage above 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) usually clears a light gel.
- If the filter is clogged with wax, it may need replacement. Have a mechanic do this, since diesel systems need to be primed and air must be removed.
Warning
What never to do¶
- Never pour petrol, alcohol, or lighter fluid into a diesel tank or filter.
- Never use a hair dryer or heat gun on a fuel system unless a qualified mechanic is working in a safe, ventilated place.
Видите carbon monoxide and smoke inhalation first aid.
- Never use starting fluid (ether spray) on a diesel engine with glow plugs or an air intake heater, because it can cause explosive damage.
- Never keep cranking after the engine fails to start. Rest the starter and the battery between attempts.
- Never open fuel lines or the filter unless you know what you are doing, because pressurized fuel can spray out.
Starting fluid¶
Aerosol starting fluid is highly flammable and can cause damage to diesel engines with glow plugs or intake heaters, and sometimes to petrol engines with sensors. Do not use it unless the owner's manual allows it, and never use it near a flame or sparks.
Safe ways to warm the car¶
Warming helps most cold fuel problems, because both ice and wax melt at moderate temperatures. The aim is slow, indirect warming, not heat applied to fuel parts.
| Method | Safe? |
|---|---|---|
| Move the car into a heated garage | Да | Best option, allow several hours |
| Park in a heated or sheltered car park | Да | Wind protection helps even if not warm |
| Engine block heater, plugged in | Да | Common in very cold regions, plug in overnight |
| Tank or fuel heater fitted by the maker | Да | Check it works before winter |
| Battery or engine blankets and insulated covers | Да | Slow, helpful before the car cools |
| Warm, not hot, air from a workshop heater, used at a distance by a professional | Mostly | Keep away from fuel, use with ventilation |
| Hot water on fuel parts | бр | Cracks parts and refreezes |
| Open flame or torch | бр | Fire and explosion hazard |
| Hair dryer on fuel lines | Risky | Static and fuel vapor; only by a professional |
Engine block heaters¶
In places with long cold winters, a block heater warms engine coolant and keeps oil and fuel from stiffening. Plug it in a few hours before starting, using a heavy duty outdoor extension cord rated for the load. Check the cord and plug for damage, and keep them out of puddles and snow.
A timer can start heating about two to four hours before you leave. Block heaters are not a substitute for treated fuel and winter diesel in very cold weather.

If you are stranded and the fuel will not flow¶
If the car will not start and you cannot warm it, treat it as a stranding. Stay inside, keep the tailpipe clear if you can run the engine, layer up, and call roadside help. If the engine will run only briefly, use those minutes for heater cycles rather than tries at driving. See насукан у аутомобилу у зимској олуји и stuck in snow for what to do while you wait.
A generator, a heated tent, or a workshop heater should only be used outside, with carbon monoxide safety in mind. Never run a petrol generator inside a garage, even with the door open.
Prevention¶
A little care before winter prevents most fuel trouble.
- Keep the tank at least half full from autumn to spring.
- Buy fuel from busy, reputable stations that turn over their stock, since water builds up in tanks that sit.
- In cold regions, buy winter diesel, which is blended for the season, and add an anti gel treatment to the tank before the cold arrives.
- Replace the fuel filter at the interval in your service book, and just before winter if it is due.
- If your car has a water in fuel warning light or a fuel filter drain, learn how it works and use it as the manual advises.
- Keep the filler cap in good condition so snow and rain do not enter.
- Use a block heater if your area calls for one, and plug it in on very cold nights.
- Park in a garage or out of the wind, and avoid leaving the car for long periods in extreme cold with a near empty tank.
- If you rarely drive the car, drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes now and then so the fuel circulates and the engine warms fully.

Other cold fuel problems¶
Frozen or stuck fuel door and cap¶
Ice can freeze the fuel door shut, and snow can pack around the filler. Tap the door gently with the heel of your hand, press and release the latch, and use a de-icer spray designed for cars. Do not pry hard with metal tools. Keep the area clean and brush it off before refueling.
Costs vary widely by country and car. A filter change is a small job, but draining and cleaning a tank, or replacing a high pressure pump damaged by water or wrong fuel, is expensive. This is another reason to stop driving when you suspect contaminated fuel, and not to carry on.
Can I pour hot water on a frozen fuel line?¶
No, you should not pour hot water on a fuel line. It can crack parts, spread fuel, and freeze again as ice in the cold air. Move the car into a warm space and let it thaw slowly, or ask a mechanic to warm it safely.
Will fuel line antifreeze fix a frozen line?¶
Not usually. Fuel line antifreeze, often an alcohol based fuel dryer, helps prevent water from freezing when it is added before the cold, but it cannot melt ice that has already blocked a line. Warm the vehicle first, then use the product as directed if the manual allows it.
How cold does it have to be for diesel to gel?¶
Summer diesel may begin to cloud near minus 5 to 0 degrees Celsius (23 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit), and standard fuel can gel solid in colder temperatures. Winter blended diesel is made for lower temperatures, and the exact limits vary by country and supplier. Using winter fuel and anti gel additives before the cold arrives is the best protection.
Is it safe to add petrol or gasoline to diesel to stop it gelling?¶
No, adding petrol (gasoline) to diesel is unsafe and can damage modern fuel injection systems. It also lowers the flash point of the fuel and increases fire risk. Use a diesel anti gel additive made for the purpose, and buy winter grade diesel if it is available.
