Broken or Water Damaged Phone Emergency Data Recovery¶
Smartphones store essential medical contacts, multi-factor authentication apps, flight tickets, and personal records. When a phone drops in water or breaks during a crisis, emergency recovery steps preserve your hardware and data.
Do this now¶
- Power off the phone immediately. If the phone dropped in water, turn it off instantly. Do not press buttons or try using the screen while wet.
- Do not plug in a charger. Connecting a wet phone to power causes short circuits that permanently destroy internal memory chips and logic boards.
- Remove case, SIM card, and memory tray. Take off protective cases, remove SIM cards and microSD cards, and pat down the exterior gently with a clean dry towel.
- Desiccate safely with air movement. Place the phone in front of a fan or gentle air current in a dry room for 24 to 48 hours.
... danger "Never use rice, hairdryers, or ovens" Rice dust and starch clog headphone jacks and ports while trapping moisture inside. Hairdryers and ovens overheat lithium batteries, creating explosion and fire hazards.
Accessing account recovery and multi-factor codes¶
If your phone screen is shattered or unreadable:
- Connect to an external display: Use a USB-C adapter to plug Android phones or newer iPhones into a computer monitor or TV to view the screen.
- Use web portals for accounts: Access email, banking, and travel portals on a laptop using SMS backup options or saved backup codes.
- Use cloud backups: Log into cloud accounts (such as iCloud or Google Account) on a secondary device to view backed up contacts, photos, and authenticators.
