Emergency numbers differ by country. This page uses 911, the number for the United States and Canada. Many other countries use 112, 999, or another number. Find the number for your country.

Danger

Where to dig

  1. Clear all the snow in front of and behind each drive wheel, making a gentle ramp that rises out of the hole. A ramp that is 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) long gives the tyre room to climb.
  4. Do not stand behind or in front of the car while someone else tries to move it. A sliding car can injure you.
  5. Take breaks. Digging in cold weather is hard work. Sweating soaks your clothes and then chills you, so slow down, vent your jacket, and drink water.

Protect your body while you dig

Wear layers that you can remove, keep your hands and feet dry, and check yourself and others for signs of frostbite.

Traction aids that work

Once the snow is clear, add something that bites. Different aids suit different situations, and having a few in your car gives you choices.

Traction aid How it helps Best for Drawbacks
Sand or grit Adds rough material under the tyre Packed snow and ice Heavy to carry, useless if buried
Non clumping cat litter Absorbs water and adds grip Light snow and ice Messy, can clog if wet
Traction boards or mats Plastic ramps with teeth Deep snow, mud, sand
Car floor mats Rubber side down under the tyre Emergency only Can be thrown out and damaged
Tyre chains or snow socks Fit around the tyre Deep snow, steep hills, legal requirements Need practice to fit, speed limits apply
Branches, cardboard, or clothing Improvised surface છેલ્લો ઉપાય Poor grip, may be thrown out
Winter tyres Better rubber and tread નિવારણ Must be fitted before you need them

Using chains and snow socks

Chains give the most grip in deep snow and on steep roads, and many mountain areas require them. Learn to fit them in your driveway in daylight before you need them in a storm. Fit them on the drive wheels, follow the maker's instructions, and drive slowly, usually under 30 to 50 kilometers per hour (20 to 30 miles per hour).

Using sand or cat litter

Pour it in a strip in front of the drive tyres, in the direction you want to go, and a short length behind them for backing up. A layer around 1 to 2 centimeters (half an inch to an inch) thick is enough. Do not pour it where the tyres have already polished the surface into ice and then drive over it fast, because it can be thrown aside. Pull away gently.

The rocking technique

Rocking uses the car's own movement to build a little momentum and climb out of the hole. It works best on a car that is not high centered and has a modest amount of snow. It is hard on the drivetrain, so do it gently and for short periods.

How to rock a car free

  1. Clear snow and exhaust first, then straighten the front wheels so they are pointing straight ahead.
  2. Turn off traction control if the owner's manual allows it for rocking, because the system may cut power just when you need it. Turn it back on once you are moving.
  3. Shift to the lowest forward gear, or in an automatic, use drive or a "snow" or "low" setting. Apply gentle throttle and let the car move forward as far as it will go.
  4. As the car stops, ease off the throttle, then shift into reverse and apply gentle throttle to roll back. Do not hit the accelerator hard, and do not let the wheels spin.
  5. As the car rolls back and starts to slow, ease off, then shift to drive again and let it roll forward. Use the swing to build a small amount of momentum. Each swing may gain a few centimeters.
  6. After a few swings, a clear track should form. As the car reaches the top of a forward swing, apply a little more throttle to carry on out of the hole.
  7. Stop after about a minute if nothing changes. Rest the transmission, and try a different method.

Warning

Rocking can overheat and damage an automatic transmission, so limit each effort to about 15 to 30 seconds with short rests. Avoid revving the engine or letting the wheels spin fast. Never rock a car when someone is standing behind or in front of it, and do not use this method if you smell burning or see warning lights. For more on transmission limits see car stuck in deep mud, sand or snowdrift.

Pull away gently

When the car begins to move, keep gentle throttle and avoid stopping. In an automatic, you can use second gear or a winter mode to reduce torque. In a manual, start in second gear and ease the clutch out slowly.

If you feel the wheels spinning, ease off instead of pressing harder. Keep going until you are on a firmer surface, then stop where it is safe and brush off the car.

When to stop and call for help

Knowing when to quit is a skill. Some situations should not be fought with a shovel.

Stop and call for help if:

  • Three or four careful attempts have not freed the car.
  • The car is high centered, in a ditch, against a guardrail, or on a slope that makes any movement risky.
  • You are on a road with traffic, poor visibility, or a drop off beside you.
  • You are cold, tired, short of breath, or have a medical condition.
  • Fuel is low, or you cannot keep the tailpipe clear.
  • It is dark, the storm is worsening, or you are alone in a remote place.
  • Children, older adults, or people with medical needs are with you.
  • You smell fuel or burning, or you see smoke.

What to tell the dispatcher

Be calm and clear. Give your location, using a road name, a mile or kilometer marker, a junction, or the coordinates on your phone. Say what the car is stuck in, how many people are inside, whether anyone is hurt or cold, how much fuel you have, and what you can see.

Ask for an estimate of how long help will take, and repeat any instructions. Keep the line open if you can and keep your phone warm.

Stuck on a hill

On a slope, backing down or sliding sideways is the greater danger. Do not try to turn around on ice. If the car is slipping backward, steer straight, apply the brake gently, and use the parking brake.

If you cannot keep the car in position, leave it as far from the road as you can and wait for help.

Stuck in a snowbank on a rural road

Rural roads can be far from traffic, with limited phone signal. Tell someone where you are and when you expect to arrive. If you have no signal, stay with the car, since a vehicle is easier to find than a person.

Read lost outdoors if you must leave the car for any reason. Do not walk away in a storm unless shelter is clearly closer than you can see, because it is easy to lose your way in blowing snow.

Stuck with an electric vehicle

Electric vehicles do not have a tailpipe, so there is no exhaust blockage risk, but the heater uses battery power and reduces range. Many EVs have winter modes. Keep the battery above about 20 percent if you may need to wait.

Check the manual for how to use traction and low speed modes. A rocking motion is possible, but use the "creep" or low speed setting and avoid wheel spin.

Stuck with a manual transmission

Use second gear and a gentle clutch to reduce torque. A smooth start with little throttle is better than high revs. Avoid slipping the clutch too long, because it overheats and wears.

After you are free

Once the car is out, do not rush off. Brush the snow from the roof, windows, lights, and number plates (license plates). Check the tyres for damage, and look underneath for snow packed against the brake lines or exhaust.

Drive slowly for the first few minutes while the brakes dry out, and test them gently. If you were stuck for a long time, have the car checked for transmission or clutch damage. See આઈસ્ડ વિન્ડશિલ્ડ, સ્થિર તાળાઓ અને વાઇપર્સ for clearing snow and ice and the legal rules for it.

How to avoid getting stuck

  • Keep your tyres in good condition, and fit winter tyres where winters are cold.
  • Carry a compact shovel, traction boards or sand, and a winter kit.
  • Avoid parking where plows will bury your car or where snow drifts.
  • Pull into a parking space in a way that lets you drive out forward.
  • Keep the fuel tank at least half full.
  • Do not drive into deep drifts, even in a four wheel drive.
  • Slow down before drifts and keep a steady, gentle speed through them.
  • Check road conditions and stay home if officials ask drivers to stay off the roads.

Preparing the vehicle before you try to move

Many recoveries fail because the driver starts the engine and tries to leave before the car is ready. A few minutes of preparation before the first attempt saves time and fuel.

  • Turn off traction control only if the manual recommends it for getting out of snow, and turn it on again once you are rolling.

જુઓ car stuck in deep mud, sand or snowdrift આ પદ્ધતિ અને તેની મર્યાદાઓ વિશે વધુ માટે.

Warning

20 to 30 centimeters (8 to 12 inches) Likely to get stuck May struggle Avoid unplowed roads, wait for a plow
Over 30 centimeters (12 inches) Stuck, high centered Likely stuck Do not drive, unless in an emergency
Drifts of any depth High risk High risk Stop before the drift, and do not try to plow through

Do not drive into a drift unless you have to. A drift can hide a ditch, a curb, or an object, and the snow is packed more densely than it looks. If the road ahead is covered, the safe decision is to turn back while you can. Momentum helps in light snow, but it can also drive you into a hidden obstacle, so keep your speed moderate and steady.

Tools worth carrying

  • Traction boards, which can be reused many times and fold flat.
  • A small bag of sand or non clumping cat litter, kept in a sealed container so it stays dry.
  • A set of tyre chains or snow socks that fit your tyres, and thick gloves.
  • A tow strap with rated hooks, and a pair of work gloves.
  • A bright vest or a reflective jacket for working beside the road.
  • A headlamp, which leaves both hands free while you dig in the dark.
  • A pair of waterproof overtrousers and spare gloves, since wet clothes cool you quickly.

Is it better to spin the wheels or go slowly when stuck in snow?

Go slowly. Spinning the wheels melts the snow under the tyres, polishes it into ice, and digs a deeper hole. Use gentle throttle, a higher gear in a manual or a winter mode in an automatic, and add traction under the drive wheels. If the car does not move after a few gentle tries, dig and add traction rather than pressing harder.

Can I use hot water to free a stuck car?

No, hot water can refreeze into ice under the wheels, make the surface more slippery, and crack cold glass or damage paint. Dig out the snow by hand or with a shovel and add sand, grit, or cat litter instead. Save any hot water for drinking if you are waiting for help.

How long can I run the engine while stuck in snow?

Run the engine for short periods, such as about ten minutes each hour, only after you have checked that the tailpipe is completely clear. Crack a window slightly and check the exhaust again after each time you restart. If you cannot keep the tailpipe clear, do not run the engine, and use clothing and blankets for warmth instead.

Should I leave the car and walk for help?

In most cases, stay with the car. A vehicle gives you shelter and is far easier for rescuers to spot than a person on foot, and it is easy to become lost or exposed in a storm. Walk only if you can clearly see a safe building nearby and the weather allows it, and tell someone your plan if you can.
